The "Other" Cherry Blossoms (With Bonus Cheesetastic Video)

Want to get your cherry blossom on but don't feel like fighting the mob scene at the Tidal Basin?   Some of the most beautiful cherry blossoms in the Metro area aren't at the feet of  Thomas Jefferson, but are up the road in Bethesda's Kenwood neighborhood located just beyond the DC border.  The 1200 white and pink blossom Yoshino cherry trees line the streets of Kenwood, creating an umbrella of flowers over the homes and roads.

Despite living in the area for 25+ years I had never seen them and luckily picked the perfect day last Sunday to enjoy their spectacular, natural beauty.

The trees are on private property so if you visit please stay off the lawns and definitely don't climb the trees, no matter how tempting!

There were several stands usually staffed by children, selling cookies, snacks and drinks for charity.

BONUS CHEESETASTIC VIDEO!

BONUS VIDEO is taken in Kenwood Circle filled with throngs of people enjoying the Spring day. (This is my first video with music--be kind about the somewhat lame cover of the Byrds "Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season)"!

Dear Mother Nature

Dear Mother Nature,

Please re-check the date on the calendar and adjust the temperature accordingly.

Regards,

Herb

P.S. Please accept this request with all due respect and don't go all Mother Naturey on my shivering ass.

Signs of Spring I

Friday March 14, 2008

Springtime on 13th St! Looks like my daffodils are in full bloom. When I was a kid in Southern Indiana we would shoot with our BB guns the "heads" off the invading daffodil armies. I don't think you are allowed to do that in DC.

The pansies survived the winter and so did a few of the ornamental cabbages. Or is that kale? The chicken bone mulch thoughtfully provided by passing pedestrians helps my plants survive harsh DC winters.

Did someone plant this at 3:00 am? Must.Do.Some.Weeding.

And speaking of spring cleaning my desk area is out of control and I really need to get around to installing those fugly CFC light bulbs.

BLOOMOFF!

13th St NW Spring 2007

The Spring Flower Circuit has finally stumbled into DC and the horticultural party in my garden has started, albeit somewhat late. The pansies, those ubiquitous twinks of the garden remained upright and perky during most of the cold weather of February and March and continue to put on a colorful and loud show when not making catty comments about passerbys over 40 wearing Abercrombie and Fitch apparel.

The sight of crocuses blooming is normally the first sign of Spring but this year it appears mine did not buy their tickets in advance and are lost somewhere in the coat check of the 9:30 Club.

Robust and bearish, the daffodils were slow to arrive as though there was first a required stop at an all- you- can-eat buffet at the Miracle-Gro Bar and Grill. Arriving in waves with lookalike friends, these jolly yellow fellows can be expected to stay until early May or last call whichever comes first.

My tulips, the smooth and beautiful Circuit Queens of Spring, have not appeared at all and are still hiding in the mulch, rolling and waiting in vain for Nation[s] to reopen.
