I'll need a few weeks to knock together the nuts and bolts of this thing, but here is a list of some basic design goals, in no particular order:
Utilize the latest version of GS as seen in Blasters & Bulkheads and the upcoming Department
The more I work on this the further away I am getting from this goal. Nothing for it, just the way I work as a designer. --SRP
- Adapt the rules to faithfully cover the Dungeon Fantasy genre (i.e., level-based advancement, monsters, treasures, etc.)
- Expand the role-play aspects of the system to better cover non-combat encounters, but do so in such a way as to not infringe on players who just want to kill stuff in the dungeon
- Include mechanics for building your favorite races and classes into the game, because we won't be able to fit them all in
Those are some lofty goals, and they'll likely mature as the project moves along. My good buddy Joe Dragovich will be handling the layout and visual design chores. He did Labors of the Gods and Blasters & Bulkheads. Super artist Thomas Scioli is along for the ride to provide character designs and artwork. If I can twist his arm, I'll also have my pal Schuyler Hernstrom along for some lavish prose on the chapter intro pieces.
And I hope to involve some of you folks in the play-testing. You know who you are, the usual suspects! The folks who've helped keep me going in this hobby the last 10 years.
Now for some gory details. I've always wanted to do a cloth-bound, hardcover book with a sewn binding. Maybe smallish, 6" x 9". Call it a fetish of mine. I dig those sorts of books. In order to do this, and really, in order to fund any kind of real print run on this book, I would need to go the Kickstarter route. Is this something folks would be amenable to? It may not be practical, but I am considering it. We'll of course also be doing an ultra-affordable, printer friendly PDF version no matter what way I decide to go with the print. It will be B&W no matter what we decide to do, I think.
This is just me doing some fishing right now. If we go this route, Joe and I will put together a proper Kickstarter pitch and the first place I announce it will be here.
So, yeah, Goalsystem Dungeon Delve! Tell your friends, hide the Kobold women and children (Chaotic Neutral, indeed!), and sharpen your swords! There will soon be quests to undertake and evil villains to slay!
Thanks for visiting!

I will gladly Kickstarter in for this project, but I have to admit I prefer PDF to hardcover these days.
ReplyDeleteWe are in as usual Scott, if you want us. I have a 80 15mm dungeon tiles just waiting for it. I am sure Jaye will have his initial thoughts as well. Let us know.
ReplyDeleteI would really want the pdf version. But a small run vanity version could be great for those who want something more.
I am in for kickstarter and hardcover. Pdfs are hard to sell at cons and a store. Go big or go home!!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to these rules been a big fan of the dungeon delve. if you need any playtesters i have a nice collection of dwarven forge just waiting to be used again. thanks phillip
ReplyDeleteAnybody have thoughts on the Range Band chart versus using individual ranges for weapons? GDD is not really going to be a range heavy game, but their will bows, thrown weapons, and spells, so it will remain a factor.
ReplyDeleteI am kind of ambivalent on the range bands in play. They're clean, but...
Not sure.

Ranges change so much in a dungeon environment. Low ceilings, cramped quarters, tons of obstructions, lighting.
ReplyDeletethe shot is harder to make, and you can't ususally get as much power/range on a shot, except close in.
So what about an effective range for the weapons, then subtract or add a dice if its longer or adjacent? Too simple.
We ususally make sticks and paint them and don't use rulers if we can.
Yeah, I'll basically just port the simpler range rules back in from Carpathia. Already done it. Now on to figuring out how best to incorporate spells...
DeleteSpells: Go back to where it all begain - Superfigs. I'd say most of the spells found in the original AD&D could be recreated in Superfigs from the large catalog of powers found there. It would be sorta cool to have players build their own spells and/or spell book from set of powers and power mods. I've never really like the omnipower or elemental control pools, but they could work here.
