What We're Up To

I don't take my naked belly pictures (just the belly is naked, as I've posted previously) that often because they're not that fun to take, so this one, hooray for us all, is clothed :)  Oh and I cut my hair.  Yay.

Rachel Kimsey
Big news: My baby's name is Georgia Rachel Kirton.  I got sick of thinking about the middle name because thinking about it led me to talk about it and after a while I was so sick of my own voice that I just decided to let it happen.  Sure enough- maybe 2 weeks ago- it happened.  I love the name Rachel.  A childhood friend named her first daughter Rachel and I was so jealous that she thought of it.  I have a grand aversion to name doubling, even middle names, but this one seems fine, as my wonderful amazing sister's name happens to be the Rachel, and its a first name to middle name double.  For a while I was really looking for a "G" middle name that made the soft "G" sound because I'm going to call her Gigi anyway, but gave up.  Nothing was coming.  Then I was driving down the street, home from the grocery store, I think, and thought of the name Rachel, that I was so jealous (years ago, long before I even met Hyrum) that Melanie had named her daughter something so timeless and beautiful, and that it was my sister's name, and it was done.

Other news: I'm so overwhelmed by my reading list and all the stuff I need to have ready to introduce an infant into my life that I'm doing all of the other stuff that I've wanted to get done that is less important. :D  Hyrum and I tore apart our bathroom last year and Hyrum spent 4 months re-plumbing and pouring concrete and soldering sealing and tiling and all the wood work that had to go under it all to move our shower and put a steam unit in it.  IT IS AMAZING.  I helped tear the original bathroom down, and he did everything else to get it back up and running.  My only job was to put a vanity in the place where our little shower had been before.  One year later, I did something to accomplish that.  Its not done.  But I only have 1 step left- mirror.

My vanity where our original shower was

I also decided that Georgia's room needs to be a series of huge projects.  For me, they are huge.  But I learned from pinterest.com that I can do anything I want to do.  I was looking online for a low wide dresser for the baby room and found a BEAUTIFUL dresser that had been refurbished for $225.  I asked Hyrum if I could go pick it up, and got the go-ahead, but with hesitance- "If you really think that's the best option."  Thank heaven for my roommates.  Sean and Ashley live with us (my brother and his wife), and Ashley hooked me up with Pinterest before her wedding.  It took me a few months to really get into it, but thanks to her, I've been able to figure out how to do stuff that I've always said I could and should do.  She looked at the dresser that I wanted, and said "...That's pretty... but..." Me: "I could totally do that myself, right?" Ashley: "Exactly."  I went on pinterest and searched "painted dresser" and decided on the themes that I liked the best.

So I found a really beautiful old dresser for $75, marked down from $150, that was in awesome shape, and Sean went with me to pick it up.  Primed, painted (Cozumel Aqua), and sanded and stained the top black.  And now I own the most loudly colored dresser ever to be featured in a baby's room.  The theme is peacocks and animal prints, and with the rug my mom got us for Christmas, this dang baby room CANNOT HELP itself from being THE COOLEST baby room that ever was.

The neatest thing about this dresser is the brief history that I got from the previous owner when I picked it up.  She grew up in a military family and told me that this dresser was much older than her (she's probably 30).  They family had had this dresser for her entire life, and it had been moved from the U.S., to Italy, to Alaska, and everywhere in between.  It had stood up to the abuse from her family and intercontinental moves, and the only reason she was selling it was because it was too heavy for her to move down into her basement in Roy, Utah.  I laughed because it had traveled so far, and now a trip down the stairs was getting it the boot.  She's a small lady- eating disorder small- and said "well the military always moved it for us before!"  And now its in my baby's room. :)

Its so old, though, that the drawer pulls are antique sized, and I can't find anything, at any price, that fits the holes that are already in the drawers.  There was one pull missing when I picked it up or I'd use the originals.  I'm not good at measuring and making sure things are really positioned right when it comes to drilling and things like that so I'm afraid to drill new holes in the drawers.  Thank the heavens for husbands.  Especially mine.  I mean, I don't mean to brag, but... you get the idea.

My future Before
and After

My next projects are... many.  I'm sick of how yellow my great room is, so I'm going to paint my cabinets, hearth, and probably my table and chairs, I need more storage so I'm going to figure out how to put a wall of cabinets under my tv, update and expand my shelves, oh yeah, make art for Georgia's room, update the poorly chosen toilet paper dispenser in the main floor bathroom, and the broken hand towel holder, paint the other dresser and end table for the baby room, put up the drapes in my room, and put up a side board table and pictures.

See, we're doing this whole thing- having a baby- at home.  And to feel comfortable with people (the midwives) being in my space, it has to be decorated.  I'm not going crazy, but I may have to wait on the hearth and cabinets and shelves and stuff 'til after all of the more immediately necessary projects are done.

Ooh and the other night we had dinner with Hyrum's cousin Richard and his wife Jenny.  We saw them at another cousin's wedding last week and realised we haven't seen their house and they've lived there for years.  So we had pizza and I brought a passover cake- or gluten free cake, or flourless cake, or celiac friendly cake, or incredible rich and delicious cake- for dessert.  I topped it with chocolate ganache and brought sliced strawberries and fresh whipped cream to go with it.  YUM.  I've wanted to try the recipe for years!  The best part of the evening though, was being inspired by all of the STUFF that Jenny has painted and updated in their house!  PAINT WOOD PANELING!  PAINT AN UGLY OLD BRICK HEARTH!  AMAZING!

I will post pictures of that all when I check it off.  The key to getting that done, however, seems to be placing priority on anything else, so I can neglect that and get my less important projects off the ground.
