How I Learned To Deal with Toddler Meltdowns and Tantrums!

I'm so totally addicted to SocialMoms,  If you haven't signed up with them yet, you absolutely have to!  You get to meet up with some real  "Super Star Bloggers" and some awesome information to help you if you are a blogger just starting out!!!!  I was over there today and this question was posted which got my brain pumping:
" Do you have advice for handling stress when your children throw a temper tantrum in public or around friends?"
God did this question hit a nerve with me!!  It brought me back to reality and made me realize how much I had to learn to become the, tantrum meltdown solving mom,  that I am today!

Hyperlexia

I haven't posted about Lucas in a few day. I've been busy doing our reviews and we went to the shore over the weekend.

Last year around Christmas time I won an overnight stay at Harrah's casino in Atlantic City. I was really nervous to use it because I was afraid of how Lucas would behave with all of the noises. Not to mention it just isn't a family friendly place! We'll the free night certificate was going to expire so we decided to use it. It was only one night.

Again, Lucas baffles us and my fears were completely wrong! He was a complete angel! He was so well behaved, jovial, just an all around pleasant little man to be around.

Right before we were leaving we took my older son Charlie up to use his tokens at the fun center. The pool was located right outside of that and then you can go onto the roof where they had outside games that the kids could play. Lucas was walking along and out of no where started saying "Off, Off, Off"! My husband started screaming at me and said "LOOK DOWN!" He was reading the words off, off, off, that they had on the shuffle board mat. He always seems to surprise us with things that he knows.

When I was talking with his therapists this week about what happened they seemed to pass the word Hyperlexia around so I looked into it.

Borrowed from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperlexia

Hyperlexic children are characterized by having average or above average IQs and word-reading ability well above what would be expected given their ages and IQs.  It can be viewed as a superability in which word recognition ability goes far above expected levels of skill. Some hyperlexics, however, have trouble understanding speech. Most or perhaps all children with hyperlexia lie on the autism spectrum. Between 5-10% of autistic children have been estimated to be hyperlexic.

Hyperlexic children are often fascinated by letters or numbers. They are extremely good at decoding language and thus often become very early readers. Some hyperlexic children learn to spell long words (such as elephant) before they are two years old and learn to read whole sentences before they turn three. An fMRI study of a single child showed that hyperlexia may be the neurological opposite of dyslexia. Whereas dyslexic children usually have poor word decoding abilities but average or above average reading comprehension skills, hyperlexic children excel at word decoding but often have poor reading comprehension abilities.

Hyperlexia was first named and scientifically described in 1967.

Developmental

Despite hyperlexic children's precocious reading ability, they may struggle to communicate. Often, hyperlexic children will have a precocious ability to read but will learn to speak only by rote and heavy repetition, and may also have difficulty learning the rules of language from examples or from trial and error, which may result in social problems. Their language may develop using echolalia, often repeating words and sentences. Often, the child has a large vocabulary and can identify many objects and pictures, but cannot put their language skills to good use. Spontaneous language is lacking and their pragmatic speech is delayed. Hyperlexic children often struggle with Who? What? Where? Why? and How? questions. Between the ages of 4 and 5 years old, many children make great strides in communicating.

The social skills of a child with hyperlexia often lag tremendously. Hyperlexic children often have far less interest in playing with other children than do their peers.

Lucas does seem to be obsessed with the alphabet!  He sings the alphabet song almost all day long!  His speech therapist actually told us last week that we should try to break him of it because of the repitition.   His speech is so delayed you can barely make out what he is saying but you can make out enough that he is saying the right letter.

I get so frustrated because he may do one thing with us but when he is with his therapist he just sits there and does nothing!  I know he is capable of doing things but when the demand is placed for him to do them. He sits there and stares at you and does nothing!  On his own he's singing the alphabet, counting, talking to himself,  yet as soon as someone gets in his little world to do it with him. He's DO DONE!  His way of saying ALL DONE!

Last day of school!

Good Morning all!

We have some really exciting reviews and giveaways coming up soon so keep your eyes out! Please check out the free offers and sales that I listed for today, we have some really good ones!

Today is the last day of school for my older son Charlie! Our whole dynamics in the house is going to change after today! We have yet another therapist starting next week for Lucas. That brings his total therapy for the week to 6 hours! Two behavior therapists two times per week each, one OT, and one speech for one hour per visit.

As Charlie's school year ends I can't help but think that in a few short months my little bug, Lucas will be going to school. I can't believe that at only 3 he will be starting his first day of school, getting on his own little bus : ( I know that he needs it desperately but it doesn't make it any easier to think about. Ok, I'm having panic attacks now so I'll stop thinking about it. LOL

Here is wishing that all of our members have a wonderful day!

A wonderful day in the neighborhood!

Sorry, I missed getting back to you all sooner but Lucas caught a stomach bug and we were up all night with a very cranky little man and cleaning up the workings of the bug! yuck!

Anyhoot!  We went to the Early Intervention fun day at the park and it was so nice.  VERY HOT, but very nice.  They had a lot of really wonderful people who volunteered to help set up all of these stations for the kids to play in.  They had tons of  hand outs with a lot of really good, useful information.  I am going to post the links for you in the resources tab as soon as I get a moment. I have some more pictures of Lucas at the park as well that will be in the pictures tab.  Lucas did really well with all of the activities. He always kept going right back to this basket of balls, he just loved it.  I'm going to have get him his very own to play with.

I can't say enough wonderful things about Early Intervention and every therapist that they have working with the kids.  They have a special gift and special way of connecting with every single one of these children some how.  I just can't understand how they give completely of themselves to these children and know that when they are three years old they have to set them free like little butterflies to go on their own.  It really takes a special kind of person to accept that to care for for these little caterpillars.

I'm sorting out the details/legalities now but hope to have his therapist post their expertise about Lucas's recovery for you get a better perspective of their view of his recovery.  I think it's so important to have something to look back on to show you how far your little one has come.  Those moments when they slip back and you feel like the last 6 months of therapy just went out the window.   Each step forward could be ten steps back, but then they jump eleven feet ahead.  It's a puzzle that you just can't wrap your fingers around.

What a journey this is!

My son Lucas is two and a half years old and we've been through a rough couple of years.

At 12 months, we took him to the pediatician to find out if he was deaf. We could bang a pot behind him and he wouldn't even flinch. Never made eye contact and just didn't act like a normal baby.

We were told he was autistic and to sign him up with early intervention while we waited to get him into his pediatic neurology appointment.

I was devastasted when EI told me that he had all of the red flags for autism. I always said to people that I spoke with who had special needs children that God only gave special children to special people and I was perplexed because I believed that God made a mistake with blessing me with Lucas because I was certainly not one of those special parents that could handle a child with special needs.

He finally saw the Neurologist and he was certain that Lucas did not have autism but thought he had ADHD. After many months of therapy the sensory issues reared their nasty little heads! Lucas would vomit if he touched play dough?! He couldn't touch his food or he would be thrown into a meltdown. He doesn't sleep, he doesn't listen when he is told to come hear, he won't sit with you, he is a bunny on the go 24 hours a day. All I can say is Lucas is an angel but he is exhausting.

I wanted to start this blog to share my journey and hopefully bring hope to other parents who are dealing with the same thing.
