Battle of the Bands- Round 2

Hey y'all!!! So i'm working this week in Ohio and i've been swamped. Its funny that the BOTB has ended up being both weeks that i've traveled. I almost went to bed when i remembered that tomorrow is the 15th and thats when the battles get posted.   Remember how it was raining cats and dogs when i was in St Louis? Well I brought it with me here and its been crazy storming around me.  Last night the winds and the thunder woke me up.  Stay safe out there if you're in the path of these storms. Its also crazy here with some kind of baseball All Star shindig.  Cincinnati is the host of the sport thing and all the hotels here are packed and tons of people are here.  Meh! Is how i feel about baseball.
Lets get started on the songs shall we.  Its after 11 and i have to get up early. This is my second time to play in the battle and i'm nervous that someone has already done the same battle.  I guess i just need to not worry and also know that i have different followers so your vote will be a new one.
My song this week is called Bad Company by the band Bad Company.  The song was released in 1974.  They were a British band and were considered hard rock back in the 70's.  They also have other hits such as Feel Like Makin Love, Running with the Pack, and Cant get Enough.  I have their greatest hits CD and its a great road trip CD to listen to!!

Ironically 5 years ago on my birthday May 17th, 2010 a very heavy metal hard rock band called Five Finger Death Punch released their album that included a cover of this song.  I ask you to be open minded because quite frankly, i think they do a FANTASTIC job!! Some of their other songs are pretty heavy but they reined it in on this song.  This band started in Las Vegas in 2005 so they've only been around for 10 years. They're doing pretty good and have won a couple of Indie awards, Rock Radio awards, etc.  They released a song last year that i like called Wrong side of Heaven.  I'll play it for you sometime....

I am excited to hear your vote and i will post the results on the 21st i think.  HAHA- i have to check to see when i'm supposed to.  There is quite a few battles being hosted and the list is at Stephen's page.  Please Please go there and vote for other songs. You may hear some new songs and artists that you like.   Have a great day tomorrow!!

  2. Hi, dear Holli! I hope you are no longer in the "bad company" of that bad weather and I wish you a safe trip back home.

You don't have to ask me to be open minded about a heavy metal band like Five Finger Death Punch. Me likey metal. I have a large collection of the stuff and play it every day. I also like the hard rock band Bad Company and have their music in my collection. Both recordings in today's battle are great. I could listen to either one multiple times without getting tired of hearing it. I wish I could vote for both. If this contest was taking place in the 70s, I would be voting for Bad Company because their British hard rock sound was popular at the time. "Seasons change and so did I. You need not wonder why. You need not wonder why." In recent years I have developed a taste for the harder stuff. I appreciate the bigger, bolder, darker, more aggressive metal sound of Death Punch because it's right in step with the times and it resonates with me where I am today. I join Ms. Janie Junebug in casting my vote for Five Finger Death Punch.

Thank you, dear friend Holli, and stay safe up there!

  3. Holli, I used this song in a battle not too long ago. But something happened to the post after the battle. It just vanished. Oh well...5FDP does a good job and perhaps one of their best remakes. They are a bit too heavy for my taste where as Bad Company has a little edge to their style and is far more listenable. I going to give my vote to the band Bad Company! Good battle!

Come by to vote when you can in my Mr. Bojangles #BOTB showdown! ;)

  5. Five Finger Death Punch does a great version of this song! I really like it! BUT I'm going to go with Bad Company for my vote. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Bad Company. I have more BC songs on my ipod than any other band! They were also the very first concert I ever saw (back when the ticket price was $6!!!). So yeah, Bad Company gets my vote.
Thanks for featuring this song today. It put me in a good mood!

  6. Hi Holli; All I can say is WOW!! I love the original SO much and didn't think anything could deter me from voting for it BUT.....
Five Finger Death Punch's version was love at first listen and it rocked me to my very core. Fantastic!! Can't believe I haven't heard it before. They remind me so much of Metallica - one of my all time favourite metal bands. \m/

  7. I'd love some storms right about now. The heat's been killing us. Thankfully, the apartment finally got around to fixing the AC after nearly a week of it being out.
Ok, this was a no brainer for me: Five Finger Death Punch. I really like this song. Wrong Side of Heaven is great and pretty much the entire album 'War Is the Answer' is awesome. Also, they aren't very heavy compared to some of the other stuff I listen to ;)

  8. I didn't know BC fell off the "considered hard rock" list, lol! While I have heard OF FFDP, I had never listened to them. Paul Rodgers was always a bit bluesy for my tastes to be a big favorite. I have to say I enjoyed FFDP and I'll give them my vote this round.

  11. Wow, Holli... This one was a total surprise for me. The original is a great song (yes, awesome for road trips!) and I expected my vote to go that way--and then I played the cover. Wow. Look, I'm not a supporter of war or martial philosophy in any way, but that video gave me chills. Good chills. Patriotic chills. And I'm not even American :) Whether it's the video or not, I felt the Five Finger Death Punch version gave the song a depth and a dimension it lacks in the original. So... yes, another vote for FFDP :)

And thanks for the visit and vote over at Quiet Laughter -- much appreciated. Hope your travels go well, and the rain eases up :)

  13. During BOTB, I'm never quick to be close minded. I like to be very open minded when selecting my vote. Mostly because I am often surprised by my vote and have even voted against my favourite singer/band. I like the original song of this, but 5FDP gave it the ooomph I enjoyed.
Vote - All five fingers vote for 5FDP
Thanks for posting this song, something new for me.

    1. Thanks Jeffrey! I probably should have chosen my words more carefully about the open mindedness. I just know many people who shut down when I say heavy metal and don't care to listen. I'm glad you liked the song by 5FDP as much I do!! I have your vote down for them.

    1. Hi John, my apologies for duplicating a battle. This is only my second time to participate and I knew I ran the risk of playing the same one. The good news is that a few of my commenters heard it first here so not all is lost. :)

  15. Welcome back, HOLLI! Glad to have you joining us again!

Well, let's begin with the fact that without BAD COMPANY, 5FDP wouldn't have had this song to rip off-- er... I mean, to cover (and try to make mo' pow'ful by just adding loudness and noise).

I learned from Cathy's earlier BOTB installment that I hate 5FDP. I mean "hate" as in I hope the very next war that America launches (on behalf of, and on the orders of The International Bankers who orchestrate ALL wars) is against 5FDP (who I am quite certain are really just a bunch of pansies underneath their leather 'n' tattoos).

I'm just joking. (Not really though.) Most of these "tough guys" (particularly in "entertainment") are poseurs. Tough name; tough attitude; tough sound. Let the bombs start falling and see who craps their pants first. It'll be the tough poseurs, I guar-juan-tee.

Give my vote to THE ORIGINAL! Give my vote to... BAD COMPANY... until the day I die!

    1. Sooooo tell me how you really feel about 5FDP. LOL. I love your true honesty- seriously its refreshing. I got your vote down for the one and only original Bad Company and NOT for the posers!!
Thank you so much for allowing me to participate in the BOTB's. I believe this will be my last one. Its intimidating that I don't know what battle has already been done and I have a feeling I stepped on toes for duplicating. I bow down and hand my key back to the city of the battles before me.

    2. HOLLI ~
You have stepped on NO TOES! And even if you had... so what? Let those toes toughen up and heal!

BOTB is now 2 years old, and even I can't remember all of the songs that have been used. Have some been duplicated? Yeah. At least a couple, that I can think of. (I know 'All Along The Watchtower' has been done more than once; and I think 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' has been, too - but not necessarily by the same artists.)

100% honesty here: I know that Bad Company has been used before, but I can't say for sure which song. I mentioned FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH only because I never heard of them before Cathy used them in a BOTB, and I absolutely HATED them. I can't even say for sure which 5FDP song Cathy used. It might have been 'Bad Company', or it might have been some other song. All I know is that I FIRST heard of them in a BOTB by Cathy, and I despised their sound, and I despised their name. (Oh, yes, let's all lean toward love and understanding but... we'll name our band "Five Finger Death Punch". The name ALONE tells me all I need to know about the soul of that band! Sorry, but I'll never be a fan of a band with such a violent, destructive, negative name as 'Five Finger Death Punch'. Maybe that's just me.)

But I don't mind BOTB repeats (it's bound to happen). I tried to Google Cathy's old BOTB blog bit where she used 5FDP, to see if the song was "Bad Company" and if she put it up against the band "BAD COMPANY", but I couldn't find an answer. (She uses WordPress, however, which I think is a poor, sub-par website, and that's probably why I couldn't even Google her old BOTB installment and find the answer.)

I'm genuinely sorry if my comment offended you and made you want to de-participate in BOTB. One thing I am known for is being brutally honest (a trait that is not at all popular in today's homogenized, politically correct atmosphere). If you leave BOTB because you're no longer interested in participating, that's fine. But if you leave because you think I was annoyed that you duplicated a previous BOTBer's BOTB (which may or may not be true - I honestly don't know), then you are leaving BOTB for a very wrong reason.

I had NO PROBLEM with your BOTB installment. I simply HATE everything about a band called "Five Finger Death Punch". My personal philosophy is: Let people with minds like that be nuked from our existence. That's all - no mo' and no less.

I sincerely hope you don't quit BOTB. Nothing you have done offends me. I simply voted on your BOTB blog bit and submitted a (refreshingly, non-P.C.) opinion.

In the end... "I gotta be me!"

If you leave BOTB, please don't do it for the WRONG reason!

    3. Holli, hope you don't quite. With the number of songs out there, we are all bound to repeat the same song from time to time. But there is always a new audience we are presenting the song to. More than likely, we all present different artists covering the same song as well. I'm new to the BOTB, so it's very likely, anything you offer up that has already been covered, I have not heard the battle yet.

Don't give up, keep up the good work. You offer a great diversity to the BOTB team. Looking forward to hearing more battles from you.

  17. I love this song and actually I don't mind the heavy metal version but my fav is still Bad Company. I love more the rock and roll than the heavy metal vibe. I read some of the responses and I hope you do not quit. My goodness, everyone can duplicate things and the vote is for your post not what was done before. I don't participate because, though I love music, I fell I just don't know enough. This should not stop you. This is enjoyable to listen and to have fun and that is what counts:)

  18. I'm late, as usual, and have been trying to make the rounds a cast a vote quickly, so, I haven't taken the time to read or even scan any of the comments at other BATTLES, but I did here, because I knew I had heard the name 'Five finger Death Punch' somewhere (and believe me they would not be on my normal listening radar) and was wondering if this had been used in a previous BATTLE. Anyway...I did read a few of the most recent comments and I SINCERELY HOPE YOU DO NOT DROP OUT OF BOTB, because you feel you 'stepped on someones toes'. This is not the only song that has been DONE BEFORE in this particular BOTB installment (July15th). It may have stood out more because of the non-mainstream group with the unusual name, but that's all. BOTB is now in it's second year with over 20 participants (some one and off and some gone by the wayside), so repeats are inevitable. NOBODY should have a problem with that. I certainly don't!!!

Anyway...I vote with the original Bad Company on Bad company, that cover by the band with the unusual name just doesn't do it for me.

  19. HOLLI ~
Twice I have attempted to Email you but I am unable to find an Email address for you. There's a link on your blog that says "Email" but it leads to something else - an rss feed or something. At any rate, my computer freezes up for a long time when I bring up that page, and when it finally loads, I still can't find an E addy for you.

But I want to reiterate that there's nothing wrong with duplicating a BOTB contest. You're brand new with us, so how were you to know which songs have or have not been done? But anyone who would BOTB Willie Nelson is someone we NEED in BOTB. So please don't quit on us!

I wasn't the least bit upset by your Battle. I'm just tired of the glorification of extreme violence in America, and so it gave me great pleasure to publicly criticize 5FDP and to cast a vote for Bad Company's 'Bad Company'.
