About Mindy Larson :-

Mindy Rae Boyer Larson was born in 1977 in Provo, Utah. She is the eldest of four children and only daughter. The family moved to the salt lake county in the early eighties when her father got a job at the USPS.

With a very vivid imagination storytelling came only natural. Often she entertained her younger brothers with evening story tales. Her strong passion for reading and a desire to write her own fairy tales led her to write her first book at the tender age of seven. It remains locked up in a box for safe keeping.

At the age of fourteen she baffled her classmates when she looked forward to her honors English homework rather than heading off to the movies or to canyons with the rest. Mindy often completed twenty page book reports on the day they were assigned and rarely got less than A's on her writing assignments.

She has written dozens of kids’ books, short stories, and many other works “This Morning I Woke Up Dead” is her first published novel. Currently Mindy is working on the sequel and has plans to publish numerous more and to never stop writing.

When Mindy isn't writing she is looking after her four kids, cats, and dog. Being a passionate person her other favorite pastimes include; working out, playing disc golf, cooking, baking, traveling, and exploring.

After a long search, she has finally found her true love and lives happily ever after in South East Idaho with her four kids, two girls and two boys, and the love of her life.

A Guest Post just for you all ....

My first experience publishing

After eight months of pouring my heart into my book, This Morning I Woke Up Dead, I typed the words, The End. The most powerful words I'd ever written. Many emotions overcame me. Joy. Relief. Excitement. I was even a little sad that it was over. I remember, gazing at the words in complete awe. It felt similar to having just had a baby. It took nearly nine months. I fell in love with my book, just as I did with my babies. It was a lot of work. It was painful at times. Knowing my job as as the author was finished, and that I had a responsibility to my beloved characters, Hadley, Dominic, Logan and Emerson, I wanted to share their story with the world.

First of all, you need to know one thing about me, one of my flaws is that I'm impatient. This gets me in trouble from time to time. I'd like to think I've gotten better at 'playing the waiting game' as I've gotten older, but I'd also like to think I don't look a day over twenty five either. Anyhow, in March of 2013, and in my haste to get my book 'out there', I self published. Mistakenly, I never bothered to write a single inquiry letter to an agent or publishing house - until later on and I'll get to that- but first, back to my adventures in self publishing. Head first, I dived right in! I created an account on createspace.com and they walked me through the process. It was super easy. My nine year old could do it. This is one reason why the business I am in is so difficult to be a part of. Its flooded and hard to shine amongst all the others.

Anyone and everyone can now be a published author.

After I created my account, I uploaded my document and it was approved in about 48 hours. All that was left was to do was hit the submit button. It was live within a day. Wow! My story, my words are now out there for the world to see!

What a shame no one knew.

And that no one cared.

I sold one copy the first day and I'm pretty sure it was to my brother! A week went by. Two weeks. Three. And I had only sold two copies. Two!

Somewhere along the line, I joined lots of groups on Goodreads.com. In hopes of getting others to read and review my book, I posted in numerous forums saying I was seeking reviews and in exchange I would send them a copy of my book. Luckily, my title and the premise of my story stood out and people took notice. I met a lot of great people; readers, bloggers, and other authors. Most of the people I met, I'm still friends with today. (Jen being one of them.) From here I did a few book giveaways on Goodreads and gained more exposure. Over 800 people entered to win a signed copy and nearly all of them added it to their reading list. I found out later that it doesn't necessarily mean they will in fact read my book, let alone buy it.

In late April of 2012 I contacted my local radio and news stations and I got spots on their morning shows. If you ever get the chance to be on the news or the radio, I highly recommend it! What a rush! I was also fortunate enough to do a few book signings in my hometown. No one really knew who I was. Most didn't care enough to ask. A few were kind enough to stop and chat with me about my book. All the same I had a blast. By this point in the game, I might have sold in upwards to twenty or thirty books.

The months went on.

And on.

And on.

Besides promoting on my Facebook, Goodreads, twitter, and Pinterest accounts, I was at a loss as to what to do next. I knew I had a good product but what I didn't know was how to get it in the right hands. Not to mention, I was spending more time trying to spread the word than doing what I loved, writing. In the day after my book was finished, I started a sequel but it wasn't getting the attention it deserved. Part of me wanted to throw in the towel. The only thing that kept me going was all the great reviews that kept trickling in. They kept me positive and told me I was on the right path.

Talk about validating!

Another thing I did in my pursuit to becoming noticed, I participated in a lot of Facebook love fest's; I liked others pages and in return they liked mine. It was fun to see the numbers grow from 200 to over 800 in just a few days. And again, I met a lot of people this way. Readers. Authors. Reviewers. Bloggers. And even publishers! Bingo! There it is.

Things changed for me when I liked a new up and coming publishing company, Lavish Publishing LLC. I remember it was a Saturday afternoon and, for whatever reason, I was feeling gutsy. I sent a private message to Lavish; I told her a little about my book. She was intrigued and messaged me back quickly, saying she was interested and wanted to read it! I sent her a copy of my book that minute and by late Sunday night, she emailed me back. She was in love with my vision and wanted to work with me! Little ole' me. Just a stay at home mom, turned author. The feeling was empowering. Thrilling. Exciting. I had no negative emotions about it at all. This is how I knew I was, once again, on the right path.

On November 11th 2013 I signed a contract with Lavish Publishing LLC. It felt great to be a signed author and to no longer be going at things alone. Before my book was re-released, changes were made. Things were revamped. I wrote fifty or so extra pages including a new expanded ending, received a beautiful new cover, a press release was written, a book trailer was made, a virtual book tour was in place, and websites and bloggers were contacted. My reviews, number of fans, and networking circle grew.

So have I hit it big yet? No. Do I just sit back and let my publisher do all the work? No. I still do a lot of marketing and networking on my own. But I no longer do it all alone. Michelle and I are a team. She bounces ideas off of me, and always has new things up her sleeve for us to try. The best part is that I have more time to write. I've learned to do my thing, let things be, and allow things to unfold as they will. My motto is always believe and never give up!

Thanks for reading about my publishing experiences!! Best of luck to you and I hope you'll follow your dreams as well!

Author bio:-

Anyone who knows me could tell you, I am a friendly kind of person, never met a stranger and take up conversations anywhere at any time. I work hard, and my mind never seems to shut down, as I wake up often in the middle of the night with ideas pouring out and demanding to be dealt with. Of course that means much of my books were written in the middle of the night.

I grew up and still live in the great state of Texas where everything is bigger, where we have warm weather and a central location. I love my state, my town, and my family, which includes my four sons, my significant other, and many friends as well.

I have thoroughly enjoyed writing the books that are currently available and hope you will enjoy reading them just as much. And of course, there will be many more stories to come.

Something from the author....

The Real McCoy: Creating Realistic Characters

So we all know that ‘the real McCoy’ is an idiom which simply means the real thing. Where did it come from? Who knows? There are tons of claims about the origin of ‘the real McCoy, some of them being a variation of the title a song, the last name of a Kansas major back in the 1800’s and the last name of an engineer and inventor of the oil drip cup. As for me, since there really isn’t a concrete origin behind ‘the real McCoy’, I’d like to put my two cents in and say that the term was derived from Hank McCoy, a fictional, blue character from the X-men. Hank, whose mutant alias is ‘Beast’, is special for a number of reasons. Besides the blue fur and feline attributes, Beast is incredibly intelligent, has superhuman strength and is a political activist for the mutants. Though Beast is strong, agile and intelligent, he had to get past self-consciousness (totally understandable when you have blue fur) and a struggle for acceptance. What I believe makes any fictional character unique is a balance between strengths and weaknesses. If you create a character with just the right balance, you’re making them realistic and your readers will connect with them.

Before beginning any story, I like to create a character profile. For my first novel, The Reunion, I purchased a poster board like the one students use for science fair projects. On the board, I listed my characters and included categories like profession, goals, appearance, strengths and weaknesses. I would definitely recommend the use of a board over a computer because there’s no need for scrolling. Everything you need is right in front of you and you can sit back, compare and contrast. (This won’t work if you’re always on the go.) For me, a plus with using the poster board was that I was able to catch that a few of my characters were too similar (I.e. height, hair color, mannerisms). For my second book, The Asylum, I tried to make a character profile using Microsoft Excel but it wasn’t the same as sitting around a table and using the old fashioned paper and pencil. For my third book, I’m planning on using a white board where I can include not only character profiles but I can scribble plots and ideas all on an erasable platform.

Strengths and weakness, I believe, are the strongest criteria for making a character seem realistic. If you create a character that is strong, intelligent, forgiving and generous yet they have no weaknesses, the reader will lose interest because they’ll know that this character will easily overcome adversity. There has to be come kind of challenge. On the other hand, if your character is pessimistic, weak and mean, readers will grow annoyed and not root for them. Balance is the key. It’s fine to create an exceptionally strong character but that character needs to have a flaw or weakness. For example, in The Reunion, the character who’s a meteorologist and graduated at the top of his class had to get over a stuttering issue. In my latest book, The Asylum, the main character, Melissa Andrews, is bold and guarded but has a special place in her heart for children.

We connect not only to people who are similar to us but also to people who are real. We know that no one is perfect (though many people still claim they are). Every one of us has strengths and weaknesses even if we haven’t quite come to terms with them. Fictional characters should have unique backgrounds, goals, idiosyncrasies, strengths, phobias and weaknesses. Rather than searching online for character background generators, simply look around you and you’ll see that this world is overflowing with interesting and unique characters.

VIRTUAL BOOK TOUR: UnGentle Sleep by B.Lloyd [Guest Post & Giveaway]

Hey Folks! Hope you all are doing great....as promised by the specifications of the TOURZ DE CODEX, I present to you all the last tour spot of author B.Lloyd's UnGentle Sleep "Haunted House Virtual Book tour". Let me present before you all a guest post and the only exclusive giveaway of the tour.....enjoy....

About the Author:-

A Beautiful artwork by the author.

A Bustle attached to a keyboard, occasionally to be seen floating on a canal …

After studying Early Music followed by a brief career in concert performance, the Bustle exchanged vocal parts for less vocal arts i.e. a Diploma from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia.

Her inky mess, both graphic and verbal, can be found in various regions of the Web, and appendaged to good people’s works (for no visible reason that she can understand).

About the book:-

“1930

When Aubrey Marchant's engagement to Eleanor Maydew was announced to his friends, he received mixed blessings.

‘The Maydews are a bohemian lot – not many servants, even before the War.’

‘Keen on brown bread and vegetables – don't expect too much in the way of creature comforts.’

‘Brave chap, I am sure you'll find the country air bracing.’

‘And Eleanor comes of good stock, too. Never mind the burst water pipes.’

Aubrey managed to shrug off most of these under a jocular guise. One of his closest friends however, let slip something that would come back to him later.

‘I wouldn't mind the rest of it – only I believe it may be a House of Spirits. Hope you can sleep all right at nights.’

Aubrey laughed at the time. ”

A crowded house party – with more guests on the way. Despite instructions to the contrary, the older part of the house is opened up . . .and something is inadvertently let out, to wreak mild havoc and insanity on the Maydews and their guests. That nasty incident involving Eleanor, followed by unpleasantness over Penny’s dress, and what is it Aubrey can hear, on the outer edge of his dreams?

Hysteria, missed cocktails, and something nasty in the attic.

Snrrip, snrrip. Snip, snap.

Even the rats run away.

A ghost tale, almost not quite long enough to qualify as a novelette, created in celebration of M.R.James’s 150th anniversary.

Exclusive Guest Post

As part of the Haunted House Virtual Tour here is a quick peek into another of the famous houses in ‘mock’ gothic literature (we’re not saying which one it is – you can either guess from reading, or from working out the anagram at the end!)…

‘Mind the step and try not to fall down any cracks,’ advised my host, stepping precariously between the broken up flagstones.
‘I shall indeed…’
Crunch, crinch, plod, plod plod.
A creaking, squealing gate (of course), a great rusty key in a great rusted lock (naturally), and a fearful screeching sound as the one turned in the other – quite ear-spittling.
‘Eh? What?’ asked my host.
‘I said – quite ear-splitting,’ I repeated, hands over ears.
‘Oh, yes – never oiled, acts as something of a deterrent to poachers and trespassers, however. Worth the occasional torture. This way,’ and the impervious host led the way across the uneven ground, up the uneven steps and through a broken doorway into a magnificent courtyard.

Only one wall still stood up to defy the sky in craggy, uneven shape, empty window frames, like eyeless sockets staring vacantly into nothingness.

‘Must have been quite an impressive building, once,’ I commented, taking in the breadth and sweep of the land, dotted with rubble, overgrown piles of bricks and stone quoins.

‘Indeed, I believe it was once. I may even have a print of it somewhere …now, down these steps, and mind the last one …. Yes. Here we are.’

A pile of earth, some shovels and a handsome L-shaped hole confronted us. Two men were kneeling at the base of the hole, brushing away at the soil.

‘Good afternoon, gentlemen. Your colleague has come to give you a hand.’
‘Oh hello, Jameson – you took your time,’ was the jovial response from one of the men, standing up and gesturing at me with his brush.

‘Yes, sorry about that,’ I replied, ‘the train was late, and I had to walk from the station.’
‘Well, now you’re here, there’s an interesting little item here, looks like an oil lamp. And Parker thinks we may have a mosaic as well, so tread careful.’

Our host left us to it and for a couple more hours before the light went we brushed and trowelled and brushed away, occasionally muttering and exclaiming as we picked out bits of terracotta and glass. The dig had been something of a last minute thing, from a  reference Parker came across in the archives, and now he was almost convinced we might be onto the remains of a third century Roman villa. He and Lewitt had been free to start on the dig before me, thereby gaining a whole day’s work. We hoped to clear a good deal more before going public, so everything was kept under wraps for the time being. Nobody apart from our host knew we were there and we only had resources for a few days to complete the whole enterprise.

Once the light began to go, we wrapped our tools up and got ready to leave; there was a thread of yellow pink across the horizon and the trees took on a dark and dreary aspect. The faint breeze which had caused them to rustle was now gone, not even the birds had remained to keep us company. A certain air of desolate eeriness took over and dampened my spirits – and I suspect, my companions, for they were quite taciturn and began to look about them in a nervous way. I attempted to lighten the atmosphere: ‘Bless us, who are you expecting at this hour? Mind, I ate all the sandwiches, we’ll have nothing to offer them!’ At which Lewitt stared around him once again, and Parker grunted. Something was certainly affecting them and they seemed disinclined to stay longer than absolutely necessary after dark.

Once we reached our host’s home and were treated to some wine and cheese, our spirits rose a little – but we none of us referred to the dig, which was unsual.

The following day we were up at crack of dawn, and back at the site with renewed enthusiasm. The weather held, and soon we felt the scorching sun beating on our backs. It was a hot summer and our flasks of lemonade soon emptied. Our chatter remained cheerful and lively until the evening – when again that uncanny silence fell on the trees, the birds – and us. Once more, my colleagues packed up hurriedly as if fearful of being caught there; this was infectious and I made similar haste, questioning our irrational behaviour at the same time. We were a little later than the previous evening, and as we crossed the ruined courtyard leading to the gate, I thought I heard a distant cackle of laughter. I turned my head, and noticed the other two do the same; yet Parker did not stop and walked faster, encouraging us to ‘hurry up, a chap’s appetite needs feeding…’

Again, once back in the house with food and drink and warm lamp light we relaxed once more; the eeriness and uncanny feeling left us completely.

Come the third day, and a series of incidents occurred over the course of the morning and afternoon which caused first Parker then Lewitt to leave the dig; each of them on leaving counselled the others not to work late; Lewitt in particular stressed this as he left me, and even suggested I leave together with him. It was but four in the afternoon, the light was excellent and I had just come across something of particular interest: part of a tile, and the beginnings of what promised to be a complete pitcher. I was in no mind to leave just then; a form of devil-may-care took over and I carried on regardless. I was rewarded for my efforts by recovering the pitcher intact, but the hour was indeed quite late and I discovered not only the last of the light was going but even a full moon was riding high already. I was so cheerful about my find however that I did not notice the silence, or the atmosphere. I even whistled as I packed up; my back was aching and I had thoughts of a hot bath. I could not have been more carefree as I tripped up the old cracked steps and crossed the old ruined courtyard. The greater the shock then, when I stepped forward – into a towering inferno. Flames, high as trees billowed up about me, crashes and groans of timber being wrenched asunder by sheer heat, shrieks and shouts of people, thudding, banging, the running of feet – all of this and – and -  I looked up, bewildered, horrified, and saw silhouetted against the blinding light the figure of a woman at the top of the ruined wall – standing with arms spread out, dress streaming behind her – and next, a fearful laugh – the same laugh I had heard the night before … and she threw herself into the sky.

I could not speak nor shout nor move as the frightful figure sailed down to the ground. Not even when I heard the frightening, sickening thud of a body coming into contact with the cold hard earth. Only when I heard a man’s voice, raised above the sound of crackling fire and crumbling masonry, shouting one word. ‘Earth’ was it? ‘Birth?’ No, it was a woman’s name, surely – Bertha…

How I stumbled out of that nightmare, I do not recall – my next memory is of being grasped by the arms by Lewitt and Parker who, concerned I had not yet returned to the house, had set out again to look for me. ‘And thank goodness we did,’ commented Parker later on, over a very late supper.  Our host nodded. ‘I imagine it was the final fire you saw – the one that destroyed the original building. Legend has it the owner kept a mad woman locked up in one of the upper rooms, and that she escaped one night and set fire to the place. Can’t say I have ever experienced anything myself. Wouldn’t want to, either.’

We went all together the following morning, made our final notes and left by the afternoon train. Parker has written up a paper on the site itself and who knows, there may well be a bigger dig organised next year. I doubt I shall take part in it myself, though …..
