Les Petits

If you've seen the latest issue of Babiekins Magazine you will have probably have noticed these beautiful dolls by Kelsey-Garrity Riley which I included in my "What's Hot, What's New, What's Now" picks. I love Kelsey's illustration work and was excited to see that she had started experimenting with textiles.

Kelsey has been busy sewing new dolls for her etsy shop  (where she also sells her beautiful postcards and prints) and is also working on some new finger puppets, which I find absolutely delightful.
Another one to watch out for me thinks!

Elle Chiffonne...

I'm dotty
About spots
With a hint of salmon
And black

The Orphans of Sainte Cécile / Les Orphelines de Sainte Cécile

Do you remember Jasmine, a beautiful but sad looking doll made by Patricia Le Baudrier from Papillon Bleu UK?  Well today I'd like to tell you about Marie who appears in Patricia's first book - The Orphans of Sainte Cécile / Les Orphelines de Saint Cécile.

Written and narrated in French and English (the book comes with a CD audio in both languages), The Orphans of Sainte Cécile / Les Orphelines de Saint Cécile. is the story of seven little orphans during the second World War who will have to move from France to England. Marie is the narrative voice as she is writing in her journal. She also loves to take photos of her friends.

This charming, original book is entirely illustrated with Patricia's handmade art dolls. It really is delightful and obviously perfect for Savannah who is bilingual and turns nine in November (if I can wait that long!). You can buy a signed copy of Patricia's very popular book from her website (pre-order, available on 15th of August), and perhaps make a note of her etsy shop for future purchases.

Special finds like this are the reason why I love blogging so much
I hope you like it too!

A bientôt mes amis !

Waiting

Waiting patiently
For the sun to put his hat on, and keep it there

Along A Long Road

Miles had two favourite English books up until yesterday.
Richard McGuire's Night Becomes Day  and Christoph Niemann's Subway have pride of place in his bookcase (along with many a Dr Seuss and Dennis Lee poems, I hasten to add). The visual and lyrical appeal is obvious. Miles likes his rhymes (to his mum's delight) and although he is only just starting to read in French, he knows these easy-to-read stories off by heart, and was proud to take them to school to show them to his friends.

And now he has another one to share - award-winning artist and designer Frank Viva's first children's book "Along A Long Road". After seeing it on Ohdeedoh a few ago I thought I'd order it to put away for Miles for Christmas. However when it arrived yesterday, I knew I couldn't wait.

See the road?
There it goes!
From page to page
Without a break

We've read the story over and over,
Following the lone cyclist's ride from cover to cover,
Tracing his journey on the shiny yellow track,
Up and down, in and out, through and around.

A new favourite
A must-have
For young and old alike!

(c'est même mieux qu'une nouvelle toupie Beyblade selon Miles...)

Fresh Talent: Sam Falconer

This isn't the first time I've written about old English nursery rhymes and it won't be the last. I'm a big kid at heart and I'm always delighted to find new interpretations of some of my favourite childhood ditties, especially when they're as fun as these digital collages by London-based illustrator Sam Falconer.

I discovered Sam's work when reading about the recent Kingston University Degree Show.  Inspired by a love for science, narrative and the possibilities of digital collage, Sam's quirky, playful style lends itself perfectly to children's illustration (have a look at Atom) and animation. I love how Angus Dick has brought his art work to life in Balloon.

As always, I'm looking forward to following Sam's first steps into the professional world. A little birdie told me that he was hoping to work on a series of limited-edition books, including a collation of his nursery rhymes (I'll be first in line!), AND he started filling the shelves in his etsy shop last night!

Go on, treat yourself to a set of postcards or a print!
Sam's work will put a smile on your face, and make a young graduate very happy
That's what all this is about isn't it?

Rosie

I have a new love called Rosie

Or should I say,  Kate McCarthy.

Check out her paintings, paper pieces and illustration (love "The Little Girl with the Loud Voice"), if you're not already familiar with her work.

I discovered "Rosie" whilst browsing Story, a new shop I wrote about a while ago. I love it! It's beautifully created and has led me to interesting up-and-coming and established artists/makers such as Travis Paterson, Elisabeth Barnett and Rebecca Mayo (pleased to see they've welcomed Sandra Eterovic on board too!).

A wonderful thing the internet, n'est-ce pas ?
