Even if the paintiffs win, what will be the consequences? The socail media platforms that cooperated with the government aren't being sues here are they? If the government loses and face fines, that you, me and Joe Taxpayer footing the bill. Unless the people doing this shit face pain nothing will change. Pain is career, finance, retirement consequences. Nothing else will have the slightest impact. Oh, they will get new policies forbidding this in the future. They already have a policy forbidding it. The first Amendment which they ignore like they do the second, fourth, sixth, and tenth at will. Without consequences, this is a waste of time. If I'm wrong, tell me I'm wrong. Just saying...

Here's a diagnostic you can run on yourself. If you think a speaker is "provoking violence" by speaking, then you utterly fail to understand the difference between speech and violence. Violence can often justifiably provoke violence -- assault someone and he has the right to defend himself; assault him with deadly force and he has the right to end your life. But speech cannot justifiably provoke even a slap in the face. This is the law. But more than that, it is a founding principle of this nation.

The wonderful thing about speech, even of the vilest sort, is that it leaves everyone free to engage in more speech. Violence, on the other hand, leaves only the winners free to engage in more violence. And as a recent pair of would be jihadis learned the hard way, that violence thing doesn't always work out quite like you're expecting it to.

First Amendment Free Zones

That would be the California Public Schools.

In California, a high school girl is ordered to remove an NRA t-shirt because it promotes "gun violence". The more likely reason is that it didn't jib with the administration's politics. The girl was simply wearing a gift from her dad, but the message on the shirt is still protected speech. Hire a lawyer. Sue.

[UPDATE: 10/4/2013] The School apologized. Something about a lawsuit by the NRA might have had something to do with it.

I'll be interested to see how this works out.
