It's Grim

Leave it to Uncle Bonsai to put out an album that's syrupy sweet and creepy. Just as cute as the cover implies, then notice the vulture next to the smoke from the chimney forming a skull, the grave, the fish spilling out of a bowl .. everything is not what it appears at first. Great dark humor.

The Essential Uncle Bonsai!

"This disc represents quite a departure from my usual tastes in music. It's entirely acoustic, and features the cleverest, most insightful songwriting I've ever heard. The band's "light motif structure" revolves primarily around the differences between men and women, which they present in a hilarious, non-threatening manner. I mean it-- some of this stuff is laugh-out-loud funny. Additionally, the performances are flawless, with lots of skillful vocal harmonizing, and a great stage presence, as demonstrated in their interactions with the audience during the show at which this album was recorded." -- Amazon reviewer

Although you could say Uncle Bonsai was an acoustic-folk trio band, their songs are well written, sensitive and usually absurdly comical. They got some national attention from Dr. Demento for "Penis Envy", "Fat Boys" and "Boys Want Sex in the Morning" - with the resulting FCC problems. But songs like "Silent Night", which refers to loosing a father, boosts Uncle Bonsai to an appeal beyond traditional folk music -- into the unexpected.

For anyone that lived in Seattle during the 80's, this is probably deja'vue since the band was extremely popular (and my roots are showing).
