"Well, hellooooo there!"

Hello!

said the giraffe, "Please do come in!"

I've had this post sitting in my drafts for a year, and just now, I saw that my friend Rachel had posted her about the quilt a year on, and thought I should finally share this.

Some friends and I secretly made our friend Rachel a quilt for her new baby. We started not long after she announced her pregnancy, so whilst she was busy baking a beautiful baby, we were conspiring to make him/her a beautiful quilt. The block above is the one that I made. AJ is the real hero, she put all those very different blocks together and made them into a beautiful quilt.

Crafty Hijinks

The Crafty Hijinksters and the Crafty Squirrel

Last Weekend I got up to some Hijinks. Crafty Hijinks in Ballarat. The day was organised by Jodie and Gillian of Ric-Rac and Silly Gilly. If you are not familiar with their blogs you should go and check them out now. I promise I will wait here for you. If you decide to come back, that is.

Ballarat is not just a hop, skip and a jump from here, so when I first saw that the Hijinks was happening, I dismissed it as being unfeasible. But the idea was niggling away at me. You see, I really, REALLY wanted to go. When I eventually checked the train timetables, I could see that it could be done. So I got on it and booked myself a place at Crafty Hijinks, ignoring the fact that this would see me using/waiting for public transport for almost eight hours. I just told myself it would be worth it.

Ballarat

I left home at a ridiculous hour and upon arrival in Ballarat, I was met by Annie Flowergarden and Little Red Hen (Jan). You should go and check out their blogs too, they are lovely, lovely ladies. Annie and Jan were entrusted with picking up the 50 scones for morning tea. Ah yes, we'll have three coffees and fifty scones please :) Haha. And then we set off for Hijinks.

Everyone got a little "sample bag" at the Hijinks, it contained all sorts of little samples, some of which you can see here.

Samples

Everyone who attended received a door prize. Rebecca's and Cathie's daughters were barrel girls and drew tickets out of the barrel. We all had a number on the back of our name badges. When the girls drew out number 40, I won this awesome pack of Cosmo embroidery threads from Gum Valley Patchwork.

My Door Prize

In addition to sample bags and door prizes, there was also a raffle. Tickets were only $1 each and the proceeds went to charity. There were seven prizes in total. Each prize had a bucket in front of it and we could choose which buckets our tickets went into. I put most of my tickets into the bucket in front of the lightbox and was very, very excited when my ticket was drawn out!

The most AWESOME raffle prize EVER

Another thing we did was have a take what you want table. Everyone brought stash items that they no longer wanted. I filled a suitcase with fabric from home. I was really good and only grabbed this small piece of fabric to take home with me. Some of the fabric I took is going to be used to make a rag rug. It will be interesting to see if any of the fabric I took shows up transformed on someone else's blog someday.

My Haul from the take what you want table

The best part of Crafty Hijinks was catching up with all the fabulous bloggers. Some I had met before, and others who I hadn't met before, but felt like I already knew...

Rachel & Me

Rachel from Four Wise Monkeys

Lara & Karen

Lara from Thornberry and Karen from And So, I Sew

Brianna & Cathie

Brianna from Rolling in Fabric and Cathie from Melbourne Epicure.

Rebecca's Hexagon workshop

Rebecca from Beccasaurus - Rebecca held a little hexagon workshop. Speaking of workshops, Jodie also did a rag-rug workshop at some stage, which I totally missed, and also Wendy of Harty Little Peaces did a bit of a workshop on colour theory.

It was nice at the end of the day to grab a lift back to Melbourne with Nikki of You Sew Girl. Thank you Nikki, I enjoyed talking with you. Thank you to Jodie and Gilly for organising the whole shebang and also, thanks to Annie and Jan for getting me from the train station to the Hijinks. And a really big thank you to all the businesses who donated items for the door prizes, raffles and goody bags - especially those prizes that I won! Thank you to those that ran workshops and thank you just to everyone who came because it wouldn't have been that much fun without you all. It was an awesome day and I have only just recovered from it.

The end result of my massive donation to the take what you want table is that I reduced my stash by 148 fat quarters. There was more fabric than that, but some of what I took was from a bag of stuff someone recently gave me. I will take that off my "fabric in" total rather than adding it to my fabric out, since I donated it, rather than sewing it.

SYST13 Running totals: in = 107, out = 95, total = +12

27. Awesome Day Out

Polly Pratt Pop Up Shop

Mum and I had a big day out today. We started at the Polly Pratt Pop Up Studio which was at the back of the Olive Grove Studios in Brunswick.

Polly Pratt Pop Up Shop

If you get a chance, you should pop into the Olive Grove and check out their wares. There were some lovely skirts and dresses there made by Finki, Starashan , Dear Someone and Polly Pratt amongst others. I don't think I have ever seen so many items of clothing I wanted to buy in the one shop before. It really made me want to go and make myself some more skirts too, there was so much hand-made inspiration. If you're wishing you could've made it to the pop-up store, I have it on good authority they will be doing this again really soon. When I hear more I will let you know here.

CurlyPops is in the shop!

When we arrived, I was a litte disappointed to see that Cam was not there, so we hung around for a bit and then went to Spotlight before coming back. It turns out that CurlyPops was just having a little trouble getting a parking spot. Lucky we came back! I snapped up a few of the Curlypops mini fabric panels, snapped a quick pic of Cam in her beautiful Polly Pratt dress, and then we went on our way.

Tessuti

Our next stop was Cleggs - I grabbed myself some nice skirt fabric, admired the Liberty of London prints, drooled over some silk suiting and then we headed to Tessuti. Oh, one day I wish to head to Tessuti with a few hundred dollars in my hand. Sometimes you get lucky and find some amazing things in the remnant bin. Today, I found some that were perfect for mum. She agreed and took them home. I am pretty sure they were really good bargains. I was also insanely jealous of the ladies that were there, enjoying their SEWING LESSONS! Oh my goodness. I really don't need to do (beginner) sewing lessons, but what a lovely location for someone to learn how to sew. I hope they know how good they have it.

The Haby Goddess

Our next stop was the Craft and Sewing Show in Caulfield. We pretty much made a bee-line for the Haby Goddess stand, where I said Hi to Jodi and purchased one of her Turn-it-All tools. I also grabbed some Clover Wonder Clips from the Punch with Judy stand and was really tempted by some buttons at the Chocolate Coated stand. I can't wait to try out my new tools!

Awesome price - but I'm not in the market

This was a pretty good bargain. I am totally not in the market for a new machine at the moment, but I spotted this and just knew I should let people know. If you have been thinking about getting yourself a Janome Horizon, you've got until 4:30 tomorrow afternoon to organise yourself. I have never seen this machine so cheap. If you look in the background, you can see the price displayed for the brand new model, which has not officially been released in Australia yet. That too, is a very good price.

My (very tame) haul

I had a great day out with my mum. Whilst there were some really good stands at the show, it really lacked the atmosphere and excitement of some of the other craft, sewing and quilting shows I have been to. There seemed to be a lot less exhibitors to what I have seen before, particularly at this venue. I am glad we went to other places in Melbourne before we went and I think I will be doing my craft show visits this way in the future.

Are you from Melbourne and into the craft/fabric scene? What shops/places do you recommend I check out next time?

Today...

I went to the library for story-time and picked up a crafty book that I had reserved. I will come back and do a review later...

DSCF1142

I received a little crafty mail.

DSCF1143

I went to my local fabric shop and bought some zips... why is it that I have a massive stash of zips, but I hardly ever have what I need and still have to go buy them?

DSCF1140

I did a little gardening in the vegie garden...

I cried for my friend who was called in for her lung transplant this morning, only to find the lungs weren't suitable after all.

....and I changed my blog header.

Look What the Postman Brought!

DSCF1327

I was very surprised to find the postman at the door with a parcel the other day. This beautiful Olearia was gifted to my baby, Amélie, by Susan of The Brissmiths. It is hand-knitted from lovely, lovely Bendigo yarn. It is a little large at the moment, but I think it works just nicely over the top of a dress for now.
