From Trash to Treasure

We're still celebrating Earth Day 2023 by making holiday cards that feature a recycled, reused or upcycled element

and you're still invited to join the fun, which we hope you will. Here's what we made this week:

Stephanie's Other Card

Stephanie says, "I built my card around recycled packaging from Tim Holtz for my card base ... the snowy edges seemed like the perfect home for my vintage Santa ephemera.  I layered on a vintage calendar and a punch of poinsettia paper for a bit more red on the corner.  The layout is a Sketch from Just Add Ink with a stamped sentiment from Taylored Expressions Pennant Parade Christmas and a rub-on sentiment along the bottom to finish the design."

Lauren says, "My recycled ingredients for this week include some poinsettia giftwrap that I backed with cardstock; part of a box from a cool tea-themed advent calendar my neighbor Deb gave me; and the cover of a random holiday catalog I saved. I glued the catalog cover to some cardstock, then fussycut the handsome nutcracker. I used the tea box and the giftwrap just like regular patterned paper, adding gold mats to make them stand out more. I found a glittery sentiment flag in a pack of cardstock ephemera pieces (from Carta Bella a couple of years ago, I think) and added it on little slivers of foam tape et voila... my design is complete!"

Oh Tinsel Tree, Oh Tinsel Tree

We're still creating cards inspired by the DIY Tinsel Tree Tutorial at White House Crafts.

Here's how we were inspired this week:

Lauren says, "This week I took inspiration from the color palette (though I've inverted the proportions); from the circle shapes of the baubles, and the different shiny/matte/sparkly surfaces. I've used a fabulous Simon Says Stamp Ring Wreath Die that Stephanie gave me and inset the circles with pink, blue, silver and gold specialty papers ; then I added a large script sentiment and finished off with several colors and sizes of Eyelet Outlet Pearl Brads."

Stephanie says, "I wanted to recreate the feel of the tinsel with paper.  I used fringe scissors from my stash (that I've had forever, and I'm not sure that I've ever actually used them) on silver glitter paper.  I attached the *tinsel* to a Gel Press print from my stash that includes the colors from the tree, including an ethereal silver layer on top.  I added a wrap of one of my favorite ribbons to pull in the pink.  I matted it on a matte gold card base to pull in that color from the image.  I finished with a negative Savvy Stamps sentiment in that same glorious pink."

Tinsel Tree Inspired

This fortnight we've got a Photo Inspiration prompt for you... to make a card inspired by this DIY Tinsel Tree Tutorial at White House Crafts. You can choose any part of the photo that appeals to you: You might choose the trees themselves, the colors, the decorations, or some tinsel ... just make sure you include in your post how the photo inspired your design.

Here's how we were inspired by the design:

Stephanie says, "I started by embossing a Bottle Brush Tree three times with silver embossing powder (using my MISTI to keep them aligned) from Flora & Fauna Bottle Brush Snowglobe Set inspired by both types of trees in the photo.  I die cut the panel using Dare 2B Artzy Double Dot Rectangle Framelits.  Next I found some stars & gems in the colors from the picture & decorated my trees.  I finished with a tiny sentiment from the same set & then framed with one of my GelliArts prints before attaching to a bright pink card base."

Lauren says, "I'm not sure I've ever made such a literal photo inspiration card, but I basically loved everything in the picture! I used Spellbinders' Bottle Brush Tree Die Set to create the tiny trees and My Favorite Things' Happy Holidays Circle Frame to make a home for them. The background plaid is a Simple Stories *Easter* paper, as a matter of fact; the pink is from Lawn Fawn's Knit Picky line. I've added pink glitter pearl accents and scattered some golden Eyelet Outlet Star Sequins about for extra shine. I was so happy with how this came out that I made it into Paper Anthology's March Holiday Jumpstart Card Kit, for which that fun die set is included; you can read more about it on my personal blog."
