Chocolate Review Megapost: Gnaw Peanut Butter, Deluxe Banana Milk Chocolates & More!

A massive thank you to the wonderful +BringBack Banjo who recently sent me a massive box full of delicious chocolates and treats. Running the Bring Back Banjo Chocolate Bar takes a lot of time of effort but somehow BBBC manages to also keep her eye on spotting interesting new products. I always love her selections and this time was no different!

Inside the parcel I found an awesome banana spread called I'm Bananas from The Wild Peanut, a Gnaw Peanut Butter chocolate, Snyder's Pretzel Pieces in Honey Mustard & Onion, a Twix Cappuccino, Chewits, Oh So Good Chocolate (no added sugar or dairy and with a boost of friendly bacteria), Tago Chocolate Muse (from Poland), Deluxe Banana Coated in Milk Chocolate, and Maui & Sons Dark Chocolate Coconut Chips.

Maui & Sons Dark Chocolate Coated Coconut Chips: Even though I love coconut, this isn't the sort of product I would usually go for. I think I would assume that the flavour would be a bit dry and boring, but I was happy to find that that's not the case!

Each dark chocolate coconut chip has a lovely crunchy texture that gives them an almost caramelised taste. The dark chocolate coating is really sweet but still has a strong chocolate flavour. Of course, the best part is the coconut flavour that comes through with each crunchy mouthful - it's sweet and just delicious. Even my kids couldn't get enough of this snack and they don't usually like coconut. I would definitely buy these in the future. Rating: 9 out of 10.

GNAW Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate: Gnaw is a range of handcrafted chocolates made in Norfolk. I love just how extensive the range is in terms of different flavours. As a fan of peanut butter I was excited to give this particular one a try.

The Gnaw Peanut Butter is described as a milk chocolate with ground and chopped peanuts. There isn't any peanut butter as such in this bar, just little pieces of peanuts. The milk chocolate itself is very tasty, with a creamy flavour, but the little peanut pieces just provide a salty, peanut flavour rather than a 'peanut butter' one. It's still a tasty enough chocolate bar, especially for any peanut fans. Rating: 7 out of 10.

Lidl Deluxe Banana Coated in Milk Chocolate: I've often been tempted by the range of chocolate covered fruits in Lidl (such as the Deluxe Cherries Coated in Dark Chocolate) but I've never tried them before. I don't think I've ever seen this banana version or I would have snapped them up!

I'll be honest, I was quite shocked that these chunky chocolates were so dark inside - I was expecting a yellow coloured centre! Thankfully, the flavour is much tastier than I was expecting from appearances. The centre has a softly chewy texture and the whole thing has a deliciously sweet and ripe banana flavour. I really did enjoy these! They taste quite rich and satisfying, and the chocolate is very sweet, so I only eat one or two at a time, but I'll still be stocking up if I ever see these instore. Rating: 8 out of 10.

If you've tried any of the snacks in this post (or any of the products in the first photo) then I'd love to hear from you in the comments below. Look out for the rest of the reviews from this parcel soon.

Another big THANK YOU to the wonderful @BringBack_Banjo

New Instore: Pyjamas at Primark - Reese's Peanut Butter & Pringles!

Not quite an official grocery gem but I couldn't resist posting this fun lounge wear from Primark. So far I've spotted Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and Pringles styles. I was almost tempted by the Reese's ones!

Reese's Peanut Butter Cup pyjamas at Primark - T-shirt £5.00p and Bottoms £8.00p.

The Pringles design is not quite as cute as the Reese's, but I do prefer the longer sleeves. Besides, who wouldn't want to sit around eating Pringles whilst also looking like a Pringle?

Review: Magnum Double Peanut Butter

As a peanut butter fan I was happy to find that the Magnum Double Peanut Butter has finally been released in the UK. It's a gorgeous sounding offering of peanut butter flavoured ice cream with a chocolate flavour coating and peanut butter sauce.

The first thing I noticed is just how small this new Magnum ice cream is. Unilever announced earlier this year that all it's British ice cream brands (Magnum, Cornetto, Feast) would be reduced in size by up to a third, to bring them under a 250 calories limit, and it's made a noticeable difference to the Magnum Double.

It doesn't feel all that much bigger than a Mini Magnum but I'll have to buy a pack of those to do a proper size comparison. In terms of numbers a Magnum Classic is now 110ml, this Magnum Double Peanut Butter is 88ml, whilst a Magnum Mini is 60ml.

Inside, the Magnum Double Peanut Butter consists of twin layers of chocolate filled with a peanut butter 'sauce' It doesn't have the consistency of a peanut butter but instead is more like a smooth caramel. I would have preferred the texture to be thicker and more peanut butter-like. The flavour itself is nicely nutty but is much sweeter than a peanut butter and without the salty edge. The inner ice cream is super creamy, with a sweet peanut flavour that works well with the rich outer chocolate. Overall, The Magnum Double Peanut Butter is not exactly what I was expecting in terms of having a full-on peanut butter flavour. It's more of a chocolate & peanut offering but it's still an enjoyable and tasty ice cream.

Reader Review: Cornetto Peanut Butter Love

Welcome to the first ever reader review on Grocery Gems! Today's review is courtesy of Aaron R. who has sent me some great photos in the past. He spotted the new Cornetto Peanut Butter Love Ice Cream Cones in Asda and shared his photos and thoughts of this fab find. Over to Aaron R...

I love peanut butter products (but surprisingly I don't actually like or buy actual Peanut Butter Spread!.. EVER!). However, I do enjoy the array of Reese's Peanut Butter items that have popped up in the UK over the last few years so when I saw this new product by Cornetto I had to give it a try!

On first glance at the actual Cornetto itself, I wasn't surprised by the small size (most Cornetto lovers would be in agreement that the size has diminished to what they once were way back when!).

The top layer of the actual Cornetto was great, the chocolate was thick and the crunch was lovely, really enjoyable and tasty. The actual ice cream itself was creamy but also had those slight bitter taste notes that come with Peanut Butter products.

Underneath the ice cream was a lovely caramel flavoured sauce mixed in with the ice cream, that was actually just under half of the actual wafer... no complaints about this part of this treat! And Cornetto still has that faithful chocolate block at the end of the wafer!

All in all, a great ice cream treat that breaks away from the norm regarding Cornetto flavours - nice to see them branching out!

Grocery Gems Reader Review (Aaron R): Cornetto Peanut Butter Love

RATING8 out of 10 only thing letting it down really was the size, taste though was great!
Buy them again?: Yes.
Purchased: Asda.
Price: £1.86p for a box of 4.

Thanks so much to Aaron for the great review. I really need to find the Cornetto Peanut Butter Love myself now! Looking at the Asda website they also have two other new Cornetto varieties; Cornetto Caramel and Cornetto Cookies 'n' Dream Ice Cream Cones. If you've tried any of those then I'd love to hear from you in the comments below.

Review: Krispy Kreme Reese's Peanut Butter Doughnut

It was only a few weeks ago that Krispy Kreme teamed up with a popular spread, Lotus Biscoff, to release the Caramelised Biscoff doughnut. This time Krispy Kreme has joined one of the most iconic peanut butter brands to create the Reese's Peanut Butter Doughnut. It's a chocolate iced doughnut, filled with Reese's peanut butter, and topped with hazelnuts and extra Reese's peanut butter drops.

I was pleased to find that the filling in the Krispy Kreme Reese's doughnut is pure peanut butter, rather than a "kreme infused with peanut butter" (which makes it different to the peanut butter doughnut that is usually available at Krispy Kreme). Not only that, but this peanut butter is recognisably Reese's - with an extra salty and sweet peanut flavour. The Reese's peanut butter chips on top are not easy to find in the UK so it's great to see them included on this doughnut - each one adds an extra kick of peanut butter goodness. I don't usually like the chocolate icing that Krispy Kreme uses, but here the chocolate icing, and the dark chocolate drizzle, provides a welcome sweetness to soften the strong peanut butter flavour. Chocolate and peanut butter is always a winning combination in my opinion and it certainly works perfectly in these doughnuts.

I didn't think these Krispy Kreme Reese's Peanut Butter Doughnuts could overtake the recent Lotus Caramelised Biscoff doughnuts as my favourites, but I think the stronger flavoured filling just edges it for me.

Have you tried the new Krispy Kreme Reese's Peanut Butter doughnut yet? I'd love to know what you thought of it. Also, if anyone spots these available in the Tesco Krispy Kreme stands then let me know in the comments below - thanks!

Limited Edition M&M's Brazil World Cup (UK)

If you read my rather scathing review of the Limited Edition Kit Kat Chunky Orange last week (here), then you might expect a similar review for these Limited Edition Brazil themed M&M's. After all, the only thing that is different about them is the colour. The flavour is certainly nothing new, just good ol' peanut. But despite all that, I really like these colourful blue, green and yellow M&M's!

The thing is I'm obsessed with flags (I have so many books about flags, posters, maps - even a flag globe on my Around the World page) so these type of flag themed products always appeal to me. I gave the London Olympics themed M&M's a big thumbs up back in 2012 too for the same reasons (review here - but be warned it's in the early days of my blog so it's pretty awful!). The supermarkets are full of party supplies featuring the Brazilian flag for the football World Cup and it's nice to have a chocolate product that fits in with this party atmosphere. I can imagine having bowls of these M&M's at any World Cup get together or even for watching a match on your own, and they will look great. I don't even mind that they are not a special flavour because that's not the point. It's all about the flag, the Bandeira do Brasil, and I think that's fabulous. If anything, I wish these were plain chocolate M&M's rather than peanut ones because they would appeal to more members of my family (i.e. my kids don't like the peanut ones!).

Let me know if you agree or disagree in the comments below!

Grocery Gems Verdict: M&M's Brazil Colours

Review: Reese's Crispy Crunchy

Peanut butter fans - this one is for you. I thought I had tried just about every Reese's peanut butter confection available but turns out I was wrong and somehow this Crispy Crunchy had managed to pass me by. Thank you to the lovely people at Monster Sweets who recently sent me this American chocolate bar bar to try out.

It's described as a crispy treat made with chocolate, Reese's peanut butter, peanut butter candy and peanuts. Sounds like a veritable peanut overload!

The centre is made up of layered of crispy peanut brittle, this is surrounded by a thin layer of creamy peanut butter, and the whole thing is wrapped up in a thick layer of chocolate embedded with peanuts. As it's name would suggest there are lots of different textures going on here. The crunch from the outer peanut pieces, creamy smoothness from the outer chocolate, and lots of crispy-then-turns-chewy from the inner layers.

I enjoyed the full on peanut butter flavour here too, there is a lovely sweet and salty nature to this bar that is always a winner with me. However, I did find the inner peanut brittle layer a bit too sweet and it seemed determined to get stuck in my teeth! The chocolate itself was fine, creamy and of course very sweet, but still provides a decent background for the peanut butter flavour. Overall, the Reese's Crispy Crunch is definitely worth a try if you're in need to satisfy a sugary craving and it's certainly one I would try again.

Japanese Snacks Review! Umaibo, Morinaga Choco Balls & Mitsuya Cider Candy

As a fan of Japanese confections I often get serious snack envy when I hear about the products available there. I'd especially love to visit the world's first Kit Kat Speciality Shop, called the Kit Kat Chocolatory, which recently opened in Tokyo! Maybe one day, but in the meantime here's a round up of a few more fabulous Japanese snacks which I've been trying lately, all easily available through the wonderful Oyatsu Cafe - they get new products all the time so it's worth checking out their front page regularly.

Umaibo

Like these Umaibo snacks for example. These popular snacks feature a mascot called Umaemon and come in a variety of flavours. The actual snack is a large cylindrical puffed corn snack (imagine a huge individual Wotsit - except far tastier!), with a flavoured seasoning on top.

I tried out two flavours Umaibo Tonsako (fried pork) and Umaibo Cheese and they were both completely delicious. The Tonsako flavour is meaty but is sweet and sour at the same time, and have a salty hint of soy sauce. It's a fully rounded flavour that beats any puffed corn snack I've tried before hands down. The Cheese flavour is also more complex then a simple cheese corn puff, there is some added sweetness here too that is balanced out by a subtle tangy background flavour. 8 out of 10.

Morinaga Choco Balls

These Morinaga Choco Balls are described as peanuts covered in a crispy cookie layer and coated with chocolate.

The chocolate coating is ridiculously glossy and gives these a gorgeous appearance.

Each one has a whole crunchy peanut inside. The biscuity layer surrounding the peanut seemed to me more of a wafer consistency rather than a cookie. It gives the Choco Balls an extra crunch and more interesting than a regular chocolate covered peanut. The chocolate itself has quite a dark cocoa flavour and adds a sweetness to these delectable Choco Balls. 9 out of 10.

Mitsuya Cider Candy

Mitsuya Cider is a popular soda drink in Japan that has been around since 1884. Despite the word "cider" this drink is not actually made with cider. Instead, the Mitsuya Cider is a non-alcoholic drink that comes in many flavoured varieties.

These candies based on the drink have a fizzy outer layer to replicate the soda drink itself. I tried out two flavours, the White Mitsuya Cider Candy and the Mitsuya Cider Lemon Candy. The White Mitsuya was my favourite of the two, it was much sweeter than I was expecting, with a subtle bubblegum flavour. The fizzyness gives it a sherbet edge and makes these surprisingly moreish! The lemon candies have a fairly strong zesty flavour and are more tart overall - perfect for lovers of sour sweets. (9 out of 10).

Quick Review: Sunpat Crunchy Hazelnut Spread

I picked up this Sun-Pat Crunchy Hazelnut Spread yesterday in Sainsbury's. As soon as I saw it I was hooked by the idea of a hazelnut spread - it conjured up the image of a chocolate-less Nutella! Obviously that is not the case here, since this Sun-Pat Crunchy Hazelnut Spread has the minuscule word peanut just before the word Spread. Didn't catch that? It's PEANUT. On the back of the jar it's actually called a Peanut & Hazelnut Spread, with roasted peanuts making up 62% of the ingredients and hazelnuts only 12%. I was in quite a rush when I picked up the jar so perhaps I should have stopped to read the label properly - especially the back!

Once I got home and realised that this is basically a peanut butter with 12% added hazelnuts I lost the initial excitement I felt about reviewing this, so excuse the lack of photos. The spread itself is nice enough. It's a very crunchy peanut butter. The nut pieces seemed to be larger that usual, giving it a much crunchier consistency. The flavour comes mainly from the peanuts, and at first it tasted like any other peanut butter. However, I could certainly taste the hazelnuts as the secondary flavour and they added an extra creaminess to the peanut butter.

Sun-Pat seem to be releasing some very unusual products lately. Firstly the Choc-a-Nut peanut spread that contained cocoa powder rather than any chocolate, and now a Hazelnut Spread that is mostly peanut.

Review: Oreo Peanut Butter Wafers (China)

Many thanks to the wonderful @Banjo_Chocolate, who recently sent me a brilliant selection of hard to find chocolates and snacks. She's simply the best at awesome finds! Take these Oreo wafers from China for example. They're such an unusual product, which I've never seen before, but it's exactly the type of product I would snap up if I did spot it! It was also featured on the recent Choc It Out youtube video of best foreign chocolate bars of 2013 (linky).

There are some really unique products under the Oreo brand in China. Check out this fab round up on Kotaku here.

This peanut butter Oreo wafer is very crumbly in texture (making it quite messy to eat!), with a creamy peanut filling between two wafers. The wafer has that same sweet chocolately flavour as the more famous Oreo cookie, but just in a lighter wafer format. The peanut butter filling consists of a fairly thin layer, but it still manages to pack a punch in flavour. As soon as I unwrapped the wafer the peanut scent was immediately evident. It adds a lovely sweet, and slightly salty, flavour to the wafers. Definitely worth a try if you can track one down!

Please don't forget that @Banjo_Chocolate is running a campaign to get Mars to Bring Back the Banjo chocolate bar. Public support has worked for other discontinued products in the past, including Funny Feet Ice Cream which were re-released recently, so every bit of support is very much appreciated!

Review: Tohato Caramel Corn

These cute red bags of Caramel Corn have long been high on my list of Japanese products to try. I love the bright packaging but have always been curious about a cheese puff looking snack with a sweet sounding name like Caramel Corn. It turns out that these are indeed a sweet version of a corn snack, something I've never come across before, but with an unexpected added peanut twist (although the little peanut character on the packaging should have been enough of a clue!).

These were very kindly sent to me by Oyatsu Cafe, my favourite online store for Japanese snacks and treats. Use the coupon GROCERYGEMS for 15% discount off any Oyatsu Cafe order.

In appearance and texture these are exactly the same as the common puffed corn snacks which are usually cheesy flavoured. It's slightly odd at first that these smell quite sweet, but the delicious flavour quickly won me over. They taste similar to a caramel popcorn, but with an easier to eat texture, that is lightly crunchy.

There is also a background peanut flavour to these, and even some added real peanuts too, most of which were lurking at the bottom of the bag. Overall the caramel and peanut was very tasty and quite an unusual combination in a snack of this kind.

Find them online at Oyatsu Cafe.

Review: Peanut Hottie - a Peanut Butter Hot Drink!

Peanut butter as a flavour has become something of a phenomenon in the UK in recent times, there's not many food products that it hasn't been added to from biscuits to ice cream. But one version of peanut butter I hadn't expected to see, is a peanut butter hot drink! Still, it sounds like a brilliant idea to me and luckily the lovely people at Peanut Hottie sent me a jar to try.

This instant hot beverage is made in the UK using American peanuts, and contains no artificial additives or colours, is caffeine free, and is suitable for vegetarians - plus it has only 83 calories per cup.

As soon as I opened up the jar I knew I was in for a real peanut buttery treat! The scent is immediately of a rich peanut butter, and I couldn't wait to experience how this would taste as a hot beverage.

The instructions suggest using 4-5 lovingly heaped teaspoons per mug - or even more depending on the peanut butter craving - and then simply adding boiled water. I added four teaspoons at first, but then added a couple more for extra intensity. I wasn't sure what to expect from the Peanut Hottie, but I really did enjoy this drink. It's very sweet, with an almost caramel flavour at first, which then builds to a smooth peanut flavour. Even though I made mine with water it still has a creamy and satisfying taste. I've been mostly enjoying Peanut Hottie as an evening drink, but the sweetness means it also works perfectly as an afternoon pick-me-up.

The jar states, "you'll wonder how you ever managed without me", and I would completely agree with that sentiment - I'm hooked!

UPDATE - Just made this drink using half hot chocolate powder and half Peanut Hottie = heaven!

Review: Marks & Spencer Peanut Butter Heaven Dessert

It's taken me a while to find this Peanut Butter Heaven dessert after visiting quite a few branches of M&S (I eventually found it in their Westfield Stratford store), but it's probably no surprise that it was absolutely worth the wait.

There are two elegant looking Peanut Butter Heaven desserts in each pack. They consist of a main layer of peanut butter mousse, with further layers of caramel sauce, shortbread biscuit crumb, and dark chocolate ganache topped with marbled chocolate curls.

Each dessert is quite generously sized, but so completely delicious that I could have easily eaten both pots by myself. The peanut butter mousse layer in particularly is just divine; creamy, with a lightly whipped texture and full of peanut butter flavour. This is combined with a richly flavoured dulce de leche type caramel sauce underneath. At the very bottom is a layer of crumbed shortbread biscuits, providing some lovely crumbly texture against all the other completely smooth layers. The dark chocolate ganache topping was surprisingly bitter, but it did give a welcome contrast to the very sweet layers beneath. I would have preferred a bit of extra peanut butter flavour in this chocolate ganache, that would have really take this dessert into the realms of peanut butter "heaven" for me, but perhaps I'm just being a bit greedy!

Overall this is a fantastic dessert from M&S, and one that I would buy again without hesitation.

Review: Sun-Pat Choc-a-Nut Peanut Spread

Even though I enjoy chocolate spreads and peanut butter, my husband is even more of a fan than I am. He's always on the lookout for any new product and has found some real gems over the years (I still miss the Coconut Chocolate Spread that Sainsbury's used to sell!). I had actually read about this new Sun-Pat Choc-a-Nut peanut spread on Kev's Snack Review blog but hadn't seen it instore anywhere, so I was more than happy when the other half found a jar recently.

It certainly sounds like a great idea, albeit a very simple one - to create a combination of chocolate spread and butter butter in one jar. The reality of this Sun-Pat spread does not actually equate to that promising combination, but it's a very tasty proposition in it's own right. Instead, this is a mix of smooth peanut spread with cocoa powder, rather than chocolate, which meant it had a deeper, darker flavour than I was expecting. Even though I've pictured this spread on a toasting waffle, I wouldn't recommend it eaten this way, it just didn't work well at all, and seemed to bring out a bitter flavour from the Choc-a-Nut spread. On a piece of toast, or bagel, however it is completely delicious! The result is not too sweet or greasy, with the rich cocoa flavour creating a very different type of spread.

KP Snackers Salted and Spicy Chilli Review

These Snackers from KP have been available for a few months now and are currently on a buy one get one free offer at Tesco. They're a simple, but very satisfying, mix of potato snacks and jumbo peanuts. There are three flavours available; Salted, Spicy Chilli and Salt & Vinegar.

The Salted variety is described as a mix of salted jumbo peanuts, Hula Hoops, mini tortilla chips, and crunchy corn strips. It's basically like having a couple of packets of crisps and a bag of nuts on the go at the same time but all conveniently placed in one bag!

There is a decent distribution of all the various ingredients, including the jumbo peanuts. The flavour is simply salted and extremely enjoyable because of all the different types of snack within. The mix of tortillas and potato chips works very well with the peanuts and creates a fun snacking combo. I think these would be great for serving as a party snack.

The Spicy Chilli is described as a mix of spicy chilli flavour jumbo peanuts, crunchy corn strips, mini tortilla chips and multigrain crispy bites. The elements are all similar to the Salted mix, but with the wavy multigrain chips instead of Hula Hoops.

The flavour of these is more varied than the Salted version, with each type of snack having a different level of chilli. The mini tortillas have quite a light and sweeter chilli flavour whilst the jumbo peanuts are quite strongly flavoured with a spicy chilli. The overall chilli flavour has a slight kick to it, and builds with intensity but is still fairly mild and enjoyable for the whole family. Another great snack mix that I would definitely buy again.
