No More Elders Quorum!

Charles: A very happy man!
After 10 years in the Elders Quorum -- serving in every calling in the Quorum -- finally, finally . . . Charles is with the Young Men! He was called to serve as the Young Men's President in our ward. He is SO excited! (Don't get me wrong, he loved the EQ -- but he was ready for some change!)

Charles joined the church when he was 17, so he did not get to experience the full scope of the YM program. There is a a new Duty to God program now, so learning the program and helping the young men will be an awesome opportunity for him!

Look how cute he is. :-)
He is most looking forward to having "Man-time". Meaning: camping, hiking, outdoors, getting dirty, etc., etc. He has put those things on the back-burner for a LONG time while making it through school, and now he HAS to do it!

He recently went on a 30+ mile hike with the young men and he was SO happy! He gave it his all on the trip . . . including his fingernail, which fell off, just yesterday. (Totally gross!) I was going to take a picture of it . . . maybe next time!
I am so excited because Charles is responsible for the Priest Quorum and I have the Laurels . . . we have within our grasp the YM/YW who will be sent out into the world, and we get to be a part of their lives (and hopefully learning) before they go! I am SO excited and Charles is thrilled. There are many fun times to come . . . !!!!

Youth Fireside

Question: How many people can I squish inside my cozy 2 bedroom home . . . ?

The Answer: 25-30 good-looking LDS youth (and leaders, too!)

I was responsible for putting on the Sunday night fireside for the Youth. It was a lot of FUN! I had a particularly exciting topic: A Return to Virtue. It was all about chastity and purity, a very thrilling topic to discuss with our latter-day youth! I LOVE the youth in our ward. They are so wonderful. Amazing, they are. Just amazing!
We had a very blunt and straightforward discussion about purity and then I showed a video (Mormon Message) by Sis. Dalton: Return to Virtue. One of my young women told me, "You made a very uncomfortable topic, comfortable." That made me very happy. :-) That was my goal! Look at all those cute faces!
Gathering in the kitchen for cookies (my camera REALLY stinks inside, in the dark?)
I was SO grateful for the AC unit that my friend, Erin, let me borrow. We did not roast alive in the 100 degree heat!

It was a lovely evening. The future is in good hands. Our young people are good and powerful. I am so grateful to be a part of their lives!

Boys and Bugs

It is the time of year when bugs are just a part of life . . . and boys will surely find them!

Daniel and William are playing Peter Pan vs. Jack Sparrow. (Notice Daniel FINALLY lost his front tooth, it was hanging by a thread for a month!)
This is William's pet "Fuzz Ball". I thought it was a pretty creepy looking caterpillar . . . it eventually turns into a moth. Ick.
Daniel found this spider one morning . . . a very smart spider. It built a web right where all the flies swarm in the morning. She was having herself a little feast! (Smart spiders are girl spiders -- like Charlotte.) Because it was such a smart spider, I let her live.
August is not my favorite time of the year because that is when all of the creepy-crawlies start coming out of the cracks. Icky. I do love the late Fall when they all go into hiding again!

Art, Music, and Creating

Sammi pulled out her color-set the other day and I joined her for a little drawing . . . it was fun to mess around and awesome to see Sammi's imagination at work! I love to mess around with drawing now and again. One day I want to take an art class (I never have and I know I would love it!) Sammi seems to enjoy it, too!

I went to Starlight Theater with the Relief Society sisters to see Thoroughly Modern Millie. It was a really fun night. The production was pretty darn good, and the acting/singing was entertaining. I love sitting outside under the stars. I had been there before with my family (we saw Seven Brides for Seven Brothers -- my FAVORITE!) If you ever have the chance to go, you should . . . it is worth it! :-)
Some of our relief society women . . .
I rode up with Rachelle and we had a great time chatting and snarking cookies.
We were supposed to sit with the rest of our "groupies" but we got separated by tickets -- it was still nice to look at the back of their heads. ;-)
Mary Jo posing for the camera . . . what you can't see is she is holding back tears . . . wishing Erin was there.
Maybe next year Erin will grace us with her presence . . . we can hope! ;-)
Charles was in the kitchen getting ready for a 30 mile backpacking trip with the boy scouts. He was creating some pretty interesting meals (recipes from the handbook.) I should have taken more pictures of him when he got home . . . he had so much fun hiking through the Sawtooth mountains. It was a great trip for all the boys, though many were blistered, sunburned, and one boy lost the bottom of his shoe on the first day! Thank goodness for duct tape! Charles was sunburned, had one blister and he smashed his fingernail into a rock, but besides that he was totally thrilled, happy, and a new man!
While Charles was gone I decided to get down to business . . . It was the perfect opportunity for me to do the "room switch". We traded rooms with the kids, and I converted our walk-in closet into a room for Sammi . . . I ripped out all the hardware, filled the holes with putty, used the power-drill/saw to remove the bottom shelves and then painted walls/shelves until 3am in the morning. I turned her room into a little magical paradise, with a touch of (pictures of) Hobbiton and Hogwarts -- she LOVES it, and so do I! It just got to the point where something had to be done, she needed her own space away from the boys. . . it was the prefect solution! And I spent a total of $0.00. using only things that we already had, including paint (with the exception of ink from the printer, for the wall pictures.) Sammi is a happy girl, and she helped me the whole time, she painted and did whatever I needed. It was a fun thing to create together . . . when I was done I became the "best mom ever". ;-) Amazing what a little paint will do!

I felt so alive being able to create something and once again discover the diamond in the rough . . . !!

Go create something, anything! Even cookies! (and feel free to share them with me!) It will give you JOY!

The 4th in Zion

This year, we decided at the last minute, to go spend our 4th in Utah. I am so glad we did! We had a great time with my little brother's family: John, Mindy, Ben and Scooter. We went up to a hill right under the Provo temple where we could watch the amazing Stadium of Fire, shot off from BYU. It was AWESOME! My camera ran out of batteries at just the wrong time! Anyhow, we stayed up on the hill from about 6pm-12am. The kids were in HEAVEN running and playing and enjoying the yummy food. Someone made these amazing cookies, which I kept sending Sammi back for. They were perfect chocolate chip cookies, with carmel in the middle -- super! Anyhow, it was a great time had by all! It may be a new tradition! We also went to see my Nan on Sunday up in Heber. It is always so good to see her. I am so glad we live close enough to visit family!

I was trying to convince Mindy to let me have Scooter. For some reason, she would not go for it. He is one of those babies that you just want to snuggle and smooch. I would grab him whenever I could. Scooty, who's your favorite Aunt?? ;-)
Scooter was showing off his snot-bubble-blowing ability. :-)
Just hanging out together as family . . .

It was so pretty watching the sun go down outside by the temple, the mountains, and everything. It was such a pretty night.
I love family. Nothing better. We had a super time! Thanks John and Mindy!
