Budapest, Hungary
Reuters reports that a bomb thrown at Rwanda's genocide museum killed a policeman. This came during the week of mourning marking the 14th anniversary of the genocide. The Hutus apparently resent the week because it focus attention on their misdeeds.
As William Faulkner said: "The past isn't dead. It isn't even passed." That has been a leitmotif of this past week here in Poland and Hungary with the Wexner Foundation alumni group and it is the essence of this terrible event.

Rwanda Genocide Denial: Conference in Montreal a Bust
Apparently the Rwanda genocide denial conference which Cynthia McKinney was supposed to attend was overwhelmed by those who opposed the deniers agenda. Does anyone know if she went?

Rwanda: A Meeting in Montreal Dedicated to Rwanda Genocide Denial... Is Cynthia McKinney Going to be There??
As someone who teaches about the Holocaust and, of course, Holocaust denial, any form of genocide denial infuriates me. The meeting of Rwanda genocide deniers which is scheduled for Montreal is an outrage. Read about it here
This is something that causes great pain to Rwandese survivors and damage to historical accuracy.
I would be upset about it in any case. But, as I noted in a previous post, according to reports my former Representative, Cynthia McKinney is supposed to be there. Those of us who had the dubious privilege of watching her operate up close and personal have no great respect for her.
[I could probably have left out the word great in the preceding sentence and been even more accurate. And I could probably have left out probably in the preceding sentence and been equally so.]
I am not sure what can be done but anyone who is concerned about the history of the Holocaust should add their name to this petition. If you are someone who has been directly touched by the Holocaust, please note that in the appropriate place
As soon as I finish this post I plan to do so.
If only there was more we could do. If the image above does not move you because it seems so impersonal, then I hope the one to the left of a survivor will do so.
I hope Canadians will express their outrage.
At the least let's embarrass McKinney out of appearing... Though, based on her record, methinks she does not embarrass easily.... if at all.

Rwanda: Cynthia McKinney engages in this form of genocide denial -
Seems that former Congress member, Cynthia McKinney has made common cause with Rwanda genocide deniers. People in this district have had nothing but contempt for her [she used to represent it].
What makes this interesting is that McKinney used to condemn the Rwanda genocide. Wonder why she changed side. I have my suspicions....

CORRECTION: Rwanda Genocide Denial Panel
The panel at Emory on Rwanda genocide denial will be on NOVEMBER 27th, not January 27 as I mistakingly said in an earlier post

Rwanda: A new form of genocide denial
Corrected on November 20th:
On November 27th there will be a panel at Emory University regarding Rwanda genocide denial. These deniers cannot, of course, deny that the killings took place but they try to depict them as the "normal" course of business in Rwanda.
The mantra of these deniers is: Tutsis have been killing Hutus for years. This was an example of the Hutus striking back.
Other than simply being incorrect, this mantra essentially blames the victims for their own brutal deaths. What will surprise most readers of this blog -- it certainly surprised me -- is that one of the people who has been most active in spreading this form of denial is Paul Rusesabagina.
If his name does not ring a bell, think Hotel Rwanda. He is the central character. He is speaking on college campuses, including Emory and serious scholars in many fields are deeply worried. At Emory these scholars include people who worked in Rwanda for years prior to the genocide and who witnessed the horrors up close.
This is not simply a matter of historical revisionism but also an attempt to destabilize the current government of Rwanda which has, apparently, made tremendous strides in creating stability and reinvigorating the economy.
On November 27th there will be a high powered panel to address this issue:
