Sports wear manufacturer, Nike Malaysia today launched 'The Chance' programme aimed at scouting for new talents to become promising footballers in the future.

Joan Yeoh, Country Marketing Manager of Nike Malaysia, said the programme was expected to be much more exciting this year as more young footballers were eager to try their luck to become promising players in the future.

"We expect a total of 6,000 youngsters aged 16-24 will turn up to showcase their football skill in front of the panel of judges appointed by us," she told reporters after the launching of the programme by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) Secretary-General Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad at Wisma FAM here, Tuesday.

Malaysia urged to focus on basics to produce more quality players

Cardiff City Academy manager Neal Ardley believes Malaysian football needs to focus on the basics to produce more quality players.

Ardley, who during his playing days was part of Wimbledon’s “Crazy Gang”, said giving young players the chance to play was the most important aspect of football development and should only later be followed by other more serious aspects of training.

“At Cardiff, we have 127 kids in our elite academy programme but that did not just happen overnight and took us five years to achieve with the help of the underpinnings of our youth programme," said Ardley, at the academy grounds in Pontypridd.

“The most important thing is to give children the chance to play and be introduced to the game by giving them the chance to spend regular hours playing the sport.

“At the academy,  we have over 50,000 players going through our programmes each year with pretty much every school in south and mid Wales being covered by our coaches and scouts. It  is only with a large pool like this that we are able to produce the best players.”

Ardley, who last year spent 11 days conducting coaching clinics for players and coaches throughout Malaysia, said educating Malaysian coaches is the next most important aspect to improving the development of football.

“Being a good coach is a very difficult skill to achieve and is an ongoing process with coaches needing to be trained and educated on a continual basis.

"When I was in Malaysia, I noticed that the youth coaches there were  very passionate about the game  but they lacked proper techniques in teaching the various age groups.”

Ardley went on to praise Cardiff's Malaysian chairman and co-owner Datuk Chan Tien Ghee for his efforts in organising the 1Malaysia Cardiff City (1MCC) Under-12 League which will see more than 32 teams from across the Klang Valley, Perak and Penang compete. Chan, together with Tan Sri Vincent Tan, took over Cardiff in May 2010.

Selected  promising players from the league will be given the chance to train at the Cardiff Academy.

“TG (Tian Ghee) is very development oriented, whether it is for the academy here or in Malaysia and the 1MCC league is a really positive platform to help give players the chance to play.

“Due to red tape, it may be hard to have players from Malaysia to play for the club but we will  definitely be looking at having Malaysian players and coaches come and train with us,” added the former Wimbledon midfielder.

Sports Ministry planning to build stadiums specifically for football

The Ministry of Youth and Sports plans to build stadiums specifically for football.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said such stadiums would only be used for football and not for any other purpose.

Ahmad Shabery said his ministry was in the process of studying options whether to build new stadiums or refurbish existing ones.

"The plan is still in the proposal stage. We feel such a plan is necessary because what we have now are used for various activities, including athletics meets.

 "We need to break away from tradition to develop football. To do that we need to maintain the stadiums and pitch. Trainings need to conducted elsewhere and stadiums reserved for matches," he told reporters at the KAWAT-Exxon Mobil 2011 Media Awards here.

He said the ministry was in the final stage of identifying locations for building such stadiums using artificial turf recognised by FIFA.

"We have a choice of building stadiums with artificial turf and we have short listed various types of turf suitable for use and meet the FIFA specification.

"To build pitches with artificial turf is slightly expensive must cheaper in the long run when maintenance of natural fields are taken into account," he said.

FAM wants Malaysian players try their luck overseas

The FA of Malaysia (FAM) believes its young players have the talent and skills to play abroad.

FAM vice-president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said the focus  must be on youth to ensure Malaysian football  progresses.

"We are the regional champions but it does not make us  the best in Asia. We must look beyond Southeast Asia and  in order to do that, we need quality players," said Subahan at the launch of the 1Malaysia Cardiff City Junior Football League logo at  Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Club yesterday.

"I feel our players have the talent, for instance Khairul Fahmi Che Mat and Fadhli Shas were both voted among the best under-23 players in Asia last year. So  they should try their luck abroad. Our 17-and-18-year-olds are also talented and we must start grooming them.

"We had Safee Sali in Cardiff for trials but let us be realistic, he has just another few more years in professional football at 27.

"We should look at others and in order for our long held  dream to qualify for  the World Cup or Olympics to materialise, it will depend on how we manage our players. I am confident that one of our players will play in the top-tier division in England."

Subahan stressed that it is  about time  the younger players in the national team play abroad.

"Safee has improved so much by playing for Pelita Jaya in Indonesia and other players should follow suit. I am not saying they should only go to Cardiff. They can also try their luck at other foreign clubs," Subahan added.

"Of course, it is for FAM and national coach K. Rajagobal to decide on the next course for these players."

He also stressed that private entities should invest in  the local game to improve its quality.

"We need support from everyone, including the private sector to get involved in grassroots development," said Subahan.

Cardiff City chairman Datuk Chan Tien Ghee said the club would continue to give opportunities to local players and coaches.

"Safee and Safiq Rahim were at Cardiff for trials and both  were exposed to different kinds of training. As for the near future, we will continue to give opportunities to players and coaches as the club are  a part of Malaysia," said Tien Ghee.

According to sources, Cardiff are keen on Young Tigers A midfielder Nazmi Faiz, who they want on a one-year attachment deal.  Discussions are underway between the concerned parties.

The club also offered national Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee a  stint but the former international needs to prepare his team for several priority assignments.

Among the attendees of yesterday's logo launch were Cardiff manager Malky Mackay, CEO Alan Whitely, FAM general secretary Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad and Rajagobal.

FAM spends RM6.5m for youth football development

Up to RM6.5 million from the national football development fund has been disbursed to the FA of Malaysia (FAM) for grassroots development activities this year.

Deputy Sports Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim said the expenditure, comprising 65 per cent of the fund's RM10 million allocation, includes the salaries of 112 coaches, equipment and costs of organising junior tournaments.

"When talking about developing football at the grassroots level, RM10 million is nothing compared to South Korea which spends about RM300 million annually.

"We have been allocated an additional RM10 million for 2012 under the new budget but there are no assurances we will continue receiving this amount in the future.

"And of this amount, 65 per cent has gone to FAM for various initiatives, including the training and payment of coaches, equipment and other costs," said Razali after chairing a football development committee meeting in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

The committee, with representatives from the Sports and Education ministries, the National Sports Council, FAM and other stakeholders, has been tasked with ensuring Malaysia's qualification for the 2019 World Youth Cup with some 1,600 children under the age of 12 training at 14 state centres under 112 coaches with former national goalkeeper Lim Kim Choon supervising the programme.

These players represent the first batch of talent to be groomed for the 2019 target with a new batch to be identified next year as the committee looks to develop talent at every age group.

Razali said the first test of these budding players will be a "MyKids" tournament in Tronoh, Perak on Nov 21-30 involving all 14 training centres.

"The top four teams from this tournament will advance to the Champions of Champions tournament in December where all the winners of the various junior tournaments organised in the country will compete in a single event to determine the best of the best," he said.

The Champions of Champions will, among others, include the winners of the Sultan Ahmad Shah Cup and Danone Nations Cup Malaysia.

FAM happy with government's allocation for artificial football pitches

The Football Association of Malaysia has praised the RM50 million allocation in the 2012 Budget to build artificial football pitches throughout the country.

Its deputy president, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said the construction of more pitches would encourage more youths to take up football as the sport be played on better grounds.

Describing the budget as people-friendly, he hoped more football fields would be built throughout the country.

Tengku Abdullah, who is also Malaysian Hockey Federation president, was speaking to reporters after presenting cash prizes to 18 players from the national hockey squad which finished third in the Asian Challenge Trophy Championship in Ordos, China recently.

Each player was rewarded RM5,000. Malaysia beat China 1-0 for the third place.

The 2012 Budget has proposed an allocation of RM50 million to build artificial pitches with floodlights in 30 selected locations nationwide and an additional RM15 million for 150 more futsal courts throughout the country.

FIFA and FAM conducting goalkeeping seminar

The World Football Federation (FIFA) in association with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) are conducting a four–day international seminar, which started yesterday, to improve the quality of goalkeeping for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

FIFA course instructor Pat Bonner said the seminar would utilise the 2010 World Cup in South Africa as the case study to analyse current goalkeeping trends and the latest technical and tactical approaches towards improving the skill level of goalkeeping instructors.

“The participants will be exposed to what goalkeepers, coaches and instructors do,” the Irishman said yesterday.

The former Celtic goalkeeper Bonner was part of the famous Republic of Ireland team which played in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

 In good company: Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy played for the Republic of Ireland alongside Pat Bonner at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. The team consisted of players like Paul McGrath, Niall Quinn, John Aldridge and Mick McCarthy and Bonner is best remembered for his famous penalty save from Daniel Timofte of Romania at the 1990 World Cup in Italy during the knockout stage.

At present, the 41–year–old Bonner is also the coach at Ireland’s National Coaching and Training Centre for Goalkeepers.

He said that the seminar was a starting point for the participants to enhance their skills, attitudes and characteristic as instructors when they return to their own countries.

Thirty participants from 21 countries including Australia, China, France, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and England are attending the seminar.

Apart from the seminar, the participants will also be putting their knowledge to use on artificial turf at Bukit Jalil to train Under-12 goalkeepers from clubs in Klang Valley.

They would also be analysing the Malaysia Cup match between Selangor and Kuala Lumpur at Shah Alam Stadium tonight.

Sports Ministers warns players about match fixing

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek has reminded all quarters including football players involved in the Malaysia Cup campaign which begins on Sept to uphold integrity.

He said they must not be involved in selling away matches or get trapped in the bookie menace in order to protect the image of Malaysian football.

“We have seen now the revival of Malaysian football and the spirited support it is receiving from local football fans and the public.  “Hence, we should not bring disrepute to the game by cooperating with gambling syndicates or bookies who are into fixing matches as this will adversely affect the support and trust of fans and also the nation’s football reputation.”

Ahmad Shabery told this at a presentation of Ramadan contributions and breaking of fast with residents of Kemasik at the Kemasik Jamek Mosque, here, last night.

He said his ministry would be monitoring the situation and would not hesitate to take action including lodging police reports if there were any football team or player involved in the immoral activity of match fixing.

Ahmad Shabery, who is also the member of parliament for Kemaman, also urged players and coaches to immediately lodge a police report if they are approached by such syndicates.

“Don’t gamble away the future of our nation’s football just for money and personal interest. We need to keep up the Malaysian football momentum for it to  reach a higher level,” he said.

Negeri Sembilan’s President Cup team coach Yusarman Yusof was reported to be charged in the Seremban Sessions Court on 21 counts of fixing matches, while a Singapore businessman was arrested as he was believed to be a bookie who was involved in fixing a match involving the President Cup’s T-Team last season.

T-Team coach Sufian Ngah was also charged in the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court on six counts of giving a RM5,000 bribe to six players from the squad for the purpose of fixing the result of a match against Pahang last year.

Cardiff City opens up Development Centre in Malaysia

Malaysian-owned Cardiff City Football Club (CCFC) will open their 1Malaysia Cardiff City (1MCC) Development Centre in Putrajaya in September.

Club chairman Datuk Chan Tien Ghee said yesterday that the development centre will be for players in three age groups -- Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16.

The establishment of the centre, he said, will hopefully put Malaysia on the world junior football league map.

"We hope to adopt a 'no borders' mentality where our players can compete with players from around the world so that they can gain better exposure, as well as getting players from overseas to get a taste of playing here," said Tien Ghee at the Nusa Mutiara Sports Complex in Johor Baru yesterday where a football clinic was held by CCFC staff and players for 153 schoolchildren and 48 coaches.

"Getting overseas players here will require offering them some additional incentives but it will be worth it."

Tien Ghee said Cardiff FC, a premier Welsh team, plan to enhance their presence in the country by setting up satellite centres in Malacca, Kelantan, Johor and Pahang.

The one-day clinic was part of the club's 11-day tour which started in Kelantan on July 15 and is scheduled to end this Sunday.

The aim of the tour was to give local youths opportunities to be exposed to an organised and structured football system.

Cardiff FC are playing in the Championship (Division Two) of the English league.

Milo junior camps to identify young talents

Former Malaysian international Datuk Santokh Singh has urged the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and state sports associations to take full advantage of the "Milo Play More Learn More" junior sports camps being held throughout the country, to identify talented youngsters.
Santokh officiated the launch of the first of 12 such junior sports camps organised by Milo at the Dewan Komuniti MBPJ field in Kota Damansara on June 26.

He said the large gathering of players was also a good opportunity for sports associations to apply the latest in coaching techniques.

"Milo has done a great job in organising these one-day camps to give young children the chance to learn the proper skills of the game. However, the short duration may not be enough to fully develop their skills," said Santokh.
 "FAM and state (sports) associations should use this chance to scout for new talent at grassroots level events like this to be further trained. This will add more talented players to boost the development of football in Malaysia.

"(Sports) associations should also take the opportunity to come and apply the latest in coaching and training techniques due to the high number of participants available."

Santokh praised the organisers of the camp for involving local residents associations and parents. "It is good to get parents and residents involved as they can continue to organise such events as they already have learnt the skills. They can be more involved with their children's activities."

More than 300 children under the age of 12 took part in the camp, which was intended to introduce them to the basic skills as well as inculcate good sporting values in today's youth for four sports -- football, netball, basketball and hockey.

The camp consisted of coaching clinics taught by qualified coaches which ended with mini-tournaments to give the children the chance to apply the new skills they had learnt during the clinic.

The next "Milo Play More Learn More" junior sports camps will be held at various venues.

The upcoming camps :

July 17: Bukit Bendera, Penang;
July 30: Kuching Family Park, Sarawak;
Sept 18: Temerloh, Pahang;
Sept 25: Bukit Serkam, Malacca;
Oct 2: Larut Tin, Perak;
Oct 9: Pasir Gudang, Johor;
Oct 15: Kampung Pasir, Kelantan;
Oct 22: Jertih, Terengganu;

Sarawak football development programme running smoothly

The Sarawak Football Development Programme (SFDP), which is into its second year, is running very smoothly and right on track.

Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) director Francis Nyurang Ding said yesterday all parties involved in the running of the programme including Sarawak Education Department, Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) and MSNS have played their respective roles well.

“We are more focused in the football development and identifying new talents in the programme through an annual SFDP Inter-Centre Football Tournament which is organised by the State Education Department with technical assistance from FAS and funding from MSNS,” he said at MSNS office recently.

Francis said the ongoing 2nd SFDP Inter-Centre Football Tournament would be held until July 21 at three zones namely Southern Zone comprising Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman and Betong, Central Zone (Sibu, Sarikei, Mukah and Kapit) and Northern Zone (Miri, Bintulu and Limbang).

“I would like to thank the State Education Department for having successfully organised the tournament last year and I strongly believe that they will do another good job this year,” he said.

Francis Nyurang said the tournament would be aimed at selecting the best players into the Emerging Talent Pool where they would be groomed to represent Sarawak at Sukma and President Cup competitions, and later vie for promotion to the senior state team.

Kuching District Education Office is hosting host the event.

“The Northern Zone competition will be hosted by the Miri District Education Office at Miri Mini Stadium from July 11-16 while the Central Zone competition will be hosted by Sibu District Education Office at Tun Zaidi Stadium from July 18-23,” said SFDP project manager Lucas Kallang who is also the MSNS Sports Officer.

He said among the objectives of the tournament are to monitor the progress of the trainees in various centres, identify players for Sukma XV and President Cup next year, identify talented players in different age categories to keep track of their progress and their details to be kept in SFDP database, and prepare for the Borneo Games in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia from Dec 4-11.

“Trophies will be awarded to champions, runners-up and third placings while individual awards will also be given to Best Player, Best Goalkeeper and Top Scorer at the respective zones,” said Lucas.

A skills competition will also be organised between the competitions on ball dribbling, passing, shooting and controlling, headed by SFDP coordinator Mohamad Mantali.

Lucas said coaching seminars would also be conducted by SFDP technical director Alan Vest during the competitions at all zones.
“Vest will conduct the seminars in Kuching at Miri Mini Stadium from July 12-15 and at Tun Zaidi Stadium in Sibu from July 18-21,” he added.
“We anticipate an improvement in the players’ performance in terms of team techniques and tactics and I am also looking forward to see an improvement of the coaching approach such as psychological coaching approach.”

Lucas also hoped that the players will display a professional approach to the game.
SFDP is a five-year programme implemented by KPSU through MSNS with the main objective to develop football at school level.

MSNS will work closely with Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) to develop football in the state.

The scouting for talents are also carried out at FAS youth competitions, MSS division and state level competitions and at Tabuan Jaya State Sports School.

State associations urged to strengthen their finance

All state football associations have been urged to strengthen their financial situation to ensure the welfare of players are looked after.

Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Razali Ibrahim said among the factors contributing to corruption in football was the lack of emphasis on the welfare of the players. He was replying to Senator Datuk Seri Mohd Effendi Norwawi at Dewan Negara today.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) had taken several steps in its effort to eradicate corruption in football which gave the game a bad image as was the case in 1993 and 1997 when 179 players were convicted of the offence.

"FAM had launched the Malaysian League integrity campaign 2011 during the FA Cup final match recently where both teams wore the integrity armband and put up a banner as a symbol of rejection against all negative elements," he said.
Razali said, other than placing a police officer at all state football associations, the FAM, in cooperation with the Education Ministry, through its talent search programme at grassroots levels, had given talks on football
corruption.

Recently, the local football scene was shocked by allegations of corruption after two football coaches from two President Cup teams and a bookie were charged in court for alleged match-fixing.
They are still awaiting trial.

English club Tottenham chooses Malaysia as Asian base

PETALING JAYA, July 5 (Bernama) -- After Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton, English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspurs has also chosen Malaysia as its base for enhancing their Football Development Programme in the region.

Tottenham Club Ambassador, Gary Mabbutt said the programme with the co-operation of a company, Football Focus Asia, will unearth potential footballers in Malaysia and other Asian countries as well.

"Through this extensive programme which will bring Tottenham coaches to Malaysia, football will be develop at the grassroots level to be on par with EPL standard, driving the success of Malaysian football for years to come.

"It will be great to see the first Malaysian in the EPL, playing for Tottenham," he told reporters after launching the Tottenham Hotspurs Developing Malaysia Football, here today.
Mabbutt, 50, who is also a legendary 'The Spurs' who played over 600 games for the club between 1982 until 1998 said Malaysia was selected because the club was aware of the potential in this country.

"In Malaysia, the British International School Kuala Lumpur (BISKL) is the first of many institutions throughout Asia to distinguish itself by offering one of the world best academy experiences to its students.
"We hope to expend the development programme to Hong Kong and Singapore after this to find new young talents, who can be polished to become accomplished footballers," he said.
To improve the standard of Asian football at the grass roots level, Mabbutt said the development programme would not only be centralised in England but will be spread to Malaysia and Asia.

The Academy will officially start on July 21 and open to individuals, teams and coaches.
It offers a great opportunity for Asian footballers aged 10 to 18, across all regions, to experience professional football training at its highest level.

Participants will not only learn the physical aspects of training and playing at the highest level of football, they will also gain invaluable insight into the psychology involved for playing in the EPL, along with the necessary dietary and nutritional requirements.

Tottenham's achievement in the EPL 2010/2011 was a fifth place finish, one ahead of Liverpool and four behind Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.
