Memorial Day weekend, Ly+Alan were lucky enough to have some family visit from the West Coast. Tons of fun was had by all - they hiked Shenandoah, explored Maymont Park, played games, had movie parties, and of course colored with the bath crayons. Ly especially enjoyed the fact that her nieces woke up with the sun, depriving her of her usual 9 am weekend wake up time...a fact that was only okay because they are very cute (see for yourself below). Alan, on the other hand was especially excited to have someone to toss in the air and carry around on his shoulders. They both had such a blast and can't wait to see them again in July.

Goodbyes
Sadly today Ly's dad flew back home to SD. Apparently 24 days with his daughter in the DC area are more than enough and no matter how much Ly attempted to bribe him (shoefly pie, scrapple, movies, game nights, etc.) he could not be persuaded to postpone his flight (again...once was enough)...something about missing his wife and wanting to sleep in his own bed. Anyway the Lees were very sad to see Rory go and are very grateful that he was here to help out with Ly's surgery.

Snowy Sunday in DC
After our awesome Saturday full of snow, Ly + Alan (and Ly's dad) decided to venture out of the house and visit downtown DC. A ton of fun was had by all, however for Ly one of the best parts was preparing to leave the house. First they needed to dig out their car out of the snow...and Ly enjoyed it so much she even helped the neighbors dig their cars out too. Ly's dad loved the snow too (obviously).

Here comes Santa Claus...
One of the highlights of Ly + Alan's Thanksgiving Extravaganza was the family Christmas party. We had our first ever white elephant gift exchange which turned out to be a blast...although perhaps next year we should make sure everyone brings gender generic gifts.
After the gift exchange we had a special visitor -- Santa! He made a special visit from the North Pole just to have everyone sit on his lap and tell him our wish. Ly wished for a visit to see the Pandas in China. Alan, of course wished for medical school acceptance letters. Here's hoping Santa can work his magic!

Hop E. Lee
Recently Ly has become rather obsessed with Canadian Geese. Alan thinks it is because they live close. About a week or so ago while Ly was driving to work she stumbled upon a nesting area of the Canadian geese. Ly was excited because there were a bunch of baby geese walking around. There were 2 families. One with little geese and one with slightly larger geese. Ly and Alan spent awhile watching the geese and then Ly discovered Hop.
It was love at first sight. Hop is a baby goose who has a messed up leg. It seems as if it is a birth defect and he always hangs back from his family and then hops to catch up to them. Luckily he is a good eater and isn't the smallest of the bunch. Ly consulted with her resident animal guru and he told her that Hop should be okay and be able to fly one day.
Ly desperately wants to keep Hop, but she doesn't want to deprive him of being with his family and she really does not have a place for him to live. So Ly has settled with visiting Hop once a day to check up on him...and so far he's doing splendidly. =)

Holiday 2008 Recap (a bit late!!)
Ly + Alan spent 2 glorious weeks in San Diego for the holidays. The weather was not as sunny as Ly had hoped - it rained on Christmas but let's face it, anything above freezing is a welcome change. Highlights of the trip, in no particular order, include:
Finding and decorating our 8 ft Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve. Lily managed to convince Alan to help her with her yearly duty of putting on the lights:
The Bolig girls got a little sidetracked with putting on the lights and decided to put on a variety show instead:
Christmas morning started bright and early (6:30 am) and was full of tons of gifts, Christmas cookies/sticky buns, and Jesus Christ Superstar:
Opening presents for a few hours is very tiring so Lily and Ly took a nap on the couch:
Hotel Del...where there was ice skating on the beach and a huge vintage themed Christmas tree...and a yummy fudge shop:
The whole fam spent a day at the beach where Ly learned more about her awesome cannon camera and how to use all the functions and Lily educated everyone about the ocean and the animals that live there:
Alan and Ly on the beach at sunset the day after Christmas...the beach is Ly's happy place:
Some other non-photographed memories include: spending hours adding new music to Ly's ipod, playing mahjong on New Years Eve, Mother-Daughter shopping trips, Going to the movies with the family (7 Pounds, Frost/Nixon, Slumdog Millionaire) and starting a family book club.
Hope your holidays were as family filled and relaxing.

Family History
Before Ly moved back east, she decided she wanted to go visit her mom's parents grave. She was excited because she had never seen it before and figured that she should while she had the chance. One morning, Ly and Alan trekked out to the Salt Lake cemetery with some of her family and they found the grave with no problems at all -- especially because they took the advice of wise Grandpa Grant who suggested that we ask the sexton for the location of the grave instead of wandering around for hours.
Ly is very grateful for the opportunity to go with Uncle Dick because she got to listen to all sorts of stories about Grandpa and Grandma Bart whom she didn't get a chance to know very well while they were alive. And of course it's fun to hear stories about when her mom was a kid too!
One of the things Ly has enjoyed about living in Salt Lake is the opportunity to see where her mom came from - where she went to high school, where she grew up, where she played, that sort of thing. It's important to know where someone comes from in order to really understand who they are and perhaps even their point of view on life. So even if the only good thing about her year and a half spent living in Utah is the fact that she can now understand her mom a little more, it was worth it.
