"In youth we learn; in age we understand."

Our lovely granddaughter Kasey...

now starting her first year in Middle School!!!

(Anybody know why "they" switched from calling it Junior High to Middle School?)

  1. Lovely shot. In my day they didn't have graduation from elementary school to junior high. So I can see not only have names changed but so have traditions. Time moves on :).

  2. They didn't have graduation from elementary school to jr high in "my day" either LOL!!! Times do change!!! Her ceremony had the requisite 3 student speakers, a bit of entertainment, and each student being called by name to walk across the stage and their certificate!!! But no cap and gowns...thank the powers that be!!!

  3. Congratulations to her and love the b&w! I guess I'm part of that past chapter too, never had a graduation from elementary to intermediate school (that's what they called it in my day:)

  5. Congratulations to your granddaughter. I must be a real fossil. We never had middle school or Jr. High. Only elementary where we went from 8th grade to high school. We did, however, have an 8th grade graduation.

  6. Lovely photo - love that she's 'looking forward' and the way you captured her profile with all the balloons! I was in the first class that went to "middle school" in my district...Graduated highschool in 1978...so that would mean we started 6th grade in the new "Middle School" in Sept of '71. I can't remember anything about why 'they' did it - just everyone being scared we were all too young to leave elementary school! I want to know when "they" started having graduation ceremonies for pre-schoolers...and everyone else along the way!

  7. Love ths in BW, and congrats to your grand daughter. I've often wondered the same thing about the name change. Someone probably thought it was politically incorrect :)

  9. Congrats to Kasey (pretty name too!). I bet some shrink decided that 'Junior' was damaging to self esteem, and 'Middle' was better. My youngest starts 10th grade in a few weeks and will be driving in Feb :-O

  10. I remember they started having graduation ceremonies for the young uns in the 70's...but I didn't notice the change from Jr High to Middle School until some time in the 90's...We had a promotion ceremony from 9th grade to high school...but not elementary school!!! I think Wayne's right...someone must have decided that junior was damaging to the psyche!!!

Bayside...there was a school district right next to ours when I was a kid that went from k-8 then started high school...it was unusual, but I think was often done in the smaller districts.

I think going from elementary to junior high or middle school is probably one of the scariest and most exciting transitions for kids...it's really going from being a "little kid" to a "big kid"!

Our eldest granddaughter is turning 16 next month...another big transition!!! And our baby granddaughter recently transitioned from infant day care to toddler day care!!! Life sure does march on!!!

Thanks everyone for visiting and commenting!!!

  11. Good Luck to Kasey. The middle years can be a challenge, even for the fully prepared.
