Interesting Psak: the rules of jihad

Islamic CLeric Dr Salman Al-Dhaya (sp?) of Gaza has recently issued a fatwa,or Islamic psak halacha, saying the October 7 brutal attack by Hamas against Israel was prohibited and against the laws of Islam and of Jihad.

Al-Dhaya said that they should not have perpetrated the attack so as not to destroy the lives of the affected people. They should not have attacked. Further, Hamas had committed to distancing the fighting from the local civilians and to distribute aid and security in various forms. The Koran and Suna, Dr Al Dhaya says, lay out the conditions for jihad and in jihad one is supposed to avoid actions that will cause an exaggerated and disproportionate response from the enemy that will create a response more costly than the benefits of the jihad.
source: N12

The good cleric better watch himself, considering he just issued a psak against Hamas...

That being said, despite this psak being against Hamas, he isnt perturbed by the brutal massacre and horrors perpetrated by Hamas on innocent Israeli civilians. He is only upset at them for having caused Israel to respond disproportionately and hurt Palestinian civilians.

end the war so that...

Yaakov Rivlin of the Bakehilla newspaper (a Haredi weekly that is only in print, not online, though they have a not very active Twitter/X account) reports in this week's edition that an unnamed MK from UTJ has said:
"There is no chance for the Draft law to pass that the Tzionut Hadatit [party] could live with as long as the war is ongoing with nearly daily reports of "hutar lpirsum" [soldiers deaths].. r"l. We have to pray for a diplomatic arrangement that will finish this war."

Sad. Disconnected. Even enraging. This disconnect is what so many people including in the National Religious are so upset about right now, and they just dont get it.

We dont have to daven to finish the war so that no more young men, and middle aged men, will die. We dont have to daven to finish the war to bring some stability back to the people of Israel, to the citizens, to the economy. We dont have to daven for the end of the war for the hostages to come home.  We have to daven for the end of the war so that the National Religious people will finally agree to a Draft Law so that we, or almost none of us, will have to go to the army.

ceasefire betrayal?

According to a report in the Washington Post Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already basically agreed to a ceasefire but is only going to put it into effect in January as a gift to incoming US President Donald Trump. Netanyahu does not want to give President Biden a "win" but does want to curry favor with Trump who wants the wars to end (while telling Israel finish the wars but get it done, do what you have to do) so will wait on the arrangements until January when Trump takes office.

If this is true, it would be criminal of Netanyahu and a betrayal of the people of Israel. Our sons and daughters, husbands, fathers, sisters, brothers need to continue dying and being injured in Lebanon (and Gaza, which might not have the same arrangement), having their lives destroyed, their families torn apart, soldiers undergoing mental traumas, people's lives upended for an extra couple of months all so Netanyahu can curry favor with Trump, rather than the need for battle? If true, this would be disgraceful. There will be plenty of other wins to give Trump later.

Take as many as possible

A Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom has tweeted out her plan to save the Gazans in danger of war and disease and famine. Her plan is something called the Gaza Family Visa Scheme. the plan would allow Palestinians from Gaza with family members in the United Kingdom to seek temporary sanctuary in the United Kingdom until it is safe to return to Gaza.

While many online have commented to her about how this is a stupid plan, why bring terrorists to the UK, they are importing trouble, etc.. I personally encourage it.

While I do not call for "transfer", if they want to leave n their own volition, and if the UK government is willing to take them in, I say go. I support this MP in her plan to bring Gazans to the UK. I have no vested interest in the United Kingdom so I do not care if they destroy the UK like they are working on destroying other European countries, after they have done their best to destroy this part of the Middle East. Please, vote in favor of this plan. Bring in as many Gazans as you possibly can. Do not limit it to immediate family, first degree relatives or anything like that - take in 3rd or 4th cousins as well, along with the brother in law of a sister in law of a cousin of an uncle of a neighbor. Take them all. Please.

different shiurim

I have wondered about this many times, and I have never come up with a satisfactory answer. it is just a curiosity in my mind.

Why is it that most shiurim for women cost money with an entrance fee of some sort, while most shiurim for me are free.

Obviously there are some shiurim for women that are free and some shiurim for men that cost money to attend, but for the most part, the overwhelming majority of shiurim for men are free and most shiurim for women seem to cost money.

Any idea why that is?

And no, I am not saying people who give these shiurim dont deserve to be paid or that people must teach for free or that people must be able to go to classes for free or that everyone has to pay. I am not saying anything of the sort. Just wondering why usually women have to pay and usually men do not have to pay.

Sessions with Shulem: Mama Rochel Medley ft. Zaltz Band (video)

In this latest installment of the "Sessions with Shulem" series, we draw inspiration from Mama Rochel, the Mother of Klal Yisroel. Tonight, on her yahrzeit, we cry out to Hashem alongside her, remembering how her tears, filled with unwavering hope, broke through the heavens. Yaakov Avinu buried her on the road specifically so that we, her children, could come to her kever to daven and ask her to intercede with Hashem on our behalf. We turn to her now, begging for all the yeshuos we so desperately need and for an end to this bitter galus. As you watch and listen, let the music guide your tefillah. Together, let’s ask Mama Rochel to bring our prayers before the Throne of Hashem, pleading for the day when Moshiach comes and all our tears are wiped away forever.

scandals in place of investigations

Several scandals have surfaced in the Prime Minister's Office over the past few days... and lots of arguing over who actually knew what and who didnt know what and when and who said what to who and who tried to change protocols and who didn't....

I am not going to comment on those scandals. I dont think we have enough information to know what really happened. I personally don't understand much of what has been reported or the ramifications of what was supposedly done and who was doing illegal things and who was hurt by those actions...

That being said, I will say these arguments and investigations and exposes and attacks and all that are all superfluous. There is one thing that is needed that will get to the bottom of everything. If we would have a State Commission of Enquiry, the investigative body that PM Netanyahu has blocked from day 1 from being established, it would look into all these aspects of what was going on and we would get some answers. But since we cant have a formal investigation, we have to rely on isolated investigations, isolated incidents, leaks on specific issues and then argue about who is really responsible and who really did what. Just set up the formal investigation already and let the people start getting some real answers and the fuller picture of what happened.

Qatar shoots.... and hopefully misses..

The news is now reporting that Qatar has asked Israel to commit to not target/assassinate Hamas leaders located in Qatar.

I do not know what Israel's response was, or if Israel responded at all, but if Israel were to respond I would hope and expect that Israel would refuse to give any such commitment.

No report was included as to what Qatar is offering in exchange for such a commitment, so why commit to this? Qatar hasnt given Israel anything other than time for Hamas, so they should consider taking a hike.

And, if the recent reports are true that Qatar has banished Hamas leadership from its country, why does it have to continue to worry about what Israel might do to the Hamas leaders in Qatar - arent they no longer there?

Hey,, I guess it cant hurt to ask... as they say, you miss 100% of the shots you dont take...

another yeshiva budget crisis to be added to the crisis

With the ongoing crisis regarding the Draft Law and the Daycare Law, Yated Neeman, the newspaper of the United Torah Judaism party brought to our attention a new issue that could exacerbate the crisis.

The article says the MIK Moshe Saada (Likud proposed a law to grant additional special benefits and whatnot to reservists. One of the clauses int he proposal states that any institution whose students do not draft to the IDF will not get any government allocations/budgets.

UTJ found this clause and says that this clause presents an existential danger to the yeshivas.

According to Yated, UTJ has let the Likud know that if this clause remains included in the law to be presented UTJ will see itself as not obligated to vote on other laws presented by the Likud demanding coalition support.

A few points:
1. Didnt the UTJ gedolim recently plan for decoupling the yeshivas from the government budgets and went out and raised $110 million (plus)? Why would this be such a serious problem for the yeshivas if this was already planned for?
2. Again, like what I pointed out yesterday, interestingly the threat is not to leave the government but to not vote on Likud law proposals in line with the coalition. A law proposal that UTJ is considering to be a serious threat against the yeshivas and UTJ isnt even bluffing with threats to leave the coalition!

I must say, it does seem that even though PM Netanyahu and some others in the Likud might not be on board yet, many in the Likud have had enough with the situation. They all know and recognize the crisis they would be causing when they say they won't support this or that by other coalition members, including the Haredi parties, and they are causing the crises anyway..

proposal for Hezbollah

There has been talk in recent days about the possibility of a ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

I dont know if it will or wont happen, but here is what I would suggest, were anyone involved going to ask me:

As I recall, Hezbollah tied themselves to Hamas since the beginning of the war. They started firing on Israel on October 8th and claimed it was in solidarity with Hamas and the Palestinians. Anytime an agreement was proposed, Hezbollah said they would only agree to a ceasefire if it included an end to the war in Gaza as part of a ceasefire with Hamas.

If Hezbollah wants a ceasefire now, I would suggest Israel respond that they accept Hezbollah's statements from the past year connecting them to Hamas and will only agree to a ceasefire with Hezbollah if it includes a ceasefire with Hamas, and a ceasefire with Hamas will only happen if Hamas surrenders and dismantles itself and returns the hostages to Israel.

If Hezbollah is finally feeling battered enough and wants to end this, let the pressure be on them to find a way to pressure Hamas to end it in Gaza too. All roads lead through Iran so it should not be too difficult to find a way to do this (though it might not be too easy to persuade Hamas at first) - they just have to go back to the head of the octopus and make that decision. Iran is feeling a bit battered as well. Their recent statements have changed their tune from things like we will destroy Israel and America to we just want to live in peace and not fight with anybody but it is Israel that is destabilizing the region. They clearly would love a way out of this, and Hezbollah can offer that.

Camel Races

This past Friday Israel hosted its first ever legal camel race. (source: TOI)

The race took place down south, in the Negev. With thousands of cheering spectators. I wonder if betting on the camels was allowed.

It seems like this is one of those theories of how to deal with [certain] crimes - legalize it and make it as safe as possible and collect tax money from it, or keep it illegal and dont collect tax money and allow it to remain unsafe and dangerous with likely cruelty to animal abuses as well. Camel races have been going on a long time, though only illegally. This is the first time it was done in a legal format. Maybe Israel decided legalizing it will better regulate it, since it is happening anyway, and make some tax revenue on it.

The camel races this past Friday were set for two distances - 12 kilometers and six kilometers for young camels, with prize money offered to the winning camels. The top prize was  12000nis.

Honestly, slightly disappointing - 12 kilometers isnt even a half marathon! The camels should have been able to do better than 12km.

They have turned this into a symbol of hope and coexistence, with both Bedouin and Jewish attendees. I am somewhat skeptical about this but if it makes them feel good about themselves, all the better. Peace and coexistence will be achieved when the Jews are not just among the spectators but also of owners of some of the competing camels.

Next time, if I find out about this in advance, I will plan to go.

Troll of the Day

great troll, though not quite sure what they are attempting to accomplish, theoretically, other than being funny and trollish..

In light of the recent incident with MK Kroizer and how that incident brought an end to Kroizer's reserve duty service, soldiers in Gaza did a similar staging and called it "The Parliamentary Office in Gaza of MK Ofir Kassif".

My first statement is in place because Kroizer was booted from miluim, not the Knesset, so this wouldnt hurt Kassif as he isnt in miluim and wont be booted from the Knesset, even theoretically (meaning, had it really been him in the picture). It is a troll, as if  Kassif's office is really meant to be in Gaza and trolling the army as well with another parliamentary office in enemy territory....

cloud theft brings rain

Back in 2018 the Iranians accused Israel of "cloud theft" causing a drought in Iran...

you may have scoffed back then, but we never really found out the real details of the recent Israeli strike on Iran. Israeli Air Force planes spent 3 hours in Iranian air space able to work unimpeded after taking out the defense systems. Did they take out Iranian nuclear sites or oil fields - prime targets - with such unimpeded access? It seems they didnt't.

So if Israel was not going for those prime targets, what were the air force planes spending three hours doing in Iranian air space? Are we really meant to believe they were doing such important things while not actually doing the most important things when they had the chance?

I know what I just wrote above makes little sense, but little about this incident does.

unless the Israeli Air Force went back to Iran to steal more clouds. That makes sense! The air force planes were flying around Iran for 3 hours collecting all their clouds!

And that is why we now have rain in Israel? After spending several days analyzing the Iranian clouds, making sure they were not infected or dangerous, and then distributing them around Israel in crucial areas, it is suddenly raining! Coincidence? I think not!

IDF clarification

Regarding my earlier post about MK Kroizer in Lebanon and having opened an ad hoc parliamentary office, with the ensuing brouhaha, the IDF has now responded.

This was made into a big deal. the army responded.

Basically, the IDF Spokesperson said that in general when someone in the IDF Reserves becomes a Member of Knesset, his service is frozen (it is considered a security risk). If a specific request is made to serve despite being a Member of Knesset, each request is weighed individually depending on the reasons and the need. Several similar requests have been approved. MK Kroizer, specifically, was approved for a limited time and for a specific mission in Lebanon. Upon completion of the mission, Kroizer is meant to go back to the Knesset and his reserve duty to be frozen again.

In all such cases, the person is told to not make anything public about being an MK or public servant  with his reserve duty service. Kroizer committed to this as well. The head of HR in the IDF decided due to the violation of this commitment to terminate the reserve duty allowance. However, because MK Kroizer claimed he neither photographed the image nor sprayed the graffiti nor distributed the photo and it was all done by others and it was done after completion of the approved mission MK Kroizer will be granted the 8 days of R&R he was qualified for.

ICONIC JEWISH WOMEN

ICONIC JEWISH WOMEN

A STORY BY DR. HAROLD GOLDMEIER

Harold.goldmeier@gmail.com

972 50 2619116

Harold Goldmeier teaches international university students at Touro College Jerusalem. He is an award-winning entrepreneur who received the Governor’s Award (Illinois) for family investment programs in the workplace from the Commission on the Status of Women. He was a Research and Teaching Fellow at Harvard, worked for four governors, and recently sold his business in Chicago. He is a managing partner of an investment firm, a business management consultant, and a public speaker on business, social, and public policy issues.

Young girls and women give short shrift to exercises on building self-confidence and esteem. They suffer through awkward years around bat mitzvah time absorbing ideas about themselves that can squash their confidence for a lifetime. A plethora of women’s magazines have tried for decades to address the issue. Forbes talks in numerous articles about how business leaders lacking self-confidence nurture fear and limit risk-taking. A Harvard Business Review study goes further; self-satisfaction with the trajectories of women’s lives and careers is intimately linked to their self-confidence and self-esteem.

Author Dr. Aliza Lavie published a new book shining a light on the subject. She gives overdue gravitas and attention to Iconic Jewish Women (Gefen Publishing House, 2024): 59 Inspiring, Courageous, Revolutionary, Role Models for Young Girls. It is a book every girl ought to have in her library. Read it when you are 12 and again at 18, 35 and 65. Each reading brings new insights. The exercises can enhance the self-confidence and esteem of women as extrinsic events reshape the image and roles of women in religious, spiritual, political, and cultural milieus.

This is also a workbook. Be prepared to put in effort to build and repeatedly rebuild self-confidence and self-esteem. “Each chapter in this book tells the story of one inspirational Jewish woman (among dozens) and then suggests four different ways in which you can mark your bat mitzvah in her honor and make your own contribution to the world around you.”

After each short biography, Lavie wants the reader to figure out how to give back, see something new, and escape your comfort zone. The biographies are brief but poignant and impactful. Iconic Jewish Women has 322 pages of bios, suggested projects, and another three pages of lists of women who make a difference in world events and daily life. Mentors give advice. But heroes emotionally tie one to actions. Lavie offers inspiring examples from Biblical characters who shaped Judeo-value and belief systems through modern social justice leaders and scholars.

The book centers around the reader celebrating her bat mitzvah. Lavie’s history of the bat mitzvah is fascinating as is her telling of ways the bat mitzvah is celebrated around the globe. Lavie covers ancient through contemporary women. Lavie’s timeline and glossary should be of interest to history buffs and the inquisitive of every faith.

A personal word from my lifetime of experience. Violence against women crushes their self-confidence and self-esteem. Rape and torture are tools of war, but every day we learn about sexual assaults in domestic and workplaces. A host of Lavie’s iconic women confronted violence against them like an undercurrent in every generation. The stories might help those with shaky self-confidence and self-esteem.

The bios are organized alphabetically but looking at them generationally little changed for women until the 1920s after global economic industrialization. Lavie’s collection demonstrates how women with self-confidence changed the world and the opportunities for Jewish women, from Queen Esther and Rachel to “Battling Bella” Abzug. We cannot forget Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks because the success of the U. S. Civil Rights Movement was the greatest gift of freedom to Jews and Gentiles. It spawned the Jewish Power Movement solidifying the community’s independence and use of self-defense to solidify the State of Israel by building self-confidence and self-esteem among Jewish immigrants and their children. It opened doors for any Jewish girl or woman to turn dreams into reality. Jewish females were inspirational founders and leaders in social justice causes. But men still fail at giving women their due.

The IDF field observer teams monitoring Israel’s border with Gaza, overwhelmingly women, were ignored by male commanders, their pleas dismissed, and the world’s future changed forever. Interviewees from the unit share insights revealing how men ignored women shattering their self-confidence and esteem.  We hope there is a next edition which includes their stories.

In our opinion, Alice Lavie’s bio should be included in the next edition. Lavie is a Ph.D., former Knesset member, Film Council Chair, and advocate to end sex trafficking. Our own Bais Yaacov-educated daughter rose to advanced investigator of child sex trafficking adding to my admiration for Lavie’s iconic career. The cover of the book inadequately conveys the message. Iconic Jewish Women in no way slights men but the book tells much of the rest of the story of how women helped build Jewish life and Israel to the high point in self-confidence and self-esteem we are today.

Picture of the Day

MK Yitzchak Korizer (Otzma Yehudit, while serving his reserve duty in combat in South Lebanon, opened a "Parliamentary Office"

MK Kroizer has been booted out of miluim due to the posting of this picture. As of this writing I dont have further details nor an understanding of why but my presumption is that the army, all armies, is all about discipline. Many soldiers got away with similar shenanigans in Gaza for a long time but eventually the IDF started cracking down and putting an end to it.

coalition crisis?

This issue with the budget and the Draft Law looks like it might turn into a real crisis.

The Finance Minister, Betzalel Smotritch, is supposed to bring the new budget to the government by October 29 so that it has enough time to be passed by the end of the year. To note, if the budget does not get passed in time, the Knesset automatically disperses and the country goes to elections.

The Draft Law is on the docket and the Haredi parties are upset that it has been repeatedly postponed, causing all sorts of problems for them (especially the issue of subsidized day care).

After several threats to get the Draft law passed that saw the Haredi parties back down at the last moment, Minister Goldknopf recently repeatedly threatened several times to not allow the budget to pass unless the Draft law is passed first. As well, other laws would be blocked until the Draft Law is passed. The general thinking has been that as always they wont carry through with the threat and will back down at the last moment because they dont want to bring down the government, and in the worst case scenario Bibi will pay them off in some way to back down again. This time though with Goldknopf stepping up the threats it might be a real crisis.

Additionally, Smotritch responded to Goldknopf's demand of passing the Draft law before the budget saying it isnt going to happen. Some Likud MKs also spoke up today saying they will not support the Draft Law. Ben Gvir spoke up saying drafting to the IDF needs to be incentivized, and he is against forcing - people are taking that as supporting the Haredi position but he never said he would support the Draft Law so in my mind it is still unknown what Ben Gvir will do.

In an attempt to stave off the crisis, PM Netanyahu called a meeting of the heads of the coalition parties.

Interestingly, reporters have been reporting that Smotritch, Deri and Gafni did not participate in this meeting. So basically, if accurate, this meeting became one of Netanyahu, Saar, Ben Gvir, and Goldknopf.

I still think that Netanyahu has a card up his sleeve and may call for early elections, dispersing the Knesset. This solves the budget issues (which rumor has it the budget isnt ready) and the Draft Law issues. And, recent polls continue to show Netanyahu growing in power and popularity back to pre-war times. if Netanyahu trusts those polls and his internal polling supports the numbers as well. This very well might happen. I dont make predictions but I wouldnt be surprised if this happens. If he was really smart, he would do it over a hostage deal, but doing it over the draft law isnt so bad for him either if no hostage deal is to be had in a timely fashion. It may be his only solution if he cant get everyone to toe the line.

another storm is coming

Another storm is coming.

That is the message displayed on a large billboard in Palestine Square in Tehran, after Israel's strike on Friday night.

The working theory is that Iran is threatening Israel with another "October 7" style attack.

Let's not forget, the official name of the Oct 7 Hamas operation Was "The Al Aqsa Storm"

First, I dont even know if Iran is capable, at this point, of carrying out any such devastating attack. Hamas has been, and continues to be further, decimated in Gaza by the IDF. Hezbollah in the north is being decimated with almost all its leaders having been taken out pretty quickly and then their replacements also being taken out almost immediately, and then good portions of the weapons stores and tunnels being taken out. Iran's attacks in Israel have been minimally effective. The Houthis are ravaging the shipping lanes int he Red Sea but they arent capable of an October 7 like storm on Israel. The Israel Air Force spent like 3 hours, reportedly, in Iranian airspace unchallenged, and they also had to fly over and through Iraqi airspace to get there.  Iran has already shown itself to be a paper tiger, as long as it doesnt go nuclear.

Second, if Israel should decide to attack Iran directly again, I would encourage the planners of such an attack to have our pilots destroy Palestine Square with a couple heavy bombs. Or to avoid civilian casualties, maybe have some troops or agents on the ground do it more covertly.

This image is not PotD just to show women are highly capable but due to the irony of these women taking part in the attack on Iran where women are so suppressed...
