Dr. Strange #4 cover art

Thumbnails, layout, pencils, inks, final color sans logo, mock-up with original logo placement and final cover with trade dress, etc. Looks like Doc and the other magicians are toasting the New Year so a slightly belated Happy 2016 to all of you! Hope it's a good one!

Cover art for All-New X-Men #19

I think this one went on sale yesterday. Colors and seps are by the supremely talented Mr. Chris Sotomayor.

By the way, I don't have the slightest idea where that little feather in the lower left corner came from.

Finally, The Man-Thing Graphic Novel!

Looks like this is scheduled to go on sale in October and it'll be a hardcover! You can pre-order at the Amazon link over on the right, but they don't have any images yet. With that in mind I hope no one cares if I post a couple of samples here to whet your appetite:

Black Widow redux

A while back I was asked to do an updated version of a Marvel Fanfare piece from the '80's. The commissioner asked for the classic costume and hair. I was able to fix some of the things that bothered me in the original, like the spider and the pose. I also tweaked the lighting a bit. As with most pieces, I started with a sketch...

Another Hulk sketch

Continuing with our green theme: I think this one is at least 7 years old. Maybe more...

Captain Marvel

As with the Warlock head sketch, I tried to get a little bit of a Gil Kane vibe in the drawing, but it didn't really come through.

Loki

I ran out of room for the horns.

Adam Warlock

I tried (and failed) to make this look a little more like a Gil Kane drawing. I really liked that series from the early '70's.

Big Hulk Painting

Pencil prelim and finished painting. This one is Gouache (opaque watercolor) on gray board, 16 x 20".  A small, black and white version of this piece appears on the cover of my new sketchbook.

Dr. Strange sketches

Sorry for the long absence. A short vacation from blogging turned into a much longer break but I've accumulated a few sketches in the mean time so I should be able to do a post or two before I run out of steam again.

Hope you're all having a good Summer!

Here's Doc:

Morbius

I always liked the way Gil Kane drew this old Spidey villain's face. Structure, structure, structure...

The Thing

No, not James Arness. Some other time, maybe.

This is peculiar...

I just stumbled upon this 2005 photo of comedian / voice actor Maria Bamford and did a bit of a double-take:

Is it just me or does it look freakishly similar to this Marvel cover painting I did back in 1988?

The only alteration I made was flopping the photo so that the lighting is on the left. The original can be seen here.

Cue Twilight Zone theme...
