ArkansasConnection_coverWelcome, David. Please tell us a little bit about your book.
Frank Munro, manager of the New York Mets, leads a turbulent life trying to win with a team of dysfunctional underachievers. Soon after the Mets lose the final game of the season, Frank finds out his mother has died, and he must return to his hometown of Catsville, Arkansas, to arrange her funeral. His attempt to give her remains a grand send-off results in mayhem, and out of pity his mother’s friend Alice invites him to a "tea party” with three other ladies, where the tea is actually moonshine. Frank gives them a play-by-play of that final game, and manages to survive the evening. He returns to New York to find the Mets’ owner has decided to give him one more chance.

Meanwhile, Bobby Sherward, a doctor-turned-right fielder who sustained a concussion from the fly ball and lost the Mets' final season game, decides that his future is in medicine, not baseball. He takes a position at a veteran’s hospital in Arkansas. Upon arrival, he is amazed to find it's within spitting distance of Frank's hometown.

That’s not the only unsettling coincidence Bobby must contend with, for it soon becomes apparent that Broken Arrow Memorial is the medical equivalent of the Mets. Run by a psychotic medical director, the hospital is the home of indifferent or incompetent doctors, electro-convulsed patients, and assorted weird experiments.

Bobby soon has enough, but before he leaves town he encounters a remarkable sandlot baseball player named Jonathon Brown. Besides being a phenomenal player, Jonathon is also a mathematical genius who runs a highly successful investment group in the back room of a local diner.

Bobby manages to convince Jonathon to try out for the Mets, and his incredible skills both on the field and in finance bring him and the team fame and prosperity. But Jonathon also raises the ire of the brokerage firm losing customers to his sound investment advice. As a result, the company's CEO makes plans to “eliminate” the new competition. Will Jonathon survive his trip to the big league, and complete the Arkansas Connection?

PLEASE NOTE: There are some suggestive scenes and swearing in the book- so it’s not for children.

What inspired you to write this book?
I work as a pain consultant and have seen quite a few sports injuries and thought that I would like to write a novel considering I spend most of my time writing non-fiction. . The baseball parts involving the Mets are based on the fact that they really at one time were the laughing stock of the sport. The financial part is based on my innate distrust of bankers and stock brokers. The medical part, is based on my experiences somewhat exaggerated.

Excerpt from The Arkansas Connection:
The baseball season ended dramatically for Frank Munro, when he was ejected in the eighth inning of the final game of the regular schedule for saying unkind things about the first base umpire. At precisely the same time, Frank’s elderly mother, who happened to be watching the game in her home in Catsville, Arkansas, just as dramatically dropped dead from a heart attack in front of her television set.

Two days later Frank was airborne, heading south to attend his mother’s funeral. Frank hated flying, and the captain’s announcement that they would be running into a little turbulence only made him more nervous and depressed. His dark mood was not so much brought on by his mother’s death, which in many ways was a godsend, but by the fact that her funeral merely postponed his annual show-and-tell luncheon meeting with the team’s owner, Steve Conroy. Frank had been manager of the Mets for five years, and inevitably Steve would bring the meeting to an end by making the same demand: “Frank, give me one fucking reason why I shouldn’t fire you.” And Frank would just as inevitably answer that he didn’t have one.
This year was even more critical, because the team had managed to pull off one of its worst seasons since Steve had bought the club ten years previously. To make matters worse, the final game against the Giants would probably go down as one of the greatest debacles in the history of baseball.

Frank stared morosely into what was left of his third Scotch, and pondered the fate that had led him into managing such a bunch of dysfunctional, psychotic underachievers. The problem wasn’t that they lacked talent, but that most of their energy seemed to be directed toward their extracurricular activities – drinking, self-medicating with dope, beating up their wives and girlfriends, fighting in bars, and generally whoring around. Baseball just seemed to give them something to do between all the other stuff.

After landing in Dallas, Frank took a white-knuckle hedgehopper to Broken Arrow and rented a car for the last leg of the trip to Catsville. The airplane food and multiple Scotches had left him with heartburn and a major hangover, but he still felt a pang of unfamiliar nostalgia as he drove the eight miles down the road to his hometown. Besides being the home of Potter Plastics, the biggest employer and polluter in the county, Catsville was also a major trading center for the vintage moonshine liquor that was distilled in the pine forests surrounding the town. If you looked carefully as you drove down the winding road into the valley, you might see wisps of black smoke sneaking through the trees, indicating that there would soon be new product hitting the market.

For Frank right now, Catsville was a retreat where he thought he could relax, say a final good-bye to his mother, and hide for a couple of weeks from the New York media, which was vicious in its criticism of his handling of the team. Apart from the usual carping that he should never have been hired in the first place, there were more serious charges that cast aspersions on his birthright and sexual proclivities. One caller to a radio talk show, mixing him up with a serial killer of the same name, suggested he should have his testicles cut off and stuffed down his throat.

What exciting story are you working on next?
Actually I’m working on another novel, but this one will be a little closer to my area of expertise one set in the medical field. Not sure exactly what is happening with it but I’m interested to see what I arrive at!

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I’ve never sat down and made any declaration that I’m a writer. People write all the time whether it’s a simple report for work or articles for journals. In the medical field your whole life revolves around paperwork of some kind and since part of that profession is publication in medical journals I just did it. I’ve never really thought about whether I was a writer or not. I think sometimes that too much attention is paid to labeling people and not enough to what they are producing. I am who I am and if that also includes being a writer then that’s great.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
No, I’m a full time doctor (specialty in Anesthesiology) and I work with patients who have all types of chronic, intractable non-cancer pain. Most people I see have had pain for many months or years and have often seen many care givers. I work and treat them through many different means. So I find that writing is a good way to unwind at the end of the day, and that’s generally when I write.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I don’t know that I have one. Unless a quirk is to sit down and just write. Some people find it difficult to sit down in front of a blank piece of paper. I’ve never had that problem so maybe that’s a quirk.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I think I was a typical kid growing up, but back then ( I’m in my 70’s) you either went to school and then later found your vocation or you ended up doing basic jobs. I always had a love of learning and helping people so I went the doctor route. Little did I know how much time you had to devote to your studies, but it was an area that I’ve always loved.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
I think that it’s good to remember that you can achieve what you want to no matter what age you are. I didn’t think to start writing a novel until I was in my 70’s and that’s okay. If you want to do it you will. Don’t let other people make it seem like you are running out of time, you aren’t. It’s even easier to publish now that you can take advantage of e-book technology, so take your time and do a good job.

Thanks, David!

Excerpt:

Jorr had never seen snow before. It wasn't the kind of weather that Elves traditionally preferred, and so they had little to do with snow.
Stepping shakily out of his boat, Jorr's foot sank deep into a mass of the damp substance. If the wetness of the sea couldn't get through his oiled leather boots, he knew this snow would fare no better. Still, the cold was unpleasant.
He stood and stretched, satisfied that he could do so after three long days on the sea. He looked out over the vastness of icy, dark gray water he had just crossed and frowned. It had taken so long, it was hard to believe that he had sailed across the narrowest part. Crossing that water again was not something to look forward to.
Then another thought - depending on what he found here, maybe he wouldn't have to?
In any event, he was here now. He still had a good distance to travel if the maps were correct.
Jorr grasped the side of the small boat that had been his home for the past three days and pulled it completely onto the shore.
The snow had stopped falling, yet there was plenty of it already on the ground here. The day was overcast, but was beginning to get darker, and the wind wasn't helping with cold or visibility. Waves of snow dust were washing over him. He pulled the hood of his cloak over his bald head. He had waited too late. The hood had collected snow inside of it, and now it fell down past the side of his face and down his neck.
What a vile substance!
He resigned himself to the sensation, then looked around some more. The snow-covered beach was stark white, contrasted with a row of dark, dead trees a short distance away.
A very lonely place.
Jorr dragged the boat through the snow up towards the trees. He was so tired, but he had to get to those trees and start a fire, or he might fall asleep and freeze to death.
If that happened, the hope of the Elven people would die with him.
Grasping the small pouch he carried reminded him of how painfully little food he had been able to bring. The Elves had little enough at all in these dark times, and Jorr had hidden away as much as he could before his trip. It was not mucht. He had hoped for a bountiful forest where he could hunt, but as the island had grown into view bit by bit he had realized the forest was dead.
Just as the Elders had said it would be.
They were right about this, but that didn't mean they were right about everything. In Jorr's opinion, the Elders were wrong about most everything, and were not relevant any longer. Only a little time left, and they would see that he was right. Although he was but fifty years of age, and considered a child, he felt he was the one seeing reality, while the Elders were content to meekly accept their fate.
Shivering, Jorr realized that he was standing around freezing instead of building his fire.
Leaving his boat by the forest edge, he made his way through the trees and found what he considered to be an acceptable spot to make a fire. There was a row of trees grown tightly enough together to block much of the wind and the snow, so beside them the ground was only lightly covered.
Jorr opened his pack and withdrew the Fire Element.
The dull red rock glowed warm in his hands. Powerful guilt came over him. Although snow was new to him, the Elven people were no strangers to cold. They lived in a land that was nearly all desert, and the nights were as mercilessly cold as the days were hot. It seemed every night you would wish for the same burning sun that you cursed during the day.
Fire Elements were precious. They represented the last vestiges of magic the Elves still possessed. Supposedly they were used as children's fireworks back in the Before-Times, but now the few they had left were critical to surviving the cold nights of the ShirraLand Expanse where the Elves resided.
All Elves were now taught to make a fire as soon as they could hold a stick, so Jorr knew he could make one from the wood in these dead trees if necessary, but he couldn't take the chance that there would be no forest here. He had to be sure he could survive his journey, so he had stolen one of the Fire Elements the night he left.
It would all be worth it. He did this not for himself, but for all the Elven people.

Excerpt:

What's Underneath the Water....

One of the names that Cochran had used to make claims against Irish insurance companies was John Martin. Snow checked with the Births/Deaths and Marriages office in Dublin for this name, and was told that John Martin was born in 1976 and had died shortly after. Snow immediately referred the case to the Irish Police speciality fraud unit, the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation, and was able to present the police authorities with a comprehensive file.

Further investigation revealed that Cochran had obtained multiple Irish passports using the identities of deceased infants. Insurance policies had been issued to these names, followed by personal injury insurance claims. Cochran also had opened bank accounts, set up email addresses, and was using mobile phones in the names of these various stolen identities.
A Happy Ending
As a result of the investigation, Cochran was arrested at the Dublin airport in January 2011 while attempting to board a flight to Poland. When arrested, he was in possession of a child's death certificate and a completed official Irish passport application form. Cochran was convicted of these offences and is serving a prison sentence of four years.
Snow expressed his thanks to all involved. "Following his arrest and conviction, Jeremy Cochran is currently serving his sentence in an Irish prison. This was thanks to the efforts and cooperation of the SIU teams, the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation, the Irish Passport Office, International Association of Special Investigation Units, the district attorney's office in Durant, Okla., the sheriff 's department in Texas, the Durango Police Department and others."
Snow also gave a special thanks to the Irish charity "A Little Lifetime" (www.alittlelifetime.ie), which provided support to the bereaved parents of the infants, whose identities were misused by Cochran.
Epilogue
In May 2012, the charity "A Little Lifetime," took the opportunity of providing Snow and two detectives from the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation with an award for their efforts in the "detection and prevention of past Irish babies being used for identity theft and insurance fraud."
In April 2013 David Snow, will be presented with the Financial Investigator of the Year Award 2013 in Cyprus, by the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators EMEA (www.iafci.org)

David has since written a book, “Someone has taken my place” which is a novel based on the case and is available at www.davidsnow.ie or Amazon. A percentage of the sale of the book is being passed to the Irish charity A Little Lifetime.

Interview with children's author Lakshmi Gosyne

Today, I have an interview with the author of Waiting for Dad: A Yoga Story for KidsLakshmi Gosyne.

Bio:
Lakshmi Gosyne is an author, illustrator and designer. She worked with John Wiley and Sons, Canada as a graphic designer before working full-time with children and getting her master's degree in Education.

Her 15 years of experience with children and teaching as well as her love for yoga converged into two Yoga for Kids books: A Jungle Walk and Waiting for Dad.

In fact, Jungle Walk was originally a yoga workshop for children in Child Care Centers.

Lakshmi is an avid traveler and has lived in Trinidad and Tobago, Toronto, Canada, New Zealand, and Thailand. She currently lives in Koh Samui, Thailand with her husband Jonathan.

Welcome, Lakshmi. Please tell us about your current release.
Waiting for Dad is about a boy named Rob waiting for his dad, who is really late. He starts using his imagination to think about where his father could be. The ideas become more and more imaginative until finally Rob’s father arrives and we find out that maybe Rob was on to something.

What inspired you to write this book?
As a teacher, it’s always been a bit harder to get boys to read. When I wrote my first book: Jungle Walk, I had a girl as the main character. I wanted a book that boys could relate to, become excited about and look forward to the yoga too. That’s where Waiting for Dad came in. It was a book that boys could relate to and that they would be interested in “acting out” through yoga poses.

Excerpt:

What exciting story are you working on next?
I’m working on a children’s picture book where the theme is moving to a new country. More and more immigrants are arriving in the U.S.A. and Canada as children and I wanted to write a book that looked at moving countries from a child’s perspective. No yoga in this new one though.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I first considered myself a writer when I attended my first Writers’ conference in New Zealand. Up until then, although I had been writing, I never thought of myself as a writer. I suddenly had an opportunity to pitch one of my stories, exchange information and ideas with prominent Children’s Writers in New Zealand and become involved in a few writers’ groups.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
Although I’d love to write full-time, I still need to pay the bills. My graphic design and illustrations is where I get the majority of my income from. I would love to make a living wage through my writing eventually.

I work from home and my days are flexible so I always have a few hours a week of uninterrupted time to write. I don’t have any children or pets yet, but I run my own business so things can get a bit difficult. Also, being in front of the computer all day really puts me off writing on the computer, so I often start with ideas and outlining on pen and paper before doing the “work” of typing out the first draft.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I am very particular about what music I’m listening to when I’m writing. When I’m thinking it’s Mozart. When I’m outlining it’s often in silence. Only when I’m typing up do I let my husband play his favorite Rihanna CD and sometimes even then, when I get stuck, will I go outside or to the beach.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
This one is quite embarrassing! I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up. I think my dad took me to too many sci-fi movies when I was young. I love the idea of being a pioneer and learning new technology.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
I’m heading to North America (Canada and the US) from Thailand (where I currently live) in October. Lots of happy events: my sister’s having a baby and my cousin is getting married. I’m excited to be coming home!

Ways to connect:

Thanks, Lakshmi!

Graduating from college is easy when compared to the effort of getting hired after graduation. Once hired, maintaining your professionalism and managing your finances can be challenging. Journey after School seeks to provide guidance for new graduates. Like the syllabus provided by a professor at the beginning of a semester, Journey after School is a brief, easy read.

Excerpt:
You’ve proven you have the skills, experience, and personality to join the company. From the first day on the job, you have to perform and do it professionally. For young professionals, a challenge will be proving that you are capable of performing the job. You are no longer in college and should not give your colleagues the impression that you are a student.

Appearances are important, and just like at your interview, you should wear appropriate attire to work. The business attire you wore to the interview may not be required for your office; therefore, it is important to ask your recruiter or hiring manager about the dress code. As you begin working, you can observe your colleagues and determine how formal or casual they dress.

In school, classes had a defined schedule, but in your career, you may not have a specific schedule. Many employers expect that you will be at work at a reasonable time and do all of your hours for the day. If you have the luxury of choosing your own schedule, be mindful of your company’s core business hours. Typically, the core hours are defined between a start and finish time like 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If your schedule is predefined, be sure you are punctual.

You are not expected to work non-stop when you arrive at work, but you should minimize your downtime. When you are away from your workstation for an extended period of time, you should inform someone that you will be away. Your colleagues should not have to search for you and should never question whether you have actually worked all of your scheduled hours.

About Jamie White

JamieBMusings is a music addict, book lover, pet servant & NaNoWriMo survivor. When she's not busy writing posts for CultureShock, she's taking pictures for her new obsession (That Photo Blog) and spending time with her husband and pets.

Her first book, The Life and Times of No One in Particular, was released in May.

P Bialois’ love of words began as a small child when his father bought a stack of comics to teach him the reading skills he wasn’t mastering in class. Before long, he was reading at an advanced level and teachers were shaking their heads over the unconventional method.
Growing up in the ‘80s, Bialois was exposed to even further inspiration through the popular cartoons of the day. Transformers, in particular, sparked his imagination and led to him put his first stories on paper. After a decades-long break, Bialois began getting back into the world of writing by joining some role-playing groups. These groups taught him about fleshing out characters and building worlds that stuck with him as he began writing short stories for fun.
To his surprise, Bialois would end up completing his first full-length novel, Call of Poseidon, in 2007. Armed with a finished product, Bialois began working on another book, The Sword and the Flame, unsure of what he would ultimately be doing with either. As with many others in the later part of the first decade of the 2000’s, he found himself out of work and looking into new options. Over the next two years, he would spend most days at the library, completing an additional half-dozen works.
Two books later, Bialois is planning for the release of many more and enjoying the feedback he receives. The up-and-coming author takes inspiration from favorites such as Steven King, Tom Clancy and Sue Grafton. His love of history, fantasy and old monster movies has also served as a muse.
When he’s not busy writer or chatting on his social networks, Bialois enjoys watching Hockey and Football as well as Metallica DVDs. He currently lives with his wife- a fellow writer- and their fur children. CP Bialois is also active in several South Florida writing groups, as well as the online writer community.

Kindred Excerpt:

A thought came into my head and I turned, pinning Rafael with a please don’t mess with me right now…or I’ll rip your heart out stare. I said, “When we first met, you said we knew one another that you were with me when I was little, that we’ve always known one another…always…l-l-oved one another…” I quickly tuned out the others in the room, not wishing to focus on the reactions of the others…although I did catch the big smile from Elin; an incurable romantic it seemed. I knew this should have been a private conversation, but deep down I felt Rafael knew what was happening; I wanted to know what he knew…

He looked at me, with one of those intense, smoldering I’m a hot guy, and I really know what this look is doing to you stare…but I wasn’t going to allow it to affect me. I simply held his gaze in a stable, strong manner…and hoped I didn’t look like a deer in the headlights… he sighed and said, “Do you really want to talk about this here?” Rafael looked at me intently, leaning forward, resting his forearms on his knees…hands pressed together in the steeple formation that everyone uses to signify they are deep in thought.

I said quietly, “Yes.” He looked at me again, and I swear, if he didn’t stop looking at me that way, I would completely forget what we were talking about. He stood up, and crossed the room and came to stand in front of me—did I happen to mention how close he was? Well, enough that I felt a little uncomfortable, but I wouldn’t step back, and I refocused. I needed to hear what he had to say.

I knew you because I am ThunderKin; yes, I knew who you were and what this meant in the war coming Samhain…”

Okay,” I said trying to digest that here stood one of the legendary Thunderbirds…I saw how his eyes glowed, now appearing that unearthly golden hue; a worried expression passed over his features, and I wondered what worried him. I said, “And the rest about knowing me?”

I knew you because…” he said as he reached out, placed his hand on the side of my face, and leaned in close, lips almost touching. He whispered, “I knew you because you are my destiny…my mate.”

Really can you believe this?

Beware the muse with a chip on her shoulder.
Muses are often called uncooperative, grumpy, lazy beings who abandon a writer when they're needed most. Now, one of them has decided to tell their side of the story. Meet Clarissa, a muse who has spent centuries trying to inspire artists who sometimes are too stubborn to listen to her.
What is your muse trying to say to you? Clarissa might just be able to answer that...

The Life and Times of Noone Inparticular Excerpt:

So why do they happen? Like I said, some people are not opening up to their muses so they can’t hear the messages we’re trying so hard to get through. They are some that are tuning out because it’s just easier to take someone else’s work and modify it. Others aren’t doing it because they’re afraid of falling flat on their faces. With a proven name, you’re
guaranteed an audience. What if you do an original movie, show or song and no one likes it? I’ve heard it all a hundred times. Some of the most high-strung people I have ever met in all my years of doing this were entertainment executives. It’s like they’re afraid to be human or to have the actors and musicians they hire do the same. I gave up on them years ago. They always take the safest route possible. The safest route might make it easier to get rich quick, but it’s usuallythe most creatively boring.

Fear hampers the creative process and makes it harder for us to get through to our charges. That’s the one most important piece of advice you need most, take it from a muse- relax. Art doesn’t just inspire or teach here and there; it’s supposed to be fun, too!

Skeleton Key Excerpt:

Camping 101 excerpt

The one that comes to mind is about a family that went camping one summer, not too long ago. They settled in by their fire, much as we’re doing now, huddled together and sharing blankets. The night was clear and you could see all of the stars.” He motioned to the cloudless sky and stars, which could still be seen despite the fire. “The same as tonight.”

Unknown to the family, there was a secret military facility at the base of the mountain where they were experimenting on volunteers. The men that volunteered did so to help their country, but what was done to them…” He trailed off, shaking his head before continuing. “Is beyond description. Earlier that night they managed to escape, killing a handful of guards before escaping into the woods. Just as the family settled in for the night, the bushes around them rustled and the seven men burst out and seized the family.”

Did they kill ‘em?” Jason’s eyes were wide as were the rest in the group. Lester knew he had them right where he wanted them.

Slowly, Lester nodded. “They tore the people apart with their bare hands and began to eat them. That was how the men were found an hour later, sleeping with full stomachs and dried blood coating their faces, hands, and chests.”

What happened to the men?” This time Eric spoke, his face was the only one of the group that hadn’t gone pale.

Lester sat back and let out a deep breath, his hand dropped to the machete propped next to him against the tree. “They took the six of them back to the compound where they still are as far as anyone knows. The incident was covered up and blamed on a hitchhiker, turned serial killer.”

Scratches Excerpt

Lee nodded, "Exactly, here I thought I had found paradise. But then I guess no matter where you find it, paradise has to have a serpent."

Elias looked at him with a worried look. Thoughts of Slasher films danced through his head. "Is there something wrong here, Lee?"

Lee shrugged, "Dunno, depends on whether you believe all them ghost stories. People always come up here lookin' fer the ghost of the little girl, but they never find her."

Meredith felt a little chill go through her. "A little girl's ghost?"

Lee nodded and puffed on his pipe some more. "That's right. A little girl supposedly heard scratching at her bedroom window one night and opened it. Next day she was found dead by her brother. No one knew what to think or believe. There was no signs of struggle, no sign of what happened besides deep scratch marks on her windowsill. Since then, some say her ghost can be seen by the lake, but those that see her don't live to tell about it."

Meredith remained quiet for a moment. Her own mind was thinking of the stories of missing children in the paper on a daily basis. "Do you believe those stories?"

Lee stayed quiet for a few seconds before shaking his head. "Nah, for the simple fact that how's anyone to know you died if you see her, if no one's lived to tell about it? Nothing more than campfire stories, if you ask me."
