Trying Out Barre3

One of my 2014 goals is to be more fit. Nope, I don't want to lose any more weight! I've been curious with barre3 for the longest time, so last weekend I finally signed up for the Monthly Unlimited classes. I did this an hour before my second underarm diode laser treatment at SKIN Laser & Dermatology Center. Talk about hitting two birds with one stone, since both of the places I went to are just located inside The Spa Wellness in Shangri-La East Wing. I just love being here since the place smells so good all the time - like peppermint!

barre3 Studio inside The Spa Wellness, Shangri-La Mall

barre3 is the revolutionary workout that delivers the benefits of Pilates, Yoga, and ballet barre in one powerful 60-min class. Leveraged on the strength and sexy lines of Pilates, the wisdom and alignment technique of yoga, and the grace and efficiency of the ballet barre, it provides the ultimate head-to-toe workout designed to lengthen and lift the whole body. Because of this three-fold foundation, students experience their bodies transforming into one with the length of a dancer and the strength of an athlete.

barre3 is equally challenging to beginners and fitness buffs alike, appealing universally to men and women between 25- 35 years old who are up to the barre3 challenge.

The studio set-up has 3 corners of the wall with ballet barres which is essential in the work out together with yoga mats, yoga straps, dumbbells, and fit balls. The cork flooring that is both soft and sturdy protects the spine and joints during positions.

Benefits of barre3:
  • Builds longer, leaner muscles and a strong core.
  • Energizes and increases stamina.
  • Develops muscle balance leading to a well-proportioned body with less risk for injury.
  • Increases flexibility and creates a natural flow to the body.
  • Motivating group environment builds connections and community, both important in making exercise a regular part of life.
  • Connects mind, body and breath and relieves stress.

With Teacher Patty and my classmates at barre3 Shangri-La

barre3 has three class types that has different difficulty levels – advanced, foundations and open-level classes. Since it was my first time to try out this type of exercise, I went to the open-level class with Teacher Patty. She was friendly, encouraging, and yet her moves were also challenging but with a more zen approach. I was "first day of school" scared before the session. We used the ballet barre for support for certain poses, dumbells to tone the arms some more, and the fit ball for the legs and back. My legs shook involuntarily during some poses (like the plank), and I know I need more practice. I felt great afterwards, and got sore muscles on my body (most particularly my legs and abdominal muscles), but it's all good, since I know I worked it!

Just yesterday, I went back to class again for the second time! This time, I went to barre3 in Trinoma instead (which is just 10 minutes away from my office). My teacher this time was Karen; her style was more upbeat and fast-paced. I found myself to be less shaky today, hope it's a good thing! Also, the teaching style really varies. Yesterday's workout had minimal (or no) planking, thank God. Haha. My muscles were still achy from Saturday's lesson when I went to class yesterday, but I'm glad I went anyway. I feel much better now and I think my body is getting used to all the stretching. Seriously, barre is addictive. I hope to learn more about my body and find out where my strong points are. I also hope I'll be able to maintain this drive, and achieve a more fit and toned body. Gotta make the most out of my monthly unlimited sessions!

Class rates:
  • First-timer trial (3 classes in 2 weeks)      P1,500
  • Single Class                                            P700

Underarm Diode Laser at SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center [Update & Promo]

Remember my post about the first session of underarm diode laser treatment I had with SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center?

Well, here's an update. I was told by the dermatologist that within 2 weeks, my hair would shed. My hair still grew after the session, but after 1 week from the day of the treatment, my hair began to shed already. Like it comes off when you gently use your finger to pull it (effortlessly). I believe it doesn't totally come off from the root (like plucking), but it's more like the hair broke off since it's too weak already. (I could get used to that!) Regrowth was super slow, although after a month there was still sparse and fine regrowth. Between the interval of your treatments (usually 4 weeks), you may not pluck or wax. Trimming and shaving is okay.

So yesterday, I've finally purchased the remaining sessions I needed for the complete treatment! It helped a lot that SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center has a huge discount on their diode laser for the entire month of March. I'm so kuripot, but this one is so worth the splurge!

SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center inside The Spa Wellness, Shangri-La Mall

For the review of the treatment and procedure, you may refer to my previous post.

Promo:
  • 50% off on underarm and upper lip
  • 30% off on full arm, full leg, bikini, lower leg, half arm, beard, brazilian, and full back

Diode Laser Hair Removal is the gold standard for hair reduction that effectively lessens hair growth. For maximum results, 6 to 8 sessions are needed per body area. Promo period is from March 1-31, 2014.

You can buy as much sessions as you want, but you have to use the sessions up within the year. No hoarding, since the sessions aren't transferable either. After my second session, the dermatologist informed me that I only needed around 4 more sessions to complete the treatment. Hence, I only needed a total of 6 sessions for the full course of diode underarm laser. (This differs per client, depending on the amount of hair to be removed.) Upon purchasing, you will be handed a personal card for record keeping.

Since I was already done with my first last month, yesterday, I paid for 5 more sessions for just P10,000.00. I got to save P14,000, so I'm happy! I was almost willing to purchase the 6+2 sessions for P24,000.00 (at regular price), but I am really thankful for this promo. Now, I'm on my way to smooth, hair-free, and perfect underams! :D

I highly recommend SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center. All treatments are administered by Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) accredited dermatologists (and not nurses and/or trained therapists), so you know you're in safe hands. The treatment rooms are also well-lit, bright, clean, and non-intimidating. Also, you get a serving or 2 of The Spa's ginger tea (a favorite of mine).

Imagine, just P16,000.00 (8 sessions) or less for hair-free underarms. No need to shave, pluck, or wax forever! I'd take that any day.

Diode Laser at SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center

Getting my underarms lasered is something I've always wanted to do. What just holds me back from trying are the risks on my skin getting burned (when administered  improperly) and the high costs of the procedure.

Finally, I did it! I chose SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center inside The Spa Wellness in Shangri-La East Wing. I booked my appointment for last Saturday, and received a text last Friday night reminding me of my schedule.

Since it was my first time at SKIN, I filled out some forms before starting with the procedure. The lounge area was really nice and comfy, and I also got to enjoy a hot cup of ginger tea while waiting.

Treatment Room at SKIN

After less than 5 minutes, I was led to the treatment room. It looked really bright, clean, and pleasant - not intimidating at all!

On the left (beside the green leaves) lies a hidden cabinet where you can keep your things while the procedure is being done.

What I appreciate most about SKIN is that they have highly-trained skin doctors accredited by the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) who conduct consultations and administer procedures. It's not just the aestheticians or therapists who will be administering the laser, but an actual dermatologist, which means you are in good hands. Lasers are risky business, after all.

Diode Laser is the gold standard for hair reduction, setting new standards for efficacy, safety, and speed. Non-invasive with no down time. 6 to 8 sessions for optimal results.

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?

The hair pigment (i.e. color) absorbs the optical laser and radiofrequency energies, converting these energies into heat that permanently destroys or injures the hair follicle, thus making it unable to continue to grow hair. Because not all hair is in the growing phase at the same time, a series of treatments is necessary to achieve long-term hair reduction. Laser treatments are repeated every four to six weeks.

Source: http://ltlmedspa.com/Laser_Hair_Removal.html

The resident dermatologist of SKIN explained to me the state of the art equipment they use. Syneron elos Plus has 3 functions: Motif LHR, Sublative RF, and AC. Motif LHR is what they use for hair reduction, while the latter are more for acne concerns. She chose the setting Skin Type III for my skin, based on my skin tone.

Tip: Do not pluck or wax prior to getting diode laser done. Shaving is okay.

Diode laser attacks the hair follicle. If you pluck the hair out from the root, the laser won't be able to "sense" the hair in that area. If you just shave it, the root of the hair will still be visible, hence the laser could kill it - resulting to zero or just a few regrowth after a couple of sessions.

Before the treatment, in changed into a towel/robe. My underarms were shaved with a new, disposable razor and mapped (so the laser won't go beyond that point). After that, my underarms were iced with the yellow balloon for a few seconds, then a cooling gel was applied so the laser won't feel as hot or burn my skin. The 3 shades you see are meant to protect the eyes from the laser - one for me, one for the dermatologist, and one for the nurse.

The technique the dermatologist used on me was the less painful one wherein she covered a large area and went over it for several times. That technique is best for 1st timers like me. On my 4th or succeeding visits, she would use another technique that would enable more concentrated pulse movements - that one would feel like a rubber band snapping on my skin.

As for the pain, it was minimal. It's even less painful than waxing! Within 10 minutes, I was done with both underarms. The nurses iced, cleansed, and moisturized my skin. I was told to not touch or do anything to my underarms for 2 weeks, and that the regrowth would fall off on its own. (I can't wait to see that!)

Price:
  • P4,000 for 1 session
  • P24,000 for 6+2 sessions

My underarm diode laser experience at SKIN went well. If things do work out, I might consider getting the package (so I'll get to save some money). Will definitely let you know when I do! For now, feel free to Like SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center on Facebook for more information on their services.

The Spa Wellness Shangri-La Launch + Aromatherapy Massage

I so wish I could call The Spa Wellness my second home. Every time I step into their branch in Shangri-La East Wing, I am immediately transported into a secret garden of tranquility amidst the bustling business district of Mandaluyong City. I've already been here late last year for my Total Indulgence treatment, and now I am back again to witness its grand launch.

Each branch of The Spa Wellness has a unique theme, and their branch in Shangri-La East Wing houses the luxe and modern interpretation of the “Secret Garden”.

Upon stepping into The Spa Wellness, you'll be led by a distinct fragrance coupled with modern, earth-toned interiors. Then and there, you're no longer in the city - given the luxurious and tranquil ambiance The Spa Wellness provides.

Now on its 18th year, the company is no longer to be called a spa institution only. The Spa Wellness is a wellness haven offering luxury relaxation (The Spa) for a tranquil spirit, fitness (barre3) for a strong body, and beauty (SKIN dermatology & Laser Center) for radiance.

The Spa in Shangri-La East Wing is the second branch that carries all three house brands of The Spa Wellness.

While waiting for the program to start, the guests help themselves so light, sweet snacks and some tea.

When in The Spa Wellness, ginger tea is a must try!

The early birds, Donna & I

We went on a tour to see what The Spa Wellness has in store for us. Come and join me!

First stop: the barre3 studio.

The Spa Wellness has included its revolutionary exercise barre3 studio in its Shangri-la East Wing branch. With a capacity of 19 people, the barre3 studio allows guests to enjoy one powerful workout which combines the grace of the ballet barre, the wisdom of yoga, and the strength of Pilates. The barre3 studio in Shangri-la East Wing maintains the same quality, look, and feel as in other barre3 studios. barre3 is said to improve balance, increase flexibility, and enhance strength.

Next stop (and probably my favorite part of The Spa Wellness): The Spa.

Massages, body treatments, and facials and more can be enjoyed by guests at the comfort of private rooms.

The Spa in Shangri-la East Wing has premiere suites, which are the most luxurious among all types of accommodations, with facilities (jacuzzi, shower, and steam) inside your own private room.

Guests can also enjoy the Spa reflexology, which is a combination of 3 Asian techniques (Japanese Shiatsu, Thai Massage, and Chinese Reflexology), offered in select The Spa Wellness centers.

This room is perfect for sparties, don't you agree? The clean, modern, and earthly-toned interiors add to the distinct relaxing ambiance of The Spa.

Last stop: SKIN Dermatology and Laser Center.

Only in SKIN Dermatology and Laser Center can you find state-of-the-art dermatology machines, highly-trained skin doctors accredited by the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) who conduct consultations and administer procedures, and the luxury treatment to complete the total package.

Treatment Room

The interiors of the rooms in SKIN have a lively and light feel, and the guests can relax with a cup or two of the famous ginger tea as they wait for their appointment with their dermatologist in the plush lounge area.

After the tour, we had the chance to try out one of The Spa Welness' services. My pick was the Aromatherapy Massage, since I was nursing an achy back for two days. (How timely this treatment was!)

Aromatherapy blends elevate the classic Swedish massage into an experience that renews the spirit. Seek Balance, Energy, or Serenity. 60 mins.

Suite/Villa (60/90 minutes): Regular P1800/P2700, Member P1600/P2400

Trivia: If you see a flower on the suite's entrance, it means the room is occupied.

Each suite of The Spa has everything you need for the complete pampering experience.

Hair gel, talc, cotton buds, body lotion

Hair dryer

Shower caps, toothbrush and toothpaste, disposable underwear, hand soap

I was led to Suite 1, which was a couples room.

It was more spacious (with 2 beds) compared to the previous suite I've been to. Bath towels, bath robes, and boxer shorts are also provided.

Rainfall shower and steam room

Jacuzzi

Each guest is given a good 30 minutes to use the facilities in the room. Naturally, enjoyed a luxurious bubble bath at the jacuzzi. This was the perfect pre-massage treat, as the warm water soothed and prepped my muscles for the treatment ahead.

Complete the experience with a cup of ginger tea!

The technique used was the Swedish massage, a classic full body massage that works predominantly on the muscles, soft tissues, and joints, utilizing rhythmic strokes. The aromatherapy experience was enhanced with the lavender-orange oil my therapist, Mary Jeane, applied on my skin during the massage. It didn't help that my therapist was a pro with 14 years of experience at The Spa, so I was in total bliss. I told her that my back (near my nape) was sore and aching, so she concentrated the massage to where my tense muscles are. After the massage, my back felt a bit better. Would you believe that the next day, the pain was totally gone. It's amazing how a good massage can help the body recover from stress.

Every visit to The Spa merits a "so happy and relaxed" shot! Thank you for the super pampering experience, The Spa! ♥

Total Indulgence at The Spa Wellness, Shangri-La

I think there is no better way to reward yourself after a long day's work with a visit to The Spa Wellness. Just last Tuesday, clocked out at exactly 5:00:24 PM from the office and dropped by their newest branch in Shangri-La Mall East Wing for some mid-week "I so deserve this!" head-to-toe pampering experience. The treatment I had was Total Indulgence, which I believe is the same as the Here Comes The Bride package they had before. I like the present name better, since everyone (and not just brides-to-be) deserves such a pampering treat like this!

Hint: This left me in a chipper mood the entire week! :)

The Spa Wellness in Shangri-La Plaza East Wing is the 7th and newest branch. They also have one that will soon be opening at Greenhills Promenade.

The Spa Wellness in Shangri-La is home to The Spa, barre3 and SKIN Dermatology & Laser Center.

Each of their branches have different theme. I've been to their Trinoma branch before which is safari-inspired. The Shangri-La branch has a classy, modern touch with the clean lines and minimalist designs. This branch also has private suites for every client, similar to their other branches in Eastwood, Rockwell, The Fort, and Greenhills Promenade.

It was my first time to be in one of The Spa's suites. What makes this extra special is that everything you need and more, you can find inside the room. This means, no locker rooms (since you already have the room all to yourself) and no sharing of sauna/steam and shower stalls.

My personal vanity for the night

Another thing I love about The Spa is that you can come here without bringing anything but yourself (and money, of course!) since they have towels, robes, toiletries, and even disposable undies ready. Perfect for those impromptu times when you just feel like pampering yourself after the hectic holiday rush and Christmas shopping.

Candles to add to the dim, relaxing ambiance.

You can get your body scrubs, massages, and facials lying down on the comfy bed that is ever present in each treatment rooms.

There's also a private (rainfall) shower with a shampoo/conditioner and bath gel dispenser. This doubles as a steam room.

And my favorite part of the suite, the jacuzzi! Something I wish I had at home. :D

All set for the Total Indulgence!

Total Indulgence
For the ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation - 2h 30min to 3h 30min
choice of Signature Body Care* + choice of Facial** + Total Nail Care
Suite P4,750

*Signature Body Care:
Crystalline Skin Body Treatment
Toning Bamboo Revival
Coffee Rub
Red Wine Sparkler
Sea Salt Body Scrub

**Facial:
Restorative Water Lily Facial
Tuscan Fango Facial

I was contemplating on which Signature Body Treatment to try this time, since I've already tried (and loved!) the Crystalline Skin Body Treatment. My quest for the ultimate me-time got the best of me, so I decided to go for the same treatment since I so loved the silky smooth, baby skin feeling it once gave me. I swear, if there is one and only one treatment you wish to try from The Spa, this would have to be it!

I was told that the Total Indulgence treatment would last for 3 hours: 1 hour for the body scrub (30 minutes for the actual scrub, 30 minutes to use the facilities such as steam or jacuzzi), 1 hour for the massage, and 1 hour for the facial combined with the manicure and pedicure.

Let's start!

Whenever you book an appointment at The Spa, make it a point to come a few minutes earlier to prep yourself and freshen up with a quick shower.
Crystalline Skin Body Treatment
(90 minutes)
Works on both skin and soul to reveal a youthful, healthy glow. Brighten and smoothen with a premium-grade scrub of chamomile, rosemary, jojoba wax, aloe vera gel, and lemon. Calm the spirit with a soul-soothing full-body massage. Recommended bi-monthly treatment.

The Spa uses premium products for their treatments. The scrub was a welcome treat to my senses since it has such an uplifting and relaxing scent. I loved how the scrub managed to whisk away those dulling, dead skin cells while still being gentle on the skin. After rinsing off the scrub, my skin felt baby-soft once again! Dry patches were gone, and my body felt smooth and supple all over.

After the scrub and quick rinse, I headed towards the jacuzzi where it took my pampering to another level. It's my first time to have a bubble bath! Haha! :D

While relaxing in the jacuzzi, I had a cup of The Spa's signature ginger tea. After soaking in the tub for a few minutes, I freshened up again quickly in the shower to prepare for the massage.

Swedish
The flowing strokes of this classic combined with our special oil to soothe sore muscles, increase circulation, and relieve body tension.

I had the Swedish massage which felt sooo good. I'm not really big on massages, since I get ticklish, but I loved how relaxing this was. (Also, Swedish is a good one to try for first timers since it's light and won't cause you any muscle pain after.) I loved that the massage therapist covered all bases, literally from head to toe. My favorite part would have to be the back massage, also near the nape, where all my stressed muscles are concentrated since I am always in front of the computer, typing away at work (and even when I get home to blog). Any form of stress seems to just melt away when you get a blissful massage.
Restorative Water Lily Facial
(60 minutes)
Repairs aging, damaged, irritated skin with essences from the water lily, a flower with exceptional curative powers. Combined with hazel nut oil and vitamin E, this facial increases collagen synthesis to soothe, fight stress, target redness, and provide super hydration. Recommended bi-monthly treatment.

Let me tell you a secret. It's my first time to get a facial, ever. I am so scared of that word alone, since I've always been told that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - same goes for my skin. I don't have perfect skin but it's not bad, and I don't like really like the idea of others touching my face. (Arte, haha!) But like all first, it's something I had to face, and I'm glad it was with The Spa!

My first rule, which made me oblige with the treatment, was no pricking. (Yes, I'm scared of that word too.) After that, everything was fine. My face was cleansed, exfoliated, steamed, and treated to a cooling gel mask. It felt so refreshing on the skin. During the steam, I was so worried that my pores would all open up and say hello, but during the mask, I felt them saying goodbye. Haha! My face was also massaged and moisturized to seal every nourishing serum/cream that was applied on my skin. Although it felt a bit oily at first, it was nourishing at the same time. My skin felt so soft and smooth, and with a radiant glow! (Massages work wonders for blood circulation.) You'll see the result on my picture later! :D (Just a friendly reminder, you can't wet or wash your face for 4 hours after the facial, though.)

Another hint: After this facial, I was able to skip makeup (like face base) for the remaining 3 days of the week at work. I would just put sunscreen, conceal my dark circles, fill in my brows, and apply lip stain. No BB cream, no powder - just healthy, happy skin!

Total Nail Care (Manicure + Pedicure)

Last but not the least, was the Total Nail Care. This was done simultaneously as the facial. I didn't really have a hard time choosing which shade to use this time. I picked up the midnight blue one first, then some reds and pinks, but went back to my first pick. My hands are so dry with ragged cuticles. (Sorry to my manicurist! Hehe) She did a nice job of shaping my nails. Ragged cuticles are gone! I also loved how regal and mysterious this shade is!

NOTD: Dazzle Dry Nail Lacquer in Evening Song

I picked this shade because it reminded me of midnight. When you stare at it, the shimmers even look like stars in the night sky. (The shade name is so spot on!) This one dries to a semi-matte finish, so a clear, glossy top coat was used.

I had a grand time at The Spa. To say that I enjoyed the Total Indulgence is an understatement. This is the most pampering experience I've ever had.♥

The Spa makes it easy for us to give and share the gift of pampering to our loved ones with The Spa Wellness Gift Card. It's available in P500, P1000, P2000, and P5000 denominations, which you can use in all branches. Plus, you don't have to use the entire amount in one visit. If you can't think of a gift to give someone who already has everything, then this may just be the answer! :D
