Aida

In Marvel's Agents of Shield, Aida was an Artifical Intelligent Digital Assistant aka A.I.D.A. that was created by Holden Radcliffe. Her appearance was based upon the woman he loved, Agnes, who had a terminal illness. Aida's programming became corrupted by the Darkhold. She used the Framework created by Radcliffe to create a human body for herself with multiple inhuman powers.

In Computer Science, AIDA stands for Abstract Interfaces for Data Analysis.

In Space exploration, AIDA stands for Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment. It is a space probe that would crash into an asteroid to study it.

Aida is an Arabic name that means, 'returning or visitor'.

Irisa

In the television show and video game, Defiance, Irisa was an Irathient, one of the alien Votan races that settled on Earth in the future. She was adopted as a child by Joshua Nolan. She was implanted with a Kelovan or key, which would allow her to mentally control the Kaziri, a Votan ship. She became Nolan's deputy lawkeeper in the town of Defiance.

IRISA is the acronym for the Research Institute of Computer Science and Random Systems in Rennes, France. The acronym is derived from it's French name, "Institut de recherche en informatique et systèmes aléatoires".

Irisa is a variant of Iris, a Greek name that means 'rainbow'. In English, it is a type of flower. In 2014, 8 girls were named Irisa in the U.S.

Quill

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Jason Quill, aka Starlord, was abducted from Earth as a child. He became an outlaw, but later redeemed himself by stopping Ronan the Accuser from destroying Xandar with an infinity stone. In the process, he joined a group of misfits called the Guardians of the Galaxy. In the Marvel comics, Peter was an orphan who became an astronaut. He was given the title Starlord by an alien called the Master of the Sun.   

In X-Men, Quill was a mutant that attended Xavier Institute. He had porcupine quills on his head instead of hair, and he could fire them as projectiles. He was mentored by Gambit and wanted to become a thief. He was killed when William Stryker attacked the school.

In Doctor Who, Mr. Quill was a minor character who was an engineer at a off shore gas rig.

In the Transformers franchise, the Quill was an artifact that had the ability to change the future itself.

Quill was an experimental satellite program in the 1960s to test radar imaging from space.

The Quill was a 1983 computer program that one could use to write computer games. QUILL is also short for Quintiq Logic Language, a Dutch programming language.

Quill is an English word that refers to the hollow shaft of a feather, or a pen made from one. In 2014, 5 boys were given the name Quill.

Turing

Alan Turing was a British mathematician, computer scientist, and cryptologist, among other things. He is best known for helping to crack the Enigma machine used by the Germans to encrypt transmissions during World War II. Turing is considered the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. He was a homosexual, which was still considered a crime during his lifetime. He was convicted of the crime and underwent estrogen injections instead of going to jail so that he could continue his work. Unable to cope with the treatment, he committed suicide by cyanide poisoning.

Turing is a surname of Scottish origin, first appearing in the 14th century as the name Turin. I think this name would be best in the middle spot, as an homage to Alan Turing's life. The name does not appear as a first name in the Social Security Administration's name database.

Janus

In Stargate, Janus was an ancient scientist. He lived in Atlantis, and was one of the Lantean survivors who escaped to Earth. Janus used unorthodox methods, and his controversial experiments and inventions were often done in defiance of the Lantean Council.
In I Am Number Four, Janus was a pilot and member of the Lorien Defence Council. He piloted the ship that brought the chosen Garde to Earth.

In Men In Black, Janus was an INS agent that was neuralized by Kay and Dee.

In Warehouse 13, the Janus Coin was used to separate a person's consiousness from their physical form.

The feminist science fiction 'fanzine', Janus, was published from 1975 to 1980.

Saturn has a moon named Janus.

There are two programming languages that bear the nameJanus. Microsoft used the name as a codename for Windows 3.1x, and as a codename for a portable version of Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM). There is a speech recognition program named Janus.

The name Janus comes from a two-faced Roman God. He looked to the future and the past, and was the god of beginnings and endings. The name for the month of January is derived from Janus. I love this name, but I think the name is problematic for boys because it sounds too similar to the girl's name Janice. It would work well for a pet though. It has never ranked in the top 1,000 names in the U.S., and does not appear in the database for 2014.

Ara

Ara is a constellation in the southern sky. The constellation name comes from the Latin for 'altar'. It was first described by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. There are 8 main stars in the constellation. The Stingray Nebula is in Ara.

In Stargate Atlantis, Ara was a member of the Satedan military who was captured by the wraith, and eventually became a wraith worshiper. She was killed by Rakai, one of her fellow wraith worshipers.  In Stargate SG-1, Ara was the name of a platform in the shape of the Ori symbol for Origin, upon which heretics were burned.

In Dragonlance, Ara Kano was a leader of the town Pirim.

Ara Tribe is a tribe in the StarCraft Universe.

Project Ara is a Google initiative to create modular smartphones.
Ara is a genus of macaws.

Although the constellation name is derived from Latin, Ara is also a female Persian name that means 'brings rain', and a male Armenian name from a legendary King, Ara the Beautiful. Ara is sometimes used as a nickname for the Russian name Avrora. It can also be used as a nickname for Arabella.

Ara appears in the SSA's top 1000 girl names from 1900-1918. It's highest rank was in 1901 when it reached #559. It has never reached the top 1000 for boys. It was given to just 49 girls and 7 boys in 2014. Although it's unisex, I think Ara works best for girls due to it's similarity to Ada and Ava. It would be a good choice for parents who like those names but want something a little different.

Atom

An atom is a unit of matter that consists of a nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by a cloud of electrons.

Atom is a boxing robot in the movie Real Steel. Charlie Kenton and his son Max found Atom in a junkyard when they were salvaging parts for another robot. Max fell off a precipice, and was snagged on Atom's arm that was jutting out of the side of the cliff, saving his life. Max insisted on digging up Atom and bringing him home. Atom was a simple sparring robot, but with some creative maneuvers from Max and Charlie, he went on a winning streak. In their big showdown with Zeus, the voice controller was damaged. They used Atom's shadowboxing feature so that Charlie, an ex-boxer himself, could control him from the sidelines.

Captain Atom is a comic book hero that has been featured in his own series, but has also been part of the Justice League. Captain Atom was a scientist who was 'atomized' in an accident, which made him atomic powered.

A.T.O.M. or Alpha Teens On Machines, is an animated television series from France. It centers around a group of teenagers who use high tech gadgets and weapons to fight a criminal mastermind.

Arthur Thomson was a science fiction artist that used the name Atom.

Atom is a programming language. It is a domain-specific language (DSL) in Haskell, for designing real-time embedded software. Intel Atom is a name of an Intel CPU (Microprocessor).

I think Atom can work as a name because it sounds similar to 'Adam', and could also be used as a variant of 'Tom'. In 2012, 52 boys in the United States were named Atom.  

Hawking

Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist and cosmologist. Hawking suffers from ALS, which caused him to lose his voice. He communicates via a computer that generates speech.

Hawking radiation is a type of radiation theoretically emitted by black holes. It was named after Stephen Hawking, who first theorized it's existance.

There is a main belt asteroid named 7672 Hawking, in honor of Stephen Hawking.

Robert Hawking was a student at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban video game.

In Star Trek, two different shuttlecraft were named Hawking after Stephen Hawking.

Hawking Technology is a company that manufactures Wi-fi hardware.

Hawking fits in well with the current surname trend, and can be shortened to the very cool nickname, "Hawk". It doesn't appear in the Social Security Administration's name database, but the name Hawk was given to 33 boys in 2012. For parents in love with the sound of Hawk... why not add a few letters for a more brainy formal name?

Vala

Vala Mal Doran of Stargate SG-1 was once the host of a Goa'uld symbiote named Qetesh. After being freed by the Tok'ra, she became a planet hopping con artist. She attempted to steal Earth's first starship, Prometheus, but was thwarted by Daniel Jackson. She later sought out Daniel's help and through a piece of Goa'uld technology, became linked to him. Since they could not be apart without either of them dying, Vala stayed at Stargate Command, and eventually reformed enough to become a member of SG-1 herself. She was mother of the Orici, Adria, and in an alternate timeline, became lovers with Daniel Jackson. 

The Valar of Middle Earth are a race of angelic beings. Vala is the singluar form of the name. They are mentioned in The Lord of the Rings, but are mostly dealt with in the second part of The Silmarillion. They are the Powers of Arda (the world). They shaped the world and created beauty to counter the darkness of Melkor, aka Morgoth, from whom all evil in Middle Earth comes.

Vala is also the anglicized name of Völva, a shamanic seeress in Norse mythology. An asteroid, 131 Vala, was named for Völva.

There is a programming language called Vala. 

Vala is also a real name of Germanic origin. It means 'singled out'. According to the Social Security Administration, 13 girls were given the name Vala in 2011.
