Mexico

A week ago we returned from the longest vacation we have had in a long while. We went to visit our friends and family in Mexico and stayed there three weeks. We went to the north of the country, from where my husband is and then to central Mexico as the adventure part of our trip.

It was an intense trip, full of emotion, discoveries, adventures, tears, smiles, food, plane trips, car trips, stomach flu and heat, lots of heat as you'd expect from a summer in Mexico.

The loveliest parts where the hugs to our families and friends, the meals together, the smiles, conversation, support and love.

There were a lot of tears, too, unfortunately, not of the happy kind of tears but of sadness and anger because there is much injustice in my native country. More than a year ago I told you about an injustice committed against my sister-in-law and unfortunately things got only worse and it all unravel while we were there.

I won't get into details 'cause it's a long story, but i'll only say that she's now in prison, accused of a fraud she didn't commit and her family (my brother and two young children) is fighting everyday, very hard to take her out of there. can you imagine how it feels when your three year old ask you when are you coming home and you don't have an answer? i was there, i saw it, and there's nothing more sad, no situation more unjust that seeing that family struggle to keep their heads up and fight against a machine of the vilest kind. They are fighting, fighting as hard as they can: fighting to keep the children happy, my brother is fighting to give them a smile and help them with homework while he's crumbling inside; to go to work everyday to keep up with bills while the only thing he'd like is to be with his wife. My sister in law is fighting to keep strong and endure the horrors of a mexican prison wondering why the fuck is she there when she's absolutely innocent; they are also fighting to take her out, with a team of lawyers. And I'm trying to help them, too. If you care to join my cause and help a family in desperate need, please purchase something from my "Hopes and Dreams" collection, all the sales from those pieces will go directly to them, a kind, loving, honest family that is in great need of help.

So, as you can see it was a hard time, and like them, imagine how many people are suffering injustices right now. Some countries have hard, cold machines for justice systems that allows only the people who have money to buy justice. Those of us living in places like Canada, we are so lucky, so lucky. Of course bad things happen here, too, but you simply cannot compare the horrors that happen in Mexico  or in so many other countries. All those people looking for refuge, just imagine the injustice they had to go through in their countries to just want to leave everything they know, everything they have in hopes of finding a better life, some peace, some quiet.

As you can see, my mind is in a hard place right now, so I'll stop here. I'll just show you some beauty, because there is, there is beauty and goodness everywhere, and it's worth to search for it and to be happy when you find it.

All in all, it was a hard summer vacation, but i'll take from it the best I can, there are lessons to be learn in everything, even if right now they are hard to see.

Morning light hight up in the mountains and desert of Saltillo.
A cacti struggling for ground in the rocky desert.
We went hiking to the desert and found a little store in a small village, the counter was painted with a huge Mexican flag and emblem: the eagle over the cacti, eating a snake. The hike in the desert didn't go that well, Amelia got thorns on her feet for stepping on cacti so we had to walk back. The locals at the little shop were laughing at us for our lack of endurance!

Puebla, Mexico was a wonderful discovery. I truly don't know why on earth I didn't know how utterly amazing this city is! it's one of the most wonderful places i have ever been to.
Huge colonial houses with their courtyards and balconies everywhere in Puebla.

This is my favourite photo from the trip: a balloon merchant walking in the streets of Puebla.
In Puebla, we stayed in a very, very old building (16th century) that for many centuries served as a convent. Now turned to a hotel, it keep the old, heavy doors and round windows that once, were barred with iron. There were hidden courtyards round corners and lovely gardens.

This is the library Palafoxiana: considered the first public library in the Americas founded in 1646. Such a gem, such a treasure!

And here we are, little family. Thank you so much for reading my post!

Weekend

It has been a while! Things get busier and busier by the day and it's nice when I have time to come here and blog a bit. Blogging is one of those things that make me feel like I have time for my things, that I own it. Of course I don't own my time but the illusion of it feels pretty good!

Last weekend we went camping, it as so much fun specially because there were many families and well, kids are funny and they keep you extremely busy so I didn't have time to complain about mosquitoes or be afraid about the snake I almost step in!

I hope you enjoy the photos :)

Have a lovely week!

Heat Wave - Look Book

I showed you the other day some of the photos of my new collection + look book and the inspiration behind the new pieces but there are so many more beautiful photos from the look book that I can't help but share them with you!

I was so lucky to work again with the talented photographer Sarah Emily St-Gelais who captured perfectly the feel of my new collection through her lens. And I feel also very fortunate to have worked with an amazing team of lovely, lovely young women that helped me making everything perfect for the photos: Sara Emily as I told you before, Sarah Ladouceur worked her make-up magic; Katherine Berthelot was our beautiful model; All the gorgeous clothing you see is designed and made by Zoe G Kocsis which styled the shoot and Siam Obregon made a little video to document our adventures.

I cannot say enough how grateful I am to have worked with these girls. Their energy, advice, kind words and time were such that I feel humble and grateful to the creative community I live in and to their amazing kindness. Please, if you are reading this, check out their work, they are amazing and so talented, such bright minds!

For the look book, I wanted something simple, fresh, beautiful and uncomplicated to truly bring out the feel of the collection. And now, the look book!

Click on the photos to shop/learn more details about the Heat Wave collection.

Thanks so much for checking out my look book, I hope you like it as much as I do!

Heat wave

Unexpected.
The ways creativity hits you sometimes is quite amazing. I always find myself inspired by many things, as I'm sure every body does: you are reading a book, travelling, listening to a song, walking on the street, you find a beautiful branch or simply washing the dishes and then it hits you, bam! an idea that is full of possibilities.

Many months ago I was sleeping one night and I was dreaming: in my dream I was sitting on my bench, busy making a pair of earrings. The earrings were roundish, they were golden and on top of the gold piece there was a detail made of a silver metal that contrasted so nicely with the gold. The silver detail had this wavy shape on the bottom and they looked beautiful. First thing I did when I woke up was to run, open my sketch book and start drawing what I remembered. To my big surprise the following night the same happened, this time in my dream I was making a ring using the gold/silver material, just a simple band. Based on the earrings design/mix of metals I designed my new collection and when I was doing so, my awe was great as to the way everything had came, this unconscious idea, this unexpected gift from a dream. And now the collection is finished and I'm ready to show it and offer it to you!

About dreams.
I couldn't be happier at how things came up: many dreams came to reality, not just literal dreams. One of them, to make a big necklace. The Heat Wave necklace is bigger than any necklace I've done before. I encounter a big problem when I was making it: I couldn't solder it with my torch, it wasn't potent enough. You see I have a portable torch, not a proper, professional one. The only solution is taking the big pieces of the necklace to a local studio so they can help me out with the soldering. This is opening new possibilities as I'm planning now on improving my work space to be able to get a decent torch at last and then I'll make it entirely at my studio!

Heat wave.
Once I sat at my bench to start making collection, all the colours and shapes started to make me think of the south of Mexico where I grew up: of the sun, the heat; I started seeing the shapes as metal melting and immediately started calling the collection 'heatwave'. For me this was a temporary name, something that came to my mind but I wanted to put it a name that reflected the way the collection was conceived but never came to think of anything and each day Heatwave grew more on me, now I believe it captures the feel of the collection entirely.

So here it is, the work of a year at last available for you all to see and enjoy. I hope you love it as much as I do!

The rings.
I made three different rings for this collection: The heatwave, the Sunrise and the Sunset ring.

The heat wave is just a big band that's tall on the front and gradually shortens on the back with a nice v detail. The Sunrise ring features a wavy design on the front, sort of like a little crown. And the Sunset features a round shape on the front. They can be worn with the design up or down, looks pretty cool both ways! All rings come in silver and brass.

The bracelet.
The cuff bracelet is made of brass but it also can be done in silver. It features a wavy design on the front of the bracelet and it's perfect to stack with other bracelets!

The earrings:
The earrings, oh the earrings! I just love them. Not only because they were the origin of the collection and the subconscious gifts of my sleepy mind but because the shape and contrasts are beautiful. They are made of brass ans sterling silver.

The necklaces:
I made two necklaces, one is the Heat Wave necklace, a core to the collection and the other is the carved necklace. I originally planned to make a pair of earrings to complement this necklace but couldn't find the time, maybe in the future! This necklace is a long beauty that features a simple U shape for pendant and I carved a little line pattern on it. It's very simple, very minimalist and a fave of mine!

Coming up next, I'll show you the rest of the photos of my lookbook that were shoot by Sarah-Emily St-Gelais and an amazing team that I can't wait to let you know of! Thank you so much for visiting my blog and for your amazing support!

A winter day

A while ago I made this little bronze house. I made it because I wanted a paperweight for myself and well, because I am obsessed with houses, so the two things came together quite nicely. I love my little house and I use it mostly as a small sculpture that sits on my desk, beside some of my treasures like my rock collection and old photos.

Since the beginning I though I'd put it on my Etsy shop but I just couldn't get myself to photograph it. I think my mind works funny about my product photography: When I design something I see stories around the piece and my mind doesn't wait long to start imagining, seeing how these stories look, so it's not just the item but what's around it, what it means. And when I made the little house there was a lot of daydreaming and imagining about it so I knew the kind of photos I wanted to take to show it to you. When the particular idea/the plan for the shoot didn't quite translate good out of the daydream, I didn't push it, I just let it rest there knowing it'd come. Some weeks ago I was working on the studio and there was copious snow falling outside; the little bronze house shoot came to mind again and I said "yes, a winter scene. In a forest." And I started cutting the little paper trees. I put a piece of  white tissue paper covering the trees to make it look softer but I was delighted when the paper made the scene look like "snowing", at least looks so to me! hehehe, my imaginations runs wild, I tell you. You can see bellow how it looks without the paper.

Anyway, the little bronze house as well as the photos you see here, are very special to me, I hope you enjoy them.
