WHAT DID I LEARN FROM THE 30 DAYS BLOGGING CHALLENGE?

Today I am celebrating...

I have completed the 30 Day Blogging Challenge!

WHOOP WHOOP!!!

30 days ago I asked myself 'Blogging - What's the point?' and then explained 'Why I am doing the 30 Day Blogging Challenge'. Along the way I shared the '30 Day Blogging Challenge - What have I learnt so far'?

But now it's over, so what DID I learn?

1. That I CAN commit to a short intense challenge and see it through to the end. And that despite this, and having so many other commitments during this time, I was able to carry on regardless.

The downside:
  • There were times I wanted to despair, because I have had so many technological problems a long the way.
  • Other things got left. Like housework, but often more important things.
  • I spent far more time than was needed on this challenge because I wanted to make the most of this opportunity. This was nothing to do with the challenge itself, it's more a case of me being  enthusiastic and doing more than is expected or needed. This means I can sometimes fail to reach the goal I set myself because it takes me longer to get there! This is something I continue to work on...
2. That I have a lot to write about and rather than run out of ideas these just grew even more. I am reasurred that rather than use up my creativity by writing a blog post every day ideas get replenished and I have more than I need.

The downside:
  • My draft box has lots of half started posts and this left me feeling overwhelmed. One idea led to so many others, and as I write here I am tempted to say more, but no, I will come back to this another day as it is a post in itself. See what I mean?!

3. That I have a lot more to learn!  A daily email arrives at 6am every day from Sarah Arrow and with her husband Kevin you are provided with ideas and suggestions on how to become a more effective and efficient blogger. There are links to other blogs where you can learn more and be inspired, as well as a supportive FaceBook group where you are invited to share your post every day.
Some of these tips I already knew in theory, which was confidence building:

The downside:
  • There is never a good time to take on a challenge that is demanding. I'm sure YOU can relate to that. This meant I might be inspired to put theory into action or carry out a task but did not have time at the present. Besides which, if it is a lot of new learning, I like to gather information and then digest it, to let it germinate or go back to later when ideas have assimilated. Is this a downside I wonder? I don't think so.
4.  Another reason for not acting on all my learning is that I have made a decision to change to WordPress.  I have thought of this over time but this challenge confirmed it will be right for me. Rather than spend time making change to my current blog it makes sense to do it when I change over.

The downside:
  • This means even more learning! It feels daunting and I will need to put on my big girl knickers, but I feel more prepared and confident now.
5. As well as making improvements to the blog design and content, the 30 Day Blogging Challenge also provides lots of opportunity to improve how you post and reach the people you would like to connect with. I am guilty of not always putting this into action! Because I want time to think about how I do this best. Not because I want it to be perfect - no! One reason I set myself this challenge was to practice imperfection. Let's face it, to post 30 days consecutively takes some doing and there have been many, many times when I have had to remind myself that there are no gold stars for a perfectly constructed sentence however many times I cut and paste, rephrase or revisit to edit my post.  In fact Sarah says in her introduction:

"Perfection is an ideal not a must have. If you are caught in the trap of perfection you’ll not enjoy this blogging challenge".

This was reassuring.  Sarah also tells a classic story of how one of her most successful posts was full of errors. I need to keep reminding myself of this!!

I learnt a lot from this course but it also increased my confidence, showing that some ideas were already being used. Like making lists, or having a plan for posts. But it also confirmed that some days it is good to go with a gut instinct and write from the heart.

6. One reason I set out on this challenge was to visit other blogs more. I had gotten out the habit as Facebook had become more of a focus. I have done this, and it is lovely to reconnect and also to meet new people. My blog has received new followers and lots more comments. In fact I have been really grateful and touched by some of the comments, for some people have spent a lot of time and thought in responding to my posts and this has been revealing, I can learn from this.

The downside:
  • I can't think of one! Unless you count the time that I plan to spend reviewing these comments in more depth so that I can learn even more.
Here are some examples:

"I have enjoyed the variety of posts that you have done. Some very serious some more chatty".

"..and I think most of us like reading an authentic voice who sometimes posts long and sometimes posts short. So that's a win, win. And yes, I like to find out about the person behind the craft too. It's interesting: I'll google to find out how to do something and yet blogs which are all tutorials aren't the ones I add to my Reader".

"I'm with you on the type of blogs you like. Personally the very 'professional and sponsored by all and sundry' lifestyle type blogs do not appeal to me, it is the lack of connection to the real person. I might as well be reading a high street store blog.
Thanks for sharing your story AND for the links"

7. From doing this challenge I have become more clear and confident about my 'niche' and while I want to develop my skills as a blogger I like my current style.

But interestingly, while I started my blog to share and connect with other artists and creative people, I observed that these
posts do not get as many comments as posts where I share other thoughts or ideas, even though we share a common interest.

And some bloggers have said the same about what posts generate most comments that they receive.

This is something to ponder...

My posts about travel received comments that I have inspired others to visit places.  Talking of murals I had posted about:

'Even though they are in my neighbourhood I've never looked at them all together like that - a fine case of familiarity meaning I hardly see them - I must go an have another look with fresh eyes'

In the same way, I have also been inspired by others.  I heard about The Kelpie sculptures from a blog posted by a friend.

I also learnt that it is never too late to post something, even when you think the time has past. And there are always reasons to be grateful.

'Thank you for your thanks - there's no time limit on gratitude'!

I learnt that posts can prompt others to share or remember, and sometimes you learn that a small gesture has a bigger meaning than you realised:

'A delivery like this can really lift a day, or more. I still think often of the day your envelope arrived and how much it meant to me'

8. When I last looked at what I had learnt so far, I wrote:

'That sometimes there is a focus on developing
a blog to promote a business or product. That's great.
But it is not what I want to do'.

Well, I got that wrong!! I realise now that Sarah uses this term to include the people you want to reach out to and it is not about marketing and selling products. Though obviously this would be the perfect challenge to improve your blog if you did!

The downside:
Not having enough time to think about how ideas related to me personally, because I was driven to write my blog post so I could keep up with the 30 day challenge. Perhaps this is not the right way to do it. But I knew if I carried out the idea in each email I might
never get any further. Some people do take longer or have breaks, and Sarah is quick to say there is no right or wrong way to do this. We all have to do what is right for us, even if that becomes another learning experience.

So, what now?

First a big thank you to Sarah and Kevin, who are very generous in their teaching.  I have thoroughly enjoyed this challenge and am pleased to learn that I will continue to receive emails and be part of the group.  Because this is the start, not the end for me. I now want to take a breather and give myself time to go through what I learnt at my own pace. This will allow me to make a plan of action and develop the skills I need to improve my blog and set up WordPress. But first I need to sort out my computer problems, because there is no need to make life even more difficult.

I also want to thank each and every one of you who has been with me on this journey, visiting my blog and leaving comments that have meant so much. It's been an interesting time and I know it has inspired others to sign up and take part. A long the way one of my readers wrote:

'I felt that I didn't have time for the 30 day challenge - but this post has made me think that maybe I should MAKE the time'

So if you want to know more, go check out the free 30 Day Blogging Challenge.

As for me? I'll be signing up and doing it all over again. But first I'm going to  celebrate my achievement and have a few days break from blogging!  Thanks for popping by and I will not be back tomorrow!

30 Day Blogging Challenge - What have I learnt so far?

I'm nearly half way into this challenge.
So what have I learnt so far?

  • That I can write short posts sometimes that are quick to construct.
  • That I can write long posts that lead to long and thoughtful  comments from my readers. These are much appreciated.
  • That sometimes there is a focus on developing a blog to promote a business or product. That's great. But it is not what I want to do. Even so, I can still learn a lot that is relevant and useful to me from this course.
  • That the blogs I most enjoy reading are ones where the person is authentic. I get to know aspects of them as a person. They feel real.
  • That I want to continue blogging in the way that I always have. To share different parts of my life and interests: photography, travel, my creativity, and dreams. Not forgetting difficulties. Because they are part of life too.
  • That I am happy with my style and content. I just want to learn techniques that will make me better and more efficient.
  • That I am enjoying the challenge of blogging every day. I like challenges, right?
  • Photos often provide inspiration for my post, but not all posts have to include a photo. Though I like that most do!
  • That a friend has decided to join me in this 30 Day Blogging Challenge. You might find it useful too, so long as you are not already committed to another challenge that is equally demanding but rewarding. I'm thinking here of those currently writing 300 comments in 30 days, while I cheer on from the side lines! Incidentally, I get nothing for mentioning this blogging course. I do so because I like to share when I find something useful or interesting.
  • That there is a new e-book to go with this course. It is available from Amazon and is a useful read even if you don't want to do the 30 Day Blogging Challenge. Here's a link if you want to find out more.  And here's a link for the course which you can sign up for at any time.

Taking a new or unknown path can be exciting. It may lead to new adventures, or take you no where, but better that than standing still and having the same view point.

Thanks for popping by. See you here again tomorrow!

Me on Monday - and a retreating kind of weekend

Today I am waving at Sian over at 'High in the Sky'. I love her
weekly meme 'Me on Monday' and lots of my blog friends take part. I often think I will join the party but never do. Until now. Because I have a post to write as part of my 30 Day Blogging Challenge and I have had a fun weekend. So why wait any longer?!

Friday was the start of my weekend. It was a get-up at silly-hour kind-of-day so that I could fit more in.  Out of necessity that is, rather than choice, because I had places to go and things to do. I try to be organised and prepared. Really!

I had planned to pack for a weekend away before I went to bed but I was tired and sometime I need to listen to my body and rest.  And as it happens I am more active in the morning, so I set the alarm and then spent the next couple of hours packing my materials and equipment into bags while trying to think what projects I wanted to work on. There was also bags with clothes, bedding, and bits-I-can't-leave-at-home, you know the kind of things, mobile charger, reading book, journal, and wine....

It was also a shower, dress up and wear a necklace kind-of-day.
I had booked to attend a business woman's experience day, so I had workshops to attend, parking space to find, and a smart bag instead of my usual one. It was also tense drive in traffic kind-of-day, thinking I will be late and all the car park spaces taken. Instead, everything flowed. I arrived early, parked and booked in. I got a
bag of goodies (sorry, I tried a spirula cereal bar and decided the chickens may like them more than me!) and then it was successive workshops, each thoroughly worth attending. One of these was presented by Sarah Arrow, who runs the 30 Day Blogging Challenge, and it was lovely to meet her in person. I enjoyed a Reiki session and a workshop about Inner Warrior, and let's face it, it is important to work, rest, and play!!

It was a leave early kind-of-day, because my friend Jill would be on my doorstep when I got home. And she was!  So it was open the front door, load all my bags and boxes into her car, and be off again kind-of-day.

It was excited-chat in the car journey, and finally, a letting-go as we pulled into the car park and unloaded our things into the hall.  It was a hello-lovely-to-see-you again kind-of-day, as we blew up lilos, made up beds, and prepared for our weekend camping in a hall.  We know how to live it up!! And as friends arrived, and paper and glue spread, the busy day slipped into a memory. Despite my early start, who wants to be the first to go to bed? Not me! I was up with the rest til gone midnight. Because that's what weekends are about.

Saturday was another create and chill kind-of-day, with cake o'clock and lovely home cooked meals. With Kerry pulling-it-together, this weekend is easy flowing and as relaxing as any expensive spa. It was a thinking-of-you card making, and lots of book making kind-of-day and with clocks going back we gained an extra hour too. But Sunday comes all to soon and in the afternoon it was a pack up kind-of-day. But for once I left feeling as relaxed as I arrived. A lesson learned kind-of-day. Because usually I am last to finish packing and tables and chairs are being cleared around me. I feel under pressure and each time I try a different tack - start packing earlier in the day, clear up as I go - but nothing made any difference. Until yesterday. I started to pack after lunch and just kept out a few materials that I was using. It worked! Come time to go I was packed within minutes and ready first!  It was a drive home feeling refreshed and content kind-of-day.

Back home it was time to catch up with the family.  My son had stayed over and the men had spent their weekend playing with camper vans and buying a Nexus tablet. It was a cook a curry and chill
kind-of-day to end. And that was just perfect.  Just like my weekend. And that's Me on Monday. Thanks for popping by and I'll be back tomorrow.

MAKING TIME FOR 'ME'!

A few months ago a blog friend told me about 'Meet-Up'.  I'd heard about these but thought they were meant for people new to an area and intended as a way of building a social network. How wrong I was!  When I checked these meetings out I discovered a wealth of local groups covering every subject from archery to zumba. It was a place like minded people could gather. I signed up straight away!

And 3 months ago I couldn't believe my luck, a new group was formed that hugely interested me.  But unfortuantly every meeting has clashed and last night I forego my monthly night with craft friends because I wanted to find out more. So I went to my first NLP Meet-Up.

NLP?

For those who don't know it stands for Neurolinguistic Programming.  I have always been interested in alternative therapies and approaches to life. And how the mind works. I was a child of the 60's after all!  But I am not talking drug induced ways. NO! I have always prefered to use my own resources. Learn ways of making the most of what I have! And so I bought my first book about 15 years ago. I still remember the shelf in the library and the book nudging it's spine towards me.  What could I do but reach out and take a look?!

Since then I have bought 3 more books.

Some years ago I briefly joined a group but it was a distance away and with shift work it wasn't practical to keep going. I thought of going on courses and becoming a practitioner. Because NLP is so 'ME'!  Do you believe in mind over matter?  Well I certainly do. Sometimes it isn't what we have to deal with in life but HOW we deal with it. Take a case in point:

Last night I watched tv presenter Piers Morgan interview Warwick Davis. For those who do not know, Warwick Davis has a height deficiency and starred in a leading role in Star Wars. He has made a success out of his small height, huge personality and determination to live life to the full.  And immidiately my mind has jumped to a similar programme I saw this week. Yes, synchronicity is still flowing! This was a documentary about Brett Nielson who was born with no arms due to his mother taking thalidomide during pregnancy. Brett is another man who against all odds has gone on to live a fulfilling and incredible life. He plays the piano (astoundingly well!), cooks meals and uses his feet instead of his hands. I was blown away!  Nothing gets in the way of these two men, dispite the challenges, other peoples attitudes towards 'difference', and the extra effort involved in everything they do.

“It doesn’t matter what happens to you in your life –
it matters how you deal with it.”

– Brett Nielsen

I mentioned that I thought of doing training and becoming a NLP practitioner. I strongly believe it would have complimented the work I was doing - but I was ahead of my time. My professional body demanded evidence and proof based on research. I couldn't provide this at the time and I didn't have the time or energy to do my own research. And so I put my books back on the shelf.  Until now. I realise there is nothing in my way now. I don't know if I will train to become a practioner, but I will certainly continue to attend the group and learn and use what I can. Personally.  Because it is so true! How we deal with things in life is about attitude and how we think. A few weeks ago I was stressed over mundane tasks that I needed to do. I couldn't see beyond the overwhelm, but with an effort I pulled on my own resources.  And what I didn't have I reached out for. You may have already read that post. If not, you can find it here.

I feel as though I have turned a corner and that the universe is listening.  And in the same way, it is important to listen to our own needs. To take time out, step away, or do what feels right. Because once pysically restored and with new mindset, we too can be powerful and amazing with what we can achieve!  Okay, perhaps that's a bit extreme, but you know what I mean! But positive thinking goes a long way!

I keep talking about synchronicity. It has happened again. Yesterday I read a new blog post on 'Do What You Love'.  It connects so much with what I have been saying over the past week.

Funny that.

Or perhaps not.

Perhaps the universe knows I am ready for change and these are gentle reminders to keep going. And I am.

Thank you for popping by.  I have  so much enjoyed reading your comments and been blown away by how much time and thought has gone into writing these. I'll be back tomorrow with another post as part of my 30 Day Blogging Challenge. Small steps. That's what counts.

HOW TO DO WHAT YOU NEED AND STILL HAVE TIME FOR FUN

In my two previous posts (linked at the bottom) I spoke about how I want to refocus my time so that I can do other things. So yesterday I was more purposeful. Even so, I spent more time than I wanted doing some things, leaving less time for others. So this morning I decided to do things different! And here I will tell you how to do what you need and still have time for fun!

A couple of years ago I found a technique to manage my time more effectively and it worked well. I haven't used it for a while but I decided it would be useful for the changes I am trying to make and if you like making lists this might work for you too.
This is how it works:
  • Set a timer for 2 minutes. Go!
  • Write down everything that you want/need to do.
Now a word of advice here: I'm not talking bucket list, dream holidays (unless you plan to book or pack!) but things that you NEED or you want to do that day. Things like paying bills, meeting a deadline, making appointments or plans, household chores.... the list might not all look fun (though I hope yours is!) but sometimes things need to be done whether we want to or not! And a note of caution. If you are like me you will try and delay or avoid some of these but they don't go away (unless you pay someone else to do the ironing, sort out your accounts, or manage other parts of your life for you that is)!  Of course there may be some ways you can save time, like online shopping and paying bills, but even if you do have someone do your ironing, you may still have to drop your pile off. Write it all down! And remember, you only have 2 minutes! Don't think to much. It's not meant to be neat. Just write! Then:

  • Set the timer for another 2 minutes. Go!
  • Prioritise things on your list. Number them.

What is most important/urgent?  These go first! Optional things go last. Is anything a distraction from things that need doing?  Can you cross this off or put it at the bottom?  Then:
  • Set the timer for another 2 minutes. Go!
  • Allocate time for each of these. It will form a plan for your day. I work in 15 minute blocks but obviously some tasks will need an hour or even more.  Then make any changes as needed.
For example, let's say you have a tooth ache and put off making an appointment because you have a fear of the dentist. But you know you need to go!  How could you get the help you need to arrange this?  Ask a friend to go with you? Seek a dentist who is understanding?
If you need to do something in order to make the appointment add this to your list.
Of course this is just an example. And remember, what we sometimes  find difficult might be easy for someone else. They might be able to give the support we need or help find a solution. So ask for help or advice if you need to, from a friend, family member or someone else who might know. Even a professional if necessary.
Be realistic with time. Giving yourself one hour to check emails and social media might be ample/not enough. But do not over estimate. For me, having allocated time for each task helps me to remain focused. I know if I can work through the necessities there will be time for other things I want to do.
If you are pressed for time, can something be crossed off your list or rescheduled til tomorrow/next week?
Or if you have time to spare can you include something that you would like to do? Something that you enjoy - or perhaps more of something else?  Then once you have allocated time and got a plan:

START!

  • Set your timer for the allocated time. Do not get distracted. Just focus on the task you set yourself.
  • When the time is up move on to the next thing on the list. If this is not possible (let's face it, unexpected difficulties might crop up!)set the timer again but remain focused. If possible, take off something at the bottom of the list and carry it over to next time, depending on how urgent it is. And if you finish before the allocated time have a cup of tea OR move on to the next thing on the list.
Once more synchronicity showed itself yesterday, when I received an email from The Business Bakery. I directed me to a post about 'why it is fabulous to realise that you will never have enough time to do everything'! Go here to read for yourself! Don't you just love when someone acknowledges what you already know?!  And look at No. 9 on the list of ways Julia Bickerstaff said she planned to make change:

'I’m going to stop wasting time scrolling through
Facebook and instead I’m going to do things that matter'.

Yay!!  Someone else who has wasted time on Facebook! Julia writes from a business perspective but making a list of ways you what to make change will work for all of us.  Whether you want more time to spend with family or friends, or blogging, gardening, organising your life, de-cluttering, or doing the things you love, making lists can be helpful and provide focus. So, I hope my technique for prioritizing and allocating time is helpful. It works for me because knowing I have a set amount of time keeps me motivated and focused. But I am not a slave to the plan. If I need to make small adjustments or cross something off the list I don't get stressed or upset. I accept I can only do what I can and providing I have remained focused I feel a sense of achievement. I always include something on my list to look forward to.

And I might start another list following Julia's idea: 20 ways how I am going to change the way I work.  I've made a start. And it's feeling good!

At the start I mentioned my previous two posts. Here's the links if you missed these and want to find out more:

BLOGGING - WHAT'S THE POINT
WHY I AM SETTING MYSELF A 30 DAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE

I've talked about how to do what you need and still have time for fun, and now it is time to press 'publish' because next on my list is getting messy with paper and glue. I have a sample book to make for a workshop, so thanks for popping by and I will be back tomorrow with another post as part of my 30 days Blogging Challenge.

WHY I'M SETTING MYSELF A 30 DAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE!

In my last post I spoke about distractions and how Facebook can take me away from things I want to do. Don't get me wrong!  It also provides a network of groups, friends, and opportunities that I would not want to be without! Spending time on Facebook can be like having my closest friends in the same room, but it's all about balance.  Sometimes I get frustrated with myself because I aimlessly witter time away that I could be spending with friends (real or online), creating, or doing other things that I enjoy. It's like the times I have got on the wrong train or driven past my exit on a motorway and need to retrace my journey to be somewhere I want to be.  A little more thought or planning can prevent these diversions, and so it is for me....

And another diversion is when I have things to do that are difficult or I would rather delay or avoid. I came home from my holiday knowing I had things like insurances, tax, and other mundane but essential things to organise. I'm also trying to develop my creative ideas: to organise more workshops, exhibitions and to get myself out there more. It all takes time and sometimes these things overwhelm and drain me. But I overcome these hurdles, I did what I needed to do, and have turned a corner.  Yay!!

So what did I do?

1.  I put on my big girl knickers and kept going!

Even when I didn't want to.
BUT I was gentle with myself.  I told myself that obstacles are not meant to deflate or stop us - and that once I have done these things I will feel a sense of achievement and relief.
And I do!  Insurances and tax are sorted. I have moved on!

2. I reached out to others.

I recognised that I am not the only one struggling with these things and that advice, support, and experience of others can be helpful  what is needed. A warm understanding smile helps too!

I made appointments to get help with starting a small business as I want to take more steps.

I joined a local woman's business group and attended my first meeting.

This led to an invitation to a one day local seminar - my ticket is booked!

This also led to me discovering the 30 day Blogging Challenge. I couldn't believe how well this fits with my plan to refocus and reconnect!!
Do you believe in synchronicity?  I do!!
In my last post I said I would think about how to do this. I didn't need to, because the idea presented itself, so I have signed up! It will keep me accountable and on track. Let me pause here... I do not plan to get overwhelmed or whip myself into action! No! If I miss a day or something interferes, that's okay. I do not strive for perfection or accolade, I simply want to have focus and enjoy this experience. And coming back to my previous post again and things learned and said, I plan to spend more time visiting blogs and I will be leaving a comment because it is good to give as well as receive.

Which brings me back to 'Why I'm Setting Myself a 30 Day Blog Challenge'.  Bare with me....
I had an email this morning from my blog-friend Sian Fair, (I am linking this particular post as it is relevant to what I am talking about, but do check out her other posts too!!) Anyway, Sian warned me not to go to Pinterest and another friend said that she looses hours there!  Both these  were in response to me saying how much time I waste on Facebook. And I had a light bulb moment because I love Pinterest but I am drawn to Facebook because it provides interaction with others.  I comment and may get a response. It is a two way thing. Pinterest and other social media platforms are less engaging in this respect. And the richest and most engaging connections for me often happen through blogging. Like Facebook, the interaction with others is important. So that's why I am setting myself this challenge. To readdress the balance. 30 days should get be back into a routine that I can continue and I am looking forward to reconnecting with blog friends and making some new. And here is more synchronicity!  Yesterday Julie Cameron wrote about about finding balance between social media and creativity.  The 'inflow' and 'outflow' as she calls it. Everything seems to be pointing to the same direction.

3. And there is more!
I also contacted a local artist-friend because I decided to try and increase my connections.  So this week I went to my first Knit and Natter. It is held in a lovely tea room and I found myself in good company and meeting others who not only knit but blog and love the same things I do.  Why didn't I make more effort to meet before?!!!
But I guess everything has it's time and place and for me that time is now.

But that's not all.  This connection also led on to me being invited to join a local art group. I went to my first meeting last night and what a wonderful group of people I have met! Already there are talks of possible workshops, exhibitions and events that I can be part of. Exciting times ahead!!

It's funny how the universe sometimes gives you what you need and everything pulls together. This time last week I was overwhelmed and frustrated. Sometimes we have to be proactive and trust that all will come right.

Once again I have waffled, said too much more than usual and wonder how many of you have read to the end. If you are still with me thank
you!! And I'd also like to say a big thank you to those who left such long and thought provoking comments on my last post. I was blown away by the response and it gave me to confidence to write again with authenticity and intuition. But don't worry over the next 30 days I will be back to my usual sharing of photos, latest creations, and news. Some of these are already planned but I don't know what things are in store as part of this blogging challenge so watch this space!  I am on an exciting journey!  Which reminds me, my one-word for this year is TRAVEL. How apt!!

I mentioned how the universe sometimes gives you what you need. Well, as part of the 30 day Blogging Challenge I visited two posts written by others who are taking part. I didn't spend time looking - these were both recent posts that looked worth visiting.
Amazing then that they should connect so strongly with me! I thought I would share links and I will try to set up a Pinterest board  which is a learning curve for me. I know some of you are doing Julie's 300 comments in 30 days challenge and are also visiting new blogs so I hope these will be of interest.

If you like photography or finding ways to take time out you may like this.

In this and my previous post I have written much about feeling overwhelmed and feeling distracted. Funny that the second blog I visited addressed these issues spot on!!  You can see them here and here.

By the way, let me know if you sign up for the 30 day Blogging Challenge!!  Thanks for popping by, I'll be back tomorrow.

BLOGGING - WHAT'S THE POINT?

I belong to an increasing number of Facebook groups and recognise that I am spending more time and more time there.  So much time that I loose hours every day.  Time that once I would have spent visiting blogs. Strange that something that was such an important part of my day has become overshadowed....

I have also questioned the purpose of my own blog posts.  Anyone who blogs will know it can take hours to put a post together. And I mean hours! Do I want to spend so much time doing this when there are so many other things I want to do?  So I asked myself:

'Blogging - what's the point?'

And what's interesting is that right on cue, my online friend Julie wrote a very thought provoking post.  It made me think more about blogging and What is the point?  Well, here's some of the answers I came up with relating to my own experience:

ONE:
Why blog?
Well, first I love connecting with other people and I am blessed with some wonderful friends and family.  But they don't always share my interest or 'get' what I do. It can be frustrating or disappointing to have something exciting/other to share and no one (who understands or appreciates what is involved) to share it with.  But when I signed up for my first online course which led me to start a blog I soon discovered that there are people out there like me!!  Yes, really!!  Others who get excited by all the things I do and love.  So not only do I have a connection but I also get to learn new things and pick up new ideas, because blogging is interactive and others share too. It can be really exciting and enjoyable as well as having a purpose.

What to blog about?
That is a question I often ask myself.  I have lots of diverse interests and love taking photos and living a creative life.  But I also love nature, reading/books, exploring new places in my campervan, learning new things, spending time with friends and family, food and anything to do with it.... I could go on but you get the picture!  I don't want a blog that solely focuses on one of these and when I think about the blogs I most enjoy reading they have a common theme. They encompass different parts of that persons life and so you get to know them as an individual. And that's what I want too.
A sharing of ME!
And while I know some posts may hold more interest than others I hope there is enough balance to invite visitors and followers of my blog to return.

TWO:

Over time I have developed a connection with friends and blogs that I follow regularly.  A casual comment can lead to conversation and more, and this year 'more' was meeting three people I got to know through blogging.  First there was Bernice when I visited Coventry and again when she invited me to stay with her, then Eileen when I visited Wiltshire, and more recently, Helena.  We had a wild and windy walk along the Firth of Forth and it was wonderful to see the spots where Helena takes photos to post on her blog. They already felt familiar!

THREE:
For me, visiting a blog is sometimes like popping into a friend for coffee and a chat. You never know how you will feel when you leave, though sometimes that friend may have a wicked sense of humour and there's a good chance you will go away with tears in your eyes and an aching belly!  Other times I visit a blog and find myself buzzing with new ideas that can lead on to other things, or read a post that leaves me thoughtful, happy, or sad. Because sometimes difficult times might be shared and I respect those who can write from their heart and get a balance of 'real' life and its ups and downs. It makes me feel more connected with a person, and that's the difference between some 'professional' bloggers who make an effort to have everything perfect. Don't get me wrong! Staged photos, good presentation and well written posts are to be admired but I want to be able to relate to the person - not feel that we are worlds apart.

FOUR:
I do not blog in order to gain recognition and any comments left are icing on the cake. No - more than that.  They can leave me with a big smile, the feeling that I had had a big hug, or a visit from a dear friend. Never under estimate the meaning of a few words thoughtfully left.... which is why I feel sad that I have neglected my own role in this. Interestingly when Julie wrote about comments (yes, I make no apology for mentioning Julie again!) it unravelled a lot of interesting discussion. And I recognised my own pattern:

1. Technology.
I sometimes use my mobile to read blogs but leaving a comment is sometimes challenging or s-o time consuming.  Sometimes I just give up or just leave brief words, but that doesn't satisfy me and sometimes I decide to revisit when I am on the computer. I may forget, not have time, and so the reasons roll.....
2. Lack of time.
I have been preoccupied by other things (mundane chores/life necessities), and Facebook. I have increased connections and 'business' networks, arranged to run book making workshops and demonstrations at local events. There have been meetings and formalities because creating a life you love takes effort and time. And Facebook.
3. Time doing other things.
I have read, walked, spent time in my campervan, blogged, developed new ideas and planned workshops, visited places of interest, got out my crochet, enjoyed lots of creative time and the company of others, made attempts at de-cluttering and organising, learned new things,
been sailing, to workshops and residentials, and I enjoyed the summer and break from my routine.

I And what I learned through all this is that there are only 24
hours in a day and how I spend them is important. I want to create regular time to visit blogs like I used to. Not because I want to increase my own following or number of comments left but because I have developed a addiction bad habit of wasting spending too much time on Facebook and I want to address the balance. But knowing this and doing something about it are different things so I am taking Julie's example and setting myself a challenge. I will be back with details once I have decided on a plan.

Meanwhile I know I have waffled, rambled, and gone on but these thoughts have been waiting patiently to be released. If you are still with me to the end, thank you!  Yes!  A big thank you! I am taking the helm and steering a new course!

IT'S MY BLOGIVERSARY and A GIVEAWAY!!!!

Three years ago I signed up for an online course called 'Take Flight'.  I'd never done anything like this before.  It wasn't cheap.  It felt a huge risk. But...

             WOW!!!

It turned out to be one of the best things I have ever done. Of course, I didn't know that at the time... I felt completely out of my depth. Some people had businesses or established blogs, some had big dreams and ambitions. And I felt like Christopher Columbus sailing into new territory.  I had a lot of learning and catching up to do!!   And I still feel like that a lot of the time....
I had no thought of starting a blog when I set out on that course. I had signed up to be part of a creative group where I could share my ideas and connect with like minded people. And starting a blog felt such a brave thing to do.  A fellow 'Flyer' and I took courage to do this together.... three years ago, to this day.

And what I did not expect when I set out on my journey, was the wonderful community of friends that I would meet along my way. My life has become all the richer for this. I went on to discover other online courses and made lots more friendships. But I learned that blogging is not something that is confined to online....

             Oh no!!

I now have a wonderful friend who lives quite near and so we see each other regularly. We met through Shimelle's 'EXPLORE' course when we were encouraged to find a buddy. Well, Pauline has become much more than a buddy. We both love photography and get excited over the same creative ideas and materials. We have so much in common.... she feels like a twin and I feel so lucky.

And I didn't anticipate going on a residential with blog friends, but I did!  Lizzie organised this with a band of helpers and what a fantastic time we all had!! I knew lots of the people before we went.... some by name, others because we have formed online friendships or follow each others blog. And after our meeting, closer and new friendships have been formed.  Some of us are meeting up again in November, at another residential. I can't wait!  And the other week, while I was on a day out, I arranged to meet up again with Ruth.  But what is magical about blogging is that you can also
call someone and invite them to meet even if you've not met before!  I did this while on a visit to Devon this Easter and I had coffee with Jenny.

There have been other unexpected surprises. I recently took part in a swap and I loved one of the cards that I received. I didn't know the artist but I emailed to say thank you... and another friendship was formed. And what is so exciting, is that in the very short time I have known Dawn, I have seen her 'Take Flight'.  After donating one of her paintings to raise money for families who lost homes and loved ones in Oklahoma, her work has taken off! Dawn did not expect or plan this and it is all thanks to this wonderful world of the internet and blogging!  And of course, to her generosity, because what goes round comes round.

I have plans to meet other blog friends too. I have two more residentials booked in the coming months, both arranged by people I met on that first online course.  And my connections interweave as friends meet other friends and my journey continues... becoming ever more exciting and adventurous. And I am so full of gratitude! I never imagined that my journey would unfold in this way and I feel I am still at the beginning. I still have so much more to learn! But I am proud of my first video downloaded onto YouTube. And I have  promised a tutorial to go with the Maxi Mini book. It is being written now. And I also have something else to reveal: my first neme. I want more focus writing my blog, and some fun! So more about this very soon.

Meanwhile, I want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has been part of my wonderful journey. I have been inspired, cheered on and enriched by your support, comments and friendship. I will be sending some good mail...

AND ALSO A GIVEAWAY....
If you would like the chance of winning one of my handmade notepads just leave a comment. You don't have to write a blog. Maybe you like to read them. And I will pick a name from random on Saturday 29th June.

Thank you for visiting. And when I am home from work I will be pouring  a glass of wine to celebrate.
Cheers!!!  Happy Blogiversary to me!!

COME JOIN THE BLOG HOP!!

Today I am celebrating one year of blogging, or as Ruth called it - my BLOGIVERSARY
I was initially very unsure about setting up a blog, but I'm so glad that I did.  I've made lots of new friends, some who I occasionally meet face to face as well as in blogland.  And some are joining me in my first Blog Hop..... I feel so honoured and privileged.  THANK YOU - you know who you are!!

And here are some of the firsts I celebrated a long the way.  For this has all been a learning curve and I now see that my blog has become another way to create and develop.  I am linking back to posts in case you want the option of dipping in, so let's start:

1.  It felt like a risk when I organised a Poll and a Giveaway.  But it turned out really special when  winner, Natasha, used one of the tags I made in her artwork and posted it on her blog.  I had the biggest smile on my face when I saw it!

2.  I did an on line course and was encouraged to join the blogging world in order to share my creative work and to meet other people.  This is my first post.

3.  My first residential was an amazing experience and we created from dawn to midnight.  I'm going again in October.  I can't wait!

4.  I made my first scrapbook page.  Handmade books and mini albums are my first love, but I  like scrapbook techniques and I LOVE some of the pages I have made during the year in taught classes at my monthly Eclectic Keepsake group.

5.  I had a first meeting with Moira.  We met through 'Taking Flight' the online course that introduced me to blogging.  As as well as becoming a friend Moira also runs the residential workshop that I attend.

6.  I posted my first video.   If you ever doubt yourself or your capability, just watch this.

7. I took part in my first Blog Hop & won a giveaway!! I couldn't believe my luck and had such fun visiting new blogs.

8.  My first online swap, where I exchanged a handmade gift as part of Louise Gale's Creative Colour Challenge.

9.   I took part in my first interview.  This was part of an online course where we were encouraged to think about different styles of writing and to interview our self!

10.  And finally, this is the first Blog Hop I have organised... so let's not waste any more time and let the fun begin!

HOW TO PLAY:

Listed below are names of those taking part.
Visit each blog in turn, and you will be directed to the next person on the list.  If you 'get lost' don't worry - just come back here and pick up the thread.

Looking back with a smile....

A year ago I enrolled on my first e-course 'Flying Lessons'.  And this led me to starting my blog.  Something I never even considered before.

And as my first year of blogging approaches I am thoughtful about the changes this has made to my life and the people I have met a long the way.  But I am not here to get philosophical - just to share with you one person who made an initial impression.  Makiko is a very talented artist specializing in pottery, but one thing that I always remember with a big smile is her amazing 'Blue Box and Books' which she made and shared on a video.  I've yet to make a video but this is one that I admire and aspire to.  Hope you like it too.

My blog wouldn't feel complete without sharing a photo, so here is one that I took the other evening when driving home.  Sun rise and sun sets are another thing that make me smile.  What makes you smile?
