Learning to crochet - a little progress!

This year I've decided to learn to crochet - and also to teach my daughters along the way!
We're still at the very beginning - practising lots of chains!

I've now also learned slip stitch and double crochet - and am just playing around with them for now..

My attempts are slowly starting to look a little neater...

I'm excited to see I'm learning - and my youngest daughter has really taken to it and is practising lots playing around with this too!

Are you learning a new skill this year?  How are you going with it?

Cotton

This year one of my goals was to learn more about sewing.  Since I have a very large fabric stash, I thought perhaps it would be a good idea to learn a little more about the fabric!
So today I thought I'd start with cotton. The most popular and best selling fabric in the world.

History tells us that cotton has been cultivated and used to make clothing for thousands of years in places like Egypt, Mexico and South Asia.

Nowadays some of the largest cotton exporters are in the USA, India, Brazil, Uzbekistan and Australia. It is also grown in many other countries too.

Cotton is not just used for making fabric. It is also used in fishnets, coffee filters, tents and book binding.
Also - most bank notes in the world today are made using some cotton!

  • Cotton is absorbent and also lets heat pass through it easily, making it a comfortable fabric to use for warm weather clothing.

  • It is also quite a strong and durable fabric. It is also stronger when wet - so making it an ideal fabric for things like baby wipes!

  • Cotton is also easy to clean- particularly since it can withstand high temperatures. It can be boiled and so sterilized making it a suitable fabric for hospital bedding for example!

  • Cotton fabric does shrink, so it's definitely a good idea to pre-wash it before you make anything with it! Particularly clothing!

  • Cotton can be both knit and woven into cloth.

I hope you enjoyed learning a little more about cotton! I was most surprised to learn it's used in banknotes! I even found an interesting video showing how bank note paper is made using cotton!

Top Ten Time Management Tips

Over the last couple of weeks I feel like I've been sliding away from organisation to chaos.  There are so many different things I want to be doing with my time - but I don't feel like I'm getting any one of them done satisfactorily.

So I thought it would be good for me to take a step back and look at how I should be managing my time better to achieve more and be more satisfied at the my day. I know what I should be doing - but just need reminding of it sometimes!

1. Write a list
Having tasks on paper helps you to remember them and you can also see them being checked off as you work through them.

2. Prioritize
Make sure the important tasks get done first - not just the easy and fun ones!

3. Just do it!
Deal with things like emails straight away - don't just add them to the 'to do' pile. Don't procrastinate!

4. Have fixed task times
Work expands to fill the available time.  Decide how long you have for each task and stick to it.  Be sensible with this and flexible enough to cope with finishing some tasks a little under schedule and some a little over.

5. No background distractions!
Make set times to check email, facebook, twitter, pinterest - don't just have them running in the background constantly which would mean you get distracted by every new comment and story!

6. Stop!
Take breaks, have a snack, go outside, have a walk.  Even a few minutes can refresh you.

7. Let the phone ring
Sometimes you need to ignore that ringing and concentrate on the task in hand.  I go on the principle that if it's an important call they will leave a message - or call back.  Think of it as if you're driving and can't answer!

8. Keep your workspace tidy
When this is a mess - it's just another  task to add to the to-do list.  Keeping things organised and clear helps you see clearly what needs to be done and so makes it easier to do it!

9. Know the best times of day
Understand what tasks you do better at what times of the day and schedule accordingly.  For example, for me, the light in my sewing room is better in the morning than the afternoon, so I'm far better to sew in the mornings!

10. Accept that there is unfinished business
Some tasks can be totally completed - others, like housework, gardening, answering emails...are never-ending - or unfinished business.  Learn to accept that some of your tasks are daily, ongoing and never completely finished!

Phew!  well - now I just have to follow my own advice and get back on track!

What do you find helps you manage your time ?
Do you use any of the above strategies?
Do you have any more to add?

21 days to form a habit - DONE! and what's next....

Three weeks ago I wrote about being fed up with the mess in my house!  To try to change this I challenged myself to keep the surfaces clear for 21 days.  The theory being that it takes 21 days to form a habit - so if I could continue this for 21 days, then I would become a tidier person as a result!

Well, I DID IT!!

This is the final picture of those 21 days. Each day I took pictures of my surfaces and posted them on Facebook to keep me accountable.  Thanks to all those who encouraged me along the way!

I have always been rather a messy person, so for me, this is a big achievement!

HOWEVER

It has got me thinking about what I can do for the next 21 days - trying to think of something bigger better and more productive.....
There are endless things I would like to do, plenty of things to sew,
lots of things to do around the house, fitness goals...

BUT

Since growing my blog - which is slowly becoming a profitable 'job' for me is one of my major goals this year. I've decided to fit this into a 21 days to form a habit challenge.

There are endless websites out there and great blog posts, courses and information. I've looked at many over the past year and implemented some of the suggested ideas, trying as best I can to adapt and fit them to my 'creative' blog.

My blog has grown as a result, but I want to aim higher, bigger and better! and I also want to grow my second blog - Be Our Best.  For those of you who have followed me for a while - you may have seen I wrote these as my main goals for 2012 . It's now 2 months into the year, and I've made a little progress, but feel I could do more!

SO, here's my next 21 days to form a habit challenge. One that will stretch me and push me and if I can stick to it, should bring great benefits!

Each day for the next 21 days, I will actively DO something to promote the growth of my blogs. Not just read things and say - yes that sounds like a good idea - but take ACTION! I know some days I will find this hard - particularly at the weekends, but if I'm serious about making blogging profitable for myself, then I have to commit to time and effort!  Of course I'd like this to become a habit - because I don't just want my blog to grow for 21 days - but to continue growing long term!

As with my last 21 day challenge, I will post each day what I'm doing on my Facebook page.
So if you're interested, or want to join me in this - then come on over to my Facebook page each day!

I have to say I'm a bit nervous about this challenge !! I've a couple of ideas - but not enough for 21 days!  I'll have to work hard and research lots!  But once I've committed to this - I WILL DO IT!

I'll post about this again here - in 21 days time!

Wish me luck!

21 days to form a habit

What I've learnt this week??? I've learnt that..

I've had enough!

I am and have always been quite a messy person, but finally I've reached a point that I just HAVE to do something about it.

Having a messy house sets a bad example for my girls, and it doesn't help them be able to keep their own things tidy - or make it easy for them to help me cook when the kitchen bench is a mess!  It affects everything I do - a messy house makes for a messy mind and a messy life!

So, I've decided to take action.

I've said before I'm a big fan of Anthony Robbins - and I do agree with his sentiment that you can change your life in an instant just by changing your mindset.  I have tried changing my mindset with regard to tidying, but I think I need a little help.

SO - here's my plan!

It is said that it takes 21 days to form a habit.
So yesterday I tidied all the problem areas in my house, and took before and after photos.
Here they are:

My kitchen bench...

My bedroom table...

Our side buffet...

Our TV Cabinet

Each day for the next 21 days on my facebook page I'm going to post photos of what these four surfaces look like in my house.
I don't want to be posting messy photos again - so the idea is to take boringly tidy photos each day!

Then by the end of 21 days - being tidy in my house will be a habit that I will continue to keep!  I'm going to try to get my girls to join me too - in keeping their bedroom tidy too!

What good habit would you like to form?
Would you like to join me in posting something every day for the next 21 days to try to form that habit?
If you want to give this a try - leave a comment here and I'll make a note to come and check out your progress each day for the next 21! Let's see if we can motivate and support each other to improve !

Just do it!
