Happy Birthday Jenni from Dina

The fabulous Dina Wakley made a birthday tag to celebrate Jenni's birthday. In true style she's combined colourful painty drips with freehand cut shapes. Stunning as always Dina!

Hope you're enjoying your birthday Jenni :-)

Art Journaling in Vintage Ledger by Dina Wakley

Here is another amazing art journal page by Dina Wakley.  This series is done on vintage ledger which makes for amazing detail in the background of Dina's Work.  The vintage bits are from the February Antiquarian Add-on and the clock face is a digital cut file from Lisa Dickinson.

If you'd like to see more inspiration from Dina and some insider tips on how she creates her vibrant, emotion-infused work, her book, "Art Journal Freedom," is now available.  Check out May Flaum's Blog for an excellent review of it.

As usual, thanks for the inspiration Dina!

JBS Summer Games: Rythmic Gymnastics

Today we have inspiration from Dina Wakley who writes, "I was inspired by Olympic Rhythmic Gymnastics. I am always amazed how the athletes combine gymnastics and dance with the hoop and the long, long ribbon. When I was a girl, I would imagine having one of those long ribbons of my very own! I noticed that the paper in the Project kit this month had circles on it...like the hoops! I used the ribbon in the kit to represent the ribbon in the routines. You really can find inspiration anywhere you look."

There is still plenty of time to enter the JBS Summer Games Challenge! We'd love to be inspired by YOU and hope you'll join us!

Stencil and Reverse Stencil with Dina Wakley

Here is another take on the Diecut Alphabet Sheet.  This time design team member Dina Wakley has chosen to use it as a stencil and misted it onto the Perforated Bank Statement with Lemon Drops.  She then painted the background with Weather Vane before adding her journaling, photo, title, and a scattering of stamped medallions and punched birds.

Notice how she's customized the Vintage/Black Shadow Alpha Stickers with aqua paint to suit her design needs.
Dina then used the same stencil that she misted in the first layout as the foundation for her second layout.  What a great idea to have it pull double duty!

She polished off this one with some misted Chipboard Tabs, Vintage Printed Tags, and a few bits from the Perforated Stamps Sheet with her title stamped with our Clear Alphabet Set.

thanks for the inspiration Dina!

Learning from Dina Wakley

Earlier this week fellow JBS designer Dina Wakley and I were guests on a new episode of the Paperclipping Roundtable, a scrapbooking podcast.  You can just click below to listen to us discuss our process for creating a single layout from start to finish, and find this episode here on the Paperclipping website if you want to join in the comments.

Listening to Dina talk about her process made me immediately want to give some of her creative steps a try - and I wanted to try a page that mixed Dina's free-flow, artsy style with my own look, so things like stacked papers, butterflies and letter stickers.  I started with the die-cut letter stencil, after I had used it to paint letters onto a few other sheets of cardstock, so it was already soaked in pink and purple ink.  I layered that and the music print from Haven on the large dot embossed cardstock in Jenni's collection for Co'ordinations, and I was off to a start of embracing my messier side!

To try a few other things I might not do, I grabbed my favourite JBS stamp (the butterfly, of course!) and 'inked' it with a colour wash spray instead of an ink pad, and stamped it on one of the mini-pattern blocks from Red/Black Extension IV.  I love how it stamped clear enough that you can see the butterfly design, but fluid enough that it looks more like paint than a stamp.  Then I cleaned and reinked the stamp with Jenni's lavender ink pad and stamped just offset from the first design... then soaked the whole block with pearl glimmer mist for good measure!  I love the mix of shades and the shine.

This photo itself deserves a little explanation, I suppose.  It turns out I was a scrapbooker long before I knew the word scrapbooking existed.  Growing up, I was a 4-H Member (4-H! For Youth! For America! 4-H! ...I know some of you were singing that already.) and we had to keep an official 4-H record book that we turned in for assessment every year.  In it, we had to record - in our own words - what we did on any number of special projects we had highlighted as our interests.  My family have been helping me search for some childhood photos and came up with this book that includes page after page of things I wrote growing up about all my hobbies and interests, and the writing is just as funny as the pictures.  I was so overly serious as a child!  Plus although my vocabulary has matured a bit over the years, there are sentence structures I used as a tiny girl that I still use now... clearly I am a creature of habit!  So I decided to include the whole page and printed the scanned image as a 4x6 picture, which is clear enough to read easily in my album.

Behind the photo, I layered scraps of JBS papers new and old (and one extra scrap from some other project left-overs since it was a good match to the purple) and tucked in a label from the Magpie accessory sheet and some hodge podge stickers (love them!) and sprayed some pale pink mist over that whole stack of things to make it coordinate better with the alpha stencil.

To finish things, I embossed the JBS chipboard hearts with a metallic pink embossing powder - it looks either pink or purple, depending on how you look at it, so that pulled the pink and purple colours together even more.  I wanted a bit of contrast behind the hearts so added a few scraps of pink washi tape, then spelled out my title with JBS letters new and old - the tiny letters are from the bottom of the hodge podge sticker sheet!

Dina... I hope you approve of my style mash-up!

By the way, all this weekend I'm hosting an online crop on my blog - and there you can see what happened to the other piece of paper from that alphabet stencil, amongst plenty of other things! And win prizes, including JBS goodies!  I'd love for you to stop by for some scrapping fun.

Have a brilliantly crafty weekend!

Love and glitter,
Shimelle

Colorful Collage With Dina Wakley

This morning we have some amazing collage work from Dina Wakley to share!  These first two tags have the sweet Boy and Girl Silhouette Stamps (all our exclusive stamps from 2011 are now available a la carte at mercantile!) on our Peforated Stamps Paper.
She also used Lemon Drops Re-inker on the Alphabet Diecut Paper and Speckled Egg and Lavendar Sachet on the tags.  (all our Ranger colors can be found HERE).
Here is a journal page with more Lemon Drops on the background and the punched Bird in Flight and Speckled Egg on the Alphabet Diecut paper.
The title is stamped with the Clear Alphabet Stamps onto our Perforated Stamp Paper.
With this journal page, dina used the Diecut Alphabet Paper as a stencil and inked it with Weather Vane Re-inker.  You can also see more Speckled Egg in the background as well as some Cough Syrup on the Bank Receipt Paper and Lemon Drops on the Birds in Flight.
Here are the adorable little girl and boy stamps again as well as one of the Days of the Week Stamps on a bit of product packaging.
And one more page from Dina's Journal!  This one has the Whimsy Silhouette Stamp and Days of the Week Stamp in Fountain Pen.  There is more Speckled Egg, Cough Syrup, Weather Vane, and Lemon Drops here as well as the addiction of a bit of Seed Packet.
Thanks so much for all the inspiration Dina!

Check back this evening for our April Guest and gallery updates!  If you love the artistic collaged look it's a banner day for you!

Days of the Week With Dina Wakley

Today we have some fabulous stamping techniques from Dina Wakley.  First she's created a clever background by stamping the Days of the Week Stamp Set in Fountain Pen and then Weather Vane for a faded repeat.  Over that she's made a fun string of pennants with the Bunting Stamp Set and some creative misting done Dina style.  Then finally she's added a "cute" title with our Alphabet Stamp Set and a little coloring in.  Thanks for the stamping inspiration Dina!

Christmas Garland #4 by Dina Wakley

I made this with a combination of JBS Christmas goodies, as well as vintage items that came in November's Antiquarian Kit (if you're not getting the add-ons, you're missing out! Such fun stuff!). I cut the little cardboard tails (that are under the chipboard button) from the packaging the buttons came in. That red school-paper print is just too fun to throw away.

JBS Products Used:
Christmas Chipboard Buttons
Christmas Place Cards
Christmas 2011 Accessory Sheet

Don't miss out on any of our Christmas Garland pieces!

Thanks for the inspiration Dina!

Balance by Dina Wakley

On this layout I used one of my favorite older JBS products, and one of my favorite new products. The "old" product i used is the JBS Bookprint paper. I adore that paper! It is the perfect background, so versatile. Plus I have an affinity for text papers and words, so the paper is perfect. My favorite "new" product is the Speckled Egg JBS paint...swoon! I used it to color the tag and the cool new dotted chipboard letters. I used the Speckled Egg ink pad on the right side of the layout...I just pressed the pad onto the cardstock to get a rectangular outline in which to journal.

Back to School with Dina Wakley

Today's back to school thought is brought to us by Dina Wakley who writes, "Back to School for me means....a quiet house! When all three of my boys are home, it's fun but LOUD. There's always something going on...laughing, computer games, guitar-playing, IPODs blaring. It's great...but I will say I do really enjoy a quiet house when they leave for school. I recharge and work and get ready for the craziness to begin when they get home."

Heating Up May #1

This week we continue "Putting Our Stamp on May" by "Heating Up May" with a little heat embossing action. Today's post is from Dina Wakley who writes, "I love Jenni's stamping inks (made by the awesome Ranger company). They're juicy and vibrant. When I first got them, I wondered if you could emboss with them. I know, I know, they're dye-based inks. But Rangers makes various dye inks that stay open (i.e. wet) long enough to emboss with.

So, I tried it. I took the JBS Ribbon Stamp and stamped it with Chili Powder and Seed Packet inks onto kraft cardstock. I ran my finger over the ink & thought, "It feels dry...it probably won't work." Then I dumped on some clear embossing powder and shook off the excess. And guess what...the powder stuck to the ink perfectly! I applied heat with my heat tool and voila...I had embossed successfully with Jenni's dye-based inks.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but I embossed all the ribbons in the layout by using Jenni's inks and clear powder. I cut them out and they made a fun & easy embellishment for the page. Try it!"

P.S. We'll be continuing another Four Post Monday this afternoon with our NSD Challenge Winners and a brand new challenge!

Dina Wakley Loves to Travel!

Today we have a great travel themed layout from our resident Ranger expert, Dina Wakley. Dina says, "For our special focus on Jenni's awesome Ranger products, I put a good squirt of Lemon Drops Re-inker into a Mini Mister, and then filled it up the rest of the way with water. I used my custom spray ink and a stencil to create the sunburst motif on the cardstock. The motif was very bold, so I didn't need to add too many other embellishments (I always say that ink is the ultimate embellishment!). Some JBS letters, bingo cards, and little blue star stickers complete my layout, which is a tribute to how much I love to travel."

Thanks for the inspiration Dina!
