I made a cake last night. A chocolate cake.
There haven't been too many cakes around here the last year, but I made one for Sarah's ward bookclub last night as her bishop's wife also has Celiac Disease. I brought home the leftover's, put some wrap on top to keep it moist and set it on the kitchen counter.
This morning, as I'm getting ready to go volunteer, I hear Sammy downstairs asking me if I made a cake. I told him yes and he yelled, "Henry's getting into it!"
Confused, because Henry is a little thing, but can manage mischief if something is close to the edge of the counter and he stands on his tippie toes, I yelled back, "Push the cake towards the wall!"
"But, he's on the white chair!"
Please no.
He is so smart. So smart that he doesn't need to talk yet. So smart that he doesn't need to ask for a piece of cake. No "Cake?" or even "Ake?"
Why ask, when you can get it yourself?
At 9:30 in the morning?
But don't forget to get a spoon from the drawer first.
I suppose I should feel proud. He's just like his mama. Chocolate cake in the morning.
I don't even know how he knew it was there.
Super sonic smell, or something.
Updated to add that after I took this picture, I pushed the cake towards the wall and put the chair up on the counter as well.
I heard the crash. I gave it a few minutes to test my theory.
He was back. On the chair. And had used another spoon to hook the plate with the cake and pull it towards him.
Help.
Me.

How cute is he!!!
Looks like so much to my little one ! :-)
I can understand how it must be difficult to resist to a chocolate cake.
Apparently brilliance comes with a price that you have to pay! Mya is like this- crafty with the chairs and other things to reach the higher ups. The spoon though, at least you can say he has manners.
My little guy sniffs everything out also. Now matter how far pushed back. Those counters just aren't deep enough.
I'm sorry to tell you that there is nothing you can do, especially at this age when he can't be reasoned with. Even the top of the frig won't stop my super-determined, independent monkeys.
I love that my kids are independent but as they get older I find it harder to know where the line should be drawn between the things that should require permission first and things that I think they should be able to do without having to ask.
I could go on and on about this one...
I am laughing my crazy head off because I have 3 boys who have pulled this SAME KIND OF CRUD!! :P
I hope that one or both of you survive.... :)
Oh my goodness. Hilarious! I'm sorry, but since I don't have kids, it's really, really funny. I know I'll be eating those words some day, but not today!
What a funny post, Lucy! You tell a story like no other.
Oh what a cute face!!!!!!!!
What a determined little guy! So funny, but not really, but really it is:) Have a good day.
Oh Henry... you are my kind of kid! I love anything chocolate for breakfast, it really gets the juices flowing! He is so adorable, were his brothers even tempted to join in the raid?
Mmm, cake for breakfast! What a sneaky little smartie pants. :)
I'm so happy Amber posted a link to your blog - you're a hoot!
oh too cute! love the chocolate face!!!!!
I hope you indulged in that cake too!
Let's arrange a marriage between your son and my daughter. They can be each other's penance. Maybe if you put your baked goods in a wall safe from now on...?
Just as you are phasing into the busy stage - Sean is slowly starting to phase out!!!!! It does happen!
What a cutie though! I'm pleased that someone else is highly motivated by chocolate.
I swear these little boys deserve phd's. I mean they don't even need to talk and just look at all he could do. Sorry about your cake. He is DANG cute though :)
But the spoon! He's so mischevious and mannerly. What guy. You are in all kinds of trouble.
He seems so innocent, who new he was so crafty. At least those manners are sinking in, (he wasn't eating with his fingers).
He's the cute and silent type. I feel your pain oh so well. But I agree with Lara, they do grow out of it and they are the best kids when they do. The other night I told the kids to go downstairs and clean up. They interpreted that to mean go downstairs and watch tv, except for Lily. She came and got me after a few minutes and her room was SPOTLESS. She's going to make up for all the messes she's made over the years.
Cute pictures. Bring your recipe for the chocolate cake --and other successes. Also a bag of coconut. I forgot to put it on Sarah's list.
I just had pie for breakfast, myself!
Time to pass out the forks and share!
Hi, I have been a lurker for a long time, never knowing when the right time was to comment. Today I just couldn't resist. By the the way I found you through Tara. I also have three boys and I think my Taylor is close to your Henry in age. I just laughed so hard when I read this post because I can see Taylor trying something out like that. But to get a spoon first that is genius!!
The resourcefulness of toddlers is truly impressive. It appears the chocolate cake was the best kind of motivation for him. Now if only you could somehow work that into potty training, toy pick-up, fit throwing and napping right?
You must have baked one great chocolate cake!
