Vintage European Farmhouse Finds...

Hi Friends ~ The snow continues to fall as I write this post. We have lived in the Seattle area for over 18 years and have never seen anything like this! The snow is so deep that it's a workout just to walk out to the chicken coop. Hats off to you who live in the midwest and endure heavy snow throughout the winter!

We now have about 16 - 18" of snow and it is incredibly beautiful. However, in our area, we don't have heavy snow equipment, so life as we know it comes to a grinding halt. My mom has said it's almost like a forced Sabbath rest for us all, and it does feel that way. Schools have been closed for several days as we have gotten wave after wave of snow storms. Even many restaurants and shops close. People hunker down and some who don't, we wish they would. (Most drivers here are not used to driving in these conditions!)

The highlights for us have been a late night family snow walk around our property with the dogs, taking in the beauty and fun of snow, and meeting up with my sister so that the cousins could sled together.

I thought I'd take this snow day to share with you some recent vintage farmhouse finds, including this zinc trough from Europe. I'll be taking many of these items (and more!) into our shop space inside of M&M Antiques in Monroe, Washington just as soon as the roads are cleared and the store is re-opened! In case you're not a Seattle local but still looking for a zinc trough, you can find them here.

DIY Grain Sack Pillows (And Where to Buy Grain Sacks)

If someone were to accuse me of being slightly obsessed with vintage European grain sacks... I'd say they were wrong.

I am totally obsessed.

And today, I am going to share all of my grain sack secrets and tips... like the best places to buy your grain sacks at the lowest price, how to make affordable grain sack pillows (sew and no-sew options), and if you're not up for making them yourself, where you can shop for a beautiful selection of grain sack pillows.

A Grain Sack Curtain...

The spring rains have returned, leaving us with a half-planted vegetable garden for now. ;) So, I thought I'd share a little indoor project!

We recently added a grain sack curtain underneath the kitchen sink. I used to have one made out of drop cloth, but love the added character the grain sacks bring...

I found the AMES grain sack at the Farm Chicks show last year. The other, simple striped grain sack, I purchased at a local antique shop. Both were about $20 each. That seems to be the going rate for vintage American grain sacks.

I once was very fortunate and found a few for $4 a piece... they were pretty dirty but washed up beautifully! I used them to cover these chairs.

European grain sacks can be much more expensive ($30 - $70 and higher),
depending on the condition and the graphics.

My "not-so-secret-weapon" Mom, made the grain sacks into a curtain. Since we opened them up, using both sides, we only needed two grain sacks for this project.

A simple white tension rod (Lowe's) holds the curtain in place.

So glad you stopped by...
Hope your day is going well!
