Slug

So I've had a pretty sluggish weekend. Did manage to get most of my reading done, but not all. I swear I'll finish it right after this. Or before I go to bed. Really :) Did also get out of the house at least, to Chinatown/Little Italy on Saturday and to MoMA QNS this afternoon. The weather's been gorgeous.

Drama

So we had quite a bit of drama in my class today. One of the other students (this was one of my grad classes, not student teaching) said she felt ill in the middle of class, and the next thing we knew she was on the floor and had fainted. She quickly regained consciousness, threw up, but then could talk and everything so hopefully she's not too ill. Anyway, one of the other people in class called 911, and the firemen and paramedics came, and they took her to the hospital. Talk about drama!! But yeah...on a totally unrelated note, I ran two miles on the elliptical in 18 minutes today, woohoo!

Familiar

Today was a pretty good day. A few tiny minor annoyances here and there (inc. forgetting Scrubs was on - only caught the last 10 minutes) but you know, it's one of those days that I'd love to have all the time. There's something really great about seeing familiar faces and having converstaions with people you haven't seen in a while :) It was a really cool afternoon. Plus, I got to eat a Beard Papa, which is always good :)

ArtBots

Went to see the coolest exhibition today. It was called ArtBots, and they had all these robots that either were works of art or created works of art. Very very cool. Almost makes me want to start tinkering around with robots, but I don't have the technical know-how. That's my problem...I see all these cool things I want to do, but just don't know enough to do much. I guess I'll stick to appreciating stuff then.

My two favourite exhibits at the show.

Allergies and Whatnot

Was walking along the street fair on Broadway between 110th and 116th today, when got hit by stupid allergies. Which is kind of annoying because I meant to spend the whole of today reading stuff for my classes, but it's hard to read with allergies. Oh well. Also, on a random note, I realise I've been saying crap a lot lately. Don't know why. Hmmm.

A Mile

So ran another mile on the elliptical today, woohoo! And did it in 10 minutes too (did two miles in 30 mintues yesterday). Of course, woke up this morning with aching aching arms, but decided to keep the momentum going anyway. Pretty busy day in school because the associate teacher was out for Rosh Hashana, but good still.

Exercise

So I managed to exercise on the elliptical machine at work for half an hour today!! :) Finally, I'm getting my act together - am hoping to work out at least twice a week. Of course, I messed it all up by proceeding to eat junk for dinner...but that was only because I forgot I didn't have any stuff to cook at home and so didn't go to the supermarket. Oh well, I guess you have to start somewhere.

Roof Recess

So the kids in my student teaching school have recess on the roof some days, and the funny thing is that today, I could hear them from my apartment!! :) [I only teach on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, so was home this afternoon] That's how close I live to school - I'm on one end of the block and the school is on the other (about two minute walk). But anyway, yeah, it was nice listenining to the kids have fun...wouldn't want to be the people living in the apartments right next to school though - boy are they noisy :)

We Have Liftoff!

I'm psyched. We finally have cable! Can you tell I like my TV? :)

First Week

So the first week of school went pretty well. Love the kids in my class. There are some characters, some super sweet ones and all of them are pretty cool in general. Haven't taught kids this young (8-9 yrs) in a while, but hey, at least they're all shorter than I am ;) Classes at Bank Street are going well too (then again, have only had one class so far). All in all, a good and productive week (the cable guy is coming tomorrow so we'll finally have TV!). And I intend to sit down over the weekend and clear my to do list as much as I can before classes really get into full swing. We'll see how that goes then.
It's the 3rd anniversary of September 11 tomorrow (or later today). Doesn't seem like it was that long ago, but seems like much more time has passed too. Weird how time works.

Rainy Day

What a way to start the school year (it was the first day of class at my student teaching school, and my first day of class at Bank Street for the semester). There was so much rain they had to shut some subway lines down and there was apparently widespread flooding all over the place! Good thing I live within walking distance of both my schools. But yeah, talk about wet! So far things are good, but I imagine they'll get pretty crazy pretty quick. It's good to be back in a classroom though (definitely as a teacher, still aprehensive about being a student again :)

Labelling

I really like labelling things, in the literal sense of the word. Spent a large part of today making labels for various things around the classroom that I'll be a student teacher in. The kids start school tomorrow, or later today as it were. Things are getting busy, which is good because it means I'm actually being productive.

Noisy Neighbours

As I'm sitting here, there is an annoying dog barking outside my window. He's been barking since yesterday afternoon, without taking a break overnight. He didn't use to exist (or he didn't use to bark at least). There's also a kid yelling at the top of his lungs in Spanish, although I can't hear the person he is presumably to be talking to. I wish I understood Spanish, it seems like it'd be an interesting conversation.

Dublin Muslide

I think I'm addicted to Ben & Jerry's Dublin Mudslide...it's the bestest ice-cream flavour ever! :) I hope they don't stop making it.

Connected!

We finally got the phone to work. Not that I even use the phone that much or anything, but it's still exciting. Ah, the little things in life...

11 Days

It's been eleven days since I got here, and I still don't have (legal) Internet, phone and cable (ie. any TV at all). I think I'd be climbing the walls if it weren't for the truly wonderful New York Public Library (for all your book and DVD needs!) and my trusty Powerbook. The phone was supposed to start working today, but I guess not. Have finished watching Series 1 & 2 of Father Ted on DVD, am now working my way through some Monty Python's Flying Circus and The Triplets of Belleville. Lest you think I've just been slugging in front of the Powerbook screen, I've actually also done quite a bit in the past week and a half - painted my apartment and moved bits of furniture around, started at my student teaching school, went for a Graham Norton Effect taping, played softball in Central Park (we lost 11-3), ate a lot, read four books, shopped a bit. You get the idea. I guess I won't have nearly as much time on my hands when classes actually start next week, so I should enjoy it while I can...

So...

...setting up a blog is apparently the kind of thing I do when I truly want to procrastinate, even though I have been very much against getting one of these things. Oh well.
