Northface 2012 - 50km ?

Northface 2012 – 50km ?

When I signed up for Northface 2010, I told myself this is the first and last time. I just want to participate and go through the experience, knowing how tough the race encompasses.

Fastward to Northface 2012, I did took part of the race on 13 Oct 2012. Someone signed up for me, so I am officially didn’t signed up as I said to myself few years back.

How I ended up running? Well, it is a long story behind the twists and turns. I have to be silenced if I reveal too much here.

As expected, it has been mentally and physically challenging to go through the weeks of training to gear up for the event. 2 x 40km has been planned, I did complete only once. Did a few 30km+ runs. Shins have not fully recovered since KL marathon 2012, add on to the challenge. Peak run 1 month prior to the event. Thinking back now, I think this is the right strategy to adopt.

Unlike the last Northface which have several issues confronting me, this year approach has been better managed. Though with niggling body aches which might flare up during the run; I am fresh and ready for the run.

Strategy: Walk the incline slope, run the down slope. Try to run the flat portion(if possible). Keep a minimum 6km distance per 1 hour. Prefer 6.5km to be on the safe side. Finished around 8-8:30hrs.

Date: 13th Oct 2012
Event: Northface 50km
Venue: Macrtichie Reservoir
Time: 6:45am

I have reached race site around 5:30am. Get the usual parking lot and get myself prepare. Many others are there and we chat, joke along.

Race start on the dot(6:45am), and off we head off on our journey. Unlike training when we run together, this is OTOT. I started carefully and gingerly behind. Not putting too much effort and keep it easy. Shunyin and Angela are running around me until rifle range road. That is the last I seem them.

Meet up with Jancy and Vincent at Ranger station. She has a fall and as usual(blab blab blab). Nothing serious just cuts and bruises. We ran close to each other to the end. Strangely but true.

Reached 10km point at 1:29hr(pace is on target). Miss out on replenishment of the water bag at 2x water points. The past experience starts to alarm bells and I have to silently cursing myself.

Reached 3rd water point(which I didn’t expect) near one of the rear carpark in Bukit Timah area. Phew, quickly top it up. Still feeling okay.

Bypass the 4th water point and head straight to the Petir road whereby our supporters are waiting. It has been nice to meet familiar faces. Grant a cup of gassy 100 plus(not a good idea) and grab some fruits.

Reached 20km point in 2:40hr(pace is ahead of target). Felt strange that I actually gained timing! I am going at an easy pace, shouldn’t be that fast. Anyway, distance marker might not be accurate. Just run!

Keeping a clear and focus mind, slow moving ahead. Keep telling myself, the body is okay, just relax and move along. Reached Mandai road junction and surprise to see Ray and Joanne. The slacker really turns up! I grab a very refreshing energy drink in a pouch! If it is the last 10km, I wouldn’t mind a beer, but not at this stage, whereby the fun about to start!

Cross the road and head into Arsama. Meet up with Cher, Voon Ho and Tiwazz along Mandai main road. Grab some grapes and keep on moving!

Topped up waterbag to the rim at the 5th water point and grab a packet of energy yummies ! Cannot take risk going inside, this is going to be the make/break point!

Time check, 3:30hr heading in. 9 km inside Arsama loop. Gave myself till 5hr to exit Arsama. Weather is hot as expected. Slowly walk and run along,  .256 as the target and slowly moving along.

The familiar training shed, off I go up the slope, whereas many take a breather at the training shed. It wasn’t that tough as expected. Glad that I make it up as to me this is the U-turn point. Happily head downwards and back to Arsama gate.

Hmm…reached the water point at 4:40hr. I am way ahead of my expectation, which is good. Replenish the stock and headed out.

Meet up with the support crew of Cher and the rest at Mandai road side. Saw Terence for the first time as he is heading into Arsama for the 2nd time(he is doing 100km)!. Wish he good luck and I have to push on.

Left groin area starts to show sign of cramping up. Quickly take out heat rub to suppress the pain. I meet up with a foreigner that have good walking speed. I have to run to catch up with him. We leap frog each other until end of Rifle Range road before I ditched him for good.

Nice to see Joanna and the gang along Chestnut Avenue. Took a breather and rested for a while restocking before moving on. In front of the support point is 40km mark, according to Joanna, every runner GPS states it is 37km+. It doesn’t matter anymore as I know I am going to complete it, most probably faster than my previous trip. Total distance based on most GPS is around 48km for the entire race.

So nice to be back at very familiar training ground as I know each twist and turns like the back of my hands. I enjoy the run as I move forward. Caught up with Aili almost at the end of the pipeline(leading to rifle range). She has resort to walking for quite a while now, by looking at her posture. Urging her along as we accompany pace each other till the end.

Kind of disappointed when it seems that the water point near Durain loop seems to be running very low on supplies of water. Fortunately the last water point at the end of Rifle Range road has sufficient to top up my waterbag for the last stretch.

Jancy, Aili and myself slowly jog into MR. Saw a lady foreigner fallen and we help her up. Tough cookie, no injury and she just want to finish. I understand her feeling, there is a point in running that what you care is just to FINISH it. She did a lot of running from my observation and seems to have abundant energy in reserve. At the end 4 of us finish close by each other.

When I reached the last 2.4km mark, I knew the distance is going to way shorter than 50km!

Slow and steady, crossed the finishing line at 7:22hrs. Phew! I make it.

Shun Yin and Angela finished within the cutoff time as well. In fact everyone completed! Cool.

Thinking back, the training in preparation is sufficient. The strategy to peak a month before the event is the right move. I feel fresh before the run and is in control of myself throughout. Most probably i could have push the pace a little faster. Well, run should be enjoyable. Till next time. If there is one.

New Forest Half Marathon 2012

Where is New Forest? If you ask me 6 months ago, I am most probably should be the one asking the question.

In life, if everything goes according to script, it will be monotonous. Just do it, when the opportunity presents itself.

I am on a business trip to Reading UK. Check out any event around the period in England, ask around and it seems New ForestNew Milton, Hampshire England UK is a doable destination.

I was late in registration and couldn’t get into the full marathon, so have to settle for 21km. There are only 2 categories and attracted a couple of thousand runners. It is a small town event. Well it will be enjoyable nevertheless.

Date: 23 September
Time: 9:15am
Distance: 21km
Starting Point: Station Road(South) in New Milton town centre
Route: abundant of rolling slopes(multi-terrain)

It was 6:30am when I head out of the house for a 20mins ride to town given normal road conditional. Event newsletter has indicate that we should put in extra hour more due to high traffic on the road. After a mini scare as GPS bring me to a strange location(or wrong GPS co-ordinate given). It took me 10mins of thinking, before I reach the designated carpark(which is about 150meters away) around 7:05am.

Today is a typical English weather – Wet and Cold. A welcome embrace to me! I have to hide in the car until 8am before heading out to the race site (which is 1mile away on the map), in actual face it is like 250meters away! If my bladder can hold it, I wouldn’t have left the car early and stood in the rain, waiting for the race to start!

Not a stranger to this kind of cold weather. For unknown reason, I totally forgotten to bring my Garmin and gloves for the run! Strange!

With my trusted full length CWX and Northface windbreaker, I am ready to tackle any cold runs! Still remember the day I ran with Raven in this attire in falling snow in Japan a few years back.

It is like a small town fanfare run, at least at the starting point. MC speak like they know everyone in the run. The VIP(Not in formal attire), stand tall on a trunk. One of those truck that carry rubbish in local context. One thing do look different, all runners do look like runners! The last time I experience this is at New York Marathon.

The picture is just before the start. I am standing somewhere behind, since there is no running pen for me! Runners are encourage to stay in the pen with their estimated finishing timing. But the slowest pen is for 61-210 minutes. Where should i stand?

The race start exactly on 9:15am without heavy music, hype up atmosphere. Just GO! Just like a training run. Out of town and the rolling slopes start.

Trying not to get pull away from enthusiastic runners, I control my pace. My right shin is tight. It starts to get worsen as distance is extended. Hoping that the feeling will subside but it didn’t until 5-6miles distance. Which is a worrying sign as what kind of injuries I might sustain.

I just hold on the pace and hope that the water point is somewhere in front for me to take a break and given the shin a stretch or rest. The first water point is slightly after 3miles! Wow, that look like an awful long for first water point. Not that I need water(it is raining and cold), but more on taking the opportunity to access the aching shin.

First water point is served by young children. Lovely children braving the rain to serve water! Bravo to them! Some of the supporters are lovely as well, standing in the rain to cheers us along.

Running through old English roads, animal farms, long meandering routes, beautiful sceneries at times, it is something to cycling in Neo Teo area back home. With the different of English weather( Cold and Wet).

Next water point is close to 6 miles. By then I have to resort to walking up the slopes. First the shin is still giving me the creeping feeling. 2nd the body not use to running non-stop anymore. No point pushing hard.

Saw a couple of fireman in full gear overtook me at this point. Wow impressive. I want to push faster, but with the body condition, I have to hold back.

After miles 9 to miles 10, there is a steepest slope on this stretch. The supporter give us a cup with something sweet(jelly beans?). Just telling us, 3 miles with a climb ahead. I remember a steep climb at the last stretch but at this distance. Hmm…Well, I walked up nevertheless.

Almost reaching the top of the slope, heard a familiar sound. Rima has appeared! She suppose to meet up with me at miles 5-6. Not catching her earlier, I thought that is the end of it, and most probably meet her at the end of the run. One of her Taiwanese tenant is with her and we walk and chat along for a while. Her coughing is very bad. No wonder she can’t run with me or miss a few of her recent signed up runs.

I pressed on with the knowledge I am 3miles out to the end. A good and strong 3 miles as I push on the pace, trying to gain the time lost chatting with both the ladies a while back.

Last 2 miles, I am accompanied by 2 lovely English ladies as we push all the way till the end. I could have pushed harder but didn’t. Just enjoying the last few miles of the run.

Crossing the finishing line in 2:18:11. I expect faster time given the cold weather, but guess the body still has to adapt to running on the road. But did finish strong and feeling good that there is reserve strength not tapped.

At the end got a finisher medal. Grab 4 cups of orange water. 1 biscuit(muslie bar) , 1 bottle of water, 1 small sachet of isotonic energy drink tablets on the way out. There is a silver piece of warmer that given to runner as well. Given the number fingers, it is hard to unwrapped it and even take pictures! Just so difficult to punch the passcode to a sensitive touch screen!

An enjoyable first run in England. A typical Wet and Cold Run.

Next time will join Rima for the kind of run she have experienced. 42km event cost 5 pounds! Food abundant before the start, mid and end point. Runner given a map to find their route, get the map stamped(at certain check point) with no road closure or marshall! A finisher certification is given at the end.

Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2012 - 重出江湖

Date: 24 June 2012
Time: 4:30am
Event: Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2012
Venue: Dataran Merdeka

I need a marathon to align with my goals. It does make it symbolic to come back to the location whereby it started everything many years back.

Although there are quite a few runners coming along for the run with myself, but our distance signed up and hotel we are putting up are different. I make my way to start point alone, like many years back for the first time.

In the running pan, alone as well. Everything looks like in the past. Alone and looking forward to the long run ahead.

On a humid and stuffy 4:30am, the race was flag off. The difference this time(compare to my first)is the introduction of pacers. And the Penguins are not around. Though i spotted Tony cycling along cheering the runners on 2 occasions if i am not wrong.

For almost the first 10km, the pacer(5hr) is well within sighting distance in front. Abit edgy and the kinks start to surface at several spots at the beginning is nothing new. I ran a slow 7min+ pace, felt as though this is my efficient pace. :( Rather slow imo, will need to pick up the pace in training in the future.

Did a pee break around 9km while the lights are still dark. :) Experience slight drizzling which make the run much cooler.

Trying to keep calm while slowly moving forward. Try to go at 7min pace and keep sight of the pacer in front. The target is do under 5hr or keep as close to 5hr as possible.

At 16km point, the Japanese 1-man band has caught up just behind me. I was surprised and tried to put in some effort to push forward. Fortunately that is the last I heard of him, else will be pretty stressed.

Reached first 21km around 2:28hr which is within my expectation to finish in 5hr. By then the pacer group has long disappeared.

I tell myself that I can reach target timing if I keep up with current pace. But it is going to be tight especially knowing it is normally to slow down at the 2nd part of the run.

Trying to maintain pace and target each waterpoints as break points. The water point of 1.6km is very nice IMO, even though I express doubt on the reasoning before the run. When you are just trying to meet next objective- the water point. It is a welcome sight.

The young volunteer is just charming. Some of the beautiful smiles on their face ready make the run more meaningful. The traffic police does a good job, though they are some policemen still needs to do better. The pressure they are under the entire day and handling of them deserve a pat on their back on a job well done.

Reached 30km in 2:29hrs. I know by then I have a good chance of going under 5hrs.

Grinning with renewed confidence, slowly push on. By then the body has shown sign of cramping up. Stop to at some of water points just to put on yokoyoko. The warm and numbing effort is good.

Finally meet up a familiar face in Peter aka Commando. So happy to meet someone familiar! Didn't speak much as do not wish to get distracted, have to move on after 32km point. That is also the last water points that I managed to run nonstop in between. Cramp finally starting to pull up at both the calves at exactly the same spots, so have to stop and give it a reprieve.

Only a short walk and I am back on slowly moving forward. I have a target, I know I can make it if I don't walk for too long.

I was force to walk/jog as the cramps start to show more frequent. Yoyoyoko is constantly applied on the trouble spots. To a certain extend it helps.

Mentally do a lot of calculation on the timing on each Km to make sure I am on target. It is going to be close.

At 37km, with 5km more to go I need to buffer 35mins with 7km pace. I reached 4:24hr. I shouldn't force the pace, just go naturally, if it comes it comes.

The steepest slope in the entire course is at 37.5km, which I am prepare for. After that will be downhill all the way. Even walking up the slope almost cramp up, I have to change my walking style and relieve the overuse muscle group.

Going downhill, have to let it go, but have to jog with a unfamiliar stride. :(

Another climb just before merging with the 10km crowd. Hmm...Siao Leow! Maybe I misinterpret the map!

Have to zigzag for the last 2.5km with the crowd, by then I am aware there is no way I am going to miss the 5hr mark. Stopping from time to time just to make sure I don't cramp up on the last stretch!

Saw Tiwazz and Charlotte just around the finishing chute.

4:59:45, I am back.

Port Macquarie Ironman 2010 – Enver Medal

Port Macquarie Ironman 2010 – Enver Medal

Event: Port Macquarie Australia Ironman
Venue: Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia
Date: 28 March 2010
Distance: 3.8km Swim/180km Ride/42.2km Run

After China Ironman 2008, that most probably could be my last Ironman event. Having an unsuccessful operation shortly after China event and subsequently struggle not to get PW(personal worst) among that few events I have taken part. It has come a rather frustrating period for the past couple of years.

When you get injured, you want to get back at the shortest possible period. I signed up and DNS(Did Not Start) for an Ironman event. Mind is willing, body is weak. I have to rest for a long period or forget about another long distance event.

I took a rest about 11 months. To some this is short, but to myself it is very long. Mind is willing, but I have to force myself to control my emotion. I need a rest to go further.

I have to build up again slowly over in 2009. Taking part in few shorter events(PW most of them!) along the way. When the body condition is much stabilize, the plot to attempt another Ironman has been brewing behind the scene. After much discussion with my Blackie friend and with Enver participation in mind, Port Macquarie Ironman 2010 has been chosen as our attempt to be our 3rd time Ironman finisher.

Preparation for Port Macquarie isn’t much of a problem, as I can draw on the program for the group that is doing Langkawi event about a month earlier. Although on quite a few occasions I have to be out on my own 3am biking alone. It is something I have to do given i have different training preference compare to others. Hills are definitely form a major portion of my training plans.

Fitness has dropped a lot compare to the first Ironman event. Training intensity and time have reduced due to other commitment. I have to do what I can and hopefully enough to complete the event. I am not going to kid myself that this will be a breeze, it is going to be ugly and I have to grind it out on the course IF I am given a chance(HR don’t go North).

Arrival/Preparation in Port Macquarie

After I arrived in Port Macquarie, we had a run, bike and swim sessions to get the system ready.
The weather is good, just nice for a tan on mid 20’s. It will be ideal if it stay within 10’s but that is good enough for me.

Run workout is okay, have an understanding of the sloppy side of the run course. To and fro 7km to the left hand side of the event location is totally FLAT. To and fro 7km to the right hand side of the event location is full of people(along CBD area) and 2 small "speed humps" await. This should be well within my scope.

Bike is challenging. 3 loop of 60km. A to and fro 30km. First 10km is sloppy. It is challenging. 2nd 10km is FLAT. It should be fast, if no head wind! Last 10km start to get bumpy again, but not as bad as the first 10km. Our training bike ride only ends on first 10km. Phew, it is going to be challenging, hopefully, the other 20km is more decent.

Wetsuit swim along the bay. A 2 loop course. Calm water and some under current on certain part of the route. Should be a decent course, from the many I have gone through. The swim “demon” make a visit. I find it difficult to breath, a bit panic and feeling uncomfortable. I don’t know why I am feeling this. I am not afraid of water nor the depth of it. It is scary and something I don’t enjoy for the few times it happen.

My chest hurts. More like my heart hurts. Seems like it has been punched and bruise. Whenever you touch it, i feel the sight pain. I couldn’t sleep that well, maybe the timezone, maybe Enver disturbance. I am worry and maybe pre race anxiety.

It’s Show Time

Being the slow swimmer, I was given a yellow cap and line up at the last corral. It is a deep water start. It seems like the announcer just announced 3 more minutes to start, when the canon went off! There are still many swimmers on the shore! I was informed later, that many swimmers jumped the gun and the organizer decides to start the race promptly. The race begins.

I slowly breast stroke forward, trying to stay calm and relax while many swimmers just zoomed past me. Within a few minutes, again I have difficulties breathing and get a bit hyperventilating. I have to relax and swim even slower. Try to distract my mind from the task on hand. Looking around, it seems that a few swimmers are suffering the same as myself. Swim a few strokes, come up and thread waters for a while before continue again. Even then, they did distance further ahead from myself. I keep looking at the safety for the kayak as I swim past each one and look at their face and expression. I wonder are they thinking why this crazy swimmer using breast stroke in the race?

Slowly I recovered and swam leisurely and keep telling myself to have fate in my own ability. I did enough training and know my pace. I am going at training pace/effort and couldn’t go worst than in training. Before I completed the first loop of the course, I was lapped by the front swimmers. Well that isn’t too bad I tell myself. I gained confidence that I am not really way off my usual pace and I am feeling great. Just that the rest of the swimmers are just too fast.

It was breast stroke most of the way, but I have to alternate freestyle in the middle from time to time as in training. I know freestyle glide better through the water, especially in wetsuit, but I keep remind myself that I have to follow my training. Don’t be too clever, it is a long way to go…just being a boring person doing the mundane things in life and complete the swim before 2 hours. The cut off for the swim is 2:15hr. I have no ideal why it isn’t 2:20hr, as per norm.

On the 2nd loop back on the return portion, finally I get to see the pink kayaker(which follow the slowest swimmer) at the opposite direction. Phew, at least still have someone much slower than myself. Eventually I get out of the water in 1:31hr. Which is the same timing as what I did for Busselton. That is a good start and glad that 1/3 of the race has completed.

Transition T1

I walk up the shore, grab the bag and head into the tent. A helper immediately jumped onto myself and helps me to pull out my wetsuit. Thanks mate! I take my time, enjoy the experience and get out of the tent within 10mins.

The Long Ride

Amid many cheers along the town area, I get into the ride pretty fast. Trying to chase after shortleg and see if I can catches her down over the course. Seems that the speedo is not working again. Well, just kind of fate that it don’t work once again. Just have to go with the feeling which might be a good sign.

Saw all our supporters along the road(which we have marked out earlier) as I left the town. Enver is among them. Cool!

The first 10km is hilly(apart from the CBD area). I keep playing with the gears as I gone through slope up and down. Along Mathew Flinders, the elite is making their return(1st loop). Next 10km is mostly flat. Have to head down on aero and try to make up the time lost on the hilly portion. I keep looking for sign of wind direction, but it didn’t show any and without speedo, I have no ideal of the pace I am going. The last 10km should be considered as typical Aussie highway, but to me, it is up and down again non stopped. The slope is definitely not as steep as the 1st third of the route. The ass starts to hurt(Ouch!) and it will get bad from there onwards. It still has a long way to go! Reached the first U-turn at 1:12hr. Hmm…okay…let see how long does the first loop take to have a better feel overall on how much time is needed on the bike session.

Given my previous experience, 1 bottle of water for 30km is fine. It was kind of sharp turn and troublesome and I delayed the first bottle pick up till 40km. Gatorade couldn’t have taste so cool and refreshing! Alas, it is ½ to 2/3 fill up! After a few mouthfuls, it is like almost empty. Hmm… I have to rethink of the strategy.

The elite overtook shortly after 40km mark. Slowly goes onto aero position whenever possible and peddle forward. Back to Mathew Flinders again, amid the cheering of crowd on the steepest slope of the entire route, I manage to ride non-stop up. Phew!

Get back into town and spotted our supporter again lining up on the route is a good feeling. Finally complete the first loop in 2:30hr. Based on this timing, I should be looking at under 8hrs for the total 3 loops.

The contact len on the left eye, after a few irritating moments on the first loop decide to pop out at the town area. With so many people cheering you onwards, it is quite embarrassing to stop. So I continue on to find a quieter place to stop and make the adjustment. Shortly after passing by our supporter, on the climb up another slope, the bike chain came off. No choice but to stop the bike by roadside. Fix the contact len first before getting on with the bike. Paul and pheck leng came over to speak to me.

Seems like the thighs are showing sign of fatigue, which is a surprise to me given it is not even half way point and my training should be sufficient to tackle the course. Maybe nutrient has been poor and the body is reacting to it.

After the first drop of the chain, I keep finding changing the gear on the front seems difficult. The quads are showing bigger evident of cramping up! It is scary to think that I will be cramping up as I have never experience this bad situation before.

Given the small amount of water in each bottle, I have to pick up each bottle every 10km. I try to drink as much as possible, eat something periodically. Reached the u-turn point in 1:30hr. Wow, a 15mins different from first lap!

On the highway back, it finally dawn on me that heading back is against headwind. I can feel the wind blowing me and I have to go low to get any reasonable pace going. It seems like a super long and agony slow ride before I get out of the highway.

I am finished when I came into Mathew flinders. Ass is numb(no longer feeling the pain), the sensitive muscle behind both the ankles(Achilles tendon) are aching(this is bad) and the thighs are cramping up from time to time. When the steepest slope just appear straight in front, I will like to attempt to climb and see how much the body can take(very optimistic). As per on cue, the chain dropped again and I have to come down and fix it(blooper). Given I am on the incline on the steepest slope, it will be suicidal to even attempt to cycle up given current body condition and position. No choice but to push up and is embrassing.

There is 1 more person pushing up together with me, while the rest peddle up. The lady cyclist attempt to climb 2nd portion of Mathew Flinders shortly after pushing up the 1st portion. She fells. Seeing the scene develop in front of me, I decide to be prudent and push up the 2nd portion as well.

The chain came off another time while on the rolling hills into town. I don’t know if I am too aggressive with the gears or it just need a good service. The thighs have started to cramp on the ride. It is a mild cramp fortunately and I am still able to continue. Everytime I reached a step incline, just need to sit back and peddle up and pray that it didn’t erupt to a full blown cramp.

By the time I completed 2nd loop. Many cyclist already going into transition for their run. Time check for 2nd loop 3:03hr. Total bike time is 5:33hr.

Another 3 more hours to go for last loop? That means 8:30hr for bike time? Bike cut off time is 5pm(local time). Oh dear, I am running danger of getting cut off if i don’t do a 3hrs bike ride for the next loop! According to the race booklet(which is slightly different from Ironman rule), swim cutoff is 2:15hr, bike cut off time is 10:15hr, run cut off time is at 17:00hr.

For strange reason, the speedo starts to work again as I started the final loop. By then only a handful are left doing the same. I have to focus on the next rider infront and keep track of it and don’t let myself go further behind.

I know technically I have about 8mins more than 3 hours before 5pm. But I have to target myself for 3hours ride and leave some for buffer.

I try to maintain a steady pace and get lots of encouragement from fellow competitors on the road. I have not seem any of these from my previous events.

The pain and ache didn’t go away as I proceed with the last loop. Just trying to be positive and get a good 30km to the mid point. Recalling race forecast that the wind speed pick up to 20km/hr at 3pm. Maybe that is the reason for being slow, the wind progressively get stronger so need longer time to complete. When I reached the highway again, I just try to make use of the wind(or lack of it as i couldn't feel it!) and get as much leverage as possible. Speedo indicates 25-27km/hr.

I have not taken a toilet break during the bike so far. This is very bad. This is sign of body malfunction! There isn’t much portable loo along the road, and according to race book, you might get disqualify if you decide to take an unofficial pitt stop. I have to keep looking for quiet spot, but when I do, the officer(on motors) are always nearby. The chain drop again before I finally reached U-turn point. I am hovering around 20-21km/hr average. Time check 7hr. Getting another 1:30hr bike ride back is going to be tough.

I am getting discourage with the bike condition until I am constantly worry about bike chain coming off on the front side. It doesn’t help that the bike front only have 2 speed. Fixing it on the big chain, I might not get up the slope! On the smaller chain, I am going to loose speed. To be on the same side, I decide to go small chain and peddle harder.

Finally I get to a portable loo. I was surprise that the testicles are dumb. No feeling! Omg, this is the first time I ever experience this. The good thing is that I am still able to pee and it seems healthy enough.

Pace dropped to 12-16km/hr on the return highway. I am almost in tears as I ran short of time and the wind isn’t helping. As I keep on moving doing my job, I have to keep reminding myself I have to keep it moving no matter what happened. I need to get the finisher medal for Enver. If I get cutoff at the bike portion, then it is my fate. In life a lot of things cannot be favour on my side. Let nature takes its course, if it is meant to be.

Cheers from the supporters and volunteers really push me to hang it there though the body is really weak by then. Taking each water point(10km apart) as guide, I keep looking at the split. Finally completed the highway route just a few mins behind schedule.

Never been happier to see Mathew Flinders again! When I reach the famous slope, this time round, I just drop off and push it up. Don’t even need to consider about it. Fortunately not much crowd there as well.

It is getting too slow and I have to go for bigger chain to get the speed back. If the chain came off again, it will. Just need to be careful when and how I change the gears. Up and down the slopes for the final time as I get into town. By then 8:30hr on the bike is not possible, definitely within 5pm. It was a relieve as I reached the Bike In entrance at 8:33hr. Clock on the event stated 10:11hr.

It haven’t ever occur to myself that I will do 20k+/hr pace on the bike. I thought China Ironman is bad, this is even worst. I deliberately choose undulating terrains to train, but still fell way shorts in term for this event. I have to rethink of the training in the future.

I took 2 packets of powergel and 3 packets of muesli bar. Nutrients aren’t enough. I make the same mistake as in Desaru event. If it is troublesome to access the food, I won’t be bother to take it.

Heart rate remains good 120-130 range. I don’t know if HRM is slightly faulty, at least I am feeling good about it.

Transition T2

A helper offer assistance in the tent, I am okay. Took a couple cups of Gatorade and pick up a sandwich. I have to eat something and keep the energy up.

I took my time to change as I am aware I have lots of time on hand for the run. One thing good about having running background is that the easiest section is at the end and with the hours went by with body getting warily, the strongest runner normally wins the race. I will be in control of my destiny provide HR don’t go north.

I left the transition with 10:22hr on the clock done.

Marathon

I have 6:38hr to complete the marathon. 3 loops of 14km awaits.

The strategy is to keep a minimum of 10min/km and complete within 6:30hr.

I try to do running but soon realize that I am going too fast around 5:30min/km and have to force myself to stop and walk. Even walking I am going at sub 9min/km pace. This goes on for the first 7km.

The quads are tight, the calves are not really bad, the Achilles tendon on the right leg seems to be going worst. Just have to be careful how I move around.

Looking at the HR, the max I am getting is 120-130bpm. It is very good, but I have to be conservative and try not to bust the engine. After many hours on the road, things could happen in a blink of an eye.

The route is 3.5km out to the neighborhood area(flat route) and back to the race tents, then out for another 3.5km along the CBD area/coast area(hilly) and back at race site.

It get difficult not to run more as I get onto the next 7km, as many supporters line along the route in CBD area. It is pretty heart warming that they read your name from the tag and cheers you on. I started to get a good rhythm going from there onwards. Of course the couple of slopes, I walked up. This is not a time for heroic stuff.

I caught sight of shortleg as we cross each other path at the race site, meaning she is exactly 7km in front of myself. Time check 1:55hr on the run.

I was given 2 light sticks by the volunteer and was safety pin ON, so I look like a light tree! I still have a long way to go and the darkness is going to engulf me soon.

On the 2nd loop, the strategy is pretty much the same. Run/walk for short period of distance. The body is getting into good pace as I start to crawl back the lost time.

The supporters and volunteers are indeed great along the way. The crowd size dwindles as the nights grow deeper, but the enthusiasm didn’t. Try to make up the name on your BIB(with failing lights), the words of encouragement are great.

I am going to be an Ironman. The crowd chanted a few times along the way. It has no effect on me. I have been there and done it. This is not getting the intended response. This is sign for my last IM race? If this is my last, I will like to enjoy the experiences before it ends. This propelled to keep on running.

Met up with shortleg exactly at race site on the next 2 exchanges. Time check 1:50hr on the run for the 2nd loop.

The body got heated up and I am ready to let it ripe on the last lap. Even though I have just done 28km on the run, I am not feeling the typical tiredness around this period of the run. Just as I stride forward, I have an acute pain at Achilles tendon. This is BAD! I have to walk!

Shaking, stretching by the road side doesn’t help to alleviate the pain. I have to put on my trusted “yoko yoko”. I have to walk from there onwards. I know I have sufficient time to complete, even by walking the last loop. It is disappointing to say the least, just as the engine is fired up. I also knew that this thing happen and could be worst so shouldn’t complain much.

I have been monitoring the HR condition and it is getting a bit concern. It still hovers around sub 130bps. It is too good to be true. I have know my body well enough that this is not normal.

If fate wants to end my last event this way, I can’t stop it. Just walk fast, I should be able to make it. I walk for the next 2-2.5km and from time to time start to light shuffling of steps to get some running. Slowly it gets better and I can resume running again!

I saw one young aussie lady competitor sitting on the road side sulking. She is tried and wanted to quit. I told her not to and even walking will have sufficient time to bring her across the finishing line. She thanks me and kindly request that I go on without her, after I offer to go with her for the rest of the race. As I make the return trip, I have seemed her moving again which is good.

I thought shortleg would have finished the run when I cross over the race site again, but not to be since I took longer time for the past 7km. I did manage to cross her at the town area(500 meters away) for the final time.

Knowing I am going to complete another Ironman and maybe my last one put me on a high. I felt good. The only thing that keeps bothering me is how come the HR is low despite the effort i am putting in. Also i felt sore chest. I didn't have any heart pain experience today, but when i touch it now, it is pretty sore. This is scarely.

As i came back to the town area(for 1 final time), along the "walls of graffti", i saw that aussie lady again. She is going to make it! I am relief to see. I give her some encouragement and proceed forwards.

Just before I turn into the final stretch whereby the high beam spotlights came shining on the finisher. I met with my 2 valuable supporters – Sweetheart and Enver. I stopped, give them a hug and kiss before I take central stage.

5:33hr for the run. After 15 hours, 54 minutes and 4 seconds. Keng Seow Han, you are an Ironman.

*After thoughts*: I couldn't have complete the distance, without the supports/encouragements from friends and family members. To have a goal and deliver the result is something worth treasure. It is a stressful experience to do the Ironman. Many things could have gone wrong with dire consequences. I will need to find another good reason, if i am getting another Ironman finisher medal. Now, i have a medal that is meant for my Son - Enver.

*Medical update*: I develop Shingles(another form of chicken pox) while in Australia. The chest pains, migraine, rashes and body ache i experienced are caused by Shingles! Did it affect my performance? Maybe it does, it really doesn't matter now.

North East Run 2010

Date: 14 March 2010
Time: 6:45am
Distance: 16km
Venue: Pasir Ris Park(Carpark C)
Route - Pasir Ris Park - Temasek Poly - Pasir Ris Park

It wasn't on the radar. 16km. Hmm...odd distance. What intrigue me...is..

It is held at Pasir Ris Park(i am staying over at Costa Sand(Pasir Ris)). 2nd some of the gang are doing the event. 3rd, i need a short run, and the distance(though short) is better than nothing. 4th, i manage to get a "free" entry, thanks to Sgrunners.

I woke up at 5:50am. Left for the event at 6:10am. Took a slow 10mins+ walk to the start point. No need to rush and find carpark. Just a casual walk. A nice change which i appreciate. The only thing that come close is Desaru event.

A small race. It started promptly at 6:45am. I crossed the start line about a couple of mins back. Pretty soon, came across FBB. Long time didn't see him on the circuit. Kind of good to see him again.

Less than 2km, i was stopped at the track by the traffic light. Hmm....shortly i saw someone in yellow flashing by...wonder is that my buddy. :p

It was a slow run as the run was impede by the large crowd, traffic lights, staircase climbing. Don't have much expectation, just a decent LSD. But given the nature of human, a little faster would be prefer.

Meet up with Alvin(gatecrash) and run together from his home(Tampines) to Temasek Poly and back. The sun was out in full blast and humidity is high. Climbing up the staircase 3 in a row, neatly climb up the stairs is amazing! Army style of marching up the stairs! With the more aggressive ladies couldn't wait for an opportunity to force her way through.

For whatever reason, the effort is decent for 16km. But the pace is like hmmm....LSD! Abit disappointing and i start to struggle along. But 16km, surely i can take the distance.

Reached the 8km mark in 56mins. Take it a step at a time. Slow and steady the distance get closer to the end. Decide to push up the pace after 13km to try and make it under 1:50hr.

I have the suspicion that the distance is short over the last few km as i completed the run in 1:45hr! Based on my per km calculation, it should be 1:50hr. Alas, distance is short.

Queue for water is okay. The ice cream run out when i reached there. Damn!

It was a good run nevertheless. At times just have to accept what is given.

The intent of the run, is to run around North East neighbour and yes, it meet the objectives. I also know that crossing overhead bridges and traffic lights stop are part and parcel of it, so wasn't that disappointed.

New Balance Pacesetters 30km

New Balance Pacesetters 30km
Location: KL(Malaysia)
17th Jan 2010
Time: 5:30am

This is the 3rd time i came over to KL for this event. Though the sponsor have changed and location slightly shifted, but the slopes remain the SAME!

It is a tough run.I am fully aware of it. I am prepared for it. I am taking this as part of the milestone as i prepare for the big event in March. If i can't event take this, how will i fare in March? No matter what, the run will goes on.

It was 4:30am when we meet the rest at Petailing street and walk to the start point. Garmin battery flat on the way there(i didn't charge for a few days) and i left it in the bag deposit. Whatever come, come. Let fates show me the way.

The cutoff time is 3:30hr. Each 10km is 1:10hr. I should be able to handle 7min/km pace i feel. Let see if i can do it.

Nothing fanciful, the race starts. I started behind controlling my pace. As usual everyone surge forward or rather i keep getting overtaken at the beginning. In fact a few runners that i recognise(that are typically slower) have overtaken myself. I felt abit uncomfortable on the pace. Don't know if the engine has gone kaupult or the slopes are causing some discomfort at this early stage of the run.

Not able to tell if HR is higher or pace of the run is causing undue stress on myself as i slowly move onwards with caution.

Water points is 5km apart. Of course, can't take that as distance, but will do no matter what.

First water station is around 33mins. System seem to be holding okay. Nothing to be alarm of as the slopes seem very familiar. Still feeling strong. 2nd water point like 1:13hr. Still felt alright, hopefully the engine don't fails at me.

Saw a few familiar faces as they make U-turn way in front. I have a few runners that are running around the same pace which i can take as pacer. Seems like local runners, so should be alright.

15km reached. Can't recall what time reached, but i felt i am on 7min/km schedule. Cool. Slowing move forwards. I getting slightly concern as i don't know how the engine will holds. Will i falter....the confidence still weak :p

Overtook Tao around 18km. Saw her walking. Sigh. She seems so strong and going at good pace. She should be good to go under 3:30hr. I keep thinking of the scene in Tokyo 2008. At 18km compare to 38km(in Tokyo), she is not going to make it. :(

Reached 20km(water point) in 2:19hr. I am on target. I also know that the engine is going to slow down. I can feel in the body. From there onwards, instead of running all the way, i have to walk up the slope fast and run on the flat and glide down slope.

Little did i know, the slopes are getting steeper from there onwards or the body getting tired more. wahaha... Put on my Mp3, i have to put more effort to make up the time.

Saw Evangeline around 23km. She runs slow and steady, while i slowly crept up. When she takes a break around 26km, i overtook here. I didn't slow down for her as i have a target to reach, leaving her behind.

Have to resort to my trusted walk/run strategy from there onwards till the end. It was a good run from there onwards. I really wish i have my HRM with me to keep track of the pace/HR at this moment. It will do good for training log. Sigh.

Slow and steady reached the end in 3:26hr. Still feeling decent. I guess i could have done much faster. Anymore, coming in under 3:26hr is good enough for me. Cool.

It is nice to see more familiar and smiling faces in the bright daylight. Spent some time catching up and soak into the atmosphere.

A long walk back to Hotel.

Good break to be in KL. Now must focus on getting ready for March event.

MR 25 Ultra 2009

I have a good rest. In fact from Jan till Dec 09. A good 11 months rest for the body, soul and whatever that encompass.

Too many events, one after another didn't allow the body to rest. More importantly didn't allow the mind to lose focus and allow the opportunity to slack.

Along the way, i have gained quite a few kgs and lost a few strides. It was dissappointing, but given the quantity/quality of workouts. These should be expected. When it does happen, it is hard to accept though.

In order to move on with lives, i have to step out of the comfort zone and venture back to area that it hurts. I shouldn't let the setback discourage me from doing things that i used to do. It could be worst, take heart and move on.

Today Ultra will be a stepping stone for something bigger. I am glad everything goes smoothly. The hours that put in didn't goes to waste. Things could have turn ugly.

Lap 1: 1:30(with rest period)
Lap 2: 1:30(with rest period)
Lap 3: 1:30(with rest period)
Lap 4: 1:35(with rest period)
Lap 5: 1:31(with pang sai break at ranger station)
Total: 7:36:05(watch). Offical 7:36:35

Started the run with Buay, Kayano and Burnz together on the first loop. I was surprised when i came out of the wood in 27min. Wow, it is abit too slow! I intend to run 1 or 2 loops non-stop. But in this first loop. I have started to walk up the slopes...i was thinking to myself - this is going to be a long day ahead. Finished the loop around 1:22hr, grab a can of isotonic drink and eat some bread and proceed to start the next lap at 1:30hr

This round, i am running with Burnz and SK(most of the way). We chat and taking turns to lead a steady pace. Came out of the wood in 27min. Decent enough, and proceed to complete another run in 1:24hr, goes through the same procedure as last lap and start the next set at 3:00hr

Continue to run with Burnz on most of the lap. Saw Gen inside the wood. She have a fall and seems to get some bruises, someone is attending to her and we move on. Came out of the wood in 28min. This lap should be the start of fatigue creeping in. Surprisingly it didn't arrive. Broke off with Burnz at the training area(2.4km point) and proceed back. He just behind me when i finshed the set in 1:26hr. Took grapes, isotonic drink, electroyle etc. Proceed to start the next set
at 4:30hr

This round, Francis pace me for 1 round. I have jio him and didn't believe he will turn out! Well, thanks to Francis, i have something to keep me accompany for this lap. I expected this lap to be the toughest of all the laps. When Francis clearing the path and warning of any pending slopes in front. It wasn't that bad. 29mins to clear out of the wood. Reached end point in 1:30hr. No aches, no cramps, just tired. Started the last loop at 6:05hr

Still feeling good and strong and on the last loop. I am game to try and hit towards 7:30hr finishing. Armed with my trusted Mp3, i ran with a spring and good spirit towards the wood. I know i am putting in some considerable effort on this lap. Left hamstring, like showing sign of cramping. Even the right side of neck is showing symptoms. Soon, the shoulder bade are starting to tell me a different story. Came out of the wood in 29mins and feeling still feeling "high" as i have manage to overtaken a few runners on this stretch..and most importantly..over U*******.

I was thinking of skipping the toilet break at ranger station and proceed and save time...but when i am just to reach ranger, i felt like tummy need a release. No choice, not to take risk and proceed to the toilet to pang sai. Ok...when it is time to go, it is time!

With this toilet break, the chances of hitting 7:30hr has vanished. I have to start overtaken those that i have left behind on this lap earlier again. I am tired and have to resort to the trusted run/walk strategy from there onwards. Crossing one turn/slope after another for the very last time. Slow and steady I manage to reached the MR carpark again. I have Enver and pheckleng waiting for me . I stopped for a while before proceed to finish the run in 1:31hr. Time checked 7:36hr.

It is a good milestone for me after Jan 09. Time to built up on it and see how far i can go next year.

Thanks to the supporter, without your precious time/$/effort. It would have been slightly more challenging to complete the laps.

Genting Trailblazer 2009

Genting Trailblazer 2009
Date: 1st Nov 09
Time: 8:45am(Adventure Race)
Distance: 14km
Type: Adventure race

I was here in 2008. It was interesting. I didn't really get to enjoy it though as around half way through the race, my HR went up and it becomes one of the scariest run i ever did. Scariest in term that i was blackout(for a few mins) but i am still able to proceed "blindly"forward. I survive to come back, even though i "vow" not to come back again for the event! Runners tend to have short memory. :)

This year i partner with shortlegs.

Arrange to meet at 7:30am at awana lobby...the blackie came almost 8am! I could have skin her alive if not for the race start time is 8:45am and the distance from the lobby to the start point is like 5mins walk.

While i waited for the blackie, memories from Busselton keep flashing back! The waiting.....arhh..... ok...now i know what to expect come March 2010. :) She has a preference for late training hours and has cold aka good weather sleeping mentality.

Meet up with Blackie and paul and we make our way to the football field.

The atmosphere is like last year. Obstacle wise, it seems more varieties compare to last year. Weather is holding up this morning. It has been raining on/off for the past 48hours and the ground is muddy!

Competitive group start off at 8:30am, the adventurous race start at 8:40am(5 mins early than planned).

The first part is about 4km up/down the golf course, before we break into the jungle. We started off from behind and quickly realise a human jam forming in front. There are some folks that are walking at this stage. If we keep at this pace, there is going to be serious queue later when we get into the trail. No choice but to open the pace and push as much as possible forward.

I still remember it wasn't that isn't at this portion of the route, meandering through the golf course is bit challenging for myself not to mention for those unused to this kind of environment. I am glad that there is a water point at the entrance to the jungle. Giving us a water break to slow down and take stock of the situation.

It gets muddy from there onwards. Sliding down the hills, pulling ourself up with rope, branches or digging the fingers into the hill to gain that leverage to get myself up.

It wasn't difficult as we have lots of traffic jam which give us lots of opportunities to take a break. Sometime feeling a little bit frustrated that i have to wait again. The engine is warm up and roaring to go and was held back repeatedly. No choice lah...have to be contented that i am still feeling "ok" to enjoy the event!

The distance like crawling slowly but the clocking tickling away. It is not that it really matter, just the time prolong, more folks are seem struggling along. I also realise that the longer i stayed out in the jungle, the problem are more likely to happen, given the climb always push up HR inevitably.

By the time i reached the long house - out of the jungle in 2:30hr, i was elated. The most difficult portion of the route has completed. What is left is clear open path with light inclines here and there before we start obstacle course.

Take a couple cups of water and feeling fresh, we started our run. Less than 30 seconds, that is the end of the run as HR shoot up. Damn!

I felt fresh and decide to proceed with walking up and down the winding road without stoppage. Guess in reality i am looking pathetic! Many of those that we left behind are overtaking us(even walking pace) is faster than ours. No choice, take it easy and moving forward. Did take half a tablet to see if it helps to moderate the condition, which didn't. :(

Glad to see Paul at the beginning of the obstacle course and we get to pass him our water bag, fuel belt etc. It was much fun going through the obstacles these time round compare to the last time. Maybe HR went up at a later stage and i am still not that bad shape to enjoy the games.

Crossed the finishing line i think around 3:03hr(forget to stop the watch). Distance register is slightly less than 10km! Much shorter than what is advertise(14km) and garmin didn't register any lost signal during the event!

Thanks Blackie for accommodating with this old tigger in this journey. This event gives myself a reality check on my current fitness situation and another lesson learned on how to deal with my medical condition.

Pictures here. Couldn't get more shots in the jungle as gloves are dirty from the sliding and pulling and getting a camera out for shooting is dangerous at times. Need both hands and be alert for any circumstances.

TNF Support Team - 24 Oct 09

The feeling isn't that bad compare to Sundown. Maybe i am still hurting due to the decision not to do anymore marathon after my "retirement" in Jan 09.

The effort that i put in preparing for TNF event is on par as for Sundown. But why i didn't blog down the details from the support team point of view for the Sundown event puzzled me. Maybe the pain was too much to write then and remind me.

I can still recall the reason i start blogging a few years back is to share my thoughts and experiences as i go through different spectrum of running. Be it in training up for the event, the event itself and post event. The ups and downs of running. The joy of finishing, the pain of injure and DNF that we have to go through as we pursue our goals. It is with this thoughts, that i decide to jot down the view from the eyes of the supporter for TNF.

Given a choice, i rather be part of the event rather then providing support. Can i just do my regular workout on event day and ignore my running friends that are out on the road and without providing them with some kind of support along the way? Being a runner, i would definitely appreciate a private support table along the way, no matter how small the gesture is. I am not leaving them behind if i am capable of assisting.

Preparation starts a few weeks before the event. Recruitment of the support crew, waiting for the event route to be announce and identify of support locations. What to bring and the logistics etc. It is like a mini project that involve various parties and i am the team leader.

I am fortunate to gather a few like minded runners(that are not taking part) that are willing to fork up their valuable time and money for the cause. Thanks to them i have an easy task.

Location of the support station took me a couple of days to decide. Consideration of the location of the official support station, car accessibility, distance on the race, the terrain and the need of the runner at various distance. The major locations(especially friendly to car accessibility) are covered by official stations, which make our private support redundant in a way. No choice but to use another yardstick to decide the position of the support table.

Given i am familiar with the terrain. i am aware of the critical location which require the additional support for breather(rest). Therefore we choose the location "peaks" - (summit of Bukit Timah) at distance 12.5km and the "highest peak" of Bukit Timah pipeline(37.5km). Another peak(Hill 265) is consider, don't think we can hand carry the stuffs(a few km) inside given it is a military location) and have to dismiss it.

Given this is a self volunteer support. The cost of the support is not cheap. Given Sundown experience, it might come to S$100, at least for myself. Therefore there is co-ordination require between us, who should provide what supplies to split out the cost.

The needs for 50km and 100km runners are different. Resources has to be split and hopefully we can covered adequately to all our friends(which we are supporting). Given the nature of the event, we have to forgo the support for 25km runners, as our resources are not wide enough to cover it.

*************************************************************************************
Event: The North Face 100km
Distance: 100km/50km/25km
Time: 4am/7am/9am

I was awake 3:40am+ by Enver. It give me an earlier start for the day ahead. Fill up the supplies and make 2 trip down to the car to load up. Plus last night supply loading, i hope i didn't forget anything.

Reached Esso station at 4:35am along Bukit Timah way ahead of the prearrange 4:50am. ST has just arrived. We shared out some of the supplies, as we need to split out our support later. Tiwazz make a long walk from his home with 6 bottles of Barley water! At least a few km walk! I was surprised. Bravo! Charlotte, being the nearest is late! Abit annoy that she didn't keep to the timing and also to myself for not arranging the meeting time earlier to cater for the late comers.

We left about 5am and reached BTVC in darkness. Have to resort in parking the car head in to the parking lot, as it is totally darkness and we won't want to risk crashing the vehicle on the barricade behind.

The front runners has just arrived and we have to quick hand/leg to grab our stuffs and head up the summit.

I grab the ice box with 2 bottles of barley, 4 bottles of isotonic, i bottle of water and a packet of ice(purchase at esso) up to the summit in darkness. With a backpack full of other stuffs(book, makan, cups, first aid kit), the total weight isn't that light in any sense.

Even though it is a short walk from BTVC to the summit hut, i was WET, arms aching and breathing slightly chuan when i reached. I am surprised that i manage to carry all the way up without any stoppage! We setup the table in darkness(except for our torch lights).

We saw runners coming up, couldn't make up who is it most of the time! Even though they just had a step climb, it is healthy to see them in very strong running stride. Given the fact they are doing 100km, i am not surprised. Of the 100km folks - only JC, Epalite and Commando stop for a breather. The rest just push onwards.

ST has to left us shortly to continue her support for JC. Shunyin joined us at 7:30am.

There was a pause while we wait for the 50km runners to come by. I have to make a trip down to the VC to release some pent up frustration and brought additional stuffs from the car.

The 2nd trip up isn't as WET as the first, but did enough to give the heart a bit more workout. I just wonder how did i manage to climb up without stoppage with those barang barang a hour ago! Maybe it is the darkness that make it easier. Ignorance is bliss?

The first 50km runner across our support table exactly at 8am. He is very fast and looks very strong! Shortly all the familiar faces start to come up one after another.

We gave support to all runners that come forward and our friends. As expected the first too we saw were Soon Tuck and Lionel. Followed by Terence, Clare, Yeehua, Regina, Aili, Ray, Joanna, Kok Wai and Yulan not in any particular order. Alot of Sgrunners came over and nice to see that everyone is still strong and cheerful.

At 9am, it is time to close shop and proceed to our next support point - highest peak along Bukit Timah pipeline. I am surprise to see a few familiar faces as we walked down. Eg my Indian friend(Mohan), Catwoman and kkchin(he is late to start by 30mins). 12.5km in 2 hours! It is going to be a LONG day ahead(hopefully they don't get DNF).

By 7:30am, our support station at the highest peak are in place leads by Christopher, Molly and Loune. I was surprised that it took so long for them to get things ready, as they meet 6:30am at Macdonald(King Albert Park). Later did i realise what had happened.

A called from ST realised that JC has passed the pipeline and couldn't find our support point and she needs to move on meet JC at the end of Rifle Range Road(RRR). She won't be joining us at the pipeline.

RRR is barricade by the organiser and i couldn't find a parking space along the road. Damn! No choice drop the rest of stuffs and the folk along the shortest path to the pipeline and recee for parking space.

Up and down RRR and even drove over to Jalan kampong chantek to find the nearest parking spot. Yes, i can see parking space at the front gate of the military and PUB installation. But given the nature of the building, i rather not block their passageway. No choice but to head back to RRR and park in the carpark about 600 meters(i reckon) to the entrance of the pathway inside BT pipeline.

It was getting hot and a walk towards the entrance of the pipeline seems so far away. Fortunately i don't require to carry much, except 2 backpacks until the military base(SOA) whereby ST pass me another ice-box and i make the 3-400 meters walk in. Another challenging walk! The arms are stretch again when i reached the support point around 10am. Felt like doing sets of weights in the gym on this morning supporter workout!

Weather was hot and runners start to trickle in. One thing i learn from the experience with Sundown and TNF are our support table are meant for mid to slow pace runners. Not for fast runners. I am and non of our close running kaki are elite/fast runners. So in a way, we don't quite understand their needs well. At least from my point of view, it is abit disappointed to see some reactions among those runners.

Eg, runners ask for water and refuse to run/walk over(like 5-10meters) to grab it and expect us to come to them! Official support table, the water is on the table, you come and grab it. Unofficial support table, the runner ask for water, continue their stride(run/jog/walk) along and expect you to dash over to them to give them!

Water, water, shouted one runner. I run over with a cup of chill 100+ as i just don't have time to grab the plain water bottle from the icebox and pour out in time. Guess what the runner did? Pour away the 100+ and throw the cup down and continue his journey.

Another runner pick up a cup of 100+, in front of us, pour out the water and take a slip only. Reason, too much water is bad for him.

I can tell you, the feeling is like....wtf, we pay for the water, get it chill and carry the water all the way in and you are so wasteful! At least have the courtesy to return the unfinished water back to us and we know we have pour too much water and not throw it on the floor in "public"!

The majority of the runners are gratefully to our support and thanks us for being there. Which is heart warming.

I know i am being harsh here. But i still going to make it a point to speak out what i feel is uncall for.

First of all, if you want to be a supporter, be prepare to do it willing. Not come and show everyone you are doing a dirty and super hard job and come bragging. Everyone is here to do support and not here to be a peacock show.

I was irriated by her words. Firstly i didn't invite her to join us. She came on her own and brag about how tough to take pictures, up and down during the morning event and now have to come over and blah..blah..blah...

It ended in a short shouting match( i hope it don't sound so bad) and the bragging stopped. Thanks goodness.

I don't care if you are a general in the Army or whatever VIP. If you don't be humble and bragging and belittle others i will not return the due respect. It is a hot afternoon and everyone is trying to stay cheerful and provide good support for the runners.

I hope whatever unhappiness stop here.

As expected, the first pair of toos are Soon Tuck and Lionel. They came cheerful and seem that fatigue has not set in yet.

Yulan came shortly. This lady just love the nature races...

Regina(came in torn pants at the kneecap) with aili. Regina has a fall. We try to wash away the wounds and use antiseptic wipe to clean her wounds. It just some scratches, so didn't warrant a plaster.

Terence still going strong, no seeing of his buddy(heard bad cramps way behind)

Clare and Yeehua came shortly after. That slacker, keep saying want to take "coke" few days back, but give it to her, say she has enough of drink + food.

It take a while, before Tao and Yankee appeared. Slow and steady these two..TMM behind!

Clocking ticking and we started to wander and worry for Ray. Cramp so bad that he was way behind. *concern*.

Loune has to fall out earlier from the support. The rest of us soldier on. Thanks Jie Jie, hope you have a wonderful experience! Next year take part ok?

I think around 1:45pm, Ray arrived. He has bad cramps and more like mental is what keeping him going. Together with a group of Sgrunners, they slowly move forwards. Hopefully with group, it is enough to pull everyone through. They still have 2 hours+ to cover another 12km.

At 2pm, we decide to pack it up and head out. It is a long walk with the barang barang out to the main road. So glad that i can ditch those stuffs!

It is a long walk as well for Christopher and myself to reach the carpark. Retrieve the cars and make our way back to pick up the rest.

Christopher, Molly, Kelly and Shunyin take the other car, whereas Tiwazz, Charlotte and Evangeline and myself another. We splitted from there.

After a call to Epalite to get his location, we immediately set our way to Mandai/Track 15 to setup another station to support the 100km runners. ST and Andy arrived shortly as we waited by the road side.

Melvin, Freddy, JC, Peter and Voon Ho are some of the familiar faces we saw that past our stations. Everyone still going on as strong, except for Voon Ho which is slightly slow. I think fatigue has crept in badly and he is suffering.

We waited till almost 5pm, where we heard the news that Voon Ho has decide to declare out of the race at Hill 265. I can feel the disappointment. He has come a long way - 70km and couldn't continue due to the time factor. It is rather sad.

I received news from MR that Ray have bad cramps that he need to seek medical attention and stop the race at Durain loop. He must be in great pain.

I can feel their anguish. I have DNF due to similar kind of circumstances. It is not pretty. The ego is hurt, you will start to doubt your ability.

It is a super hot day. The heat and terrain is challenging. At times, everything goes according to plan. At times, it is a struggle just to finish before the cut off time. If it gets too painful and long, we need to have a clear mind and make the judgment when to call it a day. Health and life is more important than money and ego. If we failed today, we can try again. It has been a long day, give yourself a pat in the back that you survive and brave enough to make the decision. We have the responsibilities not just to ourselves, but to our families and love ones.

If you are still game enough, next year i will train with you guys for the event. At least i will try if my body still able to take the training.

For those that completed. It is a long race and you should be proud that you have completed. Take a couple of days of rest and i will ask you if you are interested to do it again next year! Runners have short memory of pain...don't you agree? Wahaha.

Since the unexpected twist in plot, we have to cut short our support schedule. We waited for Epalite to come out to Lorong Asrama before we split out.

It has been a long day and i need a rest and be with my family.

Thanks to the supporters (Tiwazz, Charloette, Shunying, ST, Christopher, Molly, Loune, Kelly and Evangeline) to join me in our own support stations. It has been a long day and you girls and guys rock! *muak*

Army Half Marathon 09

Date: 16 Aug 09
Time: 7am
Distance: 21km

This is the event, i have signed up every time ever since i started to run. This year is no exception. Giving my body condition, taking on 21km is the direction i am heading towards. There isn't many 21km around either to be choosy. Anyway, the way the army handle this, i am confident they won't disappoint the runners that much.

Ok, i am not a fan of the strict regiment, but i know they are going to do their "best effort" to a decent job. Unlike SCSM, it keep boasting this and that and ended up w/o moving forward! Damn! I am not going to do another SCSM! Period!

I reached our meeting point slightly after 4am. I am surprised that there are not much car this morning. Even after 4:30am, i still could get a parking lot! Damn! This is strange!

Terence has complain about leg sng(from ICT) and agree to run with me...slow and easy...2:30hr pace. Ok...i think, let runs.

My last 21km is in Jan 09 during Goofy Race. There i did a mid 2:10-2:20hr. This time round, i hope to maintain the timing. My training over the last few months have been decent. Have not been slacking too much and should be able to achieve the timing i believe.

Before the race start, i realise the new championship chip on the ankle has went missing! Damn! i know it can't be secure with my ankle strap, but i didn't realise it can get lost so easily! First time running without a chip feel funny though.

The race is schedule to start at 5:30am. It was strange to get the flag off 5mins before the time! Wah...this isn't good for those still getting to the starting pen! We didn't know it has started! Ok, i heard the word "GO" by the DJ, but it was done at such a funny tone that i thought he is joking!

The race started at a fast pace for most. I go with a slow and smooth running with Terence by my side. It is a warm morning. I can feel the body losing water within the first km and subsequently getting worst. It was an okay pace for me. Keep it light and easy and slowly move on. The trainings will bring me through i keep telling myself.

Up and down Sheares bridge and come across many familiar faces. Tao was running nearby, so is divy as well. Breathing and HR still maintain at a expected range. Pace seems to be a bit slow though. Nevermind, just go easy with the flow.

Reached ECP still in darkness. Taking every opportunity to take in fluid as we ran along. Looking for 100+ more than water. Meet up with more familiar faces that started in the front. First 10km about 1:10hr. Hmm....I feeling okay...not say very fresh or tired....

Saw a familiar face doing funny thing! Run up and down, carrying a bottle taking water/100+ and run back taking care of his new love. Wahaha....Funny.... I heard even more adventurous things that they did from grapevines at the kopi session...:)

Pace has not increase as i try to focus one water point to another along Nicoll Highway/Mountbatten. Can feel fatigue creeping in. Spotted quite a few interesting pom pom groups...quite a nice touch i feel from the organiser...kudos...

10km runner merge with us on the last stretch. Again witness a few familiar faces along. Kind of nice to see them going at a fast pace. How i wish i can catch up with them and chat along..keke..wilful thinking i know!

I am struggling as i head towards F1. Breathing and HR is at expected range, but i felt tired. The only explanation i can think of is that my endurance is no longer able to run the distance. I have been feeling this way for a long time. I just couldn't find any reasons, why i am feeling tired during training. I have been doing my training regularly, but why it is not able to call upon during races? The hours and effort put in training is not equal to the output! Demoralising.

The distance get nearer as we edge forward. Slow but surely we reached the end. Finished in 2:28hr based on the watch. On the official clock, it is 2:31hr.

Phew! It was not as painful as last year, but i took another 5mins more. Another PW! Sigh...

HR dropped after the race completed. It was kind that no complication during the run. Thanks to Terence who ran with me. I couldn't have done a much slower timing if not because he is around.

I experience something that i have never don't so ever in races! I have cramped on the right calf...on the way walking out of Padang, after the chit chat with some of the familiar faces...Damn...after that, cramped on the left calf! Wahaha...yeah lah...all of you laff at me! One day will be your turn! *evil grins*.

I guess, fitness and body have remind me once again. No longer what i had, even though the training hours are there, the result isn't proportion to the effort. That is the reality. Time to rethink about next year target. One small step at a time. I hope i can control the urge.

Desaru Triathlon 2009

Another year, the 3rd time i am back at the same location.

Think back. There is no sporting events that make me take part 3 times and yielding to do another one! AHM, 2 weeks later is another event that i am interested. But the feeling is different.

This is my first Tri event and it hold a special spot within myself. Next 2 time(include this time) is Swim Relay. I hope this will be my last swim relay. There are reasons why i am not doing HIM for the past 2 years.

Next year i will like to do HIM for myself! It is time to move up. :)

Date: 1st August 09
Time: 9am
Distance: 2km(swim), 90km(bike), 21km(run)

The swim (That is me!)

It was as wavy as expected from the start. I started off slowly..the last swim in the pool still struck me hard. I don't want to push and get myself sputtering and crawl to the finish.

I aim is to do a typical swim, take it easy for the first loop, subsequently push up the pace, if body still able to take it.

It wasn't a difficult swim. I just head straight for the first buoy using breast stroke. I can see quite a few swimmers are drifted to the right, but i am heading where the buoy is! First buoy, 2nd buoy and head back the shore. I was feeling good, but as usual keep having people torpedo away from myself which is abit demoralising. wahaha....I was shock to read 16mins...no wonder i find it like a fast...i think the distance is short.

I head into the water still thinking could that be 26mins instead of 16mins. But it seems like a quick swim, so cannot be that 26mins long! I decide to push abit as per plan. Not really chuan..just go with a much faster rate. Hmm...in quick timie, i am already heading back to shore. For some reason, i refuse to push the pace...maybe the last swim in the pool, still cause me a mental block! So it is like going at the most 80% and couldn't go any faster. Damn!

I start to run when i am back at shores. I was feeling very good, no chuan! Damn! i didn't put in enough effort in the swim! I try to run fast back the transition point. A familiar back appears in front of me. It is my buddy! Hmm...i "ding ding" her and move on. Damn...even running i don't feel chuan! Sigh....i guess the fire to compete was lost!

Reach transition at 36mins+...damn...where is my relay team mate! KNS! She is slacking by the bike area, instead of at the holding area like the rest of the team!

36mins include of the 250 meters run up the shores. The swim is extremely short! Felt like 1.5km! It is sad that it is so short...also leads to many PB(later)!

The bike (Tao)

Weather was not as hot as long year. Head wind is pretty okay. A good time expected.

Tao came back 3:40hrs. A good 8 mins improvement compare to last year. Burnz took 1.5 lap to overtake her. She is smiles are around, when she completed the bike. No bathtub to lie this time round! Wahaha...

The Run (Yankee)

Weather seems like hotter than last year. Well, last year was raining abit when the run start!

At least the water points are good. Time checked in 1:56hr.

Seems like the math isn't that good..but i am sure my watch reached 6:13hr when Yankee crossed the finishing line.

This year, i have an enjoyable trip. Will be back for next year!

SGrunners 4th Anniversary

Today is another landmark for SGrunners. It is the 4th year anniversary celebration. It is not the actual day though.

This year is a simple event, compare to previous year. That doesn't mean the involvement is lessen that previous year. It starts with a 4km run inside BG, follow by a game and photo taking sessions.

Running 4km, is abit too short for Sunday. Therefore throwing in a bike session prior to it to make it a decent workout. Intend for an easy workout giving Desaru event is next week.

This morning, meet up at Casaurina with Tao and Gen. The rest of the regular cycle kaki are doing 100km somewhere. Meet up with Jerry & Andy with other cyclist at LP as well. Have a chat before they head out for their Mandai loops.

Road was a bit wet, due to the rain. We didn't get much rain while cycling though. My shirt are poker dots with dirt! Damn! It was a good pace this morning going from LP to Mandai - Zoo - Bukit Timah, Dunearn - BG. Total 40km.

Suppose to join in the 4km run, but we are late. The group has left. Sigh. Stayed back and chit chat with some of the regularly faces.

There are many new faces among the SGrunners. I only know less than 10% of them. Haha...the old gang have move on...left the "unwanted" ones.....It is good to put some faces to the nick, though i didn't identify myself, i recognise some of them.

Did i involved in the game? Hmm....okay...Nope....according to the Tall one..ok...it was fun watching the wit and strategy adopt by different team. Wahaha....

After the game, photo taking sessions, it is time to seek goodbye. Some choose to stay back for prata session. We didn't stay for long as we have to make our way back home.

A nice workout & Happy 4th Anniversary to SGrunners!

Stand Up & Be Counted

From Lake Taupo, My Busselton kaki have completed her 2nd such event.

It was like yesterday when we speak and sort of "agree" that Lake Taupo should be our next target.

1 year+ the road, it is she that "Stand Up & Be Counted". Where am i?

Such a different contrast - Irony. SH just feedback that my arms are bigger due to fat accumulation(i guess). Sigh.

Based on the result. 1:26:42 swim, 7:32:54 bike, 5:01:17 run, Total: 14:15:31hr

She has improve on the swim and run. It must be a tough bike route. Well done my darkie friend. Rest well and enjoy the well deserved holiday with your love one.

Goffy's Race and a Half Challenge

It started off a couple of years back. I am totally amaze by the finishing medals for Disney Marathons in Orlando(Florida).

I wanted to do the Disney race last year, but i was too late to register when i make up the mind, so no choice. This time round, i gather the troops way before hand and jump at the gun of "midnight" registration to make sure i get a slot!

Afrter much planning, we are off for a race of a magical moment.

Goffy's race consist of 21km on Saturday and 42km on Sunday. A back to back run...It was an concept. With my fitness(or rather lack of it), i am sure i can still make the timing.

Date: 10 Jan 2009
Time: 5:50am
Distance: 21km
Starting Point: Epcot
Weather: Cold - estimate 5-15 deg c throughout the run
Medal: Donald Duck Finisher Medal
Cut Off time: 3:30hr

It was a cold dark morning(too early to have sunlight) when the race started with fireworks and blessing from Micky, Minnie, Goffy and Donald. Cool.

I find myself warming up pretty fast for this run. Around 1km i feel shiok. I have to control my pace. At the beginning we ran always together, taking photos of every 1 mile and beautiful sights.

I felt strong and almost wanting to speed up, but i control. Knowing tomorrow will be another long run ahead, no point going faster for no apparent reason. Furthermore just wanna go slow and enjoy the atmosphere.

Manage to take some photos of Disney character along the way. Which was cool.

Ran with Divey in the middle of the race after caught up with her. Her race started 10mins earlier than mine. Not actually true, i deliberate stay back to start the run with the rest of the kaki today. No point going solo since not aiming for PB(with my condition PW more likely, not to mention about PB!)

We ran for a mile or so together and i have to push on as my legs feel abit strain and i want to end this run ASAP to give myself more rest time.

Catch up with a few folks from IRAS. Too Kar was there as well! Cool..another too member as well.

I was surprise to see her in Orlando(doing Goffy as well). This too kar, deserve a spank! Don't reply email!

Ran and chit chat with Too Kar for a couple of miles and have to push on as legs are getting fading fast.

Slow, but steady, completed the 21th km in 2:14hr.

Waited for the IRAS team to came back and take photos with the National Flag(borrow from Too Sim). Cool.

Photos of the event here.

Date: 10 Jan 2009
Time: 5:50am
Distance: 42km
Starting Point: Epcot
Weather: Cold - estimate 5-20 deg c throughout the run
Medal: Mickey Mouse Finisher Medal
Cut Off time: 7:00hr

As per yesterday, we are back at the starting line once again.

The legs are strained and felt tired before the event even started. This is the consequences for having lack of training in preparation of the event. Given the situation on hands, there is something i can and cannot afford to do. I know i can do it, only a matter of timing.

Shortly after the run start, the strains appear early. By the time i reached 21km, i have to resort to walk and run. It is going to be ugly.

This could be my last event before i going for my
retirement. I have to treasure whatever is "left" of it. Injury(sure will have later) or not, it doesn't really matter now. Will there be another one? I don't know. Whatever it is, let fate leads me.

Walk, Run, struggling along, taking pictures as well. In a snail pace, i manage to "crawl" to complete the event in 5:43:24hr

Photos FR for the event
here.

I have come a long way. I glad it ended as plan. Looking at the bright side, things could be much worst.
