Want to know why I made this big silly looking scarecrow this late in the season?
It is supposed to scare away owls. We've lost twelve grown guineas since the beginning of spring. Only three left of the fifteen best guineas we've ever owned. These were the guineas that were hatched late in the season last year and I cared for them all through the cold winter months.
I read on line that a scarecrow would frighten away owls, but you need to move the scarecrow from place to place occasionally.
Her head is way too big, but yesterday was Monday, Poppy went back to work, and I was busy busy! Too busy to re-do her head. She borrowed my cutest overalls, which look much better on her than on me anyway.
Before dark last night, Poppy secured her to back steps not far from the cedar tree where the three guineas roost, then hooked up a light to shine on her.
Don't usually hang clothes in the front yard but it was so darn hot yesterday, and this line, still up from the yard sale, was close to the front door...so why not! I did hang the sheets on the clothesline in the back. A neighbor stopped by and said, you need to take a picture of the quilts on the clothesline.
Been meaning to tell you that after adding lime to the pond, the algae went away. We are so glad! It looks much better and especially so after Poppy mowed. Eli likes it too!
Better get busy. Got more things to do and Poppy will be home at noon. Don't the days just fly!
Speaking of being busy....in Walmart, I spoke to an elderly lady, bout like myself, I've known since 2003. She has worked at Walmart what seems like forever! I said to her, I thought you would have retired by now. She said, "now why would I retire and sit home looking at four walls"? I just can't imagine! There has always been SO MUCH to do at home! Everybody is different!

Another nail biter!
Oh no! It's thundering again!
Glad Poppy is home and I'm not alone. My intent was to get Bun Bun and Fiona in their cages before today's storms rolled in. This storm slipped up on us.
a pond or a golf course?
It's the pond! The county extension agent did come out and look at the pond. It's planktonic algae, he said. We learned too that if a pond needs lime, it will not respond well to fertilizer, and Poppy fertilized the pond early this spring. We need to spray the pond with an algaecide and when the algae is gone, add lime. Sounds like work to me.
Never finished this post yesterday as the thunder and lightening continued until late. I talked Poppy into going with me to put the bunnies in their cages. I felt like lightening might not strike me if he was with me. :(
and a kitty cat picture...
Smokey, sound asleep in the teeny tiny sewing room. If you are wondering about the ugly quilt, well that was my first try at making a quilt. I used Poppy's worn out flannel shirts, jeans, work pants, and cheap muslin. Poppy and I were living in an apartment while the cabin was being built in the late 1980's. I sewed it together by hand and it has actually held up through many washings.
Gosh, can I get any more boring! Hope you will come back.

There is a small thrift store I enjoy going in whenever I am in Henderson and since I was in Henderson picking up a prescription Saturday, I stopped by. I spent less than four dollars and came home with two good tee shirts, three pairs of socks, and these...
These eleven squares cost me eighty cents. Not bad. Oh, you know what would be pretty? An old fashioned looking quilt. Yeah right! I really need to start cutting up stuff to make a quilt! As mama used to say, "there's not room to lay a pin down now". Everywhere I look in this house there is a pile something waiting to be mended or washed or ironed or put away or hauled off or emptied or picked or canned. A quilt would be mighty pretty made out of these squares. October seems like a good time to start on this.
You know my clothesline broke a few days ago. Poppy put it up again by wrapping it around two trees. It sags a little but serves the purpose. I drug up the perfect old board to lift the sagging line and keep the sheets from hanging too close to the ground. Old folks used to do that your know...use an old board to lift the clothesline...
By the way, the little red house is growing on me. The color is looking more and more like redwood and that's a good thing...
Better get going. It's a job around here at bedtime getting Bickett set up in the laundry room for the night, and Weetie in the front porch swing. Eli has his new waterbed and fan and ten dollar bone on the porch for the night. Once all these are situated, Dumperoo comes out from under the sewing room bed to eat, drink , and roam through the house all night.
Thank you for stopping by.
Love,
Henny
