Now That's What I Call Christmas Music ! (review)

Last weekend, as is our tradition on the first Sunday of December, we got all the Christmas decorations out of the garage and spent some fun family time setting up the tree and hanging tinsel on all the picture frames. I tend to let the kids get on with it, just helping out with untangling strings of fairy lights and locating drawing pins, but I do have one very important Christmas job : keeping the festive music coming ! This year, I had absolutely oodles of fab music to choose from, as I've just received these lovely new CD boxsets to review.

Absolutely utterly perfect for this time of year is the Now 100 Hits Christmas CD collection, which contains a whopping 5 CDs full of festive classics. I have to say, this is the ultimate in Christmas compilations because ... well, whatever you want, you're guaranteed it's on there ! All the classic festive pop hits are featured : Happy Xmas (War Is Over) by John Lennon, Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin' Stevens, Step Into Christmas by Elton John, Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid, Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town by The Jackson 5 ... If you're shaking your head saying I'm too old and there's nothing modern on there, you can choose some more recent Christmas hits by the likes of Leona Lewis, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Kelly Clarkson, Girls Aloud, Robbie Williams ... There are loads of golden oldies too, and can you believe it, that is all on CD number 1 ! CD 2 is full of golden oldies from the likes of Bing Crosby, Eartha Kitt and Elvis Presley, CD 3 brings us up to the era of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson, CD 4 hits the classics, with songs from The Beach Boys, Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole, while the final CD number 5 gets back to modern artists, featuring (amongst others) Whitney Houston, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. It's a great CD collection because there is something for everyone, so it's perfect if you're hosting parents and grandparents over Christmas. In total, there are 100 songs and it has a bargaintastic RRP of £10.99, making it great value.

As an extra treat for Christmas, the musical magicians at NOW are also re-releasing NOW That’s What I Call Disney, which is full of your fondest childhood memories. Alongside three discs of Disney joy, it features a bonus Christmas disc which includes Frozen and the Nightmare before Christmas. Once you’ve got it, you’ll never want to Let it Go! The festive disc is the one that we're playing most at the moment and it features 21 songs by Mickey and the Gang and The Disney Holiday Chorus - perfect for some festive fun with the kids !

The final offering is another 5 CD boxset, Now 100 Hits Sing-A-Long, which is guaranteed to get you joining in even if you think you don't like karaoke ! From Dolly Parton (9 To 5) and Cyndi Lauper (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun) to Avril Lavigne (Complicated) and John Legend (All Of Me), there are songs to appeal to all tastes and styles. It's a great mixture of hits, perfect for a long drive or a mammoth cleaning session ... or even just dancing off a few festive calories !

These CDs would all be great as a stocking filler or Secret Santa gift, but if you want to get all hi-tech, you have another option. Listening is made even easier with the NOW Music app, where subscribers can access all the NOW compilations plus even more playlists and music, for only £4.99 a month with no contract or adverts. It's the easiest and most enjoyable way to access music on your devices .

Giveaway #652 : Win a Teletubbies Big Hugs CD - closed - winner Fiona Karbal

Twenty years on from their million-selling No. UK 1 smash Teletubbies Say Eh-oh!, the fab four are once more eyeing the charts with an irresistibly catchy new album, Big Hugs. Featuring a mix of new songs from the current series of the iconic show, alongside a selection of children’s classics with a Tubby twist, the record will be available both digitally and on CD from 13 October, 2017.

Music and dance are integral to Teletubbies, so what better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking preschool show than with a brand new album for youngsters to sing and dance along with.

With distribution handled by The Children’s Group, Big Hugs will be available from HMV, Amazon.co.uk, iTunes, & select FOPP locations in the U.K. It will also be released in the US, Canada, Australia and throughout Europe. Tracks will also be available to download individually, with the title track “Big Hugs” available digitally on September 29th and can be streamed on Spotify.

Narrator Daniel Rigby lends his vocals to many of the songs, including the title track Big Hugs, the popular Bottom Bump Song and Tiddlytubbies Songtime, which introduces the world to the delightful Tiddlytubbies. In addition to music from the first two series of the revamped Teletubbies, the 19-song soundtrack features timeless favourites that kids know and love performed by the voice of the Tiddlytubbies and Voice Trumpet, Teresa Gallagher. Preschoolers will be moving and grooving to children’s classics such as Wheels on the Bus, Four in a Bed and Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.

Daniel said: “It’s amazing to sing the Teletubbies theme tune. Highly surreal, but wonderful, as well, and any one of my friends, or my family, who I say, 'I am now singing the theme tune of the Teletubbies,' it's like I'm saying, 'I've been knighted,' or, yeah, 'I've won £1 million’.”

The full track listing is: Teletubbies Theme; Big Hugs; Tubby Car Song; Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes; Tubby Packing Dance; Tiddlytubbies Songtime; Bottom Bump Song; Tubby Phone Dance; Tiddlytubbies Playtime; Four Little Monkeys; Puddle Dance; If You're Happy and You Know It; Party Dance; The Custard Ride; Stomp Dance; Wheels on the Bus; Old MacDonald Had a Farm; Five in the Bed; and Tiddlytubbies Sleepybyes.

Mr Tumble's releasing his first ever Christmas album ! (review)

I have a bit of an unwritten rule here at The Madhouse that we wait until Halloween is out of the way then it's all systems go to start the big build up to Christmas. I love all the festive cheer in the weeks before the big day and the heart-melting magic of Christmas Eve itself, especially when you have kids (or one kid now, for us) who still believe in Santa (possibly for not much longer *sniff* !). As far as I'm concerned, it's now quite reasonable to start making Christmas crafts and getting the kids thinking about their wishlists and wandering around the shops oohing and aahing at all the Christmas displays. I don't usually start dusting off my Christmas CDs until the start of December but this year, we'll be starting earlier, because we've just received a copy of Justin Fletcher's brand new festive album, called Mr Tumble's Something Special Christmas Party.

I don't know what it is about Mr Tumble that makes him so universally appealing to kids - maybe his cheeky grin and silly antics, or perhaps his genuine warmth when talking to the children on his shows ? - but whatever it is, there is something extra special (no pun intended !) about having Mr Tumble singing all the Christmas classics.

The CD's tracklist includes 20 festive songs :

1 Here Comes Santa Claus
2 Do You Wanna Build a Snowman
3 Santa Claus is Coming to Town
4 Winter Wonderland
5 Frosty the Snowman
6 It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
7 A Sleigh Ride Together with You
8 White Christmas
9 I Can't Wait for Christmas
10 Silent Night
11 Let it Snow
12 Jingle Bells
13 All I want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth
14 Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree
15 Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
16 12 Days of Christmas
17 Little Drummer Boy
18 The Xmas Song
19 Have Yourself a Merry Little Xmas Time
20 We Wish You a Merry Xmas

As you can see, it's a lovely mix of traditional songs that everyone of all ages knows, like Jingle Bells and Silent Night, as well as some older classics that the kids probably wouldn't have heard of so they'll look very impressed when you know all the words ! Just to turn the tables around, there is also the Frozen song, Do You Wanna Build a Snowman, so the kids can teach you the words. For a TV show that is based around the whole idea of being totally inclusive, it's probably no coincidence that there are no religious songs.

No stranger to the charts, Justin Fletcher’s previous album went GOLD in 2012, but this is the first album release from Mr Tumble. It's perfect as the background music to our festive crafts sessions and it would also be "something special" as a Christmas gift for any Mr Tumble fan !

CD review : The Music of Nashville - Original Soundtrack (volume 1)

I think I'm getting a little bit addicted to Nashville ! I reviewed the boxset of the first season a couple of weeks ago after watching the first of five discs, but I've been watching back to back episodes so I'm already halfway through the final disc. I'm totally hooked and am already wondering what I'll do with myself once I've watched the final episode. (Update : since starting to write this review yesterday, I've now finished watching the final episodes - aggghhhhh what a place to leave it ! I couldn't help myself, I had to google "Nashville season 2 spoilers" to find out what happens after the explosive final scenes !)

Well, help is at hand ! I've just received a CD of the original soundtrack of the show. The CD features ten songs (eleven tracks but there are two versions of the same song, even if they are very different). The tracklisting is as follows :

1. "Buried Under" - Connie Britton
2. "If I Didn't Know Better" - Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen
3. "Undermine" - Hayden Panettiere and Charles Esten
4. "Sideshow" - Charles Esten
5. "Wrong Song" - Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere
6. "No One Will Ever Love You" - Connie Britton and Charles Esten
7. "Twist of Barbwire" - Jonathan Jackson
8. "Love Like Mine" - Hayden Panettiere
9. "Telescope" - Lennon Stella and Maisy Stella
10. "When the Right One Comes Along"- Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio
11. "Telescope" (radio mix) - Hayden Panettiere

The songs are all brilliant and I've been playing the CD a lot, but I do have a couple of niggles. Firstly, my absolutely favourite songs from the show aren't on there - Fade Into You, sung by Gunnar & Scarlett on the show, and the absolutely brilliant Ho Hey, sung by Rayna's girls. I bet you can guess what I'm going to say next - there's a volume 2 available too which does feature, amongst others, the two songs that I felt were missing from the original CD. With a runtime of just over half an hour, I felt that the record company were being a bit stingy. Why didn't they just put both volumes together and sell it as a double album? I'm sure most fans will end up buying both volumes anyway !

If you still haven't discovered Nashville yet, here's a little look at what you're missing. This is my favourite song on this album - I love the chemistry between Rayna and Deacon.

And just for the fans (including me!), here are those two songs that you'll have to buy volume 2 for !

So young and so full of talent !

More great chemistry and another brilliant voice from Clare Bowen.

Right, who wants to buy me volume 2 for my birthday then ?!

I have some fabulous news for fans of the show - you can win a copy of BOTH volumes of the CD in my giveaway, coming right up. I'm just too good to you !

Zeamu Music CD review

If you're a parent of a toddler or pre-teen, you basically have two choices when it comes to music. Either you listen to chart music and cringe inwardly when your little ones innocently start singing along with  inappropriate lyrics, or you drive yourself round the bend listening to mind-numbing nursery rhyme type CDs. Well, it seems that a new option is becoming more widely available - child-oriented music that is good enough that parents will be listening to it even when the kids aren't about !

I recently posted my review of Nick Cope's What Colour Is Your T-shirt? CD and was pleased to discover a kids' CD that sounded like "real" music, but when Zeamu Music sent through their CD for us to check out, I discovered that they've gone one better - I've been playing this loads with or without the kids because it's so upbeat and boppy that it always puts me in a good mood.

Here's one of the tracks - OMG - on youtube to give you an idea. I guarantee you'll be tapping your pen on the desk and bopping in your seat !

You could play it in a nightclub and I bet half of the dancers wouldn't even realise it was from a kids' CD ! It sounds like real, grown-up music - good real, grown-up music at that - so I wasn't really surprised to see the big names linked to the project when I clicked through for more information. The creators explain : "The album Zeamu Music consists of 14 eclectic upbeat, dance-leaning pop and indie songs with a sprinkle of R&B and rock, written and produced by, amongst others, Grammy nominated Owen Parker (James Morrison, Rebecca Ferguson, Annie Lennox, Girls Aloud), Casper & Jonas (Damon Albarn, Gorillaz, Beth Orton, Keith Levene of The Clash, Noel Gallagher) Jimi Ashmore (Star Sailor, So Solid, Sugababes) Lee Gretton (Ads for ITV, MTV, Sky, Olympics 2012) and Jonathan Pilcher (Block Party, Super Furry Animals)." Wow !

Similarly, I wasn't really surprised, but I was impressed, to learn that the music was created by real parents - no doubt sick to death of CBeebies type songs or Wheels on the Bus rehashes ! The press release explains : "Zeamu Music Ltd was set up by ‘Mumpreneurs’, Barbara Bishop (40) and Fiona Case (41), together with Creative Director, Simon Case (43) who were inspired to set up the music company to bridge the gap in children’s music by providing authentic, quality mainstream pop music that children could relate to, is age appropriate yet sophisticated enough to put the magic back into music. “We all love music and our idea was born out of being parents wanting to provide fresh, innocent and fun music for our kids that they can identify with and take ownership of”, said Barbara."

I've listened to a lot of kiddie-oriented CD's in my time, but this is the first one that actually makes me want to get up and dance - actually, we do, quite frequently, doing crazy dancing in the front room because I figure it's got to be as good as zumba and can count towards my "get fit" New Year's resolution ! When you actually take the time to listen to the lyrics, they're very well written too though, dealing with themes such as bullying and being scared of the dark, alongside more carefree topics like summer holidays and best friends. My personal fave is Doing the Robot which deals with how embarrassing it is when your parents hit the dance floor at weddings !

If the words "kids' music" have you inwardly groaning, this is undoubtedly the CD you need to change your mind. And if you've had a listen and are hooked, you might like to know that all the lyrics are available as printable song sheets on the Zeamu website, alongside colouring sheets when everyone needs to calm down again after all that dancing ! Altogether now ... "Got my girls to my left (hey!), My brothers to my right (ho!),
Put your hands in the air, Gonna have a good time, O. M. G. It’s the weekend!"

Nick Cope kids' CD review : What Colour is Your T-Shirt?

Quite some time ago, I was contacted by singer-songwriter Nick Cope to ask if we'd like to review one his kids' CDs. Although he now focuses on creating music for children, he has had twenty years of experience in music, including international success as lead singer and songwriter with The Candyskins in the 1990s.

We received the CD entitled What Colour is Your T-Shirt? but there are two others available called My Socks and Why is the Sky Blue? Each CD costs £10 but you can currently buy all three for £25.

I have to admit, I should have written this review months ago but there is a very good reason why it got overlooked - the Madhouse Mini-testers put it in the car to try it out and they loved it so much, it never made it back into my "to be reviewed" box! It was only when I received the Christmas newsletter to announce the release of the newest CD that it gave me a much needed nudge to get my review written !

The CD contains 10 songs which all have lyrics that will appeal to kids but tunes that won't drive their parents to distraction, even when it ends up being put on a loop ! You can tell that Nick Cope has a background in proper grown-up music because this is real music with real instruments, not the irritating headache-inducing bopathons that constitute normal kid-oriented music !

You'd be forgiven for thinking that the track-listing doesn't really look any different to classic kids' CDs :

01. As I lie here in my bed
02. Here we go
03. 5 little monkeys
04. Gravity
05. What colour is your t-shirt?
06. Move around
07. Best foot forward
08. Little fish
09. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
10. Clap your hands

But I really appreciate the witty stories in the songs and the educational aspects that can be developed - discussing gravity and the different languages in 1,2,3,4,5 for example. The main advantage is definitely the fact that it sounds like real music that grown-ups would listen to without the kids though (just maybe with different lyrics !).

To celebrate the release of the new CD, Nick Cope is offering a free download  of Snowman kind of day to the first 100 people who enter their email address here. You can also watch some videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/nickcopesongs or listen to samples on the website http://www.nickcope.co.uk/.

Pop Party 10 CD review

I couldn't help but smile when I read the track listing for the Pop Party 10 CD that we received to review because it's like looking at a greatest hits album created by Sophie. Every single one of her favourite artists is on there - Katy Perry ... Justin Bieber ... JLS ... Carly Rae Jepsen ... One Direction ... Jessie J ... Rihanna.

In total there are 22 tracks and they're all big hits - you don't get any of the rubbish songs that many compilations have that are there as fillers and that you always skip when playing the CD ! I can remember many an hour whiled away singing into my hairbrush in front of the bedroom mirror when I was young so I thought it was very cool that they've enclosed cards with the lyrics on, as well as a DVD featuring the music videos for your kids to dance along to. The videos are as important as the songs for the Youtube generation so this is a really nice touch.

If you're looking for a stocking filler for a teen or tween, this is guaranteed to make them squeal. Then sing. Loudly. For hours on end. You have been warned !

Complete track listing :

CD

1. Psy - Gangnam Style (강남스타일)
2. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe

The Day is Here Little Monkeys Sing for Charity

Combining charity fundrasising with the current Olympics frenzy sounds like a stroke of genius to me ! Read on and see how you can get your kids involved.
***************************************

Monkey Music – the UK’s premium music group for pre-school children – has recorded a special charity song to celebrate an amazing summer of sport. Performed by young children, aged 7, 8 and 9, and written especially for Monkey Music, the Anthem, 'The Day is Here!', tells the exciting story of a running race.

The Day is Here’ will not only provide a fun sporting interlude during Monkey Music classes across the UK but also, by selling it online to the families and friends of Monkey Music’s 10,000 children, Monkey Music also aims to raise much needed funds for music therapy charity, Nordoff Robbins.

Nordoff Robbins is a national specialist music charity, delivering 50,000 music therapy sessions a year to a broad range of people in schools, hospitals and care homes across the UK. Their qualified music therapists specifically help people with a range of challenges including autism, dementia, mental health problems, stroke, brain injury, learning difficulties, depression and in some cases clients have threatening or terminal illness, such as cancer.

Angie Coates, Founder of Monkey Music, said;

“Both Monkey Music and Nordoff Robbins offer children fresh opportunities and life changing experiences through music. We believe that by working together we can raise awareness of the benefits of music for everyone. It’s lovely to use 2012 and the summer of sport to engage the very youngest of children in the excitement of sport and the joy of music.”

Jo Carter, Director of Fundraising & Communications Nordoff Robbins said:

We are delighted to be working with Monkey Music, to be sharing our mutual believe in the power of music and to help raise funds to continue transforming the lives of vulnerable children and adults across the UK. As a charity we rely entirely on voluntary donations, so the Monkey Music song released this summer is a great way to raise funds and awareness.”

What’s next?

Monkey Music classes will learn ‘The Day is Here’ during their Monkey Music classes over the coming weeks. Then, from the end of May the ‘The Day is Here’ will be officially released and available to buy online with all profits going to charity.
