Nicaragua Trip ~ Part 3

We all had a good laugh when this horse and wagon pulled up to the gas pump.  We were curious where they were going to put the gas but then realized there was a small tank on the trailer.  Waiting at an intersection for a cattle crossing. We drove about 1 hour from Leon to visit Lake Managua and Momotombo, the volcano in the background.  The volcano lets off steam continuously and actually has a geothermal plant within the volcano that captures energy to be used for electricity. Ready to head out on a boat ride to the base of the volcano. Saturday evening we had dinner with the clinic board of directors at a restaurant near our hotel in León. Sunday morning we had breakfast with Marwel and Einer and then toured some of the old architecture in León.  The yellow church below is called The Church of the Recollection, construction was completed in 1788. The oldest operating Catholic school in Nicaragua. We took a walking tour of the  León  Cathedral, completed ...

Nicaragua Trip ~ Part 2

Day 3 (Saturday) in Nicaragua... The hotel we stayed at in Leon was called Hotel Libano.   It wasn't quite as 'Americanized' as our first hotel.  Let's just say we took cold showers every day. ;). However, it made up for it with it's own little local charm.     Dan is a coffee expert (he works for Coffea in Sioux Falls and helps source coffee beans).  So Jon and Dan were happy to find this little French Bakery and Cafe next door to our hotel with some pretty good coffee!  The street our hotel was on. We headed back to the clinic where we were served breakfast. Another way Marwel gets new patients is by going out to different churches in the area and inviting a group to come in about 10 people at a time for check-ups.  On this particular morning, a group came in ranging from little children to elderly.  First, Marwel leads them in devotions and singing before starting the clinic.  Marwel getting medications from his pharmacy. Praying...

Jon and Erin's trip to Nicaragua ~ Day 1 and Day 2

Jon and Erin left for their trip to Nicaragua with the Luke Society on Thursday,  April 25.  We left Rock Valley at 4:00 am to get to the airport for a 6:45 am flight.  We spent most of our day in airports and airplanes.  Flying through Dallas, then Miami, and finally to Managua, Nicaragua.  We were thankful all our flights were on time and our travel day went as smoothly as possible.  Flying over the ocean. Sun setting during our last flight of the day. As we flew over Honduras/Nicaragua we could see lava from volcanoes below. We finally arrived in Managua at 7:30 pm.  Our hotel was right across the street from the airport, so we had a quick drive over.  We stayed at the Best Western Las Mercedes the first night before traveling to León the next morning.     Since it was dark when we arrived, we didn't get to see much of the hotel.  We had a quick supper at the hotel restaurant before heading to bed.  It was fun to explor...
