As a child I believed two things. I believed that if I ran in the rain fast enough, the raindrops would not hit me, and that the raindrops fall to the ground to the beat of music. Whether you believe it or not, I forgot about it for two decades, until one rainy day I listened to the fourth instalment of GoodNetlabels Compilation… Moved by the music, and reminded of these two childhood memories, I came up with the title for the compilation, one that evokes the atmosphere of that innocent time.
So how do raindrops fall, then? Can we call it art? Reason dictates that they fall down as the wind allows them to fall, but perhaps such an adult perspective is not the best one here, and perhaps it is better to use our imagination the way the artists who contributed to this outstanding compilation did?

The first 2014 release at Export Label is ‘Dark Glow’, an album recorded by the Hungarian artist Niteffect. Budapest based Miklos Labady (Niteffect) has been a part of the underground scene since 2000; after numerous EPs, cooperations and guest appearances on compilations, he finally recorded a long play.
‘Dark Glow’ comprises nearly an hour of music, divided into twenty parts, characterised by the restlessness of trip-hop and abstract hip-hop. Last winter was exceptionally rich in interesting recordings and important premieres for Export Label. After Blossom’s debut album Blue Balloons which created quite a buzz, there was the premiere of ‘International Post-War Chill’ by Jacek Latoń, aka Cuefx. The latter is not only a nu-jazz album, it is also the most ambitious item in both the author’s and Export Label’s discographies. The abundance of experimental sounds and musical themes allow the listener to interpret and re-interpret the content of the album and of each individual track.

“Musically it’s all about jazz, ingeniously mixed with abstract hip-hop in a very illustrative way that brings to mind a film score. Echoes of New York experimental scene can be heard on this album; illbient, Laswell, DJ-a Spooky or The Blue Series, that actually connect the hip-hop and jazz scene, all seem to have inspired Cuefx as much as Scandinavian nu-jazz has.” That’s what Bartek Chaciński (Polityka) had to say about the album.

Nearly a year has passed since the release of the album. It is time for the next step: International Post War Chill Remixes. The most interesting takes on the original tracks have been selected in the course of a contest. “Who Wants A Bomb”, “25 Years Of True Love”, “Neurodramatic Hip Hop”, “International Post-War Chill” and “Re-Manhattan Blues” are among the remixed tracks. Export Label presents the newest release in the label’s catalogue – Expoet by Eufoteoria. It is the third album in the career of this Polish producer, who debuted at the beginning of 2011, immediately receiving recognition from the critics and following from the audience. It is with the audience in mind that we present this new album, Expoet.

The material consists of several compositions arranged on a ten-track album. The first track, entitled ‘Terapia’, was released six months ago as a part of GNs’ compilation Empty Shadows. Today this track, alongside other compositions and skits, contributes to the coherent sound of Expoet. Maed Meva - Figures

Export Label proudly presents an EP that is a result of a collaboration between a producer – Maed, and a turntablist - Meva. It is a mix of down tempo compositions and subtle scratching.
After a long break, Maed returns to his musical roots. Over the past few months he’s been preoccupied with his project Deam, where he’s been introducing his own vision of electronic club music to Polish audiences. But now, he’s decided to bring back what he’s best known for – instrumental hip – hop. His first record was released in 2008 by the 16 Verses Label. It was an album inspired by the likes of Madlib, Bonobo and Kero-One, all fused into an original vision of Maed. In this new release, one can hear how much has changed since the first record. Maed has grown, training himself in the post – hop – hop sounds of artists like Flying Lotus or Teebs.
Meva’s scratches are the perfect supplement for Maed’s beats. Meva has been scratching since 2006, when he put down his electric guitar and bought a pair of turntables. He is a veteran of scratch sessions, workshops and battles all around Poland. Meva hails from the new school generation of scratch musicians, but in his recording debut he resisted the temptation to use well – known samples and sentences. His cuts are specially selected sounds that fit perfectly into the melancholic music of Maed.
As a bonus, the listener will get a track called „Atak Robotów” („Aliens Attack”). Maed recorded it with Meva and Lapsky (Polish DJ champion) for a Ukrainian – Polish compilation called “It’s not boring – It’s ambient”.
In „Figures” the listener finds a modest, decently made scratch – music suite. It is not devoid of a jazz feeling, one that is pumping some fresh air into the ever-present, overhyped laptop beats. It is an EP on a juncture, one between electronic music and jazz, turntables and beat machines. Fans of Ricci Rucker or Onra will feel at home.

To celebrate the 5th birthday of Good Netlabels, a site devoted to the promotion of noteworthy endevours within the underground scene, we have decided to release a new album in the GNs Compilation series. It is the third project in the series, but for the first time ever the contributions have been selected in the course of a contest. Over the last three months we have collected entries that would then undergo a careful selection. In order to make the process as fair and unbiased as possible, music journalists, visual artists as well as musicians have been asked to make the selection.

This newest part of the GNs Compilation series, entitled Empty Shadows, is an international project that marks a shift in the approach to and the preparation of the compilation. While Jazzy Puzzle and Break Asymmetry were collections of recordings created specifically for these compilations by artists invited to these projects, this time it is Good Netlabels readers that contributed to the compilation, by the same token showcasing the underground scene.
Once again the author of the cover is Justyna Bielecka. All translations have been done by Ola Górska, and the sound and mastering have been done by Cuefx.
