Mini Collar a Week: Blues and Greens

Last week’s mini collar was a complete success, and a very welcome one as well. A spot of illness totally ruined my timetable, so it was fortunate that this collar turned out just right, and I was already finished stitching it before things got derailed. With a new week beginning, I can use the start of a new collar to help me get back on track.

Blue Green Mini Collar

The design process for this collar was a lot more difficult than it would seem from the simplicity of the piece. I wanted to use an as-yet uncut strand of glass drops, but I also didn’t want to use all of them up in a single necklace. At the same time, I wanted to make sure that their presence in the piece would be worthwhile, so it was important to use them well. It was also important not to repeat the focal design that I’d used for the previous two collars, so it took some time to decide exactly how to balance out the drops. Although there isn’t a lot of complicated pattern work in this collar, it showcases the drops very well, and has just enough color to be interesting. I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

Dragonfly Drop Bead Palette

I haven’t begun to work on the new collar design just yet. I did want to work on something without drops for a change of pace, so I’ll have to spend some time with my beads and see what happens. Cleaning up my workspace, which has been accumulating bead packets for a while now should prove inspiring!

Bead Color Ideas: Blue Marble

For this week’s bead color ideas, I wanted to explore some possibilities for a curious quartet of beads from my drops and daggers stash. Some time ago I picked up four blue marble petal drops because they were on sale, and I thought they might make for interesting accents. Inevitably, they’ve been sitting in my stash ever since. Four beads can sometimes be just the right amount for a project, but with drops more are usually required, so I haven’t had any inspirations for these particular beads. Now that I’m on a mission to make lots of mini collars with whatever drops I can get my hands on, I may have finally found a way to use them. I just need to discover the perfect palette.

Delft Blue Bead Color Idea

A two-tone finish like the marbled glass of these petals can sometimes be hard to match. While one set of colors might work really well for half of the finish, the other half might clash. I tried out several different possibilities before finally settling on these three, and the first success was a little Delft blue inspiration with opaque bone white and opaque turquoise. I think the palette would look equally good with opaque white instead, or both the white and bone beads as well as the turquoise in the right proportions. I can see this palette in something spiraled, or perhaps in a patterned broad collar.

Dew Drops Bead Color Idea

Next I tried going a little earthier and combined opaque olive green with transparent dark topaz. The somewhat mossy-looking, plant-inspired palette makes the blue petals look like Dew Drops in the shade. I particularly like how the transparent topaz adds just a little bit of light to the palette, while also looking very mysterious like something from the deep woods. This palette would be great in something with lots of fringe and embellishments, such as a statement cuff or a cascade necklace.

Berry Salad Bead Color Idea

Finally, I really wanted to go with some strong contrasts. I picked up the transparent ruby seed beads right away, but took some time to find a third color for this trio. At last I went with gel sol pink for a Berry Salad palette that looks lively and delicious. This palette would be perfect for a mini collar, but I can also see it in a mulitstrand piece.

Work in Progress: Pink Magatamas

I’m just getting ready to start this week’s mini collar, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how this one turns out. After finishing last week’s collar, I had to get going on this one right away to keep up with the challenge schedule, so I basically just flipped open my tray of assorted drop beads and grabbed the first thing I laid eyes on (that wasn’t too similar to beads I’ve already used so far). I ended up with a few grams of pink-lined crystal short magatamas.

Pink Striped Mini Collar in Progress

The pale pink of these beads makes them really hard to work a palette around. Most other colors make them look really washed out. Luckily, I have an easy solution that will make the beads stand out, and allow this mini collar to mingle with my other designs. I’m going with black and white stripes! It make take a few tweaks to get a pattern that works, and I’m still not sure if I’m going to use the black 8/os. Hopefully I’ll be able to omit them and put a pretty big dent in the package of magatamas.

Pink Magatamas

Meanwhile, I haven’t touched the coconut dagger project or the final stage of the new ugly necklace. I’ve got a little bit of catching up to do, and hopefully I’ll be able to find the time to run more than one project at a time.

April Bead Stash Favorites

Have you ever been at a loss for what to do with your beads? I’ve been in this spot for a while now with some of the accents in my collection, and I finally figured out what I’m going to do with them. I’ve got something very special planned, and suddenly my bead stash has taken on a whole new level of inspiration. I can’t wait to start using them.

Lime and Cobalt Indonesian Glass Beads

Right now I’ve got my eyes on several different goodies in my bead cupboard, particularly my collection of lovely Indonesian glass from Happy Mango Beads. Colorful, organic, and stripey – just can’t get enough of these beads. I picked out my two all-time favorites to pose for this photo, and I liked the combination of lime green with striped cobalt so much that I think they’ll be paired with my first special project. Why didn’t I think of this combo before? It’s my favorite color pairing, and these beads have been staring me in the face for years.

Long Magatamas and Rizo Drops

I’ve also got oodles of drops, magatamas, and daggers that will be making much-awaited appearances soon. I’ve only just reached the point where I don’t feel like I need to save these beads for something really, really special. I just want to make pretty things with them. They’re also perfect for the idea that I have cooking, and I’m looking forward to seeing how many new ways I can come up with to make them shine. These long magatamas in lime and Rizo beads in opaque white might not go together, but I definitely want to use them both very soon.

10mm Sky Blue Glass Rounds

Also in the top of my to-use pile is this delicious strand of sky blue glass rounds. These baubles are a part of the nautical-themed March bead box from Blueberry Cove Beads. Of all the collections so far, this one is definitely my favorite. Nautical themes are not only classic, but they have so many amazing design possibilities. Boats, beaches, sailors, treasure…the list is endless. I don’t often have glass rounds of this size in my stash, so it’s great to have some new dimensions to work with, and the color is awesome.

What beads are tantalizing your creative side right now?

December Bead Stash Favorites

December is always a very hectic month, and I can usually tell when things are getting to that tipping point when I start to prefer easy and familiar things. I usually re-read favorite books, as they’re a much better escape than something new. In my workspace, I crave familiar materials and techniques. This month, I’m looking at some old favorites and a few standbys.

Lately I’ve really been in the mood for bezels, and I’ve been thinking of my stash of glass nuggets a lot. It’s been many years since I’ve used these in a project, and I haven’t even considered them for some time. I can’t say why, but I’m really looking forward to coming up with a project for using some of these little baubles – perhaps for a geek inspiration piece.

Glass Nugget Cabochon Mix

Drops and daggers are always a staple in my bead stash, and right now I’ve got my eye on some chunky cobalt blue briolette shapes that I have yet to cut into. They’re a little bit too big for most of the projects that I like, so I haven’t been able to come up with an appropriate design for them just yet. I’m thinking that they might be perfect for my next fringe experiment.

Cobalt Blue Glass Drops

Also from my stash of drops, these SuperUnos have been calling to me lately. I’ve been working on a few different design ideas featuring two-hole beads, but these single-holed variations are always so appealing. I love the pinched shape of the SuperUnos, and the Picasso finish on both of these colors is very inspiring. I’m hoping to use them for an extra bit of texture in some upcoming projects.

January Bead Stash Favorites

Over the past several months I’ve accumulated a lot of new beads. Many pieces are left over from my secret project, while others simply tagged along with my stock up orders and were forgotten in the mix. My mission for 2015 is to make my way through all of the amazing accent beads in my stash and see what they can do. This month I’ve got my eye on some really fun pieces.

I’m a huge fan of carved bone beads in almost any style, but these dyed tubes are definitely among my favorite. A while back I added a strand in crimson to my supplies, but haven’t had much of a chance to play with them. I’m thinking of a few different projects for this, including fringe and multi-strand. The color is just right for Egyptian designs, and looks amazing against turquoise.

Red Carved Bone Tube Beads

I might be able to combine my new bone tubes with these gorgeous turquoise Picasso teardrops. In 6x9mm, the size is very full – one could almost say plump. The Picasso finish is very enticing, of course, and the color is ideal for just about anything. I’m thinking these might make a great collar fringe, although there are only enough for one project. This ignites the hoarder in me that wants to hold onto them until the time is just right. I'm going to challenge myself to just jump in and use them up.

Turquoise Picasso Teardrops

Picasso has been on my mind a lot lately, and my final favorite this month keeps with the theme. I just recently picked up a strand of these delicate caramel daggers and I can’t wait to see them in action. There are definitely enough for a collar, plus at least one more project. I’m not going to worry about waiting for just the right inspiration to strike. All I need is a great palette of seed beads to back them up.

Work in Progress: Turquoise and Yellow

I’ve been so busy working on top secret projects these past few months, that I haven’t had any true works in progress to share. It is kind of fun to look at a piece I’m working on just as the beads – I’m looking forward to comparing all of these snapshots to the finished work when it’s all complete. I’m going to do my best to squeeze in a side project or two so I can share a little beadwork as well.

Right now I’m working with a really fun combination of turquoise blue and lemon yellow, plus black and white Rizos. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to work with Rizos lately, and they are incredibly versatile – much more so than regular drops. The small ends make them perfect for accents that replace other seed beads, and the long shape is really elegant in all kinds of fringe.

Turquoise and Yellow Beadwork in Progress

As soon as this project is complete, I’m embarking on a fantastic collar adventure. My African Christmas beads are washed and set out to dry right now. Can’t wait!

Work in Progress: Earthy Cuff

So much for getting things back on track – this week I’m still a bit cramped for time. Normally, I would pick up my handy bead tray and take it to my photography area for a nice crisp photo of the week’s project. Today I didn’t have quite have the energy. With school back in session this week, I’m not quite used to the early morning rush. Today I’m sharing a rare glimpse of my actual workspace, paint stains and all.

Czech Coin Cuff in Progress

Right now I’m putting together a secret something using a few new favorites: Czech dragonfly coins, Miyuki drops, and some 8/o Dyna-Mites. I had almost forgotten how truly lovely it can be to weave flat beadwork with just large seed beads, and I’m having a great time with this project.

Work in Progress: Vintage and Retro

My bead tray looks a bit chaotic this week. I’m just getting started on two new projects and wrapping up another all at the same time, breaking my one project at a time rule and then some. Now that school is out for summer we have a lot more time to ourselves here, so we’re finally getting a new embroidery pendant underway. Since I do most of my beading at night while my helper is sleeping, the pendants are built slowly over several days, making them perfect for nights when a project is done, but it’s too late to start something new. I was told very matter-of-factly that we would be using one of my new hieroglyph tab beads in the new pendant, so that’s where we’ve started.

Neon Retro and Vintage Style Egyptian Beads

I’ve also got a new full-project tutorial in the works, featuring some awesome neon seed beads and daggers from The Best Beads. The matte transparent finish is perfect for the neon colors. Like other transparent glass beads, they draw lots of light in, but the matte finish seems to hold it in place, giving the beads an intense electric glow.

I was able to try out some of my new Miyuki fringe beads in a secret project earlier in the week - although I chose them for the color rather than the shape, so for now I’ve only seen what they can do as ordinary drops. I’m hoping to incorporate them more thoroughly into some flat or tubular beadwork, which I think they’ll be perfect for.

Work in Progress: Lime and Cobalt

This week I’m juggling multiple projects, including a secret experiment using Rizo beads in a gorgeous transparent cobalt. I’ve paired them with pearly white for a soothing ocean look, which really shows of the glow of the glass. I’m also starting a new medallion pendant. My wonderful assistant chose a blue and green Egyptian face cabochon for this piece, and matching lime green felt. We were off to a great start! Then he chose creamsicle orange as our first round of color - I can’t wait to see what else turns up!

Pendant and Rizo Bead Works in Progress

Last week’s pendants turned out great, although I haven’t had a chance to add their cords yet. I’m still experimenting with fish leather, and it’s probably my favorite new material this year. Some new colors just arrived and they’re really calling to be stitched. I've also been keeping careful notes for an upcoming post that will reveal some beader-friendly tips on using this interesting leather.

March Bead Stash Favorites

I had nearly run out of exciting, inspiring bead faves when the time came to stock up again. I’ve been slowly cultivating the supplies I need for my top secret project, and they are all totally gorgeous. This month I’m really excited about blues, and a few fun shapes.

Now that I’ve been back to using Czech seed beads for awhile, I’m rediscovering some old favorites. There are several different shades of AB hanks ready and waiting, and these dark blue ones are a favorite. What I love about this finish is that the beads look like one color and a mix all at the same time, and they’re fun to pair with opaque contrasts.

Dark Blue Iris Seed Beads

I also treated myself to a new strand of freshwater pearls, and there’s no beating the amazing shade of blue in these ones. I love the shine and the shape, but mostly the solid weight of a great round pearl. It's almost a shame to take them off the strand - they look so gorgeous all in a row. These turquoise pearls are going to be perfect in some ocean themed designs.

Turquoise Blue Freshwater Pearls

Finally, I’ve stocked up on Rizo seed beads in a few new colors, including black and white. I’ve played a little bit with this shape in the past few weeks and I love how they work as drops, not just in fringe but incorporated into beadwork as well. They've got the same appeal as daggers, but the delicate feel of seed beads. I'm really excited about using the white ones, which have just a tiny bit of translucence to them.

First we have a beautiful batch of lavender colored acrylic round drops. These 6mm beads are incredibly sweet with just the right shade of soft purple. I’ve also included a custom mixture of yellows in assorted shapes, and green pear drops that are totally disco. How to Style a Skull Necklace

For this month’s necklace collage, I was hoping to find a great statement necklace with bold orange beads - something pumpkin-y that would be perfect for fall outfits. I was picturing some leafy green ensembles with perhaps a hint of warm yellow. But when I went on the hunt for some great orange jewelry, I came across an exciting skull charm necklace with orange leather and shell dangles. It was too good to resist.

With this necklace as a starting point, I switched gears and opted for a more Beetlejuice inspired look - stripes, black and white, and spookiness. Although I don’t normally go for printed tops, I thought that something graphic would make a great backdrop for skull beads, and found one that went perfectly with the gold and brown palette. To bring back a hint of pumpkins, I added a Chan Luu bracelet with orange rounds.

July Bead Stash Favorites

Summer and the beach go together like carnivals and cotton candy - especially when you live in a cold climate. The few months of the year when it’s warm enough to swim outdoors are precious, so it’s no wonder that July and August are favorite months of aquatic themed designs.

Although I’m feeling pretty swamped with the approaching deadline for my Egyptian Gods challenge less than six months from now, I can’t help but be inspired by sunny weather and days at the beach. Right now, all of my bead favorites are fit for mermaids.

Shell and pearl beads are one of my biggest bead weaknesses. They are natural and sustainable, but they’re a little on the anonymous side, so I try to keep my consumption to a minimum. This is tough, because I adore the natural, organic patterns and colors in shell beads. Right now I’m craving a project for this gorgeous strand of hammer shell heishi from Happy Mango Beads. The chip shapes and soft browns are so perfectly beachy.

Hammer Shell Heishi Beads

Ladder-stitching Egyptian inspired cuffs has really helped me get over my fear of thread-fraying bugle beads, and they’ve really grown on me. I’m starting to build up a stash of bugles again, and right now my favorites are these lovely satin aqua tubes from Shipwreck Beads. Not only do they have a great tropical hue, but the finish is perfect for breezy summer designs.

Satin Aqua Bugle Beads

The newest addition to my stash are these pretty turquoise Rizo seed beads from Fusion Beads. I haven’t had a chance to try them out yet, but I’m eager to see how they play in my designs. I love the uniform shape, which should provide the same effect as drops, but with a little more sharpness.

June Bead Stash Favorites

There are so many different ways that a bead style can become an instant favorite. Perhaps it’s the color or shape, ease of use, or the way it fits perfectly into our favorite designs. Whatever the reason, some beads just inspire love at first sight. Right now I have my heart set on a few different accents in my stash, all of them ready and waiting for the perfect project.

Whenever I need a spool of Fireline, I set a little budget and go on the hunt for new bead treats to include in my order. I usually stock up on some favorite seed bead colors, and then keep my eyes open for some interesting accents to try. During my last shopping session, I decided it was time to finally give the Swarovski Elements gemstone pearl colors a shot. Luckily, Fusion Beads has their own custom mixes, and this one called Siren caught my eye. It includes dark lapis, ivory, jade, turquoise, and red coral, but I see lapis, alabaster, turquoise, blue faience, and carnelian! These should come in handy in some upcoming Egyptian designs.

Siren Swarovski Elements Pearl Mix

Awhile back I purchased some teal coconut rondelles on a whim, and ended up devouring them rather quickly. Every project I added them to seemed to turn out perfectly. Since then, I’ve had my eyes open for other lightweight heishi and rondelles, which make great accents for collars. These bone spacers from Happy Mango Beads definitely fit the bill. They’re a little larger than what I’m used to using, so I’ll have to make sure that whatever project they end up in has room for bold fringe. I’m very eager to cut the string and see what they can do.

Natural Bone Rondelles

Finally, I have some neglected beads. Several months ago I purchased these three strands of gorgeous blue Czech teardrops from Shipwreck Beads to use in collars and was very excited to work with them - especially the transparent cobalt. I placed each one in the tray that I use for shaped seed beads like Tilas, peanuts, and magatams. And because I hardly ever use these types of beads, I quickly forgot all about these lovely strands. I rediscovered them recently while looking for spiral rope accents, and I’ve bumped them back up to must-use status.

Warrior Goddess Collar

Although many of the lesser known Egyptian gods offer very little in the way of inspiration, some of them are instantly appealing. Anat was one of Egypt’s borrowed goddesses - a fierce warrior and wife of Set. I knew right away that only a collar would do for her, and it had to have daggers.

Anat the Egyptian Warrior Goddess Warrior Goddess Bead Palette

I put together a palette of black, red, and dark topaz for the netting, and cut into my new strand of triangle daggers. It wasn’t until the beads were loose that I realized they’re actually double-drilled, but I was already committed. The color and shape are perfect for the spear-wielding goddess.

I made this collar quite short, fitting close to the neck like armor. I love the shape of the fringe beads with this piece. The angular shape is a much better fit for the protector of the Pharaohs than a traditional dagger bead.

Bead Color Ideas: Picasso Daggers

Although neutral colors like black, white, and beige are meant to go with everything, they can sometimes be tricky to work with in bead form. The subtle changes that a bead’s finish can add to a base color demand more careful consideration when choosing a great palette. I recently treated myself to a lovely strange of Picasso finish daggers, and although the color is essentially brown, the hints of green and orangey topaz make it difficult to match. Before I can get to work on a new collar with these uniquely shaped beads, I need to find just the right mix of colors.

One of my favorite ways to use brown is as a replacement for orange in contrasting palettes. Rather than substitute, I thought I’d first try to combine these daggers with a more obvious shade of orange. This bright and peachy orange is a lot more cheerful than the muted daggers. The addition of Capri blue, which is bright but not busy, helps blend things together in Desert Sunset.

Desert Sunset Bead Palette

I was pretty happy with how the first palette turned out, so I thought I’d try the same method again. This time, I added pretty wisteria purple for the contrast, and dark topaz for the other ‘orange’. It's not as bright as the first palette, but the wisteria makes it somehow sweeter. I particularly like the way the purple highlights the hints of pea-soup green in the daggers. I’m calling this palette Spring Fog.

Spring Fog Bead Palette

The complementary colors seemed to be working just as well as the contrasting ones thus far, so in the final trio, both seed bead colors are variations of those in the accent beads. For Driftwood, I chose light topaz for a softer brown, and shamrock green to give things a little kick of freshness. Although the seed bead finishes are completely different, both work well together when balanced with the Picasso.
