Just pure elegance in stitches

Leah Van Horn shares photos of her work to inspire our senses today. Look at the cheerful spring-like colors and variety of interesting stitches. Leah uses Kreinik threads in her purse designs, and you can see more here: justpureelegancepurses.com or on Instagram @justpureelegance.

"One of my grandmothers was an extraordinary crocheter and did table linens, but she was not an embroiderer or a quilter," Leah shares. "I have always loved stitching, fabric, threads and antique buttons etc."  Leah combines vintage frames and embroidery to create one-of-a-kind purses. Kreinik metallic threads are a lovely contrast in texture and light to her mainstay fiber, silk ribbon. The blend creates visual interest—a beautiful mix that we find in life itself.

We asked Leah a few questions about her embroidery work:

Q: When did you start stitching?

A: I have had a sewing needle in my hands since I was about eight years old!  (I’m a young 65 now) starting out with regular embroidery, then counted cross stitch, then beginning in 1980 I began a quilting journey that lasted until the early 2000’s.  At that point I had a burning desire to go back to embroidery but wanted to focus on silk ribbon because of the beautiful dimensional aspect of it. I discovered Kreinik threads about 8 years ago and have been incorporating it into my needle work whenever I can now.

Q: Do you have any tips on stitching with Kreinik threads?

A: I used the black glittery thread on my fish and it was very curly coming off the spool, making it not want to lay flat when I stitched. I finally ran it through my hair straightener tool (which heated it up a bit) and that took the curl out without damaging the thread.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

A: For me as an artist, inspiration comes from many places, nature, my gardens, Pinterest, bird watching, my photography etc. since I mostly stitch with silk ribbon I am constantly playing with new stitches or threads to see what will happen with them. I play around all the time. I have a small library of stitch books and if I am in a jam I go onto YouTube and watch tutorials regarding stitching. That helps a lot too!

Important production and color news

To our valued stitchers, creators and fly fishing enthusiasts,

2020 has been the most out-of-the-ordinary year of our collective lives. The pandemic created regulations and upheaval on every level: economic, medical, social, personal, national, international. It has been devastating for people and small businesses. Kreinik is still here because of two factors: 1. You; and 2. Our staff. Strengthened by your patience and their dedication, Kreinik is determined to get us all through 2020 and thriving in 2021 in the best possible way.

With that goal, we are enacting an extraordinary—but temporary—measure. For the next eight weeks, we are only making the top 60 to 80 colors in Kreinik #4, #8, and #12 Braid lines.

We know that limiting the colors in production sounds drastic, and some people won’t be able to get some colors temporarily, but we need to catch up. We need to dedicate all production machines to in-demand colors. Shops need to get the most popular colors restocked. Our staff needs some pressure relief. This will do it.

The limit on color production does not apply to silk threads, Blending Filament, Medium #16 Braid, Canvas #24 Braid, 1/8” Ribbon, 1/16” Ribbon, Ombre, Micro Ice Chenille, Facets, or Japan Threads. It applies only to Very Fine #4 Braid, Fine #8 Braid, and Tapestry #12 Braid for the next eight weeks.

What can you do if you are in desperate need of a color that we aren’t producing right now? There are several solutions:
  • Many retailers have stock of these “odd” colors, so search online, or contact us for names of shops that do mail order.
  • Join one of the needlework or fly fishing groups on Facebook, Reddit, or other social media, and ask if someone has the color you need. Many people are willing to trade, give, or sell. There are also retailers in these groups who may see the post.
  • Consider substituting with a similar color in the line. In the next week, we will share on our social media several conversion lists that may help.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding. When we are caught up, we will return to making our full color line. While our facility is closed to the public right now, we hope to restore factory tours and reopen the outlet store in 2021.

Regards,
Doug Kreinik

Update from Doug Kreinik

To our customers and stitchers worldwide,

We apologize for the length of time it is taking to fill orders right now. We were closed during the early days of the pandemic, which put us behind, and now we have a smaller crew due to the pandemic. We are shipping as fast as possible, running our thread-making machines 15+ hours a day, with staff working overtime. If we exhaust our staff, they could become ill, so we are watching out for them.

We are also being cautious about hiring extra staff because we do not know where they have been and if they have been exposed to COVID. One sick person and we would have to close, and that is what we are protecting against. So, yes, it is taking longer, but we are producing, and plan to stay that way by being careful.

We are working hard and shipping times are improving with each week. Thank you so much for your patience. Stay safe and healthy.

Regards, Doug Kreinik

New! Supersoft elastic for making masks

Kreinik is excited to announce that we are now making elastic, which is in great need during this mask-wearing time. We have two types: flat elastic (in two sizes) and round elastic (in one size).

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, the Kreinik factory had to close per government mandate. As we all quarantined and started making masks, we quickly saw a need for elastic. Doug Kreinik and our chief engineer started modifying one of our ribbon-making machines and re-rigged it to make elastic. Our first customer was the West Virginia National Guard. We now have it available on our website. As we build up stock, we will be able to sell wholesale on a larger level. We use a wonderful nylon/poly blend that is softer on people's ears.

Details:
  • poly/nylon blend (no latex)
  • cone contains 50 yards
  • 3 to 1 stretch, so you don't have to use as much on a mask
  • flat elastic comes in 1/8" and 1/4" widths
  • round elastic is about 3/32" diameter

Update on thread production

The Kreinik factory is back operating, with modifications designed for the safety of our staff (distancing, sanitizing, shifts to reduce number of people in the building at a time). Since we were closed for a month, and shipped out everything we had on the shelves before closing, it will take at least a month to get threads made and shelves restocked—especially the most popular colors like gold, silver, pearl etc.

We ask for your patience during this time and appreciate your business and your interest in our threads. We know that many retailers are out of Kreinik threads, but we are working as hard and as quickly as we can to get orders out to everyone.

The outlet store is still closed and we are not allowing any visitors to the factory. The outlet store tent sale (usually in October) will not be held this year.

Stay safe and healthy, everyone!

Seeing red?

We have heard from some stitchers that 003L Robot Red may bleed onto light colored fabrics when washed. We suggest switching to one of our other red shades, or only using it in dark-colored designs. It's a great color, but not worth ruining a project.

It can still be used in fly fishing; look for small, mid-size and bulk skeins of Kreinik Flash for making lures. It also comes in our piping for making bodies.

Dye lot change coming to Kreinik metallic thread color 015

Plan accordingly! Kreinik color 015 Chartreuse is going to have a slight change in dye lot during the next production run in 2020. If you are mid project, make sure you have enough of the current dye lot.

A few things you can do to find old spools:

  1. Contact needlework shops to see if they have old stock
  2. Contact stitchers through Reddit, Facebook groups or other social media to see if they have an old spool and are willing to part with it or swap for something

Speaking of dye lots...

We have had a flurry of stitchers calling in a panic lately, mid project, looking for old dye lots. Sometimes we can find an old spool, but more often than not, we can't match it. Always, always, always make sure you have enough of a current dye lot — in any thread, yarn or even fabric — when you start your project.

This is especially important if you:

  • purchase needlework threads from a discount store or second-hand store
  • inherit someone's stitching stash
  • purchase from a shop going out of business or other clearance sale
  • buy needlework supplies from an estate sale
All manufacturers try to keep dye lots as close as possible, but sometimes it's inevitable. Minimize any stress by making sure you have enough to finish your project.

Make 2020 your year of beauty and inspiration with this calendar

The 2020 Crazy Quilt Calendar is now available, and it's an easy way to grace your refrigerator, craft room, or office space with beautiful needlework.

Popular cross stitch designer Pam Kellogg is a long-time crazy quilter as well. She owns and publishes Crazy Quilt Quarterly Magazine which is devoted entirely to the art of contemporary crazy quilting and textile art. It's published four times a year and to go along with that, she publishes a yearly Crazy Quilt Calendar. "Although the calendar isn't cross stitch," Pam says, "it's a beautiful publication perfect for anyone who enjoys any type of needlework or quilting." We agree! It also makes a lovely Christmas present for any quilter or needleworker in your life.

Pam has designed free cross stitch patterns for Kreinik over the years, and often uses our sparkly threads in her crazy quilt designs featured on her blog. Metallics have long been used in both needlework techniques to offer light, texture, dimension...to make a design more visually appealing and interesting. The 2020 calendar features Kreinik in several of the designs. Take a close look at the photos and be inspired to try different threads and stitches to liven up your own embroidery designs.

A quick interview with this inspiring designer

Q: Did you use any Kreinik threads in the projects?

A: Yes, I adore Kreinik threads!  The large roses on the cover design is done in Broiderie Purse. It's outlined entirely in Kreinik #8 Braid using the chain stitch. Some of the other designs include #4 or #8 Braids as well.
Q: Which Kreinik threads are your favorites for crazy quilting?
A: My favorites are #4 and #8 Braids but I also enjoy using the ribbons.  And I always use Blending Filament for spider webs. They're fine and delicate like a real spider web and give a hint of sparkle. They make the web look like there's dew on it!
Q: How did you get into crazy quilting?
A: I started in 2000 when a friend of mine sent me a magazine that featured some contemporary crazy quilt blocks. I was so taken with it and immediately saw how I could include some cross stitch and charted work into crazy quilt pieces. I had no idea what I was doing when I started. But as with anything, the more I did it, the more it all made sense to me. I was never good at "free handing" my fancy stitches so I started using waste canvas and my own charted borders to create my seam treatments. This gave me perfectly spaced stitches every time! I've put 3 books together on using waste canvas for seam treatments.

What I enjoy most about crazy quilting is the freedom to use every needlework technique that I know how to do! There are no limits and since I have an affinity for anything sparkly and glittery, it's the perfect canvas for Kreinik metallic threads and lots of beads, sequins, vintage jewelry pieces and anything else I can sew on!

Q: How can people purchase the 2020 Crazy Quilt Calendar?
Q:. How can people purchase your cross stitch designs?
A: My cross stitch designs are available in many needlework retail stores as well as at the above links. Both professionally printed pattern leaflets as well as Instant Digtial PDF Download files.

About those Kreinik spool labels

We hear you: It's really annoying when the labels come off the Kreinik thread spools. We're here to assure you: we're working on a solution.

Why do the labels fall off?

  1. Most of the spool end is hollow. We were forward-thinking back in the 1980s with our snap-spool mechanism design, creating a spool with a lip that opens so you can wrap the thread end around it, close it, and never have flyway thread ends tangling up your thread drawer. However, that unique design comes with a price: a hollow spool. There's not really a lot of space for a label to grab onto, not a huge area for sticking. These hollow spools are also required for our thread-winding machines. In hindsight, we would have created spools in which we could print info right on them. But for now we're stuck, no pun intended, with the spool design.
  2. The glue may not be aggressive enough. We print only a small amount of labels at a time to keep the glue from deteriorating in storage, and keep those in a temperature controlled environment. However, humidity levels can affect the hardiness of adhesive. Also storage conditions and weather conditions in shops and homes can affect the glue.
  3. Kreinik labels are applied by hand. A few years ago our label machine broke down, and we were unable to fix it. Since then, every single spool has been hand labeled. You definitely get the personal touch from us here at Kreinik. However, perhaps every once in awhile the labels aren't attached well enough.

So what can be done?

The biggest effort right now is fixing our label machine. Our engineer Martin is actively working to get it going again. The machine uses pressure to push the labels on, and it will be a stronger bond than hand labeling. We are also investigating other adhesive options for our pre-printed labels to make sure we have the strongest bond available.

Other stitchers recommend...

In the meanwhile, if you have spools with labels about to come off, look for some small baggies at craft stores (in the jewelry section), drug stores (for single use medicine storage) or office supply stores. Some stitchers use Floss Away storage bags. One stitcher tucks the label inside the spool. We suggest using double-sided tape or your own glue to reattach (tuck some cotton balls or scraps of something inside the spool to give a greater area for the adhesive to 'grab').

We appreciate your comments and your patience. Feel free to contact us at any time if you have questions or concerns about Kreinik products—or if you need help identifying a color that has lost its label. We also have a downloadable color chart for quick reference, or an actual thread color card with actual thread samples.

Thank you for using Kreinik to make your creative ideas come to life!

Start your Halloween stitching now

Tis the season! It may be summer outside here in the United States, but now is the time to get ready for Halloween—at least with your stitching projects. Pick up Hands On Design's new Scary Apothecary series for small, quick, fun-to-stitch-and-display projects. The designs have that clever Halloween sense of humor and a subtle sparkle thanks to Kreinik threads.

Designer Cathy Habermann just released the next three designs in the series:

  • Cackle Lozenges "Shriek well"
  • Coffin Paint "After-lifetime warranty"
  • Cauldron Cleaner "With enhanced spell check"

There will be nine designs in the entire series; you can stitch one, two, four, more, less or all. Another thing we love about this series: easy finishing. Cathy has supplied instructions for how she finished them, and you can do it at home. Don't use that as an excuse to wait until October to start stitching these designs though—get the patterns, threads and fabric now. Work on one a month and you'll be on your way to having your custom Halloween decorations ready. The designs make great gift-swaps too.

The series uses nine Kreinik colors in Very Fine #4 Braid: 011HL, 242HL, 5510, 5815, 5013, 5535, 5720, 5545, 027. Print this list and use it to shop at your favorite needlework source, or online at www.kreinik.com

Road trip time! Visit Homestead Needle Arts in Michigan

Put this stop on your needlework shop travel list: Homestead Needle Arts, 8185 Holly Road, Suite 4, Grand Blanc, Michigan, https://www.homesteadneedlearts.com/
Put this shop on your summer travel list: Homestead Needle Arts in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Doug recently gave his famous thread talk here and reported, "It's a fabulous shop." Get to know owner Theresa Swiecicki and learn about the shop in our interview below.

Doug Kreinik, the very tall Theresa Swiecicki (owner of Homestead Needle Arts) and Kreinik Creative Director Dena Lenham
Q: How long have you had the shop?
A: I have owned Homestead Needle Arts for over 15 years.  The shop has been in business for over 45 years in Grand Blanc, Michigan.  I live more than 30 miles from the shop but kept it here as it's always been in Grand Blanc.

I've always been interested in fiber arts and can remember lacing cardboard back when I was young and thinking it was the most fun thing ever!  In my early teens I learned quite a lot from books.  In my 20's I took an occasional class at two different shops near my home.  One of the earliest needlepoint pieces I stitched was the chart Ashes of Roses by Fancy Work and Fantasies and it won the Blue Ribbon at the Michigan State Fair.  I was addicted!

In late 2003 I found out that the owner of Homestead Needle Arts was closing the store and I inquired about purchasing it as I was unemployed at the time.  So I bought my own job!

Homestead is one of the shops that fulfills orders placed on the Kreinik website, www.kreinik.com. Theresa is terrific about getting Kreinik to you, whether it's for fly fishing, needlework, crafting, quilting, etc.
Q: Which Kreinik threads do you carry?
A: I carry Kreinik braids in Sizes 8, 12 and 16 and some of the more popular colors in 1/16" ribbon.  One of my favorite things to tell a customer is "I can order that for you" because I know how frustrating it can be to want a particular thread and be unable to obtain it.

Stitchers had a fun and inspiring time when Doug Kreinik visited the shop for his famous Thread Talk
Q: Do you have classes at the shop?
A: I teach a two hour class twice a week at the shop and am currently teaching an all day class one Saturday a month.  The two hour classes encourage the student to bring in any needlepoint piece and learn at their own pace and at the Saturday class we're all working on the same painted canvas.

I also host teachers and my favorite one by far is Kathy Fenchel.  She teaches here monthly and her students have become very proficient.  It's difficult to get a seat in her class due to her popularity!  I have hosted other national teachers here at the shop over the years.

Other fun events I've held include learning to paint your own canvas, simple ornament finishing, experiencing different silk threads, Getaway Weekends, and of course, the  Homestead Needle Arts Customer Garage Sale where customers sell their no-longer-loved needlepoint supplies; we've had this event for over 30 years.  I also host a monthly stitch-in where a group of us will spend the entire day stitching and socializing.  That's a popular event!

We'll be right over for our free kisses, sweet Skye!
Q: We have heard you often have a very special visitor to the shop...
A: On occasion, my golden retriever Skye will come to work with me but as she is still very young and she demands a lot of attention from people.  My last dog Star was so well behaved that she came every day and even had her favorite customers!

Discontinued Kreinik Thread Colors

We hate to discontinue any thread color, but sometimes it is required due to manufacturing problems (like, we can't get the raw material to transform it into your favorite Kreinik threads). Back in 2014 we posted a list of discontinued colors, then a reminder list with conversion suggestions in 2017. Every week, however, we get inquiries from stitchers, shops and designers saying "I didn't know that color was discontinued." So we thought this would be the perfect time to post it again.

We suggest printing it, folding it up and keeping it with your thread stash. Even better, add a mark to the labels on spools of discontinued colors; that way you can keep them but know they can't be replaced. It's spring cleaning time, perfect for rearranging your Kreinik stash and making note of colors no longer in the line-up. You will find the list of discontinued colors below.

Great tips for stitchers who love buying thread stashes on Ebay, at estate sales, and Goodwill/Salvation Army stores:

  1. The thread dye lot most likely has changed. Mark those threads some how so you know and won't get caught running out mid project.
  2. Some of those threads may be discontinued. Google and contact the manufacturer to double check before you use them in a project (and end up needing more).
