I wonder if I could live my life as a traveler, if a living could be made from roving from place to place and writing whatever came into my head. Picture that: a life illuminated by random throws of darts at a map, to go where the sharp end takes me.
That sounds vaguely like the life of a travel writer, doesn't it? I'm not so sure I could do it. Still, the idea of it appeals to me. More so because the chance to get away, than for the opportunity to write a "review". Wait, reviews would mean 'travel guide' writer, not so much just travel writer. Maybe that's what I mean. I could be a travel writer, if that entailed me traveling, then writing about the aspects that interest me, not critiquing things or experiences for others.
There are days where I want to do it. Sell all my stuff, by an RV and drive around observing, watching, listening. I'd want to know more about how life is conducted in places outside my own. How people earn their daily bread (or how they make their daily bread), the terrain of their surroundings (urban, rural or in between), and what they like to eat (and where they get it). The flesh and bones of this world enchant me.
Then, I could retreat to my room in a local bed & breakfast, or hotel, and calmly, deliberately, parse out the evidence of my senses on the page or the monitor. Would that not be grand, to lay eyes on a different body of water, fill the lungs with different air, anoint the ears with the sound of a different voice? Then, have the luxury of writing it out? Yes, yes it would. To travel far, and see the moon from a different angle, and shape it with words: that would be contentment.
The waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Nantucket Sound are a shared ocean, but the waves in each are separate voices. I want to listen to them all, write their biographies. That way, when I return home, as I always do, I'll have some company at the fireside. We'll raise a toast, and dream of our next adventure.
Where do you want to wake up next, what voices do you want to hear?

Year Of The Tiger
According to Chinese astrology, 2010 is the Year of the Tiger. According to some information I have read, it is more specifically the Year of the Metal Tiger, or White Tiger. This is considered by some to be a jinx, or a sign of a bad year.
I think the folks in Haiti and Chile would agree.
Tiger years are supposed to be dynamic, full of change and constant happenings. So far, the theory is holding true, locally and globally. Tragedies great and small seem to be afflicting most people, some I know and most I do not. But I sympathize with them all.
According to astrology, I am a Snake. Snakes do not do well with chaos or rapid change. Ergo, Snakes and Tigers do not, as a rule, get along well.
Amen to that, brothers and sisters. Or should I say 兄弟姐妹 (Xiōngdì jiěmèi), in keeping with the Chinese inspirations for this post. I bring this all up because, on a lark, I bought a book on Chinese astrology for the year 2010. I was most intrigued by some of the descriptions in it, specifically about my Chinese astrological sign, but also about some of the people I know and love. And even some people I know and for whom I do not particularly care.
The thing that struck me right off the top was this little gem at the beginning of the chapter on the Snake:
"I think.
And think some more.
About what is,
About what can be,
About what may be.
And when I am ready,
Then I act."*
That pretty much sums it up. Me in a nutshell. And as I stated earlier, Snakes and Tigers do not get along well with one another. It has been and may continue to be a year of change, of opportunity, one in which I am advised to be careful, to not rely so heavily on myself but instead seek to maintain friendship with others.
Of that I have no doubts. I respect the Tiger, but I will not be intimidated into inaction. I will be careful. I will think. And then, when ready, I will act.
Come, then, friend Tiger, let us dance...but beware the Snake...

150 Lumps O' Goodness: A Sesquicentennial Of Sorts
I know what I said yesterday about being tired and pulling back, but truly this was too good to pass up.
The Family Unit and I went out for dinner at a nearby pan-Asian eatery. They put ‘diner’ in the name, but I have to believe that the Chinese equivalent of a US diner would be a very, very different creature indeed. I doubt Toto or Kenny G would be the music of choice.
One thing they do have is these big bins along the wall, under the condiment racks, containing big piles of fortune cookies. As part of the evening’s entertainment for Wee Lass I took her over to the fortune cookies so she could pick out some for us.
And lo, look at the fortunes I found! How about that for a tweak on the nose from the Universe?
Sitting there in the light of the table lamps, the “designed-to-make-everyone-happy-so-noone-ends-up-enjoying-it” type music, the clatter and blare of the open kitchen hard upon my ears, my vision narrowed in on those fortunes. It was an illuminating moment.
Combined with the common human fascination with round, even numbers, the fortunes served as the perfect base for this, my 150th blog post in 150 days. Given that my 100th post was a bit of a fireworks display, I thought something more sedate would be nice.
150 posts. Wow. I know there is a lot of hard work involved in that. But I have also had lots of good luck as well. I won’t try to figure that out, I’ll just ride the wave, and have another cookie.
Happy 150th, everybody! Thank you for giving me some good cookies!

Ancient Chinese Gumbo Secret Box
I have in my possession a small wooden box that I bought at a specialty gift store many, many moons ago. Originally it was for The Spouse, to hold some small jewelry. Later, she received a much larger jewelry box, and she gave this back to me. At the time I didn't know what to do with it. I am not an 'accessory' kinda guy (besides, the ladies get to wear all the cool sparkly stuff) but I didn't want to put it on a shelf and forget about it. The wood is nice and I liked it:
There were a lot, as you can see. Some of them are funny, some nonsensical, some are statements yes, but fortunes? I'm not so sure. So here are a few selected fortunes for you
What's Chinese for 'Iditarod'?
