sculpture show: the first

so that last post? the one about going coastal and heading to charleston, sc. that one where i said check back to hear about how the actual purpose of that visit went. well, this is that post. finally.
artist

matt took part in his first sculpture show in summerville, sc. it is an annual show called sculpture in the south that i am sure we will continue to attend each year. my saying regarding the show (because i am a huge dork) is that it wasn't a total bust.
matt had no sales, which was the case for most of the artists. he did however make some great contacts, got his name out there, had lots of interest in his work, and got to meet a lot of talented artists who share his passion for sculpture. it was a good test run for the big show out in loveland, co. this summer, and we got to meet a few artists that will also be attending that show too.

of course, it rained most of the weekend so matt had to set up and take down his booth while getting soaked and muddy. i was there for the set up part, but i had the little ones with me so i really only got wet when henry was having to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes. other than that we sat in the van watching a movie for the majority of it. it was a long afternoon and we all had stinky sandals by the end of the day.

as soon as the set up was done we raced back to the hotel to get ready for the black tie optional event. my mom had come up that day from georgia (yes. really!) because she was going to watch the little ones while we went to this affair. she stayed for the weekend and i would not have made it through the weekend without her. mom, thank you thank you thank you!
and off we went to the part-ay. it was swanky and it was intended for patrons to meet the artists, but we ended up talking only to other artists. i spilled wine on my dress. a given. and i still have not taken it to the cleaners. another given.

winter
the next day was the first day of the show and it was steamy and overcast. matt had a lot of interest shown in his work and some people kept coming back to his booth repeatedly throughout the day. but no one bought : (
the second day was much of the same. he did get to meet one of the founding patrons of the show and was introduced to some gallery buyers, so fingers crossed - his name at least gets around.
the minis
all in all, it was a successful weekend even though no dollars were made. matt met artists from oregon all the way to maryland, he got the invaluable experience of talking to interested buyers and getting a feel for what people thought of his work, and he had a good time. so did i, but i may have to take my mom up on her offer to watch the kids here and let matt and i go alone next year!

it also made me get a website going for matt since i had a website printed on his business cards even though no site yet existed. well, now one does, though it is still in progress. i just had to get something up before the show. take a peek.

the talented mr. matt

this is matt's newest creation. she's beautiful. she's one of my favorites (i think i say this after every new sculpture though). but she is. there is so much about her that i like. she actually has a partner too, but he is not finished yet.

my problem is trying to be the photographer of his sculptures. if i could master this it would be so beneficial (i.e., economical/convenient). i've been working on his website for ages now, and along with some other issues (ahem, matt), i'm finding that the pictures are just not up to par. for me. the background is so important, as well as the lighting. we need a permanent or semi-permanent set up for doing this. unfortunately, our garage is the only space available and well, i'll just say there won't be any pictures of the dungeon on this blog. so for now, we make feeble attempts outdoors. i can easily burn through 200+ photos and come out with only a handful i find worthy, and even then they don't seem quite right.

thank goodness his talent speaks for itself and shines through on its own.

she's grumpy

yesterday was a rough day. i slept all of about 3 hours. a middle of the night potty trip did me in. it's like clockwork. every morning at 3:00 am. this time i just couldn't really fall back asleep. so my day started out on a sour note. to make matters worse i realized at about 9:30 in the morning that after being a complete grump to matt before he left for work that i had also forgotten to tell him happy birthday (at least i told him i loved him). then i called him in tears apologizing for being such a horrible, grumpy wife. i'm so fortunate to have such an understanding husband.

the rest of the day i spent waddling around like a zombie trying to complete everyday and not so everyday tasks. a trip to the store for forgotten ingredients to make the birthday cake (red velvet - is that a guy thing?). then home to make lunch and put a boy down for his nap. then fighting back tears (mainly from exhaustion) and for realizing i still forgot one necessary ingredient and will now have to make another dreaded trip to the store after the boy's nap which means the cake making cannot commence until matt returns from work.

in the meantime, i made a new recipe from this book. homemade coleslaw. i am picky when it comes to coleslaw. as a matter fact i rarely like it. this recipe i liked and was pleased that it actually came out well. the only thing i wasn't so fond of was hand squeezing the liquid out of the cabbage. it was a little time consuming. i'm sure there is any easier way to do it, but in my frame of mind yesterday i just went with it.

i made it through the day and matt made it through his birthday and the nearly unbearable wife. it probably didn't help that i reminded him that he's six candles shy of forty. (see, i was grumpy).

so, for today i plan on the boy and i not taking a trip anywhere, watching a movie, and knitting as much as possible.
then tonight matt & i are gearing up for our first ever garage sale. stop on by this saturday for some good deals. we are
cleaning house!

this is the man whose patience i admire.
this is the man that makes the best meals.
this is the man who shows so much love.
this is the man that is the best dada.
this is the man that makes the best companion.
this is the man for me.

photo friday.4 (with guest photographer)

This is the first photo friday with a guest photographer - Henry. He snapped these shots while we were visiting in Illinois and the one of Matt turned out to be one of my favorite pictures from the trip. He took several good pictures actually, so I can't just pick one. My camera is kind of heavy for him, so I love how everyone has to bend over to fit in the frame.
That is Matt's brother Rick in the bottom photo. We hadn't seen him since last year because he's been in Afghanistan. We're so glad he's home safe.

The Wife of an Artist

Today has been pretty hectic, so this will be short and slightly incoherent. Matt is submitting a sculpture (Man Cub) to the RiverSculpture Festival in Asheville. It's still a work in progress (life-size) and will be cast in bronze when it is finished. Since we are last minute kind of people (deadline is Saturday), I have been scurrying to get all the materials needed to submit this to send overnight. Its a great venue for his work to be seen. The show is outside on the grounds of the French Broad River Park. My grandparents live in Asheville and sent us the newspaper clipping about the Festival seeking artist submissions (Thank you!). It would be so cool to have one of his pieces shown there for my Grands to show off! Anyway, that's what I'm up to today, besides laundry, grocery getting, dishes and the norm. Keep your fingers crossed for us! I'll keep you posted.

Proud Wife

This past Friday, Matt and I attended the first annual Georgia Artists exhibit at the Abernathy Arts Center. Matt submitted three sculptures to the arts committee and they chose one to show at this exhibit. We had a good time and got to see some great works by several artists. The most amusing moment for me was when we were standing near Matt's sculpture soon after we arrived and we overheard this:

Wife to husband (sour look on her face), "Matt Lewis? Never heard of him. Have you?"
Husband responds by shrugging and then shaking head no. They keep moving on.

We pretty much looked at each other and just started laughing. I suggested starting a whisper campaign a la Kermit the Frog. I'm embarrassed to repeat what Matt suggested I say, but it was quite funny and it made my tea almost come out my nose.

After we made the rounds, we went outside for a bit. There we were treated to a stunning show by a red-shouldered hawk.
It was a beauty. We even go to see it catch its dinner, or rather appetizer, because I don't think it was finished. We decided we should let it feast in peace and returned indoors for the awards ceremony.

When we returned we got the highlight of the evening which was seeing the red dot on the name card next to Matt's sculpture.
It sold! One of two pieces that sold opening night. Pretty exciting. I even teared up a bit (maybe a lot). I am so proud of him. I know it can be difficult to put your work into the world and have it be judged, so for his sculpture to sell was so thrilling. He works so hard and is truly gifted. I am so glad he got this small ego boost that all artists need on occasion.

And, just one more photo from the night. One of my favorites. These two were sitting here talking (a bit loudly) during the entire awards ceremony. I found it entirely amusing as well as their conversation, at least the bits I heard. They reminded me of Statler and Waldorf.

Oh yes, and if you would like to see more of Matt's work please visit here. It's just a small sampling, website is in (slow) progress.
