Some Old Patterns, Some New Patterns

I'm still doing donation quilts but just haven't posted any for a while.

Two more quilts made with fruits and vegetables.
I mentioned before that fat quarters multiply in the cupboard because I still have more of these fabrics and will probably make more food quilts in the future.

I was looking for something in one of my storage towers and came across these flying geese blocks.  I don't know what I was saving them for so I sorted them because there were two different sizes and added a few more and made two quilts.
The binding is stripped fabric and since I didn't have enough for both, one of the quilts has pieced binding.  Click on the picture to see the different colours.

Amsterdam Quilt

I found the pattern here.  I thought it was very bright and springy.

Shoo Fly Block and 16 patch block using 2 inch squares.

I save 2 inch squares and put them together to make a 6 1/2 inch square.  This way you can pair them up with any 6 1/2 inch block and make a quilt.

I used the same idea as above but used 6 1/2 inch squares of map fabric and then put the same fabric as the border.

I find a lot of ideas on the internet especially the website: www.allpeoplequilt.com

Square Deal Quilt

This is from http://www.americanquilter.com/.  If you join their newsletter you get lots of free patterns.  I added borders to make it 36 x 48 inches which is a wheelchair size quilt.

I made this pattern before but never with just three colours.  The last time I made it scrappy.

Large heart

This pattern is on Craftsy website and it is also a Project Linus Pattern.

More Quilts

I haven't blogged for a while because my laptop needs a new hard drive and I might as well buy a new one for the price they quoted me.  Now I am using an old netbook so I hope I don't have any problems with it.

A Scrap Quilt with a sixteen patch made from 2 inch squares.

I made it smaller than the original pattern by using 2 inch squares as the peas instead of 3 inch squares, and then also adjusted the sides of the pods.

This is my own pattern but it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to.  I have since adjusted the pattern and made another one so it is better.  I am sure that fat quarters multiply while they sit in your stash.

Whirligigs and Pinwheels

This is a quilt that I made for my great-niece for her first baby.  I found the fabric when I was on the July shop hop in Southern Ontario this past summer.

Half square triangles in a chevron pattern

Churn Dash

A Churn dash quilt made with 2 inch and 2 1/2 inch square from a book called "I love Churn Dash Quilts"

More Scrap Quilts

It has been a while since I blogged but things have been busy around here.  My brother has been ill so my thoughts have been with him.  He passed away after a quadruple bypass that he had before Christmas.  It was a tough recovery and took it's toll on his body.

I have been making more scrap quilts to keep my hands and thoughts busy.  One good thing about our craft is that you can immerse yourself in it.

Christmas Quilt

This quilt was fun to make until I realized that I made the flying geese 3 x 6 instead of 4 x 8 so I had to make a lot more squares than what the quilt called for.

My Neighbourhood

I have made this quilt before and really like it so I made it again.  That is something that I rarely do.  I usually just make a quilt pattern once unless I really like the pattern then I duplicate it.  Some of my houses are really colourful just like what you would find in any neighbourhood.

A Runners Quilt

A couple of years ago a friend of mine made a quilt out of this material for her daughter who runs marathons.  She had some leftovers from the backing and figured that she wouldn't use it again so I took it and made a scrap donation quilt out of it.

From Scraps to Scrappy

Working on scrap quilts keeps me busy.  I love to find new patterns and then sort through the scrap bins to come up with a quilt.  Sometimes I have to cut the pattern down to a size that I like working with so I have to choose patterns that I can do that too.  I like them to fit onto one piece of fabric for the backing and the usually size turns out to be 38-40 x 48-52 inches.  The size that will fit onto a wheelchair or a small lap quilt.

This quilt used up some of my 2 1/2 inch squares as well as some of my 5 inch squares to make the 4 1/2 inch half square triangles.  Check out Moda Bakeshop for more scrap quilts.  I think I have said this before, but as soon as I see the pattern using a charm pack I think of scraps.  I may have to make this one again, really like how it turned out.

Dog Lovers Quilt

I had this dog fabric that I hated to cut up so by making it into large squares I was able to use it without losing some of the doggy faces.  I good quilt for Precious Bundles.  I hope a little boy gets this one.

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, No It's a UFO

I have been very busy getting my UFO's finished and having a fun time doing it.  It is so nice to see these quilts finally made.  My brain is still full with more quilts that I want to make but I still have 2 more to go to complete the challenge.

Windy Days

I found this quilt on Moda Bake shop.  I used a lot of leftover triangles and half-square triangles that I had saved from other projects.  Some of the larger squares are leftovers from borders from previous quilts.

Anita's Grecian Wrench

I found this quilt in a Quiltmaker magazine November/December 2014.  It is made with a template that you copy and place on 2 eight inch squares right sides together and sew on the dashed lines, then cut on the solid lines.  It was really neat because there is no squaring up to do on the half-square triangles.  I just had to cut off the dog ears.  Everything was exactly 3 1/2 inches.

Interwoven

This is another Moda Bake shop.  I pop in every so often and find lots of quilts that I can use some of my scraps in.  I just added white to all those .

Flying South.

I don't remember where I found this pattern.  It is made with 4 1/2 inch squares made into half-square triangles.  Most of the fabrics in this quilt were pieces left over from backings or quilts that I have made.  I also see a black and yellow fabric that I used to make a purse.

I did a zig-zag quilt motif to bring out the geese pattern.

Two more to go to complete my 10 UFO's.

Two More UFO's Finished

This UFO Challenge that the guild put out to it's members has been very good for me.  I am keeping focused and have completed 2 more.

Twisted Shamrock

I started this little wall hanging a few years ago by sewing the squares together but never got around to cutting out the twister squares.  I had borrowed a small twister from a friend and still didn't complete it.  I think the push came when the challenge was announced.  Glad to have it finished just in time for St Patrick's day.

Tiny Bits

I had gathered all the children fabrics together for this one and even cut out a few of the squares but put it aside to start something else.  The pattern came from a book that I got for Christmas called "Perfect Quilts For Pre-cut Fabrics".  As soon as I saw the tittle I immediately thought of scraps.  You were suppose to use charm squares but I fussy cut some of my fabrics to showcase them.

UFO Challenge

The Program Chairperson at our guild has put out a UFO Challenge.  This is something that suits me because I constantly seem to be thinking about making a new quilt when I already have a dozen or so partially started.  I see a pattern, like it, and then choose fabric and make at least one of the squares.  Then someone (daughter, sister, friend) asks me to make a baby quilt for them, so the quilt that was started is put aside and becomes a UFO.

I am trying desperately to keep focused and just work on my UFO's and it is working to some degree.  I have also finished 2 door hangings this week and 4 placemats.  No pictures of them yet.

Two of my finished UFO'S

Not Batik Patches

Anyone who follows this blog knows that I have hundreds of 2 1/2 inch squares, so when I found this pattern I had to change it to use up some of those squares.  The pattern is called Batik Patches but since I didn't use Batik I decided to rename it.  I found the pattern HERE

Sunny Chevron

I had made a quilt using 5 inch squares made into half square triangles and these are the leftovers (I made twice as may as I needed for the last quilt) plus a few more added to make the quilt 36 x 48.  When I found the pattern I thought it was ideal to use up some of my 5 inch scrap squares.  The pattern can be found at HERE

YKW cleaned the deck off for me so that I could take a few pictures.  Yesterday it snowed again and hit us with 20 cm. so it was a good thing I took the pictures when I did.

Busy with Scraps

Two more scrap quilts are finished.

This is called "Step in Time".

I made it with 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch strips.
The pattern is found here although the author used charm squares and I used scraps.  When ever I see a quilt made with charm packs I think scraps.

I called this one "Spinners"

I used 5 inch squares to make half square triangles and squared them up to 4 1/2 inches and then I sewed 4 of them together to make a larger square, then used the hinge method to sew them together.

With this method you quilt the squares first and then hinge them together with sashing strips on the top and bottom of the quilt.

Hexagons and More

I made one of these quilts last year and I cut the fabric for this quilt this past summer while I was at the cabin.  These are so neat because you cut half hexagons and match them up to make whole hexagons.

Hexagon Quilt.

I added half white hexagons along two sides and quarter hexagons on the other sides.  Then I decided that I needed a small border on 2 sides only.  I think it is about 38 x 49 inches.  It looks square but it isn't.  Lots of scraps where used in this quilt.

I found this quilt out in cyberspace at the Linus connection and thought that it would make a great scrap quilt, except that the squares were suppose to be 16 inches.  I divided the pieces in half and made 8 1/2 inch squares.  I had to make more squares but I had lots of scraps so it didn't matter.  This quilt is also on Craftsy.

I have been concentrating on lap quilts about 38 x 50 inches since these are easier for me to quilt.  I have made a few larger ones and since I now know how to use the hinge method I may make them a bit larger.  Dee's Brick Trick was made using the hinge method.  When using this method you can add the borders to your quilt after the quilt is made.  This is great when you finish the quilt and decide that it should be larger so you can add a few borders to accomplish this.

When I first thought I would make this quilt I chose forty-eight 5 inch squares because I needed forty-eight half square triangles.  After I had them all made I realized that I only needed 24 - 5 inch squares, so now I have another 48 half square triangles that I can use to make another quilt.  I will have to try something different for the next quilt.  I will have to study some patterns and come up with a different quilt.  I may have to add a few since there is a lot of white in this quilt.

There are so many ideas on Missouri Star Quilt Company if you ever have trouble trying to decide what to make all you have to do is look at a few of the videos.  When she talks charm squares I immediately think scraps.

From Scraps to Quilts

I love turning my scraps into quilts.  My family has all the quilts they can use and many placemats and table runners so I have been concentrating on Donation Quilts for our Guild.

A Nine Patch Quilt

This quilt was one of the ones that was in my daily quilt calendar.  It is a simple 9 patch with squares in between.  The squares are a map from Timeless Treasures Fabric.  It isn't really scraps but fabric that I got from a store that was going out of business.

Scrappy Bow Tie Block Quilt.

I found this block on the internet and thought it would make a great quilt to use up some of my 2 1/2 inch squares.  You can find the tutorial HERE.

Two Inch Squares

I have been cutting so many scraps lately I thought I should make something out of some of them.  I decided to use some 2 inch ones to make a donation quilt.  I used a 16 patch block so that I would use a lot of the squares and make a decent sized block.

There are 560 - 2 inch squares in this quilt.

I finished this quilt using the hinge method so that it was easier to quilt.
I still have about the same number of 2 inch squares in my bin.  I guess I will be making another one soon.  I think I will look for a different pattern or use a disappearing 16 patch.  That is a neat pattern.

I found this pretty butterfly fabric at "The Circle of Friends" quilt shop.
Cora's quilt needed a bag to go with it and I thought it was great since it has so much pink in it.  I put a tab across the top instead of a zipper and found a large pink button.

Scraps to Squares Part 2

I spent last week-end at the cabin with the bugs.  This year has been really bad for mosquitoes, black flies and no-see-ums.  They seem to really love me and always want a piece of me.

YKW was on his radio participating in "The flight of the Bumble Bees" so I took advantage of that and spent my time cutting up scraps into squares and hexagons.  I needed a 2 1/2 inch piece by 5 1/4 inches for my hexagons so I didn't make very many 2 1/2 inch squares.  I thought I might make another hexagon quilt and I need about 200 hexagons so I have been saving the strips to do this.

Anything less than 2 inches was not used and went into the real scrap bag.

Lots of different size squares.
5", 4 1/2", 4", 3 1/2", 3", 21/2", and 2".

I am really into scraps these days.

Half Hexagons.
The pile on the left has matching hexagons so that I can sew them together to make a full hexagon and the pile on the right has single ones and I may make a braid quilt out of them.
The squares were made from the leftover fabric that was not big enough to make a half hexagon.

From Scraps to Squares

I have been on a real scrap kick lately and making scrap quilts especially for donation quilts.  I have a wall of medium sized bins with scraps sorted by colour.
They are all labelled so that I can access them quickly.

I decided that I should go through them and see how big some of my scraps really are.  I found some that were all different sizes so I decided that maybe I should cut them into squares.  I thought that if they were in different size squares then I could plan on using them in some of my scrap quilts.  I found some smaller bins that were 6 x 8 inches so I used them to store the different sizes.  I have been very busy lately.

3 1/2 inch squares
These are a good size for making pinwheels.

2 inch squares are great for 9 patch and 16 patch squares

I decided on 3 inch squares because I didn't want to waste fabric if I cut larger pieces into 2 1/2 squares.

The 2 1/2 inch squares over flowed the small bins so I had to put them into a 6 x 8 inch bin.
I cut my bindings at 2 1/2 inches so I had an over abundance of that size strip.  I have already made a few quilts using this size square.

I also have a small bin with half hexagons.  I like making half hexagon or whole hexagon quilts.  They are a lot of fun to do.

The H Quilt and More Twister

I am having fun using up my scraps from my stash.  I have a lot for someone who has been quilting for only 5 and a half years.  I try to keep them sorted by colour but lately I have been sorting them by size also.  I have a small bucket with 2 1/2 inch squares and one with 2 inch squares.  If the piece of fabric won't make at least a 2 inch square then it goes in the pile for the dog beds, which are made by a group from our Guild.

The H Quilt.
This will be a donation quilt.

This quilt was suppose to be a puzzle quilt, but I thought that it would be too complicated adding the pieces for the puzzle.  I would have to lay out each piece individually and then add the extra colour, plus I didn't have enough of all of the colours to add the puzzle pieces.  It was easy to just add white to make an H.  Because the H's are turned there was very little matching to do, just the corners had to be matched.

Twister Illusions

I friend of mine created a monster when she taught me how to do the twister block.  This is a block that looks so complicated but is easy to do and it looks like you spent hours piecing small pieces together.
One of our local quilt shops was going out of business and I found the pattern one day while looking for bargains.  Most of the fabrics were in my stash but I had to purchase the blues and the black.  I have chosen a very special friend to get this quilt.

Twister Illusions
The pattern made a crib, twin or queen size quilt so I made this one a size between the crib and twin, by starting with the crib size and adding borders that were meant for the twin size.  I really like the corner detail.  Only 2 corners were suppose to have coloured squares but I added some to all four corners.  I really love this quilt.
YKW had just finished shovelling the latest snowfall off the deck so it was the perfect place to take the picture.  I prefer to take the pictures outside in the natural light if at all possible.
