Independence Day party at the boys' school

There's no school on Monday or Tuesday, so the school celebrated today. Kids didn't have to wear uniforms. They wore clothes in the colors of the Mexican flag: red, white, and green. Here's James' class, all 12 of them. The kid in the middle in the Gap shirt is James' desk-mate, Santiago. James is convinced he's a genius. He reports that Santiago speaks English, German, and French and is working on Russian. And Joseph's class, all 21. His desk buddy is ALSO named Santiago. He's the one behind Joseph in the black shirt giving the thumbs up. The "mamis y papis" WhatsApp group for each grade was hopping in the past few days with messages about who was bringing which snacks for the parties. Thursday, I checked my during the 11 a.m. break in my Spanish class and I'd missed 58 messages. They had cookies, juice, tamales, churros, and spaghetti and I don't even know what else. Lisa's school

I took a week of classes at La Calle Spanish School. The good thing is that I learned some new words and maybe got better at the subjunctive. The disheartening thing is that I learned I'm at level B1 in Spanish. There are six internationally recognized language levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. According to one school website, learners can reach the B1 level with 17 weeks of study. I've been [trying to] speak Spanish for 35 years. Sigh. Anyway, here's the school cat, Chac or maybe Chaac. The Mayan Chac are the gods of rain, lightning, and thunder. The school Chac is the cat of sleeping and whining for food. Here's my instructor, Octavio. He's a photographer and Literature major who rides his road bike everywhere (a much, much braver thing than you realize, folks). His wife is a ballerina. He's lived all over Mexico. He's an interesting guy and he reminded me of a lot of the Mayan art we've seen in the museums.

Carlotta's and the Mall

There's a fancy restaurant around the corner from our house. We finally got dressed up and walked over there. The hot chocolate was pretty on point and the service was splendid, but the boys turned into kids when the familiar food they'd ordered -- pancakes and a roast beef sandwich -- didn't taste exactly like what they expected. Everybody from Joseph's 3rd grade class has been invited to a kid named Santiago's birthday party on Sunday, so we needed a gift. We went to the Lego store at the mall. The mall with an indoor ice skating rink with a zamboni.
