I was astonished to see he included one (slide 6) very near my house that I've never noticed before since it is slightly off my usual path by a couple blocks.
Always eager to meet a new tree to hug, I just had to go and see it!
May I introduce to you, my new "main squeeze"? The Methacton Oak.
According to the book titled “A History of Worcester Township”, “Among the very old oak trees in Montgomery County is the Methacton Oak, also referred to as the Charter Oak. Tradition has it that Revolutionary soldiers who died in the adjacent Methacton Mennonite Church when it served as a hospital, after the battle of Germantown, were buried, not in the Church burial grounds, but just outside the western wall, under a huge oak tree still standing there”.
According to the book, the tree is approximately 375 years old which takes it back to 1634. To put that in perspective, William Penn was born in 1644 and George Washington was born in 1732.
Notice the sunken aspect of the road near the tree. This road is nearly 350 years old too.
I left my car near the tree so you can get a sense of just how big this tree is. In fact, try as I might, I don't think I can hug this tree! I put my cap on a knob near the ground on the right side. According to the Eagle Scout, this tree is 14 1/2 to 16 1/2 feet in circumference.
By the way, there is a Red Oak behind the cemetery at the Old Dutchie Church (slide 13) that is 195 years old about 14 feet in circumference. I'll have to go back there and look again!
And it dont count for much
But I'm not letting go
I believe there's still much to believe in.
So lift your eyes if you feel you can
Reach for a star and I'll show you a plan
I figured it out
What I needed was someone to show me.
You know you cant fool me
I've been loving you too long
It started so easy
You want to carry on
Now I'm lost, lost in love, lost in love, lost in love
Now I'm lost, lost in love, lost in love, lost in love
Lost in love, lost in love, lost in love
Lost in love, lost in love, lost in love...

What a beautiful (and huge) tree. Looks like it's weathered the years very well. Makes you stop and think, doesn't it?
I really love big old trees. More trees and less buildings, please.
It's fun to discover new things in your own neighborhood!
*Singing Air Supply* Perfect tune.
What a majestic tree. The trees that surround you make the trees that surround me just babies. I like the way you put its age into perspective and also the way you put its size into perspective with the ball hat and car. Wow!
That tree is beautiful. I could see that being a place I'd love to go to...sit and read. :) Before kids of course. They're always in the way.
Good grief that is beautiful...... oak trees are my most loved trees in the whole world, when we (me tosser X and I) bought our little bit of land out at worlds end part of the reason was cos the perimetre of the land was tall oaks..... sigh...

Just the kind of place I'd love to sit under for a picnic, with a good book or just pen and paper. I bet there's a lovely breeze passing beneath it's branches.
By the way, thanks so much for everything this week. It really cheered me up :)
Hey IggGy on another note about huge Oak treees,... they used to cut the limbs from the big oaks for ribs and bow spares for the tall ships, because the natual curve of the limb were stronger than if you was to cut them to size from a straight piece of wood. but now a days they can use straight wood boards buy laminateing them.meaning to glue them togather but by changeing the wood grain one one way and one the other..and i bet you knew all this ...lol
Oh, just a small tree then? ;)
Spectacular!
What a magnificent tree! Just perfect for relaxing under and taking a quick nap.
OMGosh!! You got Leah and I leaves from this tree! I am in awe! Can hardly wait to see them. Leah's mom's favorite tree is the oak. I know Leah will make a birthday card for her mom with a real leaf from this magnificent tree! Thanks so much, my friend!!
