An Idyllic Evening in the Meadow

Cotswold Sheep... grazing... in the setting sun...

sheep gazing in the meadow but they aren't what they seem to be
When viewed from a distance, these Cotswold Sheep seem startlingly alive.

the sheep edge on view shows them to be steel plates about a half inch thick
They were fabricated from cor-ten steel at 125 percent life-size, to avoid appearing diminished by the vast meadow.

Artist - Charles Layland, American, born 1928.

Cor-ten steel is a "weathering" steel that forms a protective layer (basically a fancy form of rust) that prevents them from rusting through.

According to the sign located near the sheep, "Historically, garden parks like the Morris Arboretum sometimes included ornamental farms with livestock. Not only did sheep trim the lawn, but as pictureque counterpoints to the culivated landscape, they provided a reference to an agricultural past."

Blah blah blah... This not-so stuffy art critic thought, "Hey these things are cool!"

I blinked twice at the first picture, not believing my eyes. And I was right not to believe my eyes!

Those sheep are a lot less work than ours were. Cool post.

Huge hugs!

Those ARE cool!

I bought a small rusted garden thingy (yeah, I'm an art critic too and know all the scientific suff as well) for my front ornamental bed. But mine DID rust through. This little danicing guy went through these phases of bended torture until he finally just collapsed.

Strange me. I liked watching the process.

I sold steel most of my career...Cor-ten works well in vertical applications, but lying flat, they can get standing water on them and can rust through- They made light pole bases out of it, and they started falling down after a few years!

They look so real from a distance! When I saw the first pic I was all like "where the hell is that? I want to go there!" And then I saw the second pic and realized I could have that in my backyard.

You and I critique art the same way.

Not on topic, but my family and I go to St. Michael's for vacation every year. We stay at Wade's Point Inn, between St. Michael's and Tilghman Island. If you are ever down that way in the summertime -- you won't believe this but -- in Oxford, Maryland, down a side street, is the BEST ICE CREAM IN THE WORLD!
