Jump for Joy Stencil Test Drive

Hola from Guatemala, where I am here doing a week of service in a community I love dearly!

It's time for another Stencil Test Drive, this time featuring the Jump for Joy Stencil from Stencil Girl, and the creativity of:

I have 3 projects, two videos and a giveaway to share with you!

This stencil was inspired by my daughter Samy -- a joyous exuberant being.

I have been playing a lot with this versatile stencil.  I love the images of the girls, as well as the exclamation points (which make a great border), and the words.  I used all of the elements of the stencil to make this page for Samy, to commemorate the end of 6th Grade:

The images on this stencil are so girl-positive.  I made two canvases, using two of the three figures:

 and:

I covered both canvases with vintage sheet music and old encyclopedia pages.   I used a gelli plate tape transfer technique to make this girl:

I heat embossed two hearts to use as embellishments.  Remember them from this post

You might also recognize the Dots and Dashes stencil, and one of the windows from the Windows & Doors stencil,

and even some leaves from my Cascading Leaves stencil!  Stencils are definitely my go-to supply for creating texture and interest.

Remember that your stencils can be used in their entirety, or you can use elements of them.  You are the boss of your stencils!

Here's a short video of me working on "Shine Your Light."

and a short video of me working on "Rejoice."

I can't wait to see what Carolyn Dube, Maria McGuire, and Michelle LaPoint Rydell did!

GIVEAWAY!  Comment by Sunday night and be eligible to win the Jump for Joy stencilJust leave your email address in your comment so I know you're interested, and how to get in touch with you.  (If you follow my blog, let me know for an extra chance to win!)

Stencil Test Drive with the Dots & Dashes Stencil

It's time for another Stencil Test Drive!  This time, we'll be driving the Dots & Dashes stencil from Stencil Girl Products featuring the amazing art of:

I created so many things using this stencil and have two videos to show you!

I used my gelli plate and stencil to build up lots of layers by repeatedly rolling out paint and changing the registration of my paper slightly to get the imprint of the stencil in different places...

(Did you know that I'll be teaching a gelli plate workshop at Little Bird Creations in NY?  Friday, September 20th -- it's a gelli plate party culminating in making your own journal!  Hope you can come!)

I also used a pouncing technique with a cosmetic sponge to create a rainbow colored page.

I cut the rainbow colored page into very narrow strips, mixed them up, and glued them down on a piece of cardstock...

Which I then cut up to make lots of shapes, flowers, hearts, and leaves to use in other projects...

and to form the background for ATC's and MOO cards, which I will share when they're done!

I also used several papers created with this stencil on my gelli plate to make squares and circles of different sizes, which I sewed together...

I painted a square 12 x 12" canvas with black gesso...

and stenciled it with metallic paint using the Dots & Dashes stencil...

I adhered the squares to the canvas using Tacky Glue...

and then made a paste of glass bead gel and mica powder.  (You can see a demo of this technique in this post.)  I dragged it through a portion of the stencil using a palette knife to create a border.  I isolated a pomegranate from the Apples & Pomegranate stencil to echo the circles in the squares.

I hope this post has given you lots of ideas for using the Dots & Dashes stencil!  And I know the creations of:
will give you even more inspiration!
Giveaway!  Comment on this post by Sunday evening, and be eligible to win a Dots & Dashes stencil of your own!  Let me know you follow my blog for an extra chance to win!
UPDATE:  The winner is Kelly!   She found me through Seth Apter's blog, and I'm so glad she did!

And did you know that The Summer of Color is open at Twinkle, Twinkle?  Kristin has a very cool twist on the challenge this time around...check it out!

Thank you for visiting! I read and treasure every comment and will answer any questions as quickly as I can.

Stencil Test Drive: Apples & Pomegranates & Giveaway!

It's time for another Stencil Test Drive, featuring the Apples & Pomegranates stencil from Stencil Girl Products,
and the artistry of

Carolyn Dube
Maria McGuire and
Revlie Schuit

I'm so excited to see what they did with this stencil!
Apples and pomegranates are very biblical fruits; I have used these motifs in many of my Judaica designs for Aviv Judaica.

My daughter Mariel graduated this weekend from William & Mary, and will be spending time in Israel this summer on Birthright.  So it seemed fitting to use this stencil to create a journal for her for this exciting trip!

I started with a collection of papers I had previously made with my gelli plate.  They were just waiting for the perfect journal idea...

One thing I love about this stencil is that you can isolate the top and bottom rows of fruits to create a border:

or isolate one of the branches to create a border:

I had fun using parts, and then all of the stencil, to create different looks for this journal.  Here are the front and back:

and some of the inside pages:

Here's a fast forward video of some of my process.  I'm sorry about the number of times my left hand is in the way -- I'm working on finding a different camera set up!

I hope this inspires you to do some stenciling! Please visit:

to see what they did with the Apples & Pomegranate stencil!

Linking to Paint Party Friday (so sorry not to get around last week -- I was at Mariel's graduation), and Art Journal Everyday, as well as to the challenge at Fashionable Stamping (Anything Goes)!

And now for a giveaway!   If you'd like a pamphlet stitch journal designed by me, please let me know in your comment before Sunday night, and one random winner will get one!

And finally, I just have to share a picture from Mariel's graduation.  I'm so proud of her!

(that's my mom on the left, my dad in the middle, Mariel, Samy, me and Freddie.)

Thank you for visiting! I read and treasure every comment and will answer any questions as quickly as I can.
