Peace, Love & Pug

Peace, Love & Pug...I think this custom Christmas card says it all.

My famous client Allison wanted her custom illustration she used previously to be incorporated into her Christmas cards this season. She wanted some retro and could also use her purple peace sign. I think this holiday card turned out perfect for her and her pug Tootie!

Holiday Etiquette: At the Office

Business etiquette is an integral aspect of professional life, requiring both knowledge and tact. During the holidays, people can be even less certain of “what to do” or what not to do. Here we’ve compiled a few basics to get you through the holiday season with confidence and grace:

Should I give my boss a holiday gift?

Generally, no. It could easily be perceived as trying to win favor. However, a pooled gift from you and other employees that isn't too expensive or personal is fine.

Should I give gifts to my direct reports?

It's your call. It's certainly a nice gesture and a great way to acknowledge those who work for you. If you do decide to give gifts, give across the board: for example, don't give to only one department head, but not the other two. Good gift ideas include gift certificates, tickets to the theater or a sporting event, books, CDs and food items.

What about co-workers?

The Secret Santa system or a holiday grab bag are two of the easier ways to handle this. These types of gift exchanges can keep costs down and can be a lot of fun. Humorous gifts are OK—but don't go overboard. Homemade gifts are also a good idea. If your workplace doesn't go in for the overall exchange plan, it's okay to give gifts to your closest office buddies. Just be discreet about doing so in order not to hurt others' feelings. Sometimes, exchanging gifts with a few is better done outside of work.

I just got laid off. Can I cut back my gift giving at the last minute?

Yes. Let people know (ahead of time if possible) that you won't be purchasing gifts this year. For those you still want to recognize, get creative with an inexpensive but meaningful gesture. You could plan to spend an afternoon in the park or build snowmen with your nieces and nephews instead of buying them the hot new toy. Send your parents, siblings, and close friends letters of appreciation for their special roles in your life. A homemade meal or batch of cookies is always a welcome gift—and a little easier on the pocketbook.

Five Points for Gift Giving Success

Here are some of our favorite tips for giving gifts without succumbing to stress.

  1. Get their wish list.
Ask people for hints or even a wish list. Gather ideas during the year, and write everything down.
  2. Trust your judgment.
Forget about being afraid the gift isn’t “perfect.” If you think the person will like it, chances are they will.
  3. Stick to your budget.
Spending more than you should takes the fun out of gift giving. There’s nothing more stressful than overspending—and feeling uneasy about it.
  4. Buy it when you see it.
If you’re shopping in July and see a sweater that your mother would love, buy it. It probably won’t be there when you look in December.
  5. Start a gift closet.
Stash a few gifts that will work in a pinch: copies of your favorite cookbook, a good bottle of wine, or boxes of beautiful note cards. That way you’ll be ready if need a gift on the spot.

Children's Cards

Introducing children's cards from Lydia & Pugs! I've been asked by a few people if I have designed children's cards with dogs. I originally offered a Little Girl Silhouette Card walking her pug, however, other dog owners wanted the variety other available dog breeds.

The first card above is my original illustration rendered in watercolor of a little girl walking her pug. However, now you have the choice of choosing any of my available dog breeds to be paired with the girl.

The second card is for those Holiday Thank-You notes you'll need to send out after Christmas. The little girl and pug have matching pink outfits complete with a holly berries and leaves.

Both card sets are listed on my shop. Enjoy!

Holiday Etiquette

Here's a few helpful tid-bits that might get you through the holidays, or at least the Thanksgiving holiday. I found this helpful advice from an old friend, Emily Post.

What if you don't want to give up your ingredients?

Q: I have a collection of great special-occasion recipes, and people are always asking me to share them. Is there a nice way to say no?

A: It might help your frame of mind to think of each request as a compliment. If there’s a recipe you truly don’t want to reveal, just say warmly, “I”m very flattered you like it. However, it’s been kept in the family so long that I’ve promised myself not to divulge it. I’m sure you understand.” You could then offer to give her a recipe that you like but don’t feel protective about.

Table Conversation

The art of dining includes several things: the table setting which brings order and beauty, the menu which delights the taste buds, and the conversation that brightens the day! The following tips will help your children learn the art of table conversation.

  • Talk to people on both sides of you and across the table.
  • Volume: Not too loud; not too soft.
  • Don’t talk with your mouth full! (If it’s a problem, try putting a mirror in front of your child during a meal, so she can see how it looks.)
  • The art of small talk: Suggest topics like the weather, sports, local events, school and then practice. Avoid questions that can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.” Instead use who, what, where, when, and how. Here are some practice questions. Help your kids make up their own:
    1. “What did you think of the ball game last night?”
    2. “What was the sledding like after that snow storm?”
    3. “I heard you won the state spelling bee last week! That is so cool…What comes next?”
    4. “Mom says you went to Spain last summer. Can you tell me about it?”
  • Avoid talking about personal family issues.

Practice at each meal this week. Who knows? Maybe you’ll learn something about your children you didn’t know. And, better yet, maybe they’ll learn something about you!

I've designed a few more Christmas Pug Silhouette Designs! Each apron is completely different and one-0f-a-kind!

Inspired by vintage apron design, each apron features a festive Christmas pooch! The dog applique is zig-zag stitched with red thread, adding extra durability.

Makes a perfect Christmas gift for a pug lover friend or yourself! If you would like a different dog breed silhouette, just ask!

This full apron will fit a lady that is a small to large size. The apron ties with pink straps 120 inches in length.
