A New Leader and Ender Project

When there are lots of things that you should be doing, what do you do instead?

Why, start yet another quilt, of course.  However, this is a bit different to the last few.

I have really missed having a leader and ender project on the go for the last couple of years, so decided to do something about it.  I’ve had a couple of ideas swimming around in my head, but this was going to take the least effort to bring to fruition.

The pattern is “Bonnie Lass” from Jen Kingwell’s book Quilt Lovely.

As you can see, there are lots of the same sized pieces that will be perfect as leaders and enders.

I got out a couple of tubs labeled “Small Scraps”, as well as the left overs from when I made my Trail Mix quilt and made a beautiful mess.

After a couple of hours of playing in my happy place, I had 80 sets of blocks ready to go.  Now, that isn’t even a quarter of what is required, but should keep me out of trouble at Scrub Stitchin’ and for a bit longer. When these get low, I will have another cutting session. There is no rush for this, so I will just have them sitting beside my machine and one day I will have a bonus quilt top.

Meanwhile, they are tucked away in their pretty little tin.  From memory, I used this tin when I started the hexies and they outgrew it rather quickly.

Scrub Stitchin’ - What We Worked On

There is always such a variety of projects under way during the retreat.  For the last few years Chooky has come up with a project that we may like to stitch at the same.  This year it was a braided quilt featuring a zig zag up the centre of the braid.

It required a ruler that is custom made by Picton Patchwork in Coonabarabran and is cleverly made using a jelly roll.  It is a very effective design with minimal wastage.

The designers visited one evening, bringing their version of the quilt to show us.

Most of us bought the ruler, but only a small portion of the group started the project.  I took along suitable fabrics, but ended up too busy working on other things to make a start.

This is how things finished at the end of the retreat.  The way it works is that you make one very long braid and then cut it into segments to make the columns in the quilt.  It looks so different in the various fabric ranges.  I hope some of the completed quilts are brought along next year for us to see.  Hopefully, I’ll have mine done in time.

I couldn’t resist getting a photo of the papparazzi.

Let’s have a wander and see what else was happening.

And me.  Well, as usual, I took far more than I could ever achieve, but there would be nothing worse than running out of projects…..as if.
While I think of it, I took a new item to Scrub Stitchin' this year.  I usually have a mish mash of different bags to take my sewing bits and bobs.  This year I was looking for a better solution.  I bought this vintage Singer sewing box a couple of years ago, full of various sewing items, but have never used it.  It proved to be perfect for all my notions.  It is even now resplendent with a star, thanks Jenny.  I must remember to take it again next year.
My priority was to get the appliqué leaves, stems and berries completed on my Laundry Basket Spring Mystery Quilt.  That took way longer than expected.  Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I was talking and didn’t even stitch a stitch until after morning tea on Thursday.  Let’s face it, this is about more than the sewing, so it doesn’t matter.
Anyway, I did get the appliqué finished, the four quadrants joined and the hexy appliquéd to the centre by Saturday lunch.  Phew! Not the best photo, but you get the idea. Now I have to work out a final border.

What next?  I also brought fourteen fish blocks to appliqué.  Yep, fourteen.  After the last project I was over appliqué, so didn’t even touch them.
I was in the mood for something simple and rather mindless. My two split nine patches for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge fit the bill nicely.
Two years ago, at Scrub Stitchin’, I made a heap of half square triangles as leaders and enders and they have sat in their little baggie ever since.  The plan was to make a baby quilt, but I would need to make a decision about layout.  After having a bit of a look through Pinterest I settled on a sort of off centre spiral pinwheel thing.  It evolved mainly due to the colours that I had.  Nothing, flash, quick and easy and once I quilt it, it will be another little donation quilt. It was finished by early evening on Saturday.
For the rest of Saturday evening and on Sunday I worked on my Number 9 of the Chookshed Stitchers’ Challenge.  This was my Harry Potter quilt.  Happily, I had the top pieced by lunchtime.  Now I just have to quilt and bind it by the end of the month.

It certainly was a very creative hub.

Making Good Progress

Having set myself the goals to complete two quilts this month I made an early start.

Firstly, the Chookshed Stitchers' Challenge is to make the Sparkly Dragonfly Quilt.

I started off with these fabrics.

Before long, they turned into these strips.

The next day they turned into a quilt top.  It will be bound with the pink and white star fabric.  It looks rather washed out in this photo, due to poor light.  The colours in the top photos are much more accurate.  I'm  really happy with it, as it is so very pretty.  Next, I have to find a suitable fabric for the backing in the stash and get it quilted.  Watch this space.

As it turns out, there is still enough fabric left to make another small scrappy quilt.  I’ll have to work out how to make something pretty using the remaining fabric in the most efficient way.

Then it was on to the Just Two Charm Packs Quilt along, my One Monthly Goal.

After laying out the blocks to achieve a pleasing look, without overthinking it, I added the sashings and border.  Once again, other than the gifted half layer cake, everything is from stash.  Like the first quilt, the next step is to find a suitable fabric to use for the backing.  This will not be as easy, but I'm sure I will be able to find something that will work.

While I was stitching the two quilts I also pieced the red split nine patch Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks for this month as a leader and ender, which was a bonus.

Now to get on with the next steps.

A Bit More Stitching

I have done a bit more stitching last week.
Firstly, I finished the beanie for Mick.  It only took a few days.  Best of all, he wore it on Saturday night and confirmed it a success.  Yay!
Next, I finished off the little cross stitch bookmark.  It didn’t take long to complete the project, after sitting as a kit in my cupboard since our visit to New Zealand back in 2015.
On Wednesday the second instalment of the Laundry Basket Mystery Quilt was revealed and the blocks have been completed.  There are four of each colour, so twelve blocks made this week.  Now I have to wait till Wednesday for the next reveal.
Finally, I have made my Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks for the month.  I used these as leader and enders while stitching my mystery quilt blocks, before then getting stuck in and finishing them off.
When I was doing the final pressing of my split nine patches I discovered a little oops.  Oh well, not too difficult to remedy.
Not exactly baby blue, but good enough for me. Pop over to So Scrappy to see what everyone else is up to.

Now to fish out my little butterfly quilt and start working that to achieve my one monthly goal.  Also, I’ll need to find a new knitting or crochet project.

As you can probably guess, I did manage my 15 minutes of stitching each day.

15 minutes day/week = 7/7
15 minutes day/June = 11/11
15 minutes day/2023 = 150/161
Success rate = 93.17%

I’m linking up with Kate over at Life in Pieces.  Pop over to see how the others are faring.  I’m more than happy with my stats.

My January Goals

Having set out my big picture goals for 2023, it is time to get down to the nitty gritty of my goals for January.

Firstly, to my stitching goals.

ONE MONTHLY GOAL
Happily, Patty from Elm Street Quilts is hosting OMG once again.  I really enjoy this link up, as it keeps me motivated and accountable.  Accountability is a great motivator for me.
After a bit of thinking, I've decided that my goal will be to add the sashings to my Swoon Quilt.  Not a large goal, but I have a bit on this month, so it should be achievable.

RAINBOW SCRAP CHALLENGE
Angela from So Scrappy is also continuing to host RSC.  Isn't the logo fun this year. I have a couple of projects that are at the block stage, but will not be playing with them yet.
The colour this month is dark and bright blue.  I made some HST last year and now need to turn them into blocks for a quilt.  I have four of these four patches to stitch.
I want to make one, if not two other projects.  I think I have decided on what blocks to make, but it isn't set in stone as yet.  I have pulled these fabrics from my scrap tub.  Many of my scraps are more like crumbs, so I hope to be able to use some smaller pieces in one of the blocks.  I will have to pull some other fabrics as well.  Watch this space.

UFO/WIP

I think that Swoon fits the bill.

DONATION PROJECT
I have picked one of my cut out cot quilts to stitch up.  It should be fairly simple.

LEADER AND ENDER
As a result of piecing Swoon I have loads of bonus HST.  They will be used in a Leader and Ender project.  I have started pressing some open, but still have to trim them before stitching.  It will be a quilt using all Bonnie and Camille fabrics.

KNITTING OR CROCHET
I've made a little start on my second sock.  It should well and truly be finished this month.

ONE FINISH A MONTH

My socks should fit this bill.  Maybe more, who knows.

USE MONIQUE

Fingers crossed, I will quilt the donation cot quilt.  This will be my first quilt.

HAND STITCHING
Hopefully, I will make a little progress on my kitten cross stitch.

15 MINUTES A DAY

I'm enjoying this challenge and intend to continue.
I have just discovered that Kate from Life in Stitches actually has a weekly link party.  I think I will try to play along.  Once again.........accountability.
Now for the non-stitching goals.

1.    Read a book

2.    Try a new recipe

3.    Have a fun day out - nothing planned yet, but something will crop up.

4.    Have a motorcycle ride - now the weather is hot, not likely to happen, but you never know.

5.    Use the caravan - not going to happen.

6.     Walk - this is a new goal and something I need to do.  I have made a start.  Now to keep it up.

As I say each time, that little lot should keep me amused.
