Collision

Image
I was in a traffic collision today.  I mean, it was certainly an accident, but there was fault (watch Hot Fuzz for your own good, and an explanation of the distinction).  The guy was exiting the freeway onto Foothill Boulevard headed up toward the U and never even tapped his breaks before he slammed into me, as I was slowing down for a red light.  I remember what I was thinking at every mili-moment of the accident.      In the very beginning, as my head was flying back toward my headrest and my eyes were instinctively shut, I was confused and didn't know what was happening.  Then my head smashed into the headrest and I was thrust forward.  I realized we had been hit by the time my eyes opened, and by "we", I mean me and my perfect, squishy, soft, and angelic little baby in the middle of the back seat, and I was terrified that she had been hurt, but knew that babies often do better in car accidents than adults because of their awesome car seats.  Then I saw the whit

Did It Myself Dressers

I finally finished these yesterday :)  I started them when I was pregnant and nesting, and my kid is now 6 months old, but they are done. See before and afters... in earlier posts... I tried to do a link but it just wants to do the same page.  You're not going to look, are you?  Ah well.  I'd post befores but I can't find them.  Still, pretty wicked dressers, eh?  Yay!

I Totally Just Made Lip Balm

Pinterest made me do it . That is the name of one of my boards on Pinterest .  I created it to motivate me to do all of the stuff on my Do It Myself board.  I added a few things to it once that I actually did, but I haven't added to it in a WHILE.  Today, I get to add to that board. :) I made lip gloss.  I got the recipe on Pinterest from this blog. She gives wonderful directions and includes awesome pictures for the step-by-step.  Its really easy though. I have a huge tub of coconut cooking oil that my mother-in-law gave me when she was on a coconut-stuff kick.  When I saw that one of the ingredients was a way to use the stuff in that tub, I was all, "Yep."  The coconut oil is great because it has sun protection properties and it smells like heaven.  Anyway, I'm new to this so I took almost all of my information from her- I'm just adding my pictures to Pinterest to boost my ego. The first thing she says on her blog is that she has already done

Glitter Girl's Goings On

And so begins the age old anxiety- "Is my kid really going to be the genius I think she is?" We got this little handout from our pediatrician that has a bunch of physical skills to check off to see, developmentally, if your kid is keeping up.  As of her 2 month appointment, G was WAY ahead.  We're talking pushing up during tummy time above a 45 degree angle, talking like ka-rayzee...  But I got an email from ParentsConnect.com this morning about how my 3 month old "is learning to turn over".  Wull what if she isn't...trying to do that...?  I'm pretty sure she's fine, but I was enjoying the idea that she was just light years ahead of the developmental expectations of her age group.  My bubble has not burst- my kid is a genius.  She just likes the places I put her. *update* She is now trying to roll over.  Crisis averted. Oh and she's self soothing like a champ.  Not at the moment , mind you, but the exception proves- is proving- the rule.

Georgia Rachel Kirton

I'm not sure if its too soon or too late for this, but she is sleeping and I am awake so... now seems to be when I have if I'm going to do it at all.  You've probably heard this from my own mouth, but I've been planning on recording it this way so this is about how it went. I've been reading blogs of home birth mothers since I decided I would be one.  The first one I read was beautiful.  The mother is a photographer and an avid blogger with a loyal following.  Her labor was 48 hours long, and she had these incredible photos of her laboring by candlelight in her bathtub (her hubs and midwives took over photography as she was laboring).  Others I read were also photographers and bloggers, and women with unique quirkily styled houses that they had decorated to reflect their hipster color palates and took piles and piles of pictures of their baby rooms decorated with "vintage pieces" so down to the tiniest details as to make other baby rooms just look st

Today's Projects

Image
Today I went to Home Depot and wandered around for over an hour trying to pick up all of the things I need for all of the silly projects that I've decided I must do but never do because making a trip to Home Depot just for glue is ridiculous.  After that hour and 15 minutes or so, I left with a lot of stuff, but not the paint primer I went for.  Sigh.  So I dropped everything else off at home, grabbed my wallet (I have a gift card to HD) and left again, this time for Walmart, where primer is cheaper. This is what I was priming.  Hooray!  Now, I maybe should have waited until I have some finished product pictures but I was just so dang excited.  One of the things I DID get at HD was antique gold accent paint for the dresser and bedside table- both for Georgia's room.  So I dragged the dresser down our stairs and hefted the (significantly weighty) bedside table into the garage and primed away.  This was perhaps ill-advised.  But my baby websites insist that weight

What We're Up To

I don't take my naked belly pictures (just the belly is naked, as I've posted previously) that often because they're not that fun to take, so this one, hooray for us all, is clothed :)  Oh and I cut my hair.  Yay. Rachel Kimsey Big news: My baby's name is Georgia Rachel Kirton.  I got sick of thinking about the middle name because thinking about it led me to talk about it and after a while I was so sick of my own voice that I just decided to let it happen.  Sure enough- maybe 2 weeks ago- it happened.  I love the name Rachel.  A childhood friend named her first daughter Rachel and I was so jealous that she thought of it.  I have a grand aversion to name doubling, even middle names, but this one seems fine, as my wonderful amazing sister's name happens to be the Rachel, and its a first name to middle name double.  For a while I was really looking for a "G" middle name that made the soft "G" sound because I'm going to call her Gigi anyway
