VG: How is the concept behind today's shoot? It was set with the intention of showing the hidden sexiness that only SHINee has. Who amongst the 5members was able to digest this concept the best?

Onew: (without hesitating) It's Jonghyun!

Jonghyun:The 5 of us have a different kind of sexiness. Minho is gentlemanly as well as sexy, Taemin allows people to feel the cute but also slightly sexy side of people of his age, the reversal is interesting. In actual fact I have also heard people saying that I am sexy too. (laughs)

Key: In SHINee, the member who is the icon of sexiness is Jonghyun hyung!

Onew: Even so, the 5 members are the most sexy on stage because the expression and voice can only be spread in that moment.

Jonghyun: That is the power that a man can exude. We may not have very well toned muscles, but we do have a few kind of manly charms.

VG:Last time when we knew you all, you were all really skinny. Now that we meet again today, you seemed to have become more well built?

Jonghyun:We have all been working hard to exercise. In order to train and manage our physical strength, we have been exercising everyday. Actually, when we practice dancing, it's also ample exercising.

VG: Everyone has been trying to lose weight right?

Key:Because we have a special eating place that we are designated to eat at, we have no choice. It's hard to stick to an 'one food' diet.

Taemin: We are accustomed to not eating when it is late.

Key:Especially if we have a performance the next day, we definitely cannot eat as it is highly likely that our faces will be bloated.

Jonghyun: Even so, there will still be times when we will secretly sneak in a bite. (laughs)

VG:If you become even thinner than now, the noona fans will be worried! Everytime we mention SHINee now, there will always be comments like'the noonas' wish' that pop out.

Jonghyun: Actually we do have a lot of noona fans and the spread of our fans is actually more diverse than we thought. We are very thankful. It will be good if we can extend the spread even more.

Key: No matter what, the noona fans and the fans in our age group express their love differently from other people.

Jonghyun: Yes. They really take care of us kindly, showing concern, sometimes treating us like their dongsengs. Yes, just like how they will treat their blood related dongsengs, or maybe even a relative or the dongseng living next door? A noona who fumbles occasionally. (laughs)

VG: Which member has the highest popularity amongst the noona fans?

Jonghyun: Of course it's our maknae Taemin.

Onew: A fan who is the same age as me is a noona to Taemin.

Taemin:There was a noona fan who told me "When I eat, I want to lay out your eating utensils and dishes for you". Because it's something that I heard during debut, it became the "most impressionable love attack"line that I have heard so far, a irreplaceable number one spot for me.

VG:It's been a year since your interview with [VOGUE GIRL] a week after your debut, and we finally meet again. Compared to the times when you sang "Noona you are so pretty", everyone has matured a lot.

Key: The members have all changed a lot. It's hard to pinpoint what exactly.

Onew: Everyone has grown both physically and mentally.

Minho: We have learned a lot after debuting for a year. We are still the same,after dispelling our curiosity of the stage, we now have a new query about it.

Taemin: In handling every single moment, we seem to be more experienced with time. In the past we used to be very nervous to go on stage, now we are very natural and we also know how to give a better performance.

Jonghyun: It's not so much about dispelling the nervousness, it's more of throwing away the unnecessary external pressure, and completing the job with our utmost efforts.

Minho: We seem to have mature after having a taste of the working society life. We have also grown taller by a lot...

Jonghyun:Taemin and Minho have really grown a lot! At the rate they are growing,maybe they can even shoot past the ceilings. (laughs)

VG: Before you made your comeback with the second mini album, you rested for 4 months. How did you spend it?

Jonghyun: Every single day was spent practising the song and dance. Everyone was busy with returning to the stage, and was also curious about the response of the fans to 'Juliette'.

Onew: Because we that only practice had improve our abilities, so we did not rest for even a day.Because with practice doesn't lie. (i.e. if you practice, there will be results to show)

Minho: Everyone will think of resting but we really did not rest. Because the time to rest is the chance for us to develop even more. During promotional activities, we hardly have time to practice because our schedule is so packed. If during practice I was unable to do well, I will try to compensate for it during my next activity. That gives me a sense of contentment personally. (VG: Your hunger for winning is very strong.) I hate losing to others. (VG: You must be very alike to your soccer coach father?) My mother is also like this. My father's hunger for winning is really amazing. (VG: With such a hunger for winning, don't you want to be a soccer player?) I really want to. When my hyung and I were born, we decided to learn soccer with our hearts set on it. To become a soccer player was just obvious but our father objected to it. He understood better than anyone else that soccer is very tiring, but thanks to him, I was able to become a member of SHINee so I do not regret it.

VG: To receive first place upon comeback is really exceptional.

Jonghyun: We only knew that we were in contention for first place on that day itself.

VG: Isn't it informed to you the day before?

Key: It has always been on the day itself.

Jonghyun:We were already happy to be candidates, but in the end we really got first! We got a shock but were also very very happy. It just so happened that the Super Junior sunbaenims were around, and they sincerely congratulated us and were happy for us. The sunbaenims were also teary too.

Key: I was trying hard to contain my tears on stage but the moment I got off stage I started crying.

Minho: I felt like crying when I saw Super Junior sunbaenim. I was very touched to receive the sunbaenims' well wishes.

VG: No matter what, you all are from the same company so you will be closer right?

Jonghyun:Of course. We were role models to each other so that gave us a lot of strength. When we got first, the sunbaenims will message to congratulate us. Because everyone knows how much hard work has been put in before we could receive that first place, it feels like we are all on the same boat.

VG: Because the song that you composed got first place, Jonghyun-goon cried really badly?

Jonghyun:I was really thankful. It is just a hobby that I was developing so to have such a result, I was very astounded but also very happy. (VG:Composing can also be considered as a hobby?) Because I am not a professional composer now, it can only be an interesting hobby to me.In the future, I will work hard in leaning how to compose melody in order to become a singer-songwriter.

Onew: I also wish to be the same as Jonghyun.

Key:The company did not especially appoint Jonghyun hyung to write the lyrics. They gave everyone the opportunity but in the end, Jonghyun hyung grabbed it. The lyrics was written well and it became our title track. Everyone also learnt some acting but it was Taemin who got the guesting on the sitcom, doing acting recently.

VG: How does Taemin feel about doing acting?

Taemin: It's really interesting! If there is the chance, I want to do it simultaneously with my schedule as a singer.

Key:In the future we will be showing everyone such individual activities like these. Do look forward to seeing the members growing up gradually,to how they are changing. It will be good if new groups in the future say "We want to be like the SHINee hyungs."

VG: Reading the lyrics of 'Juliette', there are meaningful lines such as 'give you my soul'. What are the actual romance types of the members?

Jonghyun:I was inspired to write the lyrics after watching the movie . At that time, I looked up to the courageous man who was fearless of death. In the movie, Romeo is as old as Taemin and he is even younger than me. I felt that the courage is really remarkable.

Minho:Because up till now I haven't been in love before...So I am not too sure about love...Yes, so I am not too sure about what kind of romance I want to have, just imagining it occasionally. I will want to try the passionate romance in too. A love with someone who is about the same age as me but is also interesting and cute. Hmmm, I can only know how to love when I really get to that stage. (laughs)

Jonghyun: When you are in love, even if it is not special, it's only the person who is involved who can feel like the way it is in the movies.

Key: Woah! This is well said.Personally, I feel that is a romance story that can only happen in the movies, highly likely in real life.Everyone should be dreaming of this kind of love in their dreams right.Love is something very magical. I feel things like giving out the soulis highly improbable to happen.

VG: Recently, there are a lot of comments saying that SHINee are "herbivorous guys".

SHINee: (all with widened eyes) What is a "herbivorous guy"?

VG:It refers to men who do not accept love manly, and are very tamed and gentle in their personality. Just like a deer to who eats grass.

Onew: Woah. This expression is fascinating.

Jonghyun: If there is really such a saying, it's my first time hearing it today. Our image has been set as this.

Key: We are like those who eat grass for living. Haha.

Jonghyun: It means that we are kind. Keke.

VG: There is an interesting 'herbivorous guy' test, do you want to do it?

SHINee:Sure! (VG: There are 9 questions in total, you just have to answer"yes" or "no".) We will answer well given the questions.

VG:1) I feel that dueling is meaningless. 2) It's alright to drink soft drinks when people are having bottoms up during gatherings. 3) When I receive a confession, I will tell others first. 4) I don't really dislike manga that caters to young girls. 5) Even though you get along well with your female friends but you really develop into a relationship with them 6) You are very interested in the new products in the convenience store 7) When you do work, you must have tidbits such as biscuits beside you. 8) Compared to going out, I prefer to stay at home. 9) Rather than spending money on the opposite sex, I would rather spend money on my hobby. If you have 2 or less 'yes' than you are a 20%herbivorous guy, 2-5 then you are 60%, 6 and above you are 90%.

Key: Haha. I have 6! What to do!

Jonghyun: Haha. 90%? The king of the herbivorous guy! Onew hyung seems to have a lot too.

Onew: Nope, I am 20%

Jonghyun: I have 2, so I am 20%? Other than dueling is meaningless, and it's alright to drink soft drinks at gatherings, the rest are not true. I don't really read tidbits and I don't like pure mangas.

Taemin: I am 20%.

Jonghyun: Minho should be "no" all the way right? Let's do one. Is dueling interesting?

Minho: Yeah, interesting.

Jonghyun: So it's like this.

Minho: There's only one that is true. I like hobby more, but I want to be able to do something that is my hobby with my girlfriend.

Key: Ah then doesn't that tend to "no"?

Jonghyun: Anyway, a herbivorous guy seem to refer to a guy who is very sensitive and detailed in personality? Someone who is not stingy to invest in himself. Ah, then Key fits the bill. (laughs)

Key: Agree! I really invest a lot in my interests and hobbies. Because my interests are always changing so I spend a lot of money. Buying organiser,camera, clothes, my latest obsession is fashion!

Jonghyun: I am also interested in fashion, and read many fashion magazine too. Recently I saw the design concepts of John Galliano Homme and Andrea Crews, and got a shock from the unique designs.

VG: Everyone's schedule is packed but we heard that you are still reading avidly?

Jonghyun: I read science fiction and fantasy novels. I also like mysteries and gory comics. Recently, I have been reading Edgar Allen Poe's [Poe's Short Stories Collection]

Onew: Regardless of the genre, I read many different kinds of books. Reading is helpful in writing lyrics.

Minho:I like books such as the guide to life or tales of the great people in history. I can learn about what the great people were thinking when they were my age and what kind of life they led. It also helps to solve the problems of I have in life.

VG: Recently, reality shows has been gaining a lot of popularity. Compared to other idol groups, SHINee members seemed to be quite stingy when it comes to revealing their true selves.

Minho: Even though it's a little lesser as compared to other groups, we are not trying to conceal it intentionally. We feel that this degree is pretty good. There may be no difference to us even when we reach the point when we can say anything out without concealing anything, it will still be the same as now.

Jonghyun: Yes. Minho is very manly. Taemin is very cute. Key is very bubbly. Onew hyung is as gentle as his name. This is us.

Key: Friends who are curious can go watch [SHINee's Yunhanam]. You can see our real life after watching it. (laughs)

Jonghyun: It's very fascinating. The fans will not be mindful about our personalities being this way but will have a lot of comments to say if we were just to change our hairstyles just a little. Yet when it comes to our personalities, they don't really say much.

Key: Maybe it's because we know that we have this image that we have to adhere to, so it's not about other things.

Jonghyun: It's not just me but the activities are done with all the SHINee members so I cannot just do what I want. So there is really nothing much to be fake about, it's just being cautious so as not to make mistakes.

VG: The show where idol group members become boyfriends for a week has become a hot topic, have you heard of it? If SHINee members were to appear on that show, how would you feel?

Minho: I have only heard of it. I chanced upon it when I was channel surfing awhile back. I don't really watch TV, just the show "Infinity Challenge".

Taemin: What is that show about? (Jonghyun explains briefly) There is such a show? This is my first time hearing about it.

Onew: Even though I know of this show, I never watched it so I don't really understand what it is about.

Key: It's not to the extent that we want to reject it if there is the offer for us to go onto the show.

Jonghyun: I don't really feel like going. Not very willing, I feel a little apologetic about it.

Minho: It's a "fake" girlfriend. Rather than that, I would rather have a real girlfriend. Even if we do go out with each other sincerely for a week,it is also not real. I wish to present a real side of me in the show,so when during filming, I always put in effort, and at certain moments I will even do something that I did not expect. I won't want to cheat anyone.

VG: If you have a girlfriend, what do you want to do the most?

Onew: Go to a really crowded playground and confess to her loudly. To be able to confess in front of so many people takes a lot of courage so it really shows love. My girlfriend will be likely to believe me then too.

Minho: I want to watch a movie, and also a soccer match. If my girlfriend can do it, I want to play soccer with her too. But in reality many people don't really like it. So just having a meal together is happy too. (VG:Such simple things to normal couples are actually difficult to attain for idols right.) Of course, that's why I can't do it now but rather in the future. A long time into the future. (laughs) (VG: Then have you heard of anything that makes you want to give up?) Absolutely not. At18 years old, it's a stage where you can't really do or experience anything, I feel that this kind of experience is the foundation of my life. In the future, whether I am still an entertainer or working in other fields, it will come in handy.

VG: What is SHINee's ideal "charismatic man" like?

Jonghyun: A man who is able to listen to the other party properly, knows the heart of the girl and is also able to take care of her very well.

Key: It's not easy! As long as he doesn't let the girl feel tired then it is good enough.

Onew: A man who is able to make his girlfriend happy is also charismatic too.

Key:Career and love, a man who doesn't neglect either side. As long as my girlfriend and I don't restrict each other then it will be good. Our time together is always fulfilling, when we play we really play, when we work we will be serious and work. We won't be unhappy and we are understanding of each other's lifestyle. My work is very important too,so I really hate it if she throws a temper unreasonable when I am trying to concentrate.

Taemin: A man who is good looking.

Key: A man with a good physique.

Taemin: A man who keeps to his promises too.

Minho: A man who is willing to give. Even if he can't do this for everyone, at least if he does it for jut one person, it will be good enough.

UW: Everyone calls FT Island the 'flower boys rock band'. Do you dislike this title?
Jaejin: No, we're happy to hear the term 'flower boys'. If you have a chance to come and watch our performance, you will be attracted by our music and not simply call us 'flower boys'.
Seunghyun: The title sounds nice. But we prefer to hear comments like 'a rock band with high music standards'.
Jonghoon: We prefer to receive compliments on our music.
Hongki: Yes. I think so too.

UW: Who do you think is the best representative of the title 'flower boy' in the group? (Anyone disagrees?)
Ans: Hongki! (4 members replied.)
Jaejin: No one can challenge his popularity. Looking at the presents he received from fans and all other factors, we can't challenge him in terms of popularity. He is the most popular member in the group, and also the most priced member. He's good-looking and can also sing very well. We have to admit that..

UW: Do you compare among yourselves who is the most handsome member in the group?
Ans: Jonghoon! (4 members replied.)
Jaejin: Hongki is pretty, the flower boy type. Jonghoon is handsome.

UW: If you were given a chance to talk about your best looking moment, special traits or looks?
Jaejin: I think I look good when I look at myself in the mirror right after a shower. I like my eyes and lips especially.

Jonghoon: I find myself sexy while playing the guitar. I like my nose and mouth. Eyes too!! :D
Hongki: I think I look good when I was slightly skinnier, singing on stage till I sweat. I like my forehead and also my side profile. Hello?? I still think you're skinny.

UW: Who is the 100% 'Rocker' in the group?
Hongki: Every one of us have a 'Rocker' feel. All of us can perform in a 'Rocker' style.

UW: Who nags a lot usually? Or likes to dominate?
Jonghoon, Hongki & Seunghyun: Jaejin!
Jonghoon: I think he cares about us.
LOL, Jaejin?? :D I have an "umma" image in my head now hahahaha

UW: Is there any changes to the way you work with each other (especially since new member, Song Seunghyun, replaces Oh Wonbin in April this year)? Can Seunghyun talk about how he adapts to the group within such a short period of time?
Seunghyun: I often bumped into the members at the studio before I joined the group, as I was a trainee from the same management company. So there wasn't really a feeling of being new. I'm in charge of the vocals, especially the rap in the band. Everyone treats me well so there's not much of a problem.
Other 3 members: We don't feel that he's a new member. It feels as if he debuted together with us in 2007.

UW: What was your first impression of Seunghyun?
Jonghoon, Hongki & Jaejin: We guessed that he is a positive person and he really was.

UW: Within 2 months after your debut in 2007, you have close to 100,000 fans & supporters? Were you amazed by the figures?
Ans: That was during the filming of a 'reality show' and we had to 'attract 100,000 supporters in order to get a chance to perform'. We didn't expect that we would succeed in obtaining the figures and were very touched.

UW: What was your biggest gain after debuting?
Jonghoon, Hongki & Jaejin: When we first debuted, we were really shy standing on stage and couldn't get used to facing the crowd during performances. But we're all used to it now and we've improved a lot in terms of stage presence during concerts and other performances.

UW: What was the most difficult experience you had before and after debut?
Hongki: I started out as a child actor and didn't really experience the feel of 'debuting'. After joining the group, all of us stay together at the same place. It's the first time we stay apart from our parents, relying on ourselves for everything. This was one difficult experience. After debuting, social interaction is difficult and we realised that we couldn't trust anyone easily.
Seunghyun: I was a trainee for one and a half years before debuting. I felt stressed when my singing skills made no improvement. Some people have been trainees for many years so I think I'm lucky.
Jaejin: I wasn't very tired during my two years as a trainee before debut.

UW: All of you are so young. How do you assure yourself to stay firm when dealing with fame, popularity and wealth?
Seunghyun: Exercising. It helps mentally.
Jaejin: To stay silent is the best way to relieve stress. I bet he wouldn't exercise haha! *recalls reality show where he and Minhwan failed the fitness test* :D
Hongki: To reflect on ourselves.

UW: There are many idol boy bands in the Korean music industry right now. What do you think is your unique point and how are you different from the other groups?
Hongki: We don't dance. We know how to compose and we can play the instruments. That is our special point.
Jaejin: Yes. That is the biggest difference. Other groups sing what people compose for them and they do not play the instruments themselves. But we compose, perform and sing the songs ourselves.

UW: Others said that they see hope for the development of the Rock & Roll industry in Korea after your successful debut. Do you think so too?
Hongki: Hmm.. That's too exaggerating. Are there people who really said that? Hopefully there will be more bands like us in future.

UW: How do you feel about the promotion of your 2nd Japanese single 'I believe myself' in Japan in April this year?
Jonghoon: The response from the Japanese fans were very good. Tickets were all sold out. We are always touched by the response from our Japanese fans.

UW: Can you talk about the 'Live Concert Rock Prince (Live Album)' DVD that was released in May?
Jaejin: We used 'Rock Prince' as our theme and held concert tours in the country. This is the concert DVD recorded then. We even danced a little during the concerts to show the audience a different side of us. Oh yes, that DVD is a recording of the Seoul concert so there won't be any dance footage. Ha! Too bad. Evilllllllllllllll.

UW: Can you talk about your own music aspirations? Ever wanted to try acting? (Choi Minhwan had a filming schedule for KBS drama 'Road Home'; and was not able to join in this interview.)
Hongki: I debuted as a child actor. I acted in several dramas when I was younger. I was a very popular child actor then! Hopefully there will be more chances of acting in future.
Jaejin: I just finished the musical 'Sonagi' in Seoul in May. Now preparing for the Busan ones. I've acted in a sitcom before. Of course, music is still the most important to us, though we would like to try out acting as well.
Jonghoon: I want to try out both singing and acting too.
Seunghyun: I want to try out things which I've not done before. My childhood ambition was to be a movie star. As long as it doesn't affect my music career, I wouldn't mind trying.

Reporter's Notes:

On the day of the interview with FT Island, other than Choi Minhwan who had a filming schedule, the other members woke up at 9am, attended two fansigning sessions and when they came for the interview with 'U-Weekly' at the salon at 7pm, they're all exhausted. But after hearing that it's an interview with the Singapore media, they all smiled. You can tell how much they're looking forward to the Singapore trip. From the interview, I can tell that Hongki is the confident type; Jonghoon & Seunghyun are more quiet and Jonghoon is really good-looking in person. Jaejin is very caring. When he noticed my spelling mistake, he even pointed it out. That's why the other members claimed that he's the most caring member in the group.

It's already 9pm when the interview ended. The sky is already dark but we still saw about 50 fans waiting outside the salon for the boys. Their manager revealed that, due to these crazy fans, they have already shifted their hostel for 4 times and 3 times for their studio and office. Though they're thankful for the fans' support, but it could really become a headache when fans try to get overboard to get near to them.

Sacrificing studies for their singing career, Korean boy band, FT Island, debuted in their teens and missed out the wonderful school memories.

FT Island consists of the following 5 members – Choi Jonghoon, Lee Hongki, Song Seunghyun, Lee Jaejin and Choi Minhwan. They were invited by the organizer, DATZENTERTAINMENT, to hold their very first showcase in Singapore. They arrived in Singapore last Friday, walking out with protective masks. Despite the H1N1 situation, there were about 200 fans locally as well as overseas from countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and more who flew in to catch the boys at the airport.

When asked about their first impression of Singapore, FT Island said, “We actually read some information on the internet before coming over and we’re looking forward to perform here! Singapore is very clean and we have a good impression of Singapore!”

It was only 2 years since FT Island debuted. Members’ age ranges from 16 to 19, which means the youngest members, Choi Minhwan and Song Seunghyun, debuted at as young as 14 years old. Some of the members are currently still schooling.

Guitar and vocalist, Song Seunghyun, even joked that, “If we do our work well, our school grades shouldn’t be bad too,” he continued, “If we work hard, we’ll succeed.”

However, there are also things that they might have regretted for debuting at a young age. Vocalist, Lee Hongki, expressed, “Things come at a price. We do not have wonderful memories of schooling, going for school excursions, camps, etc. It was regretful that we’re unable to take part in these activities.”

Comparing yourselves with other bands?
“We only want to perform well.”

How about comparing yourselves with Dong Bang Shin Ki, SS501 and other KPOP bands? FT Island expressed that they only want to perform well.

The 5 members showed their team spirit at the press conference. They were often seen joking around with each other, laughing, showing their close relationships.

However, one of the members, Song Seunghyun, only joined the band early this year, to replace former member, Oh Wonbin. He expressed that, “It was stressful in the beginning because I have to keep up the pace with the other members. But I am already able to adapt now.”

Actually, there are quite a number of Korean bands currently, like Dong Bang Shin Ki, SS501, SG Wannabe, etc.

What does FT Island have to do to be different from the others?

Lee Hongki expressed, “We don’t look at it as a challenge. We only want to perform well and will not think too much on other matters.”

I didn't get to see Ft Island when they came to Singapore and what are the chances of them ever coming again huh? It's a big fat miracle that they even know Singapore. And I so wanted to see Hongki and Jong Hoon ): And the most depressing thing like Joy and XYZ and another of our junior said: "We are in 40km radius of Ft Island!" At least we're close, kinda. Hahahaha :D

They regret not being in school to create lovely memories. I think it's kind of sad, school can be a fun place even with the haphazard piles of homework and the endless tests. I can't really imagine not seeing my friends, and returning to school occasionally for lessons, and not being familiar with the people :\ It would be lonely I think. Well, at least they got each other! :) Brotherly love is super touching, awwwww :D

Funny thing, almost all the artistes regardless of where they come from, have the same impression of Singapore - It's VERY clean, and it is VERY beautiful like a garden. Sometimes, it makes me wonder how dirty can their country be, lol. (No offence and neither is this a mockery) In any case, I am desperate inw anting to go to Korea, and we here in Jumping nutz LOVE everything Korean :D

I hope there's gonna be a Kpop concert this year, heck if it lands in the middle of my promos, I'm so gonna go manz. I remember XYZ, klAss and myself going absolutely nuts during the concert and even tried to catch a glimpse of 2PM and Wonder Girls :B Heh.

So Ft Island, if you ever read this, come again soon cause your fans are waiting for you!

SHINee has just recently released their new mini-album 'ROMEO' on the 25th with the new concept of 'Romeo & Juliet' in mind. The title song 'Juliette' also contains a special meaning: SHINee is Romeo and their fans are Juliet. Therefore, this new album is a gift from Romeo to his most beloved Juliet.


The album's songs are mapped out as a story that is similar to 'Romeo & Juliet'. SHINee explains, "If you look at the tracklist, you will realize that the whole album actually tells a story. Starting from the first song, the content of each song resembles 'Romeo and Juliet'.

From the boy and girl's first meeting (Talk to You), the boy confesses that he will 'give up his soul for her' (Juliette). But the couple suddenly has a fight with each other (Hit Me Baby). The girl leaves and the boy becomes depressed because of his newfound loneliness (Senorita). The boy tries his hardest to beg the girl not to leave (Please, Don't Go), but their story ends as tragically as Romeo & Juliet's (Romeo + Juliette).

After Jonghyun watched Olivia Hussey's 'Romeo & Juliet', he wrote the lyrics to the title song, "Juliette". He says, "I wanted a love story that was recognizable to everyone, and at the time, I had just finished watching 'Romeo & Juliet'. So in my lyrics, I tried to incorporate the beautiful language that was in the movie."

Ever since debut, SHINee has captured the hearts of noonas everywhere. Onew says, "On Rose Day, we went around to many places to give out roses in order to promote our new album. At the time, I was really happy that so many women screamed for us in the streets."

In just a year, SHINee has had many hit songs and won numerous awards. By dressing in really colorful clothing and singing different genres of songs, SHINee's image is deeply embedded in the audience's minds.

On their first year anniversary, Onew said, "We are not newcomers anymore. Now is the time for SHINee to create their own image and place in the industry. After debut, we have experienced many new things. Even though our voices, dances, and fashion sense has improved, we are still not satisfied."

The members currently live in an apartment with 4 bedrooms. But everyone still sleeps together in one room with bunk beds. They originally decided to sleep in the same room in order to build up their team unity, but now the members say that if they do not sleep together in the same room, then it feels really strange.

Key also insisted, "Although our personalities and habits are different, everyone is able to learn a lot from everyone else. Instead of saying that we are good friends, we should be a called a family instead. We are a family."

Average age 19.2. Debut age 9 months. No matter how much we look they are young. These people gave us the wings of fantasy regarding YunHaNams in 2008. The 5 guys say noona is so pretty and who would not like that?

When I met SHINee at the set maybe because they received a lot of love from the noonas they seemed buff. They answered each question calmly without getting puzzled. They are the youngest of the SM artists and I could tell they grew up in good conditions by looking at their expressions and behaviors. Without any complaints they do what they need to do. “Since you are adored a lot don’t you avoid doing harsh chores like cleaning the practice room floor?”

“Cleaning the practice room is not harsh. The last person who used it should clean it up.” (Jonghyun) “Is that harsh?” (Key) Maybe I was naive for expecting complaints from them.

SHINee cried 5 times in public. The saying that guys cry 3 times in their life is not true. Jonghyun looked back to the past and brought back those memories. “When we debuted, when we had our 1st performance, got 1st place 2 times and winning the newcomer award.” Key who is next to him whispers “I cried 4 times.” Jonghyun was picked as the most emotional member in the group. Leader Onew says “Jonghyun is a very good talker but he is a good crier too.” Minho and Taemin who is younger takes care of the hyungs and comforts them. Key who likes to play jokes calls them ‘Kids with no emotions.’

When the 5 of them are together they get along well. Onew is used to taking care of the members quietly. Seeing him organize the member’s words didn’t seem common and I found out he trained the longest out of the members. He attended the SM Academy for trainees and got casted at SNSD’s showcase. Jonghyun and Key are the mood makers. If Jonghyun makes an insider joke, Key finishes it with an outsider joke.

For example, if he talks about Minho’s eyes Jonghyun says “Minho has the eyes of a cow” instead. Onew asks kindly “Why is it cow and not a deer?” Then Key says “The animal that represents Korea is a cow.”

Jonghyun's lively personality came from participating in a band since Junior High. He was in charge of the base and chorus and his interest in music was different. I was curious about how he went to a boy band from a regular band and he said "I started out in band music and in high school i started liking punk music. My liking for punk music gradually changed to African music. I listened to a lot of genres so i don't think there is any music i don't like. I think the music that comes out these days is hybrid."

Jonghyun's joke partner Key, is the Almighty Key in the team. The youngest Taemin wants to take after Key hyung. It's because he is good at rap, singing and dancing. I think traveling from his hometown Daegu to Seoul, studying and training together had a part in it.

Minho who talks with his eyes rather than actual talking was casted on the streets. Thanks to his tall height and great body he was able to participate in the Ha SangBaek and Andre Kim Fashion show. He appeared in SNSD's new album gee music video and was envied by the members. Jonghyun says he didn't hear about what happened at the set and blamed Minho's quiet personality for it.

Taemin is the adorable maknae filled with cute charms. "I like to attend school and going to my schedule is fun too." "When other students come to take pictures with me my classmates tell him no and make them leave. There is a reason for that. It's because they give us food to eat."

SHINee is not just a idol. They are a well made idol. They are not satisfied with just satisfying the people's taste. They surpassed our expectations of an idol. Their motto is "contemporary band." They want to become a boyband that creates and starts new trends. If its singing, singing, if its dance, dance, if its fashion, fashion. SHINee is showing great talents in these areas. Comparing the time when i was disgusted with the blushing idol group performances they have captivated me. This is also the power that made the noonas open their wallets.

SHINee who made a strong connection with the noonas seemed embarassed about this. "We don't just have noona fans. When we do fansigns, we had many chances to meet the fans and as we attend more of those events the fanbase gets wider. (Jonghyun)" "The youngest Taemin was 16 when he debuted so he had gained a lot of noona fans. When they are the same age as me or younger, they can be noonas to Taemin. (Onew)" They who sang Noona is so Pretty seemed anxious about noonas. When they were recorded Key wondered how he can express the feelings of love for a noona.

The noona KO loses, average age of 19.2 SHINee wins.

VG: How is the concept behind today's shoot? It was set with the intention of showing the hidden sexiness that only SHINee has. Who amongst the 5members was able to digest this concept the best?

Onew: (without hesitating) It's Jonghyun!

Jonghyun:The 5 of us have a different kind of sexiness. Minho is gentlemanly as well as sexy, Taemin allows people to feel the cute but also slightly sexy side of people of his age, the reversal is interesting. In actual fact I have also heard people saying that I am sexy too. (laughs)

Key: In SHINee, the member who is the icon of sexiness is Jonghyun hyung!

Onew: Even so, the 5 members are the most sexy on stage because the expression and voice can only be spread in that moment.

Jonghyun: That is the power that a man can exude. We may not have very well toned muscles, but we do have a few kind of manly charms.

VG:Last time when we knew you all, you were all really skinny. Now that we meet again today, you seemed to have become more well built?

Jonghyun:We have all been working hard to exercise. In order to train and manage our physical strength, we have been exercising everyday. Actually, when we practice dancing, it's also ample exercising.

VG: Everyone has been trying to lose weight right?

Key:Because we have a special eating place that we are designated to eat at, we have no choice. It's hard to stick to an 'one food' diet.

Taemin: We are accustomed to not eating when it is late.

Key:Especially if we have a performance the next day, we definitely cannot eat as it is highly likely that our faces will be bloated.

Jonghyun: Even so, there will still be times when we will secretly sneak in a bite. (laughs)

VG:If you become even thinner than now, the noona fans will be worried! Everytime we mention SHINee now, there will always be comments like'the noonas' wish' that pop out.

Jonghyun: Actually we do have a lot of noona fans and the spread of our fans is actually more diverse than we thought. We are very thankful. It will be good if we can extend the spread even more.

Key: No matter what, the noona fans and the fans in our age group express their love differently from other people.

Jonghyun: Yes. They really take care of us kindly, showing concern, sometimes treating us like their dongsengs. Yes, just like how they will treat their blood related dongsengs, or maybe even a relative or the dongseng living next door? A noona who fumbles occasionally. (laughs)

VG: Which member has the highest popularity amongst the noona fans?

Jonghyun: Of course it's our maknae Taemin.

Onew: A fan who is the same age as me is a noona to Taemin.

Taemin:There was a noona fan who told me "When I eat, I want to lay out your eating utensils and dishes for you". Because it's something that I heard during debut, it became the "most impressionable love attack"line that I have heard so far, a irreplaceable number one spot for me.

VG:It's been a year since your interview with [VOGUE GIRL] a week after your debut, and we finally meet again. Compared to the times when you sang "Noona you are so pretty", everyone has matured a lot.

Key: The members have all changed a lot. It's hard to pinpoint what exactly.

Onew: Everyone has grown both physically and mentally.

Minho: We have learned a lot after debuting for a year. We are still the same,after dispelling our curiosity of the stage, we now have a new query about it.

Taemin: In handling every single moment, we seem to be more experienced with time. In the past we used to be very nervous to go on stage, now we are very natural and we also know how to give a better performance.

Jonghyun: It's not so much about dispelling the nervousness, it's more of throwing away the unnecessary external pressure, and completing the job with our utmost efforts.

Minho: We seem to have mature after having a taste of the working society life. We have also grown taller by a lot...

Jonghyun:Taemin and Minho have really grown a lot! At the rate they are growing,maybe they can even shoot past the ceilings. (laughs)

VG: Before you made your comeback with the second mini album, you rested for 4 months. How did you spend it?

Jonghyun: Every single day was spent practising the song and dance. Everyone was busy with returning to the stage, and was also curious about the response of the fans to 'Juliette'.

Onew: Because we that only practice had improve our abilities, so we did not rest for even a day.Because with practice doesn't lie. (i.e. if you practice, there will be results to show)

Minho: Everyone will think of resting but we really did not rest. Because the time to rest is the chance for us to develop even more. During promotional activities, we hardly have time to practice because our schedule is so packed. If during practice I was unable to do well, I will try to compensate for it during my next activity. That gives me a sense of contentment personally. (VG: Your hunger for winning is very strong.) I hate losing to others. (VG: You must be very alike to your soccer coach father?) My mother is also like this. My father's hunger for winning is really amazing. (VG: With such a hunger for winning, don't you want to be a soccer player?) I really want to. When my hyung and I were born, we decided to learn soccer with our hearts set on it. To become a soccer player was just obvious but our father objected to it. He understood better than anyone else that soccer is very tiring, but thanks to him, I was able to become a member of SHINee so I do not regret it.

VG: To receive first place upon comeback is really exceptional.

Jonghyun: We only knew that we were in contention for first place on that day itself.

VG: Isn't it informed to you the day before?

Key: It has always been on the day itself.

Jonghyun:We were already happy to be candidates, but in the end we really got first! We got a shock but were also very very happy. It just so happened that the Super Junior sunbaenims were around, and they sincerely congratulated us and were happy for us. The sunbaenims were also teary too.

Key: I was trying hard to contain my tears on stage but the moment I got off stage I started crying.

Minho: I felt like crying when I saw Super Junior sunbaenim. I was very touched to receive the sunbaenims' well wishes.

VG: No matter what, you all are from the same company so you will be closer right?

Jonghyun:Of course. We were role models to each other so that gave us a lot of strength. When we got first, the sunbaenims will message to congratulate us. Because everyone knows how much hard work has been put in before we could receive that first place, it feels like we are all on the same boat.

VG: Because the song that you composed got first place, Jonghyun-goon cried really badly?

Jonghyun:I was really thankful. It is just a hobby that I was developing so to have such a result, I was very astounded but also very happy. (VG:Composing can also be considered as a hobby?) Because I am not a professional composer now, it can only be an interesting hobby to me.In the future, I will work hard in leaning how to compose melody in order to become a singer-songwriter.

Onew: I also wish to be the same as Jonghyun.

Key:The company did not especially appoint Jonghyun hyung to write the lyrics. They gave everyone the opportunity but in the end, Jonghyun hyung grabbed it. The lyrics was written well and it became our title track. Everyone also learnt some acting but it was Taemin who got the guesting on the sitcom, doing acting recently.

VG: How does Taemin feel about doing acting?

Taemin: It's really interesting! If there is the chance, I want to do it simultaneously with my schedule as a singer.

Key:In the future we will be showing everyone such individual activities like these. Do look forward to seeing the members growing up gradually,to how they are changing. It will be good if new groups in the future say "We want to be like the SHINee hyungs."

VG: Reading the lyrics of 'Juliette', there are meaningful lines such as 'give you my soul'. What are the actual romance types of the members?

Jonghyun:I was inspired to write the lyrics after watching the movie . At that time, I looked up to the courageous man who was fearless of death. In the movie, Romeo is as old as Taemin and he is even younger than me. I felt that the courage is really remarkable.

Minho:Because up till now I haven't been in love before...So I am not too sure about love...Yes, so I am not too sure about what kind of romance I want to have, just imagining it occasionally. I will want to try the passionate romance in too. A love with someone who is about the same age as me but is also interesting and cute. Hmmm, I can only know how to love when I really get to that stage. (laughs)

Jonghyun: When you are in love, even if it is not special, it's only the person who is involved who can feel like the way it is in the movies.

Key: Woah! This is well said.Personally, I feel that is a romance story that can only happen in the movies, highly likely in real life.Everyone should be dreaming of this kind of love in their dreams right.Love is something very magical. I feel things like giving out the soulis highly improbable to happen.

VG: Recently, there are a lot of comments saying that SHINee are "herbivorous guys".

SHINee: (all with widened eyes) What is a "herbivorous guy"?

VG:It refers to men who do not accept love manly, and are very tamed and gentle in their personality. Just like a deer to who eats grass.

Onew: Woah. This expression is fascinating.

Jonghyun: If there is really such a saying, it's my first time hearing it today. Our image has been set as this.

Key: We are like those who eat grass for living. Haha.

Jonghyun: It means that we are kind. Keke.

VG: There is an interesting 'herbivorous guy' test, do you want to do it?

SHINee:Sure! (VG: There are 9 questions in total, you just have to answer"yes" or "no".) We will answer well given the questions.

VG:1) I feel that dueling is meaningless. 2) It's alright to drink soft drinks when people are having bottoms up during gatherings. 3) When I receive a confession, I will tell others first. 4) I don't really dislike manga that caters to young girls. 5) Even though you get along well with your female friends but you really develop into a relationship with them 6) You are very interested in the new products in the convenience store 7) When you do work, you must have tidbits such as biscuits beside you. 8) Compared to going out, I prefer to stay at home. 9) Rather than spending money on the opposite sex, I would rather spend money on my hobby. If you have 2 or less 'yes' than you are a 20%herbivorous guy, 2-5 then you are 60%, 6 and above you are 90%.

Key: Haha. I have 6! What to do!

Jonghyun: Haha. 90%? The king of the herbivorous guy! Onew hyung seems to have a lot too.

Onew: Nope, I am 20%

Jonghyun: I have 2, so I am 20%? Other than dueling is meaningless, and it's alright to drink soft drinks at gatherings, the rest are not true. I don't really read tidbits and I don't like pure mangas.

Taemin: I am 20%.

Jonghyun: Minho should be "no" all the way right? Let's do one. Is dueling interesting?

Minho: Yeah, interesting.

Jonghyun: So it's like this.

Minho: There's only one that is true. I like hobby more, but I want to be able to do something that is my hobby with my girlfriend.

Key: Ah then doesn't that tend to "no"?

Jonghyun: Anyway, a herbivorous guy seem to refer to a guy who is very sensitive and detailed in personality? Someone who is not stingy to invest in himself. Ah, then Key fits the bill. (laughs)

Key: Agree! I really invest a lot in my interests and hobbies. Because my interests are always changing so I spend a lot of money. Buying organiser,camera, clothes, my latest obsession is fashion!

Jonghyun: I am also interested in fashion, and read many fashion magazine too. Recently I saw the design concepts of John Galliano Homme and Andrea Crews, and got a shock from the unique designs.

VG: Everyone's schedule is packed but we heard that you are still reading avidly?

Jonghyun: I read science fiction and fantasy novels. I also like mysteries and gory comics. Recently, I have been reading Edgar Allen Poe's [Poe's Short Stories Collection]

Onew: Regardless of the genre, I read many different kinds of books. Reading is helpful in writing lyrics.

Minho:I like books such as the guide to life or tales of the great people in history. I can learn about what the great people were thinking when they were my age and what kind of life they led. It also helps to solve the problems of I have in life.

VG: Recently, reality shows has been gaining a lot of popularity. Compared to other idol groups, SHINee members seemed to be quite stingy when it comes to revealing their true selves.

Minho: Even though it's a little lesser as compared to other groups, we are not trying to conceal it intentionally. We feel that this degree is pretty good. There may be no difference to us even when we reach the point when we can say anything out without concealing anything, it will still be the same as now.

Jonghyun: Yes. Minho is very manly. Taemin is very cute. Key is very bubbly. Onew hyung is as gentle as his name. This is us.

Key: Friends who are curious can go watch [SHINee's Yunhanam]. You can see our real life after watching it. (laughs)

Jonghyun: It's very fascinating. The fans will not be mindful about our personalities being this way but will have a lot of comments to say if we were just to change our hairstyles just a little. Yet when it comes to our personalities, they don't really say much.

Key: Maybe it's because we know that we have this image that we have to adhere to, so it's not about other things.

Jonghyun: It's not just me but the activities are done with all the SHINee members so I cannot just do what I want. So there is really nothing much to be fake about, it's just being cautious so as not to make mistakes.

VG: The show where idol group members become boyfriends for a week has become a hot topic, have you heard of it? If SHINee members were to appear on that show, how would you feel?

Minho: I have only heard of it. I chanced upon it when I was channel surfing awhile back. I don't really watch TV, just the show "Infinity Challenge".

Taemin: What is that show about? (Jonghyun explains briefly) There is such a show? This is my first time hearing about it.

Onew: Even though I know of this show, I never watched it so I don't really understand what it is about.

Key: It's not to the extent that we want to reject it if there is the offer for us to go onto the show.

Jonghyun: I don't really feel like going. Not very willing, I feel a little apologetic about it.

Minho: It's a "fake" girlfriend. Rather than that, I would rather have a real girlfriend. Even if we do go out with each other sincerely for a week,it is also not real. I wish to present a real side of me in the show,so when during filming, I always put in effort, and at certain moments I will even do something that I did not expect. I won't want to cheat anyone.

VG: If you have a girlfriend, what do you want to do the most?

Onew: Go to a really crowded playground and confess to her loudly. To be able to confess in front of so many people takes a lot of courage so it really shows love. My girlfriend will be likely to believe me then too.

Minho: I want to watch a movie, and also a soccer match. If my girlfriend can do it, I want to play soccer with her too. But in reality many people don't really like it. So just having a meal together is happy too. (VG:Such simple things to normal couples are actually difficult to attain for idols right.) Of course, that's why I can't do it now but rather in the future. A long time into the future. (laughs) (VG: Then have you heard of anything that makes you want to give up?) Absolutely not. At18 years old, it's a stage where you can't really do or experience anything, I feel that this kind of experience is the foundation of my life. In the future, whether I am still an entertainer or working in other fields, it will come in handy.

VG: What is SHINee's ideal "charismatic man" like?

Jonghyun: A man who is able to listen to the other party properly, knows the heart of the girl and is also able to take care of her very well.

Key: It's not easy! As long as he doesn't let the girl feel tired then it is good enough.

Onew: A man who is able to make his girlfriend happy is also charismatic too.

Key:Career and love, a man who doesn't neglect either side. As long as my girlfriend and I don't restrict each other then it will be good. Our time together is always fulfilling, when we play we really play, when we work we will be serious and work. We won't be unhappy and we are understanding of each other's lifestyle. My work is very important too,so I really hate it if she throws a temper unreasonable when I am trying to concentrate.

Taemin: A man who is good looking.

Key: A man with a good physique.

Taemin: A man who keeps to his promises too.

Minho: A man who is willing to give. Even if he can't do this for everyone, at least if he does it for jut one person, it will be good enough.

UW: Everyone calls FT Island the 'flower boys rock band'. Do you dislike this title?
Jaejin: No, we're happy to hear the term 'flower boys'. If you have a chance to come and watch our performance, you will be attracted by our music and not simply call us 'flower boys'.
Seunghyun: The title sounds nice. But we prefer to hear comments like 'a rock band with high music standards'.
Jonghoon: We prefer to receive compliments on our music.
Hongki: Yes. I think so too.

UW: Who do you think is the best representative of the title 'flower boy' in the group? (Anyone disagrees?)
Ans: Hongki! (4 members replied.)
Jaejin: No one can challenge his popularity. Looking at the presents he received from fans and all other factors, we can't challenge him in terms of popularity. He is the most popular member in the group, and also the most priced member. He's good-looking and can also sing very well. We have to admit that..

UW: Do you compare among yourselves who is the most handsome member in the group?
Ans: Jonghoon! (4 members replied.)
Jaejin: Hongki is pretty, the flower boy type. Jonghoon is handsome.

UW: If you were given a chance to talk about your best looking moment, special traits or looks?
Jaejin: I think I look good when I look at myself in the mirror right after a shower. I like my eyes and lips especially.

Jonghoon: I find myself sexy while playing the guitar. I like my nose and mouth. Eyes too!! :D
Hongki: I think I look good when I was slightly skinnier, singing on stage till I sweat. I like my forehead and also my side profile. Hello?? I still think you're skinny.

UW: Who is the 100% 'Rocker' in the group?
Hongki: Every one of us have a 'Rocker' feel. All of us can perform in a 'Rocker' style.

UW: Who nags a lot usually? Or likes to dominate?
Jonghoon, Hongki & Seunghyun: Jaejin!
Jonghoon: I think he cares about us.
LOL, Jaejin?? :D I have an "umma" image in my head now hahahaha

UW: Is there any changes to the way you work with each other (especially since new member, Song Seunghyun, replaces Oh Wonbin in April this year)? Can Seunghyun talk about how he adapts to the group within such a short period of time?
Seunghyun: I often bumped into the members at the studio before I joined the group, as I was a trainee from the same management company. So there wasn't really a feeling of being new. I'm in charge of the vocals, especially the rap in the band. Everyone treats me well so there's not much of a problem.
Other 3 members: We don't feel that he's a new member. It feels as if he debuted together with us in 2007.

UW: What was your first impression of Seunghyun?
Jonghoon, Hongki & Jaejin: We guessed that he is a positive person and he really was.

UW: Within 2 months after your debut in 2007, you have close to 100,000 fans & supporters? Were you amazed by the figures?
Ans: That was during the filming of a 'reality show' and we had to 'attract 100,000 supporters in order to get a chance to perform'. We didn't expect that we would succeed in obtaining the figures and were very touched.

UW: What was your biggest gain after debuting?
Jonghoon, Hongki & Jaejin: When we first debuted, we were really shy standing on stage and couldn't get used to facing the crowd during performances. But we're all used to it now and we've improved a lot in terms of stage presence during concerts and other performances.

UW: What was the most difficult experience you had before and after debut?
Hongki: I started out as a child actor and didn't really experience the feel of 'debuting'. After joining the group, all of us stay together at the same place. It's the first time we stay apart from our parents, relying on ourselves for everything. This was one difficult experience. After debuting, social interaction is difficult and we realised that we couldn't trust anyone easily.
Seunghyun: I was a trainee for one and a half years before debuting. I felt stressed when my singing skills made no improvement. Some people have been trainees for many years so I think I'm lucky.
Jaejin: I wasn't very tired during my two years as a trainee before debut.

UW: All of you are so young. How do you assure yourself to stay firm when dealing with fame, popularity and wealth?
Seunghyun: Exercising. It helps mentally.
Jaejin: To stay silent is the best way to relieve stress. I bet he wouldn't exercise haha! *recalls reality show where he and Minhwan failed the fitness test* :D
Hongki: To reflect on ourselves.

UW: There are many idol boy bands in the Korean music industry right now. What do you think is your unique point and how are you different from the other groups?
Hongki: We don't dance. We know how to compose and we can play the instruments. That is our special point.
Jaejin: Yes. That is the biggest difference. Other groups sing what people compose for them and they do not play the instruments themselves. But we compose, perform and sing the songs ourselves.

UW: Others said that they see hope for the development of the Rock & Roll industry in Korea after your successful debut. Do you think so too?
Hongki: Hmm.. That's too exaggerating. Are there people who really said that? Hopefully there will be more bands like us in future.

UW: How do you feel about the promotion of your 2nd Japanese single 'I believe myself' in Japan in April this year?
Jonghoon: The response from the Japanese fans were very good. Tickets were all sold out. We are always touched by the response from our Japanese fans.

UW: Can you talk about the 'Live Concert Rock Prince (Live Album)' DVD that was released in May?
Jaejin: We used 'Rock Prince' as our theme and held concert tours in the country. This is the concert DVD recorded then. We even danced a little during the concerts to show the audience a different side of us. Oh yes, that DVD is a recording of the Seoul concert so there won't be any dance footage. Ha! Too bad. Evilllllllllllllll.

UW: Can you talk about your own music aspirations? Ever wanted to try acting? (Choi Minhwan had a filming schedule for KBS drama 'Road Home'; and was not able to join in this interview.)
Hongki: I debuted as a child actor. I acted in several dramas when I was younger. I was a very popular child actor then! Hopefully there will be more chances of acting in future.
Jaejin: I just finished the musical 'Sonagi' in Seoul in May. Now preparing for the Busan ones. I've acted in a sitcom before. Of course, music is still the most important to us, though we would like to try out acting as well.
Jonghoon: I want to try out both singing and acting too.
Seunghyun: I want to try out things which I've not done before. My childhood ambition was to be a movie star. As long as it doesn't affect my music career, I wouldn't mind trying.

Reporter's Notes:

On the day of the interview with FT Island, other than Choi Minhwan who had a filming schedule, the other members woke up at 9am, attended two fansigning sessions and when they came for the interview with 'U-Weekly' at the salon at 7pm, they're all exhausted. But after hearing that it's an interview with the Singapore media, they all smiled. You can tell how much they're looking forward to the Singapore trip. From the interview, I can tell that Hongki is the confident type; Jonghoon & Seunghyun are more quiet and Jonghoon is really good-looking in person. Jaejin is very caring. When he noticed my spelling mistake, he even pointed it out. That's why the other members claimed that he's the most caring member in the group.

It's already 9pm when the interview ended. The sky is already dark but we still saw about 50 fans waiting outside the salon for the boys. Their manager revealed that, due to these crazy fans, they have already shifted their hostel for 4 times and 3 times for their studio and office. Though they're thankful for the fans' support, but it could really become a headache when fans try to get overboard to get near to them.

Sacrificing studies for their singing career, Korean boy band, FT Island, debuted in their teens and missed out the wonderful school memories.

FT Island consists of the following 5 members – Choi Jonghoon, Lee Hongki, Song Seunghyun, Lee Jaejin and Choi Minhwan. They were invited by the organizer, DATZENTERTAINMENT, to hold their very first showcase in Singapore. They arrived in Singapore last Friday, walking out with protective masks. Despite the H1N1 situation, there were about 200 fans locally as well as overseas from countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and more who flew in to catch the boys at the airport.

When asked about their first impression of Singapore, FT Island said, “We actually read some information on the internet before coming over and we’re looking forward to perform here! Singapore is very clean and we have a good impression of Singapore!”

It was only 2 years since FT Island debuted. Members’ age ranges from 16 to 19, which means the youngest members, Choi Minhwan and Song Seunghyun, debuted at as young as 14 years old. Some of the members are currently still schooling.

Guitar and vocalist, Song Seunghyun, even joked that, “If we do our work well, our school grades shouldn’t be bad too,” he continued, “If we work hard, we’ll succeed.”

However, there are also things that they might have regretted for debuting at a young age. Vocalist, Lee Hongki, expressed, “Things come at a price. We do not have wonderful memories of schooling, going for school excursions, camps, etc. It was regretful that we’re unable to take part in these activities.”

Comparing yourselves with other bands?
“We only want to perform well.”

How about comparing yourselves with Dong Bang Shin Ki, SS501 and other KPOP bands? FT Island expressed that they only want to perform well.

The 5 members showed their team spirit at the press conference. They were often seen joking around with each other, laughing, showing their close relationships.

However, one of the members, Song Seunghyun, only joined the band early this year, to replace former member, Oh Wonbin. He expressed that, “It was stressful in the beginning because I have to keep up the pace with the other members. But I am already able to adapt now.”

Actually, there are quite a number of Korean bands currently, like Dong Bang Shin Ki, SS501, SG Wannabe, etc.

What does FT Island have to do to be different from the others?

Lee Hongki expressed, “We don’t look at it as a challenge. We only want to perform well and will not think too much on other matters.”

I didn't get to see Ft Island when they came to Singapore and what are the chances of them ever coming again huh? It's a big fat miracle that they even know Singapore. And I so wanted to see Hongki and Jong Hoon ): And the most depressing thing like Joy and XYZ and another of our junior said: "We are in 40km radius of Ft Island!" At least we're close, kinda. Hahahaha :D

They regret not being in school to create lovely memories. I think it's kind of sad, school can be a fun place even with the haphazard piles of homework and the endless tests. I can't really imagine not seeing my friends, and returning to school occasionally for lessons, and not being familiar with the people :\ It would be lonely I think. Well, at least they got each other! :) Brotherly love is super touching, awwwww :D

Funny thing, almost all the artistes regardless of where they come from, have the same impression of Singapore - It's VERY clean, and it is VERY beautiful like a garden. Sometimes, it makes me wonder how dirty can their country be, lol. (No offence and neither is this a mockery) In any case, I am desperate inw anting to go to Korea, and we here in Jumping nutz LOVE everything Korean :D

I hope there's gonna be a Kpop concert this year, heck if it lands in the middle of my promos, I'm so gonna go manz. I remember XYZ, klAss and myself going absolutely nuts during the concert and even tried to catch a glimpse of 2PM and Wonder Girls :B Heh.

SHINee has just recently released their new mini-album 'ROMEO' on the 25th with the new concept of 'Romeo & Juliet' in mind. The title song 'Juliette' also contains a special meaning: SHINee is Romeo and their fans are Juliet. Therefore, this new album is a gift from Romeo to his most beloved Juliet.


The album's songs are mapped out as a story that is similar to 'Romeo & Juliet'. SHINee explains, "If you look at the tracklist, you will realize that the whole album actually tells a story. Starting from the first song, the content of each song resembles 'Romeo and Juliet'.

From the boy and girl's first meeting (Talk to You), the boy confesses that he will 'give up his soul for her' (Juliette). But the couple suddenly has a fight with each other (Hit Me Baby). The girl leaves and the boy becomes depressed because of his newfound loneliness (Senorita). The boy tries his hardest to beg the girl not to leave (Please, Don't Go), but their story ends as tragically as Romeo & Juliet's (Romeo + Juliette).

After Jonghyun watched Olivia Hussey's 'Romeo & Juliet', he wrote the lyrics to the title song, "Juliette". He says, "I wanted a love story that was recognizable to everyone, and at the time, I had just finished watching 'Romeo & Juliet'. So in my lyrics, I tried to incorporate the beautiful language that was in the movie."

Ever since debut, SHINee has captured the hearts of noonas everywhere. Onew says, "On Rose Day, we went around to many places to give out roses in order to promote our new album. At the time, I was really happy that so many women screamed for us in the streets."

In just a year, SHINee has had many hit songs and won numerous awards. By dressing in really colorful clothing and singing different genres of songs, SHINee's image is deeply embedded in the audience's minds.

On their first year anniversary, Onew said, "We are not newcomers anymore. Now is the time for SHINee to create their own image and place in the industry. After debut, we have experienced many new things. Even though our voices, dances, and fashion sense has improved, we are still not satisfied."

The members currently live in an apartment with 4 bedrooms. But everyone still sleeps together in one room with bunk beds. They originally decided to sleep in the same room in order to build up their team unity, but now the members say that if they do not sleep together in the same room, then it feels really strange.

Key also insisted, "Although our personalities and habits are different, everyone is able to learn a lot from everyone else. Instead of saying that we are good friends, we should be a called a family instead. We are a family."

Average age 19.2. Debut age 9 months. No matter how much we look they are young. These people gave us the wings of fantasy regarding YunHaNams in 2008. The 5 guys say noona is so pretty and who would not like that?

When I met SHINee at the set maybe because they received a lot of love from the noonas they seemed buff. They answered each question calmly without getting puzzled. They are the youngest of the SM artists and I could tell they grew up in good conditions by looking at their expressions and behaviors. Without any complaints they do what they need to do. “Since you are adored a lot don’t you avoid doing harsh chores like cleaning the practice room floor?”

“Cleaning the practice room is not harsh. The last person who used it should clean it up.” (Jonghyun) “Is that harsh?” (Key) Maybe I was naive for expecting complaints from them.

SHINee cried 5 times in public. The saying that guys cry 3 times in their life is not true. Jonghyun looked back to the past and brought back those memories. “When we debuted, when we had our 1st performance, got 1st place 2 times and winning the newcomer award.” Key who is next to him whispers “I cried 4 times.” Jonghyun was picked as the most emotional member in the group. Leader Onew says “Jonghyun is a very good talker but he is a good crier too.” Minho and Taemin who is younger takes care of the hyungs and comforts them. Key who likes to play jokes calls them ‘Kids with no emotions.’

When the 5 of them are together they get along well. Onew is used to taking care of the members quietly. Seeing him organize the member’s words didn’t seem common and I found out he trained the longest out of the members. He attended the SM Academy for trainees and got casted at SNSD’s showcase. Jonghyun and Key are the mood makers. If Jonghyun makes an insider joke, Key finishes it with an outsider joke.

For example, if he talks about Minho’s eyes Jonghyun says “Minho has the eyes of a cow” instead. Onew asks kindly “Why is it cow and not a deer?” Then Key says “The animal that represents Korea is a cow.”

Jonghyun's lively personality came from participating in a band since Junior High. He was in charge of the base and chorus and his interest in music was different. I was curious about how he went to a boy band from a regular band and he said "I started out in band music and in high school i started liking punk music. My liking for punk music gradually changed to African music. I listened to a lot of genres so i don't think there is any music i don't like. I think the music that comes out these days is hybrid."

Jonghyun's joke partner Key, is the Almighty Key in the team. The youngest Taemin wants to take after Key hyung. It's because he is good at rap, singing and dancing. I think traveling from his hometown Daegu to Seoul, studying and training together had a part in it.

Minho who talks with his eyes rather than actual talking was casted on the streets. Thanks to his tall height and great body he was able to participate in the Ha SangBaek and Andre Kim Fashion show. He appeared in SNSD's new album gee music video and was envied by the members. Jonghyun says he didn't hear about what happened at the set and blamed Minho's quiet personality for it.

Taemin is the adorable maknae filled with cute charms. "I like to attend school and going to my schedule is fun too." "When other students come to take pictures with me my classmates tell him no and make them leave. There is a reason for that. It's because they give us food to eat."

SHINee is not just a idol. They are a well made idol. They are not satisfied with just satisfying the people's taste. They surpassed our expectations of an idol. Their motto is "contemporary band." They want to become a boyband that creates and starts new trends. If its singing, singing, if its dance, dance, if its fashion, fashion. SHINee is showing great talents in these areas. Comparing the time when i was disgusted with the blushing idol group performances they have captivated me. This is also the power that made the noonas open their wallets.

SHINee who made a strong connection with the noonas seemed embarassed about this. "We don't just have noona fans. When we do fansigns, we had many chances to meet the fans and as we attend more of those events the fanbase gets wider. (Jonghyun)" "The youngest Taemin was 16 when he debuted so he had gained a lot of noona fans. When they are the same age as me or younger, they can be noonas to Taemin. (Onew)" They who sang Noona is so Pretty seemed anxious about noonas. When they were recorded Key wondered how he can express the feelings of love for a noona.
