Continuing the winter scene series, the Winter Village Post Office is the perfect snow-covered setting. From the pavilion outside, musicians fill the air with music, while children take in the wintry atmosphere by the park bench before throwing snowballs at each other – the musicians had better get ready to duck!

BrickFair 2011 Wrap-Up

Name of Event: BrickFair 2011
Found at: http://www.brickfair.com/ (note: link goes to upcoming event, click on "Other Events" on the top right to find information on BrickFair 2011 and other events.
Details: Here we are, nearly a week after surviving our third BrickFair. This was a low-key year, mostly because my own plans were made fairly last-minute. There were no LMOTD tile giveaways this year, and I brought fewer of my own creations that I've blogged - but it was still an intense weekend, thanks to all of the other things that were there to see. I'll be updating this over the next few weeks as I slowly get my feed reader back under control, but here's a partial round up of photos and coverage from the event. You can send your tips and photos in to legomodeloftheday@gmail.com.

HAK Utrine

Name of Model: HAK Utrine
Created by: gordangrguric
Found at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/49091484@N07/sets/72157624197803980/
Details: We first had a look at this model back at BrickMagic 2011 - where it easily won Best-in-Show. The unusual technique used makes the building mostly hollow. The walls are built with substantial sideways sections, allowing the model to more accurately reflect the look of the original. No detail was spared - door pulls and light fixtures are carefully recreated. Every 1x1 round plate in the roof garden is carefully arranged and attached in just the right place, and the inner atrium appears in perfect detail. Some careful BrickLink purchases got just the right colors and pieces to make every detail exact. Look closely at those doors on the top floor - fairly rare medium stone 6 x 6 tiles were used to ensure a clean, accurate, consistent look, unmarred by the more distinctive textures that 1 x 6 tiles or some combination of tiles would leave. Photos really don't capture all of the details of this model, but it's a masterpiece of architectural reproduction.

New Year's News 2011

Time for our regular New Year's day business.

Once again, Peeron.com has updated their LEGO set instructions database to make all sets released in a given year available - you can now use their database to look up instructions for kits released in 2007. Speaking of databases: Brickset has done their year-end round of improvements. Nothing major this time, but all certainly good things.

LEGO has also unveiled some new items for 2010, most of which should be available through Shop at Home. Some highlights:

Maersk Container Ship:

(#10155, $119.99 USD, 990 pieces)

The Maersk Container Ship kit has been reissued again. Conveniently, they've risen the price on this one enough to make it about even with what you'd pay to buy the original off of BrickLink or eBay. Still - it's a great kit and the only way you can get your hands on LEGO pieces in the rare color of Maersk blue without breaking the bank.

Collectible Minifigures Series 3:

(#8803, $2.99 USD, 1 randomly packed minifigure per bag)
Collectible Minifigures Series 3
are now out. You know the drill by now: Randomly packed exclusive minifigures for a low price, but with some characters being quite hard to find. The price has gone up this time around, but is still quite reasonable for minifigures with exclusive molds and prints.

Diagon Alley:

(#10217, $149.99 USD, 2025 pieces, 11 minifigs)

For my money, the most exciting thing here is the new Diagon Alley set in the Harry Potter line. It's similar to other recent kits, like the 2008 Town Plan set or the Medieval Market Village. On top of that, it's got a bunch of great new Harry Potter parts in it! Although LEGO had previously released 4723 Diagon Alley Shops, this new version definitely takes it up a bit in the best way possible.

This year's big new playtheme is Ninjago, which is a game based system that involves colorful ninjas defeating "bad guys" through the use of "spinjitzu". This is definitely set up for kids to play with, but there are some new or rereleased elements in here as well.

New Year's Eve, 2010

Name of Model: LEGO LUG Showcase Model for Rockefeller Center January 2011
Created by: notenoughbricks
Found at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/notenoughbricks/sets/72157625591250103/with/5311001736/
Details: It's hard to believe that 2010 is coming to an end. We've shared one model here for each of these past 365 days, and it looks like we're good to go for another year. I'm sure that most of my readers are familiar with the popular New Year's ritual of watching a large object dropped near a crowd in a large city - you may also be aware of the annual TV special that features the "ball" dropping in New York City's Times Square. Here we see the best part of that captured in LEGO form (sorry, Justin Bieber fans - most of us only tune in for the countdown). The "ball" here looks great, thanks to the mix of clear plates and translucent 1x1 round plates - apparently it's a variation on the design that Legohaulic provided instructions for. This model will be on display in the Rockefeller Center LEGO store for the month of January, 2011.
