Well, this week I went back to work.
WHAT?! School is back in session already? It isn't Labor Day yet!
Well, here in Iowa we generally start the school year 1 to 2 weeks before Labor Day. Our district wanted to get first semester finished before winter break, so we had to start our year even EARLIER! LOL
Matt and I spent last weekend in Kansas City to catch a few baseball games, so last week I made sure to get into my classroom and start putting it together. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are "work days", where we are supposed to have time to get our rooms prepared, but usually we have a number of meetings to attend which eats into our preparation time.
The kids came back on Thursday and Friday. It's great to start the year on Thursday because, honestly, neither the kids nor the teachers are used to being on a regular schedule. Even during the workdays I was tuckered out at the end of the day.
When a district starts on a Monday, by Wednesday the kids and teachers are just zombies.
This year will be quite a year. I'm teaching....
2 sections of Algebra
1 section of 7th grade Accelerated Math
3 sections of 7th grade Regular Math
1 section of Additional Instruction (a class of intensive intervention for a small group of students)
1 section of Tutorial (a structured study hall)
So I've got a good bit on my plate.
Friday night I slept VERY well. It usually takes me a couple of weeks to get my body back on a regular sleep schedule. I get home in the afternoon and desperately want to take a nap. But if I do that, I stay up late, and well, that defeats the purpose. LOL

HOLY CRAP! No planning period? No duty period! Man, you've got a FULL schedule!
ReplyDeleteWe're still 2 weeks from starting thanks to our King's Dominion Law. You can read about it with this Google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=Kings+Dominion+law
So anyway, try to get sleep! We are off our ten hour days, so I will get an extra hour every day, but without being off on Fridays. Not sure it's not a bad deal!
Peace <3
Jay
Oh I do have a planning period. But no duty period - yay!!!
DeleteEvery year people get their panties in a bunch over "how early the school year is starting" and how it cuts into the summer. Of course they don't think about if we start later, guess what, we get out later! We'd be going into mid-June!
We started back with students on Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday were workdays. It's been a tiring week with my usual social studies classes, minus one which was replaced with a new career planning class, and then their is the one English class that I teach. We have more students this year than any year since I've been there, so my classes are larger this year. Also, my English class is designed to be a little more intensive this year than it has been in the past. I've also never taught a career planning class, so this is very new to me. Nor have I ever taught a class without a textbook, but the career planning class was assigned without a textbook. I am enjoying my classes this year so far, a me the kids seem to be enjoying it too.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful school year, Robert!
Holy crap! At least I'm just teaching math! My smallest class is 15, my largest is 31 (the accelerated class, as it is the only section we offer). The kids are actually good this year, but of course I could just be in the honeymoon phase of the year.
DeleteHave a great school year as well!
Jr. has one more week left of summer break. We usually go back the week before Labor Day. So, their first weekend is a long one which works out nice.
ReplyDeleteBTW - Jr. is going to be in 6th grade... AHHH!!! He's growing up too fast!!!
Nope, he's right on schedule! HAHAHA It's dad who is slow to catch up!!!
DeleteJay
My oldest nephew is now in 7th grade - the grade I teach!!!! AHHHHHH! He's not supposed to be that old! Noooooooo!
DeleteMake Junior get out and enjoy the last few days. I always regret the amount of time I spent on my ass watching reruns of "America's Next Top Model" over the summer.
Don't judge. :-)
No judging here... I love me some Tyra.
DeleteWe've had a pretty action packed summer. His gymnastic competitions brought us to New Orleans and Louisville. He's into video games just like every other kid... mainly Minecraft. I do pull him away every evening to go swimming for an hour or so. It's been a fun summer... hate to see it end.
The summer is over! So depressing!
Deletewondered where you were...have a good year!
ReplyDeleteSounds busy ... but sometimes that makes the time go faster! Have a great year. And I hope you find time to keep us updated.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that many preps against your contract? Most districts out here say no more than 3 preps.
ReplyDeleteI've been back since July 27 btw. Kids came back August 4.
I would love to retake algebra merely for the joy of working with numbers. In school I saw it merely a dreary task I had to learn to get a passing grade. This is another example of wanting to return to school to relearn what I didn't appreciate.
