Why, When and How World-Known Brands Redesign Their Logos

Written by: Brian Jens

The redesign is an inevitable process for any company, regardless of its scale. In fact, no one in this world can create absolutely timeless corporate identity. Even the strongest brands redesign themselves from time to time to remain relevancy and be in demand. As a business founder, you have to strive to create timeless corporate identity although sooner or later, it will lose its power.

As an employee of DesignContest, I constantly meet with entrepreneurs and business owners. All of them do care about logo design, but only a few know (in more or less degree) the kind of a logo they need.

In the paper, I’m going to consider the way famous world brands redesigned their logos. I hope my thoughts and remarks will help you to better understand the factors to rely on when implementing a redesign.

Running beforehand, I would admit simplification as the main redesign trend. It’s necessary to correctly display the logos on mobile devices, as well as to change the positioning of a brand in order not to look awkward: enjoy the funniest logos by clicking on this url. The companies think far from just about their logos – they try to build perfect UX and the most convenient system for interaction with a user.

Facebook

Facebook changed its logo at the end of July 2015. The changes may seem insignificant, but the company has completely changed the graphic style.

Josh Higgins, a creative director of the social network, stated that the new logo is adapted to mobile devices. Every day, Facebook is visited by more than 900 million people, so this restyling is quite natural.

Oculus

The company has become a part of Facebook and totally changed the logo. The new one, in fact, reflects the essence of the product: two lenses in Oculus Rift creates an oval. According to designers, it’s a symbol of future, in which an Oculus Rift user is transferred.

MINI

An automobile company has changed the appearance of its logo by making it extremely minimalist. The new logo is designed in Flat style. However, it remained all key elements. According to the Berlin KKLD Agency, the new logo is fully consistent with the company's philosophy.

Google

Google has introduced its new logo on 1 September 2015.

In fact, it’s the same six letters in old color, but in a different graphic style. This was the first change in the style of the logo since 2014 and the first radical one since 1999.

The company’s desire to change the logo was announced after the appearance of news about the establishment of the Alphabet holding: the "G" letter was shown in an unusual style, without sans serif at the edges. It became clear that the logo would be updated from day to day.

The changes did not take long. On the first day of autumn, the company introduced a modified logo: the letters become without serifs and the font got changed.

The innovation may seem insignificant, but, in fact, the logo has been updated considerably. The company's official comment says that it is not just about changing the style but the question of new positioning: Google has positioned itself not only as the leading search engine but as a huge platform, consisting of a variety of websites and services. People are using Google products from different platforms, applications, and devices. Presented logo was a symbol of a new reality.
Google’s old logo was perfect for use in a browser on a PC, but the company is no more just a search engine issuing links. Google’s services are presented on a variety of device, from cars and watches to tablets and smartphones. Therefore, the logo was updated to look equally good/clear/concise everywhere.
New Google’s identity not only goes towards topical aesthetic and technical requirements but also testifies the growing ambitions of the corporation. From a functional point of view, the new logo is fully consistent with the latest trends. It’s scalable and looks amazing on the smallest screens of smartphones and smart watches. For very extreme cases, a colorful title "G" letter appears.
For now, there are a few abridged versions of the company’s logo:

  1. A lowercase "g" was replaced by "G" painted in traditional colors (blue, red, yellow, and green).
  2. These four points are represented by the same color as the microphone appears when using Google voice

Lenovo

The logo was changed in July 2015 by Saatchi & Saatchi New York agency. It is now written in white letters of a new font. This was made to make possible using the background of any color. At the moment, it’s red. I guess red color was chosen due to its property to attract attention: red is the strongest color in the palette.
By the way, you must study color psychology before starting redesign.

Logitech

Logitech is a world-known manufacturer of devices for PCs and game consoles. The new simplified logo indicates a desire to match the spirit of the time.

As in previous cases, an updated version looks equally good on both the company’s products and the network.

Featured Blogspot Graphic Design: THE PUNGEONING

THE PUNGEONING is about Art, Graphic Design, Cultural Criticism, and Psy-Ops.

Designers are seeking inspiration in different kind of ways. Does it always have to be visual experiencing? When you see something unique or when you find an unusual creation then you react to see what you can do about it? What if the inspiration comes from what I call: “Cultural Criticism”.

Lordsomber is the author of THE PUNGEONING . It is a blog, a story telling of your surroundings, a beautifully poetic depiction of cultural criticism into graphic and a journey of moving souls.

Well this designer artist has all the answers in an interesting interview.

Lordsomber, could you first introduce yourself?

Salutations. I am Lordsomber, silent fly on the wall, amnesiac from the future, the sizzle in the brain pan.

Featured Blogspot Graphic Design: THE PUNGEONING

Cultural criticism is your interest for most of the time. Why?

It is a way to observe today’s thought patterns and behaviours in the context of underlying psychohistorical memes, attitudes and actions. The blinders people wear are more often put on by themselves. Pungeoning is about holding up the Mirror of Reality to Man’s Folly.

Featured Blogspot Graphic Design: THE PUNGEONING

You describe yourself as an artist of many talents. Could you tell me what style of art that represents your talents?

Whereas many pieces and vignettes may have dreamy, surreal or abstract qualities, I leave particular labels up to the viewer and critic.

Featured Blogspot Graphic Design: THE PUNGEONING

The Pungeoning, started the post début in 2005. Is it so much about your journey?

It is as much an archive as current journal or gallery. Some entries are 15 minutes old, some are 15 years old.

Featured Blogspot Graphic Design: THE PUNGEONING

What are the essential concerns to create your design?

The gist is often buried under layers and curves of context and meaning, like peeling and onion or meandering along a Möbius strip. The core or resolution is often not revealed to even me until a piece is finished.

Featured Blogspot Graphic Design: THE PUNGEONING

Does music bring inspirational sense to your graphic design?

Indirectly. Lighting is used as a movie might use a soundtrack to set mood or tone. This may be either central or incidental to any given piece.

Anything else you would like to say to the readers?

Commentary, interpretation and criticism are welcome and appreciated.

Last sticky question to my entire interviewed artist: What is a good art or graphic design supposed to be?

Good graphic design comes down to clear communication, which is just the opposite of my arcane, esoteric pontifications ;)
...hence, should these ponderings not fall under the ill-defined category of just “art”? As for what is “good art,” I leave that can of worms to braver souls.

Terrific idea is somehow a result of pondering attitude towards what we catch a glimpse of, as THE PUNGEON does. Thank you for Lordsomber who shares his life journey’s viewpoints in this week Blogspot Featured Graphic Design.

Lordsomber profiles:

How do you seek your own idea to develop your design concept? Do you experiencing an art as profound as Lordsomber?

My Design is Beautifully Ripped Off

I was shocked knowing that one of my Photoshop freebies being hijacked by some other Bloggers for their own benefit. Since this was my first experience, I’m getting intense to find out how to prevent this issue.

You can tell how your work of art becomes popular using site tracker tool. As I’ve been checking my stat regularly, I found that, one of my Photoshop freebies gets good attention from some reader segment. I used “Round Corner Photoshop Brushes” as anchor text for every link related and image alt. I didn’t mean to search down for hijacking items on my design. I went to Google to find out how my blog post rank result in “Round Corner Photoshop Brushes” keywords. Sadly but true, I found 5 sites doing copyright violation on my design. They simply erased my watermark tagline on the preview image, and replaced it with their own logo, as if they have created it by themselves. No link back or attribution definitely, and they provide re-self-hosted link to download the file.

Carefully compare these two image snapshots! The image below is originally designed by me, and at the next one is thief’s handmade craft upon my original design.

I protect all of my designs under CC license ,

but I wasn’t sure how it would work effectively since my country (Indonesia) is not available in license governed by the Copyright Law of a specific jurisdiction.

Creative Commons License

This annoying experience could happen to anyone…to designers who blog, blog journalists, or blog researchers. Anyone who stole your valuable contents should not deserve the time and effort that you spent in such easy way

Bhizwiz wrote a very useful article: Prevent Content Theft and Copyright Infringement

It contains brief explanation of steps to take when your contents are stolen.

But I still feel such a dilemma on this matter. Would those thieves coming back with another form of attack if I’m willing to take those steps?

I remember how Bittbox , clearly stated licenses and usage when presenting its early design freebies series. I quoted this from its nice article freebies: Free Vector Glass Header Designs – Fancy

“I would like to clear up a little confusion with this post: These Files are FREE. Some of you were confused because I stated that “You may, under no circumstance, redistribute these files” (I already removed this statement, as well as the readme file in all of my downloads). What I meant by that is: You may not rehost my original zip file on your own site, and offer my files as a download, as if you created the files yourself, that’s all. Every single file I offer is completely and utterly free. You may use them however you see fit. Use them as is, modify them, put them in your new software app. Hell, use them as part of a logo! I don’t care, as long as you don’t re-gift them. I’m tired of an Ugly internet, so I decided to flood it as best as I can on my spare time, with some good shit. I hope that clears things up. And thank All of you for the kind reviews and comments, your feedback is priceless to me. Cheers ~BittBox.”

Just for a good reference that I want to point out, I like how BittBox presents its Free Design Resources based on specific License and Usage

Freebies download can attract much reader, but….most of the time, this is quite tricky and needs extra handling.

If you are a BlogCatalog user, you can enter a discussion about this violation which I started previously...your feedback will help me a lot…and lots of Bloggers who experienced the same thing. Help us stop this problem to role again next time ahead.

Valey and 3D Digital Art Work as His Journey

Curently has a very good career as a 3D Computer Graphic Illustrator in Bali,
The company where he works now, deals primarily with interior designing. This is a very challenging job to Valey, since his company's clients came from different country abroad. So he must find a creative ideas as good as he could, to implement his art work to meet with the client's initial design. It's not that hard for Valey to finish his job, because somehow I found out later that his father is actually a painting artist. The sense of art, runs in his blood. His talent is surely no doubt at all.

Other things that he does now day, is creating 3D objects and post them in his online gallery. I follow his designing process in creating this 3D CAR object. He applied some "tribal" shape to put on his car's body, and made several alternatives. He stopped by for a while to ask my opinion, and I said: "Well, anything will look good on your d'sign Valey :D Hell Ya it will takes another year to make the same d'sign if I were you..." .
